    About this Episode

Estelle talks about being a Female, Glam Geek in the music industry, embracing the modern musicians multitasking survival skill and how inequality in the music industry ruined her blossoming career

“When I got pregnant with my son, but he's 20 now so obviously it was a slightly different landscape, but I was in the studio with a major label and I had been, you know, for kind of about a year. Then was in the studio about four or five months and we're working on stuff. I had my A&R person, whatever. And literally I got pregnant, as soon as I told that it news, it was like incommunicado, literally like chocolate hot rock. Yeah. Completely, completely serious. Actually upsets me more than anything was my realisation that, you know, I was having this baby, but I knew that it would come to the complete detriment of my career. I knew that those two couldn't exist in a parallel, you know, in one world, it was very much, it was one or the other.

027 I Learned How To Get Up Better with Jenna Andrews

In this episode Jenna and I talk how she got started in her phenomenal career and how she felt being a young girl in the music industry surrounded by older men. We discuss her podcast “The Green Room” and the importance of looking after your mental health and trying to control your emotions when doing business.

“Being signed to a major label, like I definitely bit my tongue a lot when I was wanting, you know, I knew what I wanted, but I also was scared to sort of like necessarily say that cuz I thought that if I spoke up, then that would mean, oh, I might get dropped or I may not be able to, you know, all those things.

And I think obviously the, the idea of having. You know, all males, all like your a and r team and all these type of things, especially older males, when you're like a young girl, it's also intimidating to be able to necessarily voice that opinion, you know? So for me that, that was hard cause I ended up making so much music that didn't end up coming out.”

026 Nope. I checked. I’m brilliant. So f*!k You! with Ilona Brannen

In this episode Ilona talks about being driven out of a school she was working in based on a 10 minute assessment that wasn’t even accurate. She had to defend and prove herself purely because a headteacher took a disliking to her and decided to make her life hell.

“ I've never had any problems with any job before. I think I learned a fair few things, right? I learned, I think a really wonderful one is that self belief, like, you can't touch me mentally. You can't, I believe in myself.

And that self-efficacy and being like, Not listening, and that's really important because other people's opinions of you. Are irrelevant. It's your opinion of yourself and you've really got to work hard at making sure you love yourself. You believe in yourself and, And you trust yourself no matter what.

Yeah. Doesn't mean you're perfect. I'm not. But it means that I can just sit comfortable in this, in the, in the fact that I know that I did my best. Yeah. And I don't have to take on board other people's feedback. Yeah. If I want to and I want to improve in certain ways, that's up to me, but I don't have to take.

Anyone else's opinion of me. And that's a fantastic gift to know I've got inside of me. ”

025 I Reclaimed My Power with Michelle Grimes

025 I Reclaimed My Power with Michelle Grimes

In this episode Michelle talks about being reborn after having her confidence stripped,  being humiliated and losing herself all at the cost of trying to fulfil her dream career.  We discuss how even strong women can fall victim to the misogyny of the music industry and the moment she reclaimed her power!

“The misogynistic, the uncaring, revolting behaviour and words that were spoken to us for those two years, I, honest to God was broken. I was not myself. I couldn't sleep outside of panic attacks, literally spiralled into this depression.

I came home, like the most amazing thing I did was performed like 20,000 people in Trafalgar Square with the girls. And we had the best time, and we all said, like we had to call it. Everyone was like, it was getting to the point where it was ridiculous. I was such a positive, loving person all in my life, got to a stage where I couldn't even sleep, I couldn't talk, I couldn't laugh. I was just numb to the world. ”

ABOUT THE GUEST - MICHELLE GRIMES

Irish Pop singer and multi-instrumentalist Michelle Grimes arrived on the scene with a voice, panache and Pop / R’n’B sensibility that instantly set her apart from her musical peers. No stranger to the stage, Michelle has performed in Trafalgar Square to over 20,000 spectators as part of ‘Pride in London’, has sung for the King and Queen of Belgium as well as singing for The Taoiseach and the U.S Presidential party in June last year when they visited Ireland.

Hailing from Limerick, Grimes has emerged as one of the country’s most promising pop acts of recent memory. After the release of her first single ‘Going, Going, Gone’, Hotpress nominated Grimes alongside the likes of Dermot Kennedy and Denise Chaila for Irish artist of the year and one to watch. Michelle’s debut single wowed Irish radio and she went straight onto playlists across the country from Fm104, Live95, LMFM, Corks 96 and C103 as their Select Irish Artist of the Month as well as gracing the airwaves across BBC (Track of the week), 2FM, Spin and many more. Michelle smashed it at the overall International Radio Charts in Ireland landing on the Top 20 most played Artists on Irish radio alongside Ariana, Joel Corry, Dermot Kennedy, Dua Lipa and other stars. The track reached #3 in the breakers charts on Irish radio too.

024 Be Brave with Sarah Oakley and Lucy Burgess

024 Be Brave with Sarah Oakley and Lucy Burgess

In this episode Bravebirds Sarah Oakley and Lucy Burgess both talk about challenges they have faced and why in both cases they felt very much unheard. We discuss Sarah’s shock at having to become a carer for her husband and son and how she has dealt with it.  We also talk about Lucy’ insanely hard decision to take her son and leave her daughter behind and how they are now both able to speak out and be brave!

“And my situation's not different to anyone else's situation. We all have times where we need to find that courage for one reason or another because you have to find your way out. But yeah, sometimes we don't see that. It's not in public, it's in private, right. So that's why I think this podcast is so good “cause people say, ‘well, that actually happened to me’.

And it’s ‘cause I think often the other thing about hard times is you feel ashamed. You feel embarrassed. Like for me, I felt embarrassed that I wasn't coping with it. Like, I've got a background in kind of psychological coaching wellbeing, working with top companies, helping them improve their performance, right but in my personal home situation, I felt like I was failing, you know?”

023 Your Difference Is Your Strength with Solène Anglaret

023 Your Difference Is Your Strength with Solène Anglaret

In this episode Solène talks about her challenges she has overcome as a victim of bullying which led her to literally changing who she was at 8yrs old to fit in.  She talks about  making sure she didn’t get good grades so she wouldn’t stand out and why fairness is now one of her top values. We discuss our hypersensitivity and heightened emotionality that we have in common and the importance of realising that being different is a strength!

“It was very, very hard to feel heard and feel accepted because you are different at school. And being reminded of that every single day. And then you are different at home as well, and being reminded of that there, every single day.

And so it's not until later when you realise that that difference is a strength. That difference is the foundation of your unique story. 022 It's Time To Speak Up with Dorothy Carvello

022 It's Time To Speak Up with Dorothy Carvello

In this episode Dorothy talks about her book “Anything For A Hit” and the abuse she faced being the first female A&R executive as Atlantic Records. She tells me about her amazing Face The Music Now Foundation that she has set up to support women and artists that have suffered abuse in the industry and how she plans to take down the abusers that are still running this Music Industry!

“Yeah, the main purpose. And the reason why I wrote this book was because I have been unheard my whole life. And when you feel marginalised, strictly based on your gender and told that you know, you have a big mouth you don't like, you know, for just really sticking up for yourself and not wanting to take abuse.

That was the reason why I wrote the book and basically, being fired from every job in the music business for not engaging in illegal or inappropriate activity, for complaining about the way the men were treating me and other women and artists as well.”

ABOUT THE GUEST - DOROTHY CARVELLO

Dorothy Carvello began her career in 1987. She was the first female A&R executive at Atlantic Records, and one of the few in the room at RCA and Columbia. But before that, she was secretary to Ahmet Ertegun, Atlantic's infamous president, who signed acts like Aretha Franklin and Led Zeppelin, negotiated distribution deals with Mick Jagger, and added Neil Young to Crosby, Stills & Nash.

The stories she tells about the kingmakers of the music industry are outrageous, but it is her sinuous friendship with Ahmet that frames her narrative. He was notoriously abusive, sexually harassing Dorothy on a daily basis. Still, when he neared his end, sad and alone, Dorothy had no hatred toward him—only a strange kind of loyalty.

In her book Dorothy reveals how she flipped the script and showed Ertegun and every other man who tried to control her that a woman can be just as willing to do what it takes to get a hit. Featuring never-before-heard stories about artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Steven Tyler, Bon Jovi, INXS, Marc Anthony, Phil Collins, and many more, Dorothy’s book is a must-read for anyone who has ever wondered what it's really like to be a woman in a male-dominated industry.

Mine was actually bigger than theirs, but they all run social enterprises and really intellectual question about social enterprise, really intellectual question about social enterprise, “Aw, we have Karis.  Karis please tell us your lovely story about you're cute little social enterprise.”  I was really embarrassed.

018 Music Took The Pain Away with Saskhia Menendez

018 Music Took The Pain Away with Saskhia Menendez

In this episode, Saskhia talks about the struggle of being literally unheard growing up with two deaf parents. Having to adjust when her mum left home and then being put into the care system. She tells me about her decision to sacrifice her true identity for her children’s safe upbringing and how she is now living as her true self and being  an inspiration for other trans women in music!

“And I think, you know, the more people see things and the more people are educated and they see this representation that I talk about, then it changes perceptions of us as a community because we are stigmatised, we are laughed at, we are joked about, we are misunderstood and there's so many different variations now.

You have transvestites, you have transsexuals, you have all different types of non binary, and we're all different. Um, you know, I've actually had full surgery. I actually take hormones. I actually live like this full time.  Like, my passport’s changed, everything about my life is completely different type was before. So I think sometimes people don't know these things, you know, it's not their fault. They just haven't been educated in it.”

ABOUT THE GUEST - SASKHIA MENENDEZ

Saskhia has recently graduated from Tileyard Education, studying International Music Marketing which she has just graduated in with a Distinction.  She is extremely proactive with a strong passion for music creativity, music marketing, branding, artist development, community building, equality, diversity, and the wider creative industries. A self-starter that's highly resilient , and a lady that doesn't get discouraged easily, highly motivated with a great personality and positive can do attitude.
