#021: War in Ukraine - Refugees in Romania w/ Samuel Hughes

For the next few episodes of the Live the More podcast, we're going to highlight stories of the people impacted by the war in Ukraine. Specifically, we want to focus on the stories of refugees fleeing the violence in Eastern Europe.

Episode #20 tells the story of Samuel and Melissa Hughes, missionaries to Ukraine for over a decade. The Hughes family fled Kyiv in mid-February, making their way to Romania, where they are serving and ministering to refugees fleeing the war. Their story is both harrowing and hopeful. Take a listen to learn more about what families like theirs are experiencing, how you can help, and how you can pray during this crisis.

If you'd like to support Samuel's work in Romania, as he serves Ukrainians there, please visit https://ymitraining.com/hughes/.

Song in the intro/outro is "Price of Freedom," by ZakharValaha; found on Pixabay.

#019: Overcoming Burnout - No Way Out But Down

#019: Overcoming Burnout - No Way Out But Down

In this mini-series, we ask, "What is burnout, how do you avoid it," and "how do you overcome burnout?"

OK, so you're waking up the fact that you're burning out. And that nagging feeling of hopelessness is beginning to take over. What now?

In Part 2 of this series, we talk about the hard work of facing up to the realities of burnout, addressing hopelessness, and what it takes to overcome and move forward. Using the incredible true story of Jamie Hull--a former British SAS pilot who was forced to crash land his plane during a training exercise--we take a hard look at the path to  recovery.

Episode #019 of the Live the More podcast has practical tips for identifying burnout and how to heal and recover. It's not easy, but the hope that's found in community, forming new habits, and spiritual formation is worth it all.

    #018: Overcoming Burnout - A Primer

    #018: Overcoming Burnout - A Primer

In this mini-series, we ask, "What is burnout, how do you avoid it," and "how do you overcome burnout?"

The WHO uses words like "chronic stress" to define burnout and closely ties burnout to the workplace. But is it possible to also contend with spiritual burnout?

In the first part of this series, we define burnout, talk about some of the causes and effects, and face the realities of spiritual burnout. If you've ever felt like you've been burning the candle at both ends for too long or like nothing you do is ever enough--for your employer, others, or even God--this one is for you.

#017: The Transformative Journey of a Ragamuffin Pirate w/ Sverker Weissglas (Pt. 2)

#017: The Transformative Journey of a Ragamuffin Pirate w/ Sverker Weissglas (Pt. 2)

Sverker Weissglas is an adventurer, prodigal-come-home, ragamuffin pirate who leads spiritual formation retreats through his sailing ministry: Living Journey. In this two-part interview, we hear about Sverker's story of encountering God in unexpected ways and rediscovering the life of Jesus. If you've ever walked through burnout, deconstructing your faith, and wondered what's on the other side--this one's for you.

Sverker is a hero to many European Christians who have sought the life of Jesus after facing burnout or failure of some kind. I first met Sverker in 2011, when I was ready to walk away from Jesus altogether because I was so fried from years of serving in ministry. Sverker showed me how to rediscover Jesus, the gospel, and what it means to live the more of God. It was from Sverker I first learned what it meant to be loved by God as a human being, not just a human doing.

Part 2 of this live the more podcast unpacks how Sverker rediscovered hope and purpose despite an intense period of spiritual burnout. "What if God doesn't need me...my gifts, service, etc.," Sverker asks, "What if God WANTS me; what if God LOVES me?"

Please visit https://livingjourney.net/ to view the upcoming sailing trips Sverker is leading for men, men and women, and others. Sverker takes his fellow pirates on journeys through the Greek islands and other beautiful, European destinations. You will always remember and cherish a trip with this incredible man and the amazing people you'll meet, so check it out and book a trip!

#014: Why we Need the Weak w/ CEO Daniel Roby

#014: Why we Need the Weak w/ CEO Daniel Roby

In the first episode of Season Two (Episode #014) of the Live the More podcast, CEO of Austin Street Center Daniel Roby shares why we need the weak who live among us and how we can care for those facing homelessness.

Daniel Roby has been the CEO of Austin Street Center for nearly six years; he believes the most vulnerable members of our city should have access to their basic needs despite the limitation of their resources.  Austin Street Center is a homeless shelter in the heart of Dallas, TX, where several hundred people shelter every night. What makes this shelter truly unique is its holistic approach to homelessness. They boast a mental health clinic and are connected with ~150 housing units, helping their temporary residents find longer-term housing. And with a chapel onsite hosting three services a day, Austin Street Center also provides spiritual care for some of the weakest, most vulnerable people on the Dallas city streets.

Check out this week’s episode to hear more of Daniel's story, how Austin Street Center is helping transform lives in Dallas, TX, and learn more of what you can do in your city to care for the weak among us.
