    • Transforming homes into welcoming spaces for guestsSharing your home on Airbnb brings extra income and allows you to welcome travelers, learning from past experiences and inspiring new opportunities

Turning your home into an Airbnb not only brings in extra income but also allows you to share a piece of your world with others. The hosts in this episode, inspired by their travels and experiences, transformed their home into a welcoming space for guests. Frank Abagnale, a former con man turned security consultant, shares fascinating stories about his impersonations and experiences, inspiring us to embrace new opportunities and learn from the past. For those who may have felt they missed their chance at great achievements, Frank's story serves as a reminder that it's never too late to make a difference and create memorable experiences. Additionally, the importance of making guests feel welcomed and cherished, whether in a home or a business, is a valuable lesson for us all.

    • The Power of Perception: How Symbols Influence BehaviorUsing symbols like uniforms or convincing voices can manipulate people's perceptions and responses, as shown in the story of a teen who used a pilot uniform to scam people.

The use of symbols, such as a uniform or a convincing voice, can significantly influence how people perceive and respond to situations. This was evident in the story of a young man who, as a teenager, used a Pan Am pilot uniform to con people into cashing checks for him. He discovered that the uniform held a great deal of power and authority, allowing him to easily manipulate others. This principle is still used in scams today, such as call centers impersonating law enforcement agencies. The man's actions were not driven by a desire to harm others, but rather by his adolescent desire to meet girls and make money. However, his lack of fear and premeditation led him to engage in risky behavior, highlighting the power of perception and the importance of being aware of manipulative tactics.

    • Risky behaviors in adolescence fueled by lack of supervision and adult role modelsThe combination of being a young adolescent, lack of adult supervision, and observing adults in questionable business dealings can lead to risky and unconventional behaviors, including cashing forged checks, which can start as a survival mechanism but turn into a game and a way to feel important.

The combination of being a young adolescent, lack of adult supervision, and observing adults in business dealings can lead to risky and unconventional behaviors. The interviewee's experience of cashing forged checks started as a survival mechanism, but later turned into a game and a way to feel important. The uniform served as a tool to gain access and respect, and the lack of consequences or emotional connection to the victims made it easier to continue the deceit. The interviewee acknowledges that their parents' divorce and their desire to prove their worth played a role in their actions. The ease of committing such acts today due to technology and the lack of face-to-face interaction only increases the potential for such behaviors.

    • The Power of Observation in Preventing DeceptionTrust your instincts and be observant to prevent deception. Recognize things instantly, even if you can't explain why. The subconscious mind plays a role in detecting deception. Be open-minded and think outside the box to prevent being deceived.

Our hardwired biology and natural tendencies can make us vulnerable to being deceived, and being observant is a crucial skill in preventing deception. The speaker shares his personal experience of being extremely observant from a young age, which helped him in his career as a con artist and later as an FBI instructor. He emphasizes the importance of trusting your instincts and having the ability to recognize things instantly, even if you can't immediately explain why. The speaker also references Malcolm Gladwell's book "Blink" and the story of the fake Greek statue, highlighting the power of the subconscious mind in recognizing deception. In the context of the FBI Academy, the speaker teaches agents to think outside the box and not to assume everything is black and white, emphasizing the importance of being observant and open-minded in order to prevent deception.

    • Technology can be exploited if not designed securelyCompanies must prioritize security in technology design to prevent harm from potential vulnerabilities, collaborating with hackers can help create secure technology.

Technology, no matter how advanced, can always be exploited if not designed with security and potential misuse in mind. The story shared about manipulating an ATM machine illustrates this concept. Hackers think differently and can find ways to bypass even the most sophisticated systems. Ori Eisen, a technology CEO, emphasizes the importance of collaboration between developers and hackers to create secure technology. However, many companies rush to market without considering potential vulnerabilities. This can lead to easily exploitable devices, such as smart home appliances and IoT devices. It's crucial to prioritize security in technology design to prevent potential harm.

    • Manipulating Devices and Social Engineering ThreatsAs technology advances, securing devices against potential manipulation and educating individuals about social engineering are crucial for preventing scams and protecting digital assets.

With current technology, it's possible to manipulate various devices such as pacemakers and cars within a certain proximity. However, the question remains whether this capability will extend to long-distance manipulation in the future. Frank Abagnale emphasized the importance of securing these devices against potential manipulation as technology advances. Before the internet era, gathering information required extensive research and phone calls. Now, with an overwhelming amount of accessible information, social engineering remains a significant threat, even surpassing the capabilities of AI. Educating people about social engineering is crucial to prevent scams, such as the one involving the phone company and SIM cards. The weak link in security often lies with individuals, making it essential to prioritize their education and awareness. Passwords, invented decades ago, are no longer sufficient for securing sensitive information, and it's crucial to explore alternative methods for protecting digital assets.

    • The Risks of Sharing Personal InformationBe aware of the dangers of sharing personal info, ask questions, use strong security measures, and stay informed to protect yourself online.

Our personal information is more vulnerable than ever before, and we need to be more aware of how it's being collected and used. The example of being able to access a bank account through a call center using just a phone number highlights the potential risks of not having adequate security measures in place. However, many people are unaware of these dangers and continue to share their personal information freely, often without realizing the potential consequences. The anecdote about a store employee asking for a Social Security number to look up a customer record is a common occurrence and highlights the lax attitude towards data security in various industries. It's important to be vigilant and ask questions when sharing personal information, as it may be used in ways that we don't intend or even realize. The increasing sophistication of cybercriminals means that they can operate from anywhere in the world, making it harder to track them down and hold them accountable. Additionally, the lack of face-to-face interaction online can lead to a lack of empathy and a greater willingness to engage in harmful or abusive behavior. In summary, it's crucial to be aware of the risks associated with sharing personal information and to take steps to protect ourselves online. This includes being cautious about what information we share and with whom, using strong passwords and security measures, and staying informed about the latest cybersecurity threats and trends.

    • Using observation skills to blend inEffective observation and social skills help gather info and blend in situations. Listen more, observe reactions, and learn from instincts.

Effective observation and social skills are crucial for blending in and gathering information. The speaker shared an experience of posing as a pilot by interviewing real pilots and learning to read their reactions to test his cover. He emphasized the importance of listening more than speaking and observing people's facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language to determine when they are testing him. The speaker also noted that these skills were not formally taught but developed instinctively. Today, with the abundance of information online, it's easier to learn various skills, but it also poses a risk of being overlooked in situations where attention to detail and observation skills are essential.

    • Creating Convincing Fake IDs with Modern TechnologyTechnology has advanced, making it easy to create convincing fake IDs, licenses, and plaques with readily available tools.

Technology has advanced significantly since the days of making fake IDs using Photoshop and printers. In the past, creating a convincing fake ID required access to specific tools and resources that were not widely available. However, today, the technology exists to make fake IDs, licenses, and even plaques look incredibly real with just a few clicks. The story of Frank Abagnale's experiences creating fake IDs in the mid-nineties highlights the naivety of people regarding the capabilities of technology. Frank was able to create convincing fake IDs simply by supplying the necessary information and having them made into a plaque, which he then used to obtain the real ID. The ease of creating fake IDs today is even more concerning, as the technology required is readily available and easily accessible. It is important to be aware of the potential for fraud and take steps to verify the authenticity of documents and IDs.

    • The Consequences of DeceptionDeception, no matter how small, can lead to profound emotional consequences. Honesty and authenticity are crucial for building strong relationships and living a fulfilling life.

Deception, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, can have profound and far-reaching consequences. The man in the discussion shared his experience of living a life on the run after deceiving people, leading to a lonely and exhausting existence. He learned that people deeply dislike being deceived, even if no physical harm was done. The emotional consequences of his actions were significant, particularly when he was found out by someone he cared about and had planned to marry. This experience taught him that trust is a valuable commodity that should not be taken lightly. It also showed him that people's reactions to deception can be unpredictable and potentially harmful. Overall, the man's story serves as a reminder that honesty and authenticity are essential for building strong relationships and living a fulfilling life.

    • Feeling Invisible Leads to DeceitFeeling invisible or undervalued can lead to deceitful behavior, but the consequences can be severe and unpredictable. Consider the potential repercussions before making decisions that could harm yourself or others.

People, especially when young, may feel invisible or undervalued, leading them to seek validation through impersonation or deceit. However, the consequences of such actions can be severe, and the risk of getting caught increases with time. The speaker in this conversation shares his experience of impersonating a doctor, and how his conscience and the eventual discovery of his deception led him to stop. He also emphasizes that had he been older or more cautious, he would have avoided such behavior altogether. Ultimately, the consequences of our actions can be unpredictable, and it's essential to consider the potential repercussions before making decisions that could harm ourselves or others.

    • The power of confidence and seizing opportunitiesBelieving in oneself and taking risks can lead to extraordinary experiences, even if it involves deception. People are often more focused on the presenter than the authenticity of documents or checks.

Confidence and seizing opportunities can lead to extraordinary experiences, even if they involve deception. The speaker, a former imposter who posed as a pilot, doctor, and lawyer, shared how his willingness to take risks and believe in himself helped him land these prestigious roles. He emphasized that people are often more focused on the person presenting themselves than the authenticity of the documents or checks. For instance, he created convincing fake checks by adding a Pan Am decal and typing the bank's name on them, but it was his pilot uniform that truly convinced the tellers. Additionally, he used Dale Carnegie's advice of being interested in others to keep their attention on him while cashing his fake checks. Overall, the speaker's story highlights the power of confidence, adaptability, and human nature in achieving seemingly impossible feats.

    • Exploiting Banking System's Lack of UnderstandingCreativity and knowledge can help manipulate systems for financial gain, even in mundane situations

The speaker used his knowledge and curiosity to exploit the banking system's lack of understanding of MICR numbers and float time to create a significant financial advantage for himself. He would forge checks and manipulate the routing system to buy himself extra time before the checks were identified as fraudulent. The speaker also shared how he would use blank deposit slips from the bank and encode his account number on them, allowing him to receive deposits made by others into his account. These actions were not part of a preconceived plan but rather a series of discoveries and opportunities he seized as he went along. The key takeaway is that with a bit of creativity and knowledge, one can find ways to manipulate systems to their advantage, even in seemingly mundane situations.

    • Lessons from a Master Con ArtistAbagnale's story highlights the importance of adaptability, quick thinking, and observation skills in both con artistry and security work. Adaptability and quick thinking allowed him to evade authorities, while observation skills are essential for gathering information in investigations.

Key takeaway from Frank Abagnale's story is the importance of adaptability and quick thinking in executing a successful con. Abagnale's ability to impersonate various professions and ad lib situations on the spot allowed him to evade authorities and carry out his schemes. However, his youth and confidence often put him in dangerous situations, such as when he had to retrieve a check with his real name on the back by impersonating an FBI agent. This incident highlights the risks involved in con artistry and the need for a cool head and quick thinking to avoid detection. Another key takeaway is the value of observation skills in security work. Abagnale emphasized the importance of teaching observation skills to agents, encouraging them to look beyond the surface and consider the possibility of deception. He also emphasized the importance of staying within the legal limits while gathering information for cases. With the evolution of crime and technology, these skills remain crucial in modern investigations.

    • Understanding Criminal ThinkingStay ahead of criminals by recognizing consistent criminal tactics, being aware of red flags for scams involving money or sensitive information, and educating ourselves about scams targeting the elderly.

While technology may change, criminal psychology remains consistent. Criminals use new methods to carry out the same scams they have for decades. To stay ahead, it's essential to understand criminal thinking. This means constantly asking yourself how a criminal would approach a situation, whether it's a field investigation or dealing with technology companies. The heightened emotional state of a victim, often referred to as being "under the ether," is crucial for successful cons. Scams often involve requests for money or sensitive information. Being aware of these red flags can help protect against being scammed. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in crimes targeting the elderly, and education about these scams is crucial. Regardless of the sophistication or simplicity of a scam, these two red flags always apply.

    • Be cautious with suspicious interactions from other countriesVerify authenticity of calls, messages, or emails from unknown sources, report scams to authorities, and approach new interactions with skepticism.

In today's world, it's essential to be cautious and smart, especially when dealing with individuals or situations that seem too good to be true, particularly those originating from other countries. Scams, such as romance or grandparent scams, are prevalent and can be very convincing. Scammers often use personal information obtained from social media to make their stories more believable. Therefore, it's crucial to verify the authenticity of any suspicious calls, messages, or emails before taking any action. Additionally, if you've been a victim of a scam, report it to the appropriate authorities to prevent others from falling victim. Remember, the majority of people are honest, but it's essential to approach new interactions with a healthy dose of skepticism until you've established trust.

    • Caution and Skepticism: Lessons from a Criminal's RedemptionBe wary of hasty decisions, prioritize growth and redemption, and learn from past mistakes.

It's important to be cautious and skeptical before making decisions that involve sharing personal information or parting with significant resources. This was a theme in the speaker's experience of reaching the pinnacle of criminal activity only to find that material possessions and fleeting relationships didn't bring lasting happiness. Instead, he emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities for growth and redemption, as he did when he met his wife in prison and turned his life around. Another interesting point was the contrasting prison systems in France and the United States, with the former focusing on punishment and the latter on rehabilitation. Despite the harsh conditions in French prisons, the low recidivism rate suggests that this approach may be effective in preventing repeat offenses. Overall, the speaker's story underscores the value of learning from past mistakes and striving for personal growth.

    • Stories from a Former Con Artist: Staying Vigilant Against FraudBe aware of various types of scams like identity theft, investment scams, and romance scams. Protect yourself by staying vigilant and taking proactive measures.

The world of scams and fraud is more prevalent and easier to execute than ever before due to technology. Frank Abagnale, a former notorious con artist, shared his experiences and insights on the topic, emphasizing the importance of staying vigilant and being aware of various types of scams such as identity theft, investment scams, and romance scams. Abagnale's personal experiences with being caught by the FBI and his friendship with the agent who caught him, Joe Shea, inspired him to write books and dedicate his life to helping prevent scams and fraud. In 2017, there were 16.7 million victims of fraud who lost a staggering $16.8 billion. The stories shared by Abagnale serve as a reminder that fraud is a constant threat and that individuals must take proactive measures to protect themselves.

    • Scams target different demographicsBe aware of scam trends and protect yourself, married men are common investment fraud targets, single, non-college individuals under $50k are more likely to fall for lottery scams, women, particularly those making less than $50k, are disproportionately affected by identity theft.

Identity theft, lottery scams, and investment fraud target different demographics, and people are more susceptible to scams under stress or when they're slow to take preventative actions. For instance, married, college-educated men over $50k are prime targets for investment fraud, while single, non-college educated individuals under $50k are more likely to fall for lottery scams. Women, particularly those who are single and make less than $50k, are disproportionately affected by identity theft. One infamous scam involved a man posing as an airline pilot and hiring college girls as fake airline attendants to travel with him in Europe, cashing their paychecks and racking up debt. People should be aware of these trends and take steps to protect themselves from becoming victims. The movie "Catch Me If You Can" is a fascinating portrayal of such scams and is highly recommended.

    1046: Hydrotherapy | Skeptical Sunday

    1046: Hydrotherapy | Skeptical Sunday

Ice plunges, hot soaks, and eight glasses a day: Jessica Wynn splashes cold water on hydrotherapy myths and explores potential benefits on Skeptical Sunday!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss:

    • Hydrotherapy, which includes various uses of water for health purposes, lacks substantial scientific evidence for many of its claimed benefits, especially for generally healthy individuals.
    • The popular belief that we need to drink eight glasses of water a day is a myth perpetuated by beverage companies. Our bodies are well-equipped to signal thirst when we need hydration.
    • Extreme temperature changes in hydrotherapy, such as alternating between hot and cold water, can be dangerous and potentially lead to fainting, heart problems, or drowning.
    • Many of the alleged benefits of hydrotherapy, such as improved circulation or muscle recovery, can often be achieved through other, potentially safer methods like exercise or breathing techniques.
    • Hydrotherapy does show promise in specific medical contexts, such as pain management for fibromyalgia, easing labor during childbirth, and assisting with certain rehabilitation exercises. If you're interested in exploring hydrotherapy for health reasons, consult with a medical professional to determine if it's appropriate for your individual needs and how to practice it safely.

    • Keeping secrets can be physically and emotionally painful for humans. This evolved as a mechanism to encourage social cohesion and information sharing within tribal communities.
    • There's a difference between secrets and privacy. What is considered a secret versus private information often depends on societal norms and can change over time.
    • Technology is making it increasingly difficult to keep secrets, with devices like smartwatches and phones potentially revealing information we'd rather keep hidden.
    • Virtue signaling and victim signaling are common behaviors, especially on social media, where people may pretend to hold certain beliefs or experiences for status or attention.
    • Sharing appropriate secrets can increase intimacy and strengthen relationships. By thoughtfully opening up to others, we can build deeper connections and foster trust, leading to more meaningful interactions and a stronger support network.
    • And much more...

1042: Sex Trafficking | Skeptical Sunday

1042: Sex Trafficking | Skeptical Sunday

Is sex trafficking really a global crisis or just an overblown conspiracy theory? Andrew Gold reveals truths and misconceptions on this Skeptical Sunday.

Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by On the Edge host Andrew Gold!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss:

    • Sex trafficking knows no borders, and the United States stands out as a particularly active region for this crime. It victimizes individuals regardless of age — notably, more than a fourth of those trafficked are minors.
    • The scale of sex trafficking is difficult to determine accurately, with estimates varying widely. This uncertainty stems from the underground nature of the crime and challenges in data collection.
    • Sex trafficking victims often suffer severe physical and mental health consequences, including STIs, injuries, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse issues. The average lifespan of women in prostitution is tragically short at around 34 years.
    • The issue of sex trafficking is frequently politicized and weaponized, sometimes exaggerated for political gain. However, it remains a serious problem that ruins thousands of lives through organized crime networks and individual traffickers.
    • Education and awareness are key tools in combating sex trafficking. By learning about the issue, discussing it openly, and spreading accurate information, we can help inform potential victims about the dangers and contribute to prevention efforts. Everyone can play a role in this by staying informed and sharing knowledge with others.

1040: Tareena Shakil | An ISIS Recruit's Journey and Escape Part Two

1040: Tareena Shakil | An ISIS Recruit's Journey and Escape Part Two

How does ISIS radicalize Westerners? Here, Tareena Shakil, who joined and escaped the group, reveals the manipulation behind her own recruitment. [Pt. 2/2 — find part 1 here!]

    What We Discuss:

    • Tareena Shakil, a British woman, ran away to join ISIS in Syria in 2014 after experiencing domestic abuse and being radicalized online.
    • While in Syria, Tareena realized ISIS was not what she expected and decided to escape across the border to Turkey with her young son.
    • Tareena was arrested upon return to the UK and served three years in prison for joining ISIS. She was the first British woman to be imprisoned for joining the group.
    • Tareena went through a deradicalization program in prison, which she found helpful in understanding how she has been groomed and radicalized.
    • Tareena now works to raise awareness about online radicalization and grooming, showing that it's possible to learn from past mistakes and use one's experiences to prevent others from falling into similar traps. Her story demonstrates the importance of critical thinking and seeking support when feeling vulnerable.

256: Malcolm Gladwell | What We Should Know about Talking to Strangers

256: Malcolm Gladwell | What We Should Know about Talking to Strangers

Malcolm Gladwell (@gladwell) has written bestsellers that are probably on your shelf right now, including The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, and What the Dog Saw. His latest book is Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know about the People We Don't Know.

What We Discuss with Malcolm Gladwell:

    • Why, if we don't know how to talk to strangers, we invite conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world.
    • Why the information we gather from face-to-face human interaction isn't as uniquely valuable as we think it is.
    • Why television makes us worse at reading other people.
    • Why we think we can tell if someone is lying, guilty, or deceptive -- and why we're almost always wrong.
    • What determines the direction of Malcolm's projects, and how he researches and organizes the massive amount of information that goes into them.

365: Benjamin Hardy | How to Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs

Benjamin Hardy (@BenjaminPHardy) is an organizational psychologist and author of Willpower Doesn't Work: Discover the Hidden Keys to Success and Personality Isn't Permanent: Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs and Rewrite Your Story.

What We Discuss with Benjamin Hardy:

    • Why treating the results of a "scientific" personality test like Myers & Briggs or Enneagram as gospel is akin to trusting horoscopes to safely guide your life decisions -- inaccurate and potentially dangerous.
    • Hear the story about how Benjamin and his wife almost didn't get married because a personality test indicated they weren't an ideal match.
    • What looking back at the person you were 10 or 20 years ago should reveal about personality as an unfixed, malleable quality.
    • Why categorizing yourself or accepting labels leads to a tunnel vision of mindlessness that tends to accentuate the negative qualities you believe yourself to have.
    • You're always a work in progress -- you're never "finished." The person you'll be in 10 years may well be as different as you are from the person you were 10 years ago. So who do you want the future you to be?
