Your Riding Comeback - Creating Something You Love!

Your Riding Comeback - Creating Something You Love!
In order to make your riding comeback a lasting one, you will have to begin spending more time in the saddle than you have been recently. It makes sense, right?!  And yet, while clocking up those minutes and hours in the saddle each week can initially 'seem' to be a win... They are likely working against you and your horse in the long run.
This is because when we ride for the sake of just riding (clock-in riding), we tend to become a little too 'lax' about some of the things. The basic things that lay the foundation for everything else.
And when you begin to allow the small things to slide, chances are the bigger things will follow suit pretty quickly. This usually holds true for you, the rider, and your horse, especially in your training and development.
So, instead of just riding for the sake of riding, I'm challenging you to begin getting a little more strategic and intentional with each of your training sessions with your horse. Yes, not just 'rides', but training sessions.

How to Make Horse Riding a Priority Again in Your Life

How to Make Horse Riding a Priority Again in Your Life

If horse riding has fallen down the priorities ladder in your life, you may - like many riders - want to push it back up the list.  You know, get it back up somewhere near the top so that you can really feel like it is truly something that defines 'you' again...

Unfortunately, making horse riding a priority again can be one of those 'easier said than done' things for many lapsed riders. Especially when you consider what your 'mind' is telling you!

And, let's face it, if it is not a real priority, it won't last.  Sure, you might have enough willpower to push through for a week or two, maybe even a month or two.  But when the rubber hits the road and resistance begins to show up, you will continue to uphold the true priorities in your life.  And everything else will, eventually, fall by the wayside. Which is why it's important to take the time and do this right.

What is Stopping You From Riding More? Part 2

What is Stopping You From Riding More? Part 2
So many riders 'say' they want to ride more.  But making it happen is an entirely different matter altogether.  Identifying why you are not riding more is key to overcoming this.  And by 'identifying' I mean going deeper than those initial reasons or excuses that simply scratch the surface.

This is Part 2 of exploring this topic for you and your riding. If you have not already, make sure you go back HERE and listen to Part 1, which is focused more on external factors.  In today's episode, we will dive into more specific internal factors that may be causing you to complain that you're just not riding anymore...

     1. Wrong Horse & Rider Combination

This can be a tough one to admit to.  And then, once you have admitted it, taking action can feel mentally and emotionally uncomfortable for many riders. I think we often become conditioned to believe that if we create a partnership with a specific horse, that partnership must last forever.  We have all come across the term 'forever horse'.

However, if we think about relationships, partnerships, and friendships that we have with other people in our lives, we will see that only the rare few will truly last a lifetime. The majority will work for a period of time until either one of the people or the circumstance changes.  And we are, for the most part, okay with that happening.
Often intentionally allowing a particular relationship to change and breakdown is a good thing as it creates space for someone new and more aligned with present-day you to enter the picture.
If you have become aware of a lack of alignment between yourself and your horse, and it's begun to prevent you from getting into the saddle and riding, maybe it's time to reassess the partnership.

This does not have to always mean 'selling' your horse. However, by acknowledging this and then actively looking for more suitable partners for both of you, things can begin to move forward for both of you again. Both in the training and simply riding as well.

What is Stopping You From Riding More? Part 1
Now, if you answer this with 'because we're up to our eyeballs in snow'... Okay, fair enough! However, if you answer this with 'I don't know' or an answer that you, yourself, can quickly tear apart...  This is for you!
So many riders 'say' that they want to ride more.  But the difference between the saying and the doing can be a big one.  Which, when you think about how much enjoyment and connection we get from being with our horses, is a terrible pity.
In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, we'll delve into five of the more common obstacles that can prevent more time in the saddle, and chat about how you can overcome them.  Whether it's time management, inadequate facilities, or the pressure to please others, identifying the specific challenge you are facing is the first step toward a schedule that includes more riding time.

Becoming Curious to Reigniting Passion and Progress in Your Riding

Becoming Curious to Reigniting Passion and Progress in Your Riding
What happens when the initial novelty of riding your horse begins to wear off? Like it or not, this will happen at some point.  And when it does, one of the best ways to find a 'spark' again, is to become curious.  For many riders, the initially satisfying 'comfort zone' ends up becoming the very thing that sets them off down a path of 'same old, same old' in their riding. What was once the highlight of each day or week, becomes a mundane task or chore that needs to be crossed off a list.

I've spoken before about how I've noticed that for most riders when they are starting out, it is simply the thrill or high of being around horses and being in the saddle that keeps them coming back for more. And, very often, an enormous amount of responsibility for the 'success' of each ride will fall on the horse and their behaviour during the ride.  Which is fine... At the beginning.
However, when riders fail to begin taking more of that responsiblity for themselves, especially as the initial novelty wears off... Cracks begin to show! And horseriding tumbles lower and lower down the priority list!
This is why, the longer you have been calling yourself a 'rider', the more important it becomes to begin future pacing yourself and your goals with your horse.

Question:- How to Stop Gripping with My Knees in the Canter!

Question:- How to Stop Gripping with My Knees in the Canter!

The canter. It is often so wonderful - until it's not! And for this particular listener of the Daily Strides Podcast, the whole experience is being ruined by her knees.  Specifically gripping with her knees in the canter.  This can be a challenge for many riders, so today, I want to address it here in this episode of the podcast.

Gripping with My Knees in the Canter

This particular rider also shared that, along with gripping with her knees, she is having challenges with keeping her heels down in the canter as well.  And I think that this is pretty par for the course. In fact, I think that the heels are a symptom of the knees...

Question:- Why Can't I Maintain the Canter?

Question:- Why Can't I Maintain the Canter?

It's all well and good being able to get into the canter; but what happens if you can't maintain the canter?!  This is the challenge that one of the listeners to the Daily Strides Podcast is having with her horse. And she's not alone!  I received this same question from a few riders.

So in this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, I want to dive into what riders can do to help them stay in the canter for longer when riding their horses.

Why Can't I Maintain the Canter?

I do feel that there are a few possible reasons for this happening in your riding.  I am also answering this question knowing that the rider is not having challenges with getting into the canter.  And is also able to maintain her posture, position, and seat while riding the canter. I do feel that if either of the above two scenarios are happening, my answer will be a little different...

So, my advice for this particular rider is the following:-

Question:- My Horse is Too 'Spicy'; Help!

Question:- My Horse is Too 'Spicy'; Help!

What a great way to describe a horse!  As I read this rider's email and plea for help, I could almost picture what was going on for them when working together. In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, I answer a listener's question:- My horse is too spicy; please help! I feel that many riders may be struggling with this particular issue, so let's dive into it.

    My Horse Is Too Spicy

In this particular situation, the horse is bucking, a lot! And this is both on the lunge, and while being ridden.  The bucks are showing up in walk, trot, and canter. And, working alone with her horse, this rider is beginning to doubt her ability to really cope with this in the long run.

Getting Back in the Saddle After a Fall

Getting Back in the Saddle After a Fall

As riders, we all know that falls are part and parcel of the whole riding experience. However, getting back in the saddle after a fall can be a sticking point for many riders. This can be due to fear, a lack of understanding, or just the realization that falls can and will happen!

In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, I will lay out short actionable steps you can take to get you back in the saddle after a fall from your horse.

    Why Did You Fall?

Understanding why you fell in the first place is usually pretty important. And it can also be a moment of truth for many riders. Especially those who want to lay the blame squarely at their horse's hooves! Now, let's be honest, sometimes it can be something that the horse did that caused the fall, such as tripping or losing balance.  However, even then, there are usually ways that you can improve your chances of staying on.

Question:- Should I Train My Horse in the Wind?

Question:- Should I Train My Horse in the Wind?
This is a big question for many riders, especially at certain times of the year when the wind can play a bigger role in your riding and training.  In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast I answer the question; "Should I Train My Horse in the Wind?".

Should I Train My Horse in the Wind?

This is a great question and one that many riders ask themselves.  In this episode of The Daily Strides Podcast, I give you my take on what you can factor into your decision when determining if you should indeed work your horse in the wind; or not!

Adjusting the Length of Your Horse's Stride for Jumping

Adjusting the Length of Your Horse's Stride for Jumping
If you enjoy jumping with your horse, riding that clear round is all important. Luckily there are a few key areas you can work on in your training that will help you to begin seeing more of them.  Adjusting the length of your horse's strides is just one of those. And it's also a pretty useful exercise for all horses and riders, jumping or not.
If you can begin to intentionally help your horse to have either a shorter or a longer stride, it gives you both flexibility and adjustability in your riding
In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, I want to help you to begin to understand just how versatile this exercise is to have in your toolkit when it comes to riding your horse.

What Comes First When Training Your Horse?

What Comes First When Training Your Horse?
I remember the excitement I felt when I began working with my pony 'alone' at home in the fields when I was younger.  The feeling that anything was possible if I was only willing to put in the consistent effort and work.
And the feeling that there was just so much to do and so little time to do it!

My mind was racing with thoughts of ground pole exercises, schooling movements, jumping grids, fitness training, etc., etc., etc.  All of the 'exciting' stuff I had seen other riders get up to in the pony magazines I got as a treat a couple of times a year.
And after speaking with thousands of adult riders over the years, I think they also experience those same feelings.  Except as an adult, when training your horse alone, those feelings of initial excitement can often turn into overwhelm pretty quickly!
In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, I want to chat about the very first concept I believe all horses and riders should work on in their training.  And I want to help you begin to think of this as the absolute foundation of everything else you do with your horse. Especially if you are training your horse alone.

Are You Ready for Training Your Horse?

Are You Ready for Training Your Horse?

When it comes to being ready for training your horse, you probably fall into one of two categories.  The first one is filled with riders who genuinely believe they can do anything. And that they’ll probably be successful.  The second is the riders who really weigh up every pros and cons before making a decision.  And they often second guess themselves or lack confidence in their abilities.

This is especially true when it comes to actually working with their horse. And the fear is that they will somehow ‘ruin’ or ‘untrain’ their horse.

You Are Already Training Your Horse!

However, I think that it is important to remember that you are ALWAYS training your horse. Which really makes the question of it you’re ready for it, redundant! Each time you interact together, there is either the acceptance of the behaviour, or correction of the behaviour.  This is training. So, if we assume for a second that you are, right now, already training your horse, what can you begin doing today to help you get better results?

This is the exact reason why, in riding schools or yards working with more inexperienced riders, the horses and ponies often need to be ‘re-tuned’.  Basically, more experienced and knowledgeable riders will regularly ride that horse and make sure that the basic fundamentals of the training are still in place and present.

And this might be the very challenge, you’re experiencing now – you don’t have anyone to do the ‘re-tuning’ for you.  It’s just you and your horse – and you’re doing all of the training.

And that can seem very daunting.  But it is ‘doable’; if you are willing to follow a few simple guidelines that will help transform you from just a ‘rider’ (or a passenger), into your horse’s trainer. And I believe that your attitude to this is what really decides if you’re ready for training your horse – or not!

Smoother Transitions from Canter to Trot

Smoother Transitions from Canter to Trot

What goes up, must come down; apparently. And this certainly applies to the gaits when you’re riding your horse. For many riders, successfully riding the transition into the canter and then staying with the movement in the canter itself is a great achievement. However, the next piece of the puzzle is returning to the trot.

For many riders, no matter how good the canter is and how well they can ride it; the bumpy, uneven, and unbalanced return to trot puts a damper on the whole experience.

And, yes, the transition from canter to trot can be tough to ride; but it is definitely ‘doable’. Here’s how you can improve this for you and your horse.

Start Rolling & Stop Bouncing in the Canter

Start Rolling & Stop Bouncing in the Canter

One of the fun things about canter is the 'moment of suspension'.  Except when this 'moment' applies to the rider, not just the horse!  Yes, there is a moment when the horse will be 'off' the ground; suspended in midair.  However, we definitely don't want you to experience this bouncing in the canter.

Becoming airborne whenever your horse strides in the canter is no fun!  And the 'land' when you connect with the saddle again brings little relief.  Instead of being a safe and reassuring place to 'come back to earth'; it can feel like the saddle is trying to push you back into 'thin air' again.  Never a good feeling!

In order to truly stop bouncing in the canter, I think you first have to understand the canter. And what your body needs to do in order to stay moving with the horse, rather than against it.

Creating a More Responsive Transition into the Canter

Creating a More Responsive Transition into the Canter

Getting into the canter can be a challenge! For so many riders the transition into the canter can be a truly bumpy, hair-raising, rushed, and flat experience.  There is none of the upward, poised, clean, and intentional 1 that leads to the 2, 3 for the canter stride. It is just a matter of creating enough momentum with a flat, running trot to finally, eventually, fall into the canter. Not good!  But all is not lost...

I believe that by working on a few key elements in your riding and your training with your horse, you can literally transform your canter transition in a VERY short period of time.

The key to doing this is to first be very honest with yourself.  Honest about both your abilities and what you are doing.  And also, your horse's abilities. Is he actually  'able' to simply step from a trot into a canter, carrying you, at this level in his training?  That there is a really good question and one that's worth getting clear on today.

What’s Stopping You Getting Back in the Saddle After a Break?

What’s Stopping You Getting Back in the Saddle After a Break?
What stops riders from getting back in the saddle after a break? Returning to riding. I mean, if it was as easy as simply mounting up, everyone would do it, right? And yet, everyone doesn’t.
In fact, so many riders sit on the sidelines of their proverbial horse-riding dream, forever wishing and waiting for the day to arrive when they will mount back up again. But that day, for many, never arrives.
And for those who somehow do make it happen, the ‘return’ is often short-lived. A few initial rides. All motivation and inspiration. Rah rah excitement… Only for the whole dream to fizzle and burn out before it ever really got started.

Getting back in the saddle after a break can seem daunting. However, understanding what’s blocking you and why can often highlight the way for riders to not only get started but to keep at it as well.
