Weaning Yourself from the Arena Markers

Weaning Yourself from the Arena Markers

Arena markers are a great tool when working on improving specific things in our riding. Whether it be rhythm and stride length. Or shapes of movements and shapes...  Using strategically placed markers can really improve the overall quality of the work you do with your horse.  However, just like all of the other artificial aids, we can sometimes become a little too dependent on arena markers in our riding.

Remember, arena markers, just like all other artificial aids, are there to 'back up' or 'strengthen your natural aids.  Meaning it is essential you are looking to eventually work without them.

But working without arena markers can be very challenging for many riders!  In this snippet of a Connection Bonus Live training from December 2021, I discuss how you can begin to slowly, but effectively, remove the arena markers from your circles.  This is all without compromising the quality of the work and the training.

Once again, this is a previously recorded training.  My voice is still quite hoarse.  I really do appreciate your patience with this and I hope it serves you.

    Happy Riding

    Smoother Downward Transitions

    Smoother Downward Transitions

There is a tendency for riders to 'hold' a little too much during the downward transitions.  And while the half halt is essential to the preparation and transition itself... Too much can lead to a very 'stuck' feeling when the horse actually makes it into the new gait!  A little like 'stuck in the mud'.

In this episode, I am releasing a Connection Bonus Live Call from June 2021.  This is due to my ongoing hoarse voice!  I hope you enjoy the 'episode' and that it is useful for you in your riding.

The focus for the month inside of Connection was self-carriage through downward transitions.  In this particular call, I discuss 'releasing the handbrake', especially through the seat and hands, while riding the transition.  I do hope that you find this helpful for your downward transitions.

    I Don’t Have Enough Time to Ride…

    I Don’t Have Enough Time to Ride…

A few months ago, I really felt the burden of guilt on my soul…  And during that time, my ‘whine’ was fairly constant; “I don’t have time to ride!’ Now, it is not lost on me the fact that I created all of this guilt myself. You see, whenever I was doing one thing, I was feeling like I ‘should’ have been doing something else.

So, when I was with ‘The Boys’ (my children) I felt guilty because I ‘should‘ have been riding. And when I was at the stables and in the saddle, I felt guilty because I wasn’t ‘with‘ the children.  When I was working, I seemed to be continually thinking “I need to ride today”.  And, then when I was riding I berated myself over my lack of planning to bring a tripod, phone, and mic with me to create some videos for work.

Why is it that, as riders, we can often feel so guilty about riding – or about not riding? And why do so many of us struggle with finding ‘enough’ time to ride?

Horse Riding as a Parent – How to Make It Work

Horse Riding as a Parent – How to Make It Work

Can I tell you something funny?  Years ago, before I had children, I was one of ‘those’ people. You know the ones that say “when I have children, I will have them at the stables with me all the time because nothing will change”.  I usually followed it up with something offhand like “they will fit in with my schedule”.  Ha, ha, ha!! Oh, how naive it was back then!

If you are trying to juggle horse riding and parenting, you will know all too well that they can often clash. The time, focus, and attention that is necessary to really improve as a rider can often leave us feeling like we’re stealing time from our children!  Or that our children are stealing valuable ‘riding time’ from us!

Finding time to devote to your riding when you are a parent can truly be a challenge

However, by setting a few healthy boundaries, becoming more disciplined with your time, and a lot of luck, it can be done.

Tipping Forward while Transitioning into the Canter

Tipping Forward while Transitioning into the Canter

Have you ever fallen into the trap of trying to actually get your horse to canter? It’s a sneaky one that hides in plain sight. And it is an exhausting one as well. The good news is that you’re not alone! Over the years, I have seen so many riders make this mistake.

Because trying to make your horse canter, and asking your horse to canter are two completely different things…

And the latter, asking your horse, is so much easier, balanced, and enjoyable for all involved. It also has a much higher success rate as well ;)

Declutter Your Riding and Watch What Happens…

Declutter Your Riding and Watch What Happens…

I bet that you still remember the day you made your first ‘big’ equestrian-related purchase.  Whether that was a helmet, a saddle, a horse, or a property, it’s a special time for all riders.  And of course, all of the ‘big ones’ that come after that are equally as memorable.

The same applies to your riding.  That feeling when you ‘finally’ understood the canter and how to move with your horse – rather than bouncing against it!  Or the first clear round you and your horse worked together to achieve.

Big moments that, just like physical things, usually lead you on the path to your next ‘big thing’.

And as riders, we also tend to collect a whole lorry load of smaller things as well.  The amounts of which tend to correlate to the amount of time we’ve considered ourselves as ‘riders’.  The daily essentials that, over time, we find we have 7 or 8 of each one (hands up who has a whole cupboard of brushes in the tack room!).

Developing More Patience as a Rider

Developing More Patience as a Rider
A lack of patience is something that many riders feel shame about. I was one of those riders for many years, so I know full well how it feels. The initial frustration, the following swift judgment or potential explosion, and then the guilt that happens afterward. Let’s be honest, coming out the other side from losing your patience is rarely a good place to be!
And yet, for years I simply believed that I was not a patient person. Like it was something that you are either born with – or not
Now, I do think that some people have naturally more tolerance and more patience than others. However, I also now believe that patience can be developed – in all riders. It is simply a matter of believing you can, and then committing to doing the work required.

Building Confidence When Riding a Nervous Horse

Building Confidence When Riding a Nervous Horse
Riding a nervous horse is one thing… Feeling less than confident about your own abilities while on your horse is quite another. Imagine it, up there, on your horse. He is beginning to get a little ‘jumpy’. Let’s be honest, so are you… Doubts are beginning to creep in and your thoughts are heading in a direction you would rather that they didn’t go…
Building confidence in your abilities to both handle yourself and the horse when in this situation is often a long road. However, it can be done – with time and patience.
Here are my suggestions for building your confidence in working with and riding a nervous horse.

Using Transitions to Improve Your Posture

Using Transitions to Improve Your Posture
For many riders, posture is something that they rarely think a whole lot about. It’s a basic that you ‘set and forget’. Meaning, you figure out what it is and how it feels, and then you are diligent in putting it onto autopilot. Which then frees you up to focus on other things. And this works well; until it doesn’t…
Transitions, particularly between gaits, have this special ability to shine a spotlight on any weaknesses either horse or rider has, and riders posture is often the focus of this attention
However, transitions by their very nature can also be a really useful tool to help riders overcome any posture challenges. They require you to engage and carry yourself. And they also continually question you by requiring balance throughout the movement.
Here are a few ideas to help you make the most of using transitions to improve your posture…

How to Secure a Swinging Lower Leg

How to Secure a Swinging Lower Leg
What is it about a swinging lower leg that makes it so annoying for riders, horses, and trainers the world over?! I mean, everyone has their specific ‘riding issues’ and deals with them accordingly. And yet, a swinging lower leg has the potential to have riders stuck on a plateau forever!
I don’t need to tell you how important it is to have a secure lower leg when riding. It is vital for the safety, communication, and, maybe, mental health of all involved!
If you have been struggling with a lower leg that prefers to play ‘hokey pokey’ swinging back and forth, rather than help you gain clarity with your horse, don’t lose faith. Here are a few ways to begin securing those legs, once and for all.

Today's Riding Plan for You and Your Horse...

Today's Riding Plan for You and Your Horse...

"So, what are you planning on doing today?". It's a question I ask at least 5 or 6 times a week to different riders.  And, let's be honest here, so often the answer is not all that great! "I'm not sure.  We'll see when we start working."  If that's you right regarding your next ride with your horse, I am giving you 'the look'!  The look I reserve for riders who say they want to achieve and do all of the things... But they continue to wing it when it comes to their training and their responsibilities as the trainer for their horse.

So, rather than just moan, I am going to give you a step-by-step riding plan today that you can follow so you can truly make the most of your next ride with your horse :)

What is 'Doing It' for You and Your Horse This Year?

What is 'Doing It' for You and Your Horse This Year?
It's always the same.  The same sentences are being spoken and written about the same things. And I've been thinking about why it is this way.  Why do most riders make the same 'resolutions' year in and year out?  Rather than growing, building, and developing so that they get to create something different each year they are together?

How about this year, you try something different for you and your horse?  Something that you can feel a sense of accomplishment about?

    Commit to 'Doing It'...

Now, I get that 'doing it' is fairly vague!  It's one of those phrases that can mean anything to anyone. And this is where the magic lives.  It is as individual and unique as you and your horse are when working together. Which allows you to make it anything that you want it to be.

I am going to suggest that from today, you begin to think about what 'doing it' is for you and your horse.

Start with thinking about what 'being an equestrian' means for you.  Does it mean a deeper connection with your horse?  Perhaps it is with horses in general.  Maybe it is riding skills and training skills that really define an equestrian for you.  Or the number of hours spent with horses on a weekly basis...

Making the Most of Time with Your Horse

Making the Most of Time with Your Horse

There are certain times of the year when circumstances mean you can find yourself with either more or less time with your horse. December, August, and April are just a few that pop into my mind.  Some riders find they have more time, and other riders have significantly less! It just depends on your unique circumstances and situation.

What is key to remember is that whatever side of the time conundrum you find yourself on, making the time with your horse count is important. Especially if you hope to continue to move forward in your training together.  Can you really afford to lose a month of training - and set your momentum back to zero?

So, to help you get this all figured out and continue to grow and develop your skills as a rider, here are a few ideas on how you can make the most of your time with your horse. However much time that happens to be for you.

Safely Including Jumping in Your Horse's Training

Safely Including Jumping in Your Horse's Training

Whether you enjoy jumping or not, the fact of the matter remains... When approached correctly and consistently, jumping can significantly benefit horses and riders in a long-term training program even if there is no intention of actually 'jumping' competitively. And this is true regardless of discipline, training level, and experience.

When introduced the right way, and then strategically used jumping is a great way to add diversity to the training - and physically and mentally develop the team.

So, here are three simple ways you can get started and begin using jumping this week in your current training program with your horse. And, keep in mind, nothing has to be 'higher' or 'bigger' than 30cm (12 inches), deal? ;)

3 Mistakes when Purchasing an Online Horse Program...

There are times each year when special offers are just an inevitable part of life. Right now is one of those times; I can only imagine how, right now, your inbox is full, full, full, with all of the things!  And some of those things, online horse programs, are just so, well, darn good... Right?

    Hmmm... Maybe too good?!

I think that most of us would agree that knowing how to discern 'all of the things' when it comes to online horse programs and courses can be a bit of a fine art.  Particularly when you're not an expert on the topic of the course or program you're interested in, maybe, investing in.  And this is true for most of us.  After all, we are not going to spend time and money on knowledge or training on things we already are well versed in!

So, in the hope that I can help you a little with all of the decisions regarding what's 'right' for you and your horse...  Here's a quick rundown of the 3 common mistakes I see riders make.
