    Podcast Summary

    • Finding Balance: From Technology to Retirement and BeyondTake time to disconnect from technology, secure your retirement income, and appreciate historical figures' impact on history

Our relationship with technology, specifically smartphones, can be distracting, but it's important to find a balance. US Cellular encourages us to put our phones down for five minutes to reconnect with the world around us. Meanwhile, Consumer Cellular offers affordable wireless service options for those looking to save money. In the world of retirement, Gainbridge introduces the Parity Flex Annuity, designed to help women secure a retirement income they can't outlive. On a lighter note, Cardi B shared her fascination with historical figures like FDR during an interview on Hot Ones, expressing her admiration for his leadership during the Great Depression and World War II. Despite her past endorsement of high taxes, she also expressed her dislike for income tax. Overall, these discussions highlight the importance of finding balance in various aspects of life, whether it's our relationship with technology, finances, or historical figures.

    • Eleanor and Sara Roosevelt's intricate family historySara Roosevelt's influence on FDR and their unique bond led to tension and rivalry with Eleanor, affecting their interactions throughout FDR's political career.

Eleanor and Sara Roosevelt's complex relationship showcases the challenges and dynamics of intergenerational family dynamics and power struggles. Sara, who was much younger than Franklin D. Roosevelt's father, became a significant influence on FDR's life due to her husband's absence and their unique sibling-like bond. This dynamic led to tension and rivalry when FDR married Eleanor, whom Sara disapproved of due to their distant familial relation and perceived lack of adequacy. The strained relationship between Eleanor and Sara affected their interactions throughout FDR's political career, including disagreements over his foreign policies. Despite their differences, Sara's political activism and influence during the New Deal era made her a trailblazing figure for women in politics. This intricate family history highlights the complexities of power dynamics and relationships within families and the impact they can have on public figures.

    • Online exploitation of minors: A rampant issue with severe consequencesOver 10,000 tips of financial sex extortion were reported in 2022, leading to emotional distress and even suicide. Schools and parents must prioritize online safety education and monitoring to prevent these situations.

Online exploitation of minors, particularly boys, is a rampant issue with devastating consequences. According to reports, over 10,000 tips of financial sex extortion were received in 2022, with the number continuing to rise. These situations often lead to extreme embarrassment and fear, causing some victims to take their own lives. Schools need to address this issue by introducing education on online safety and appropriate behavior at an early age. The consequences of neglecting this issue can be severe, including financial loss, emotional distress, and even suicide. It's crucial for parents to engage in open conversations with their children about online safety and to monitor their children's online activities to prevent such situations from occurring. The increasing prevalence of these incidents underscores the need for heightened awareness and proactive measures to protect children from online predators.

    • The Education Gap: College-Educated vs Working-Class VotersCollege-educated voters shifted towards Democrats on economics and culture, while working-class voters leaned towards Republicans, creating a polarized political climate.

The divide between college-educated and working-class voters in America has significantly shifted the political landscape. College-educated voters have moved towards the Democratic party on economic and cultural issues, while working-class voters, particularly whites, have leaned towards the Republican party. This shift began around 2004, and the education gap on economic issues is now smaller than the party gap was in the 1980s. Interestingly, it used to be that college-educated voters were the primary culture war voters, but now cultural issues have become a priority for all voters. This shift can be attributed to the fact that college-educated voters are economically secure and have the means to focus on cultural issues. The conversation on campuses today is dominated by cultural issues, while in the 1960s, the focus was on economic and civil rights issues. The diploma divide has led to a polarized political climate, with economics often flowing downstream from cultural concerns.

    • Political focus on cultural issues overshadows economic consensusThe political landscape's focus on cultural issues has overshadowed economic consensus, but education level remains the best predictor of political affiliation. The pandemic has brought about a shift in attitudes towards economic issues, with a renewed focus on workers' rights and fairness.

As the political landscape has become more polarized, both Democrats and Republicans have focused on cultural issues as a way to differentiate themselves and signal their identity to voters. This trend, which gained momentum in the 1980s, has led to a situation where economic issues are often overshadowed by cultural ones, even though there is significant agreement among the American people on many economic issues. Despite this, the education level of a voter remains the best predictor of their political affiliation. However, the pandemic has brought about a shift in attitudes towards economic issues, with people expressing greater dissatisfaction with the status quo and a renewed focus on workers' rights and economic fairness. Ultimately, it will take significant political change to shift the focus back to economic issues and deliver on the promises made by both parties.

    • Aaron Rodgers Calls Travis Kelce 'Mister Pfizer' on Pat McAfee's ShowRodgers referred to Kelce as 'Mister Pfizer' in a lighthearted manner during an interview, acknowledging Kelce's partnership with Pfizer for promoting vaccines. Some see it as a sign of Rodgers' growing disinterest in taking himself seriously.

During his weekly appearance on Pat McAfee's show on ESPN, recovering Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers called Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce "Mister Pfizer" in a lighthearted manner, referencing Kelce's partnership with the pharmaceutical giant for promoting COVID-19 and flu vaccines in commercials. Rodgers had a post-game chat with Kelce, which he kept private. Rodgers has been vocal about his skepticism towards vaccines and woke culture in recent appearances on shows like Joe Rogan's podcast. Some commentators see Rodgers' actions as clout chasing, but others view it as a sign of his growing disinterest in taking himself too seriously towards the end of his career. The NFL community, including former teammate AJ Hawk and Kelce's fans, had various reactions to the situation. Jason Kelce, Travis' brother and one of the greatest centers in football history, also received recognition for his Super Bowl speech in 2018. Aaron Rodgers' evolving public persona and serious-to-lighthearted approach to his career and personal beliefs continue to be topics of discussion.

    • The Hippie to QAnon Pipeline: Finding Common Ground on IssuesDifferent backgrounds can find common ground on certain issues, encouraging open and respectful dialogue and fact-checking, ultimately benefiting the American public.

The so-called "hippie to QAnon pipeline" refers to the convergence of conservative soccer moms and hippies on certain issues, such as medical freedom and vaccines. This phenomenon is not limited to Aaron Rodgers or vaccines, but rather represents a middle ground where people with different backgrounds find common ground on certain questions. It's important to remember that self-identified free thinkers, including those who claim to follow the science, can be obnoxious and not as free thinking as they believe. The American public benefits when these discussions can take place in broad daylight, allowing for healthy debate and fact-checking. Meanwhile, in Arizona, there's a real-life issue unfolding as the governor, Katie Hobbs, recently shut down a corrupt deal with Saudi Arabia that involved the use of Arizona water for alfalfa farms, which were then exported to Saudi Arabia to feed their cows. This is a significant win for water rights for Americans in the drought-plagued Southwest. Overall, it's essential to encourage open and respectful dialogue on various issues, while also being aware of potential biases and misinformation. By fostering an environment that allows for healthy debate and fact-checking, we can make informed decisions and work towards solutions that benefit everyone.

    • Water exploitation in ArizonaPolitical influence allowed companies to pump water without accountability, causing severe water shortages and affecting local communities. Accountability and action are needed to prevent similar situations in other states and protect water and food security.

In Arizona, a company exploited long-standing water usage laws to pump vast amounts of water from the ground without accountability, using their political influence to keep these deals in place. This led to severe water shortages in drought-stricken areas, affecting local communities and workers. Now, with increased scrutiny and democratic leadership, some leases have been canceled, but more action is needed to address this issue. Similar situations exist in other states, where foreign entities buy access to land and resources, exacerbating water and food security concerns. It's crucial that governments and citizens hold companies accountable for their water usage and prevent the exploitation of political systems. The recent progress in Arizona serves as a reminder that public outrage and pressure can lead to positive changes.

    • Wife of Senator Menendez Involved in Fatal Car Accident, Received Special TreatmentThe wife of a US senator was involved in a fatal car accident, but received special treatment and no thorough investigation was conducted, raising concerns about potential influence and corruption.

The wife of Senator Bob Menendez, Crystal, was involved in a fatal car accident in 2018 where a man was killed, but she was not held for questioning or given a field sobriety test at the time. Later, she texted with an Egyptian businessman about her need for a new car, which he provided her with a Mercedes Benz C 300 Convertible. The circumstances surrounding the incident have raised eyebrows due to the lack of a thorough investigation and the involvement of a retired police officer who appeared on the scene to support Crystal. The incident was not reported in the news at the time and only came to light through an indictment. The lack of a thorough investigation and the special treatment Crystal received due to her relationship with a sitting US senator are concerning.

    • Concerns over transparency and safety of Apeel's plant-based coatingApeel's plant-based coating extends produce shelf life, but concerns exist over its transparency and safety due to the extraction process's potential harmful residuals and heavy metals.

While the innovation of Apeel's plant-based coating to keep produce fresher for longer is impressive, concerns have arisen regarding the transparency and safety of the coating's ingredients. The coating, which contains monoeniglycerides, is extracted from grape seeds through heavy industrial processing and is considered generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA. However, the self-certification process for GRAS ingredients allows companies to determine their own safety, and the extraction process involves potentially harmful residuals and heavy metals. These chemicals, classified as a pesticide, are eventually put on all produce, raising concerns about the potential exposure to these substances. It's important for consumers to be aware of these concerns and advocate for more transparency and independent verification of the safety of food additives.

    • Apeel's OrganiPeel Raises Concerns with Warning Label and Ambiguous Ingredient ListApeel's OrganiPeel, a produce coating, faces concerns due to its unclear label and unknown ingredients, but Apeel assures it's safe and nutrient-retaining, and their manufacturing processes have improved

OrganiPeel, Apeel's organic formulation used to coat organic produce, has raised concerns due to its warning label and ambiguous ingredient list. The active ingredient is labeled as citric acid at 6%, but the other 99.34% is unspecified. Some worry that this coating, which halts visual decay, may also lock in nutrients but not all nutrients are retained, and older produce may look fresher than it is. Apeel's senior leadership recently addressed these concerns, stating that the other ingredients are just purified mono and diglycerides and food grade sodium bicarbonate. They also revealed that their manufacturing processes have changed, and they no longer use heptane, ethyl acetate, or intentionally add heavy metals. The company claims that their product is safe for human consumption and maintains that produce coated with Apeel retains nutrients better than uncoated produce. Apeel has attracted significant investment and recognition for its technology. While the science behind Apeel is still a topic of discussion, it's clear that the company has a bright future in the food industry.

    • Exploring the importance of balance in various aspects of lifeFrom food systems to technology use and retirement planning, it's essential to advocate for systems designed for people and strive for balance in our lives.

The direction of our food system is a cause for concern, with a potential shift towards centralized, industrial farming that could further remove communities from their food sources. The financialization of the food system, as discussed in relation to Apeel, raises legitimate concerns about transparency and control. While opinions on Apeel and its role in addressing issues like climate change and food insecurity may vary, it's crucial to continue the conversation about the importance of food and advocating for a food system designed for the people. US Cellular's campaign to encourage putting down phones for five minutes is an interesting attempt to help us reconnect with our surroundings, while Gainbridge offers retirement solutions tailored to women's unique needs. Viking invites us to explore Europe in comfort on their all-inclusive, adult-only cruises. These diverse topics remind us of the importance of balance in our lives, whether it's in our food systems, our relationships with technology, or our retirement plans.

Atul Gawande on surgery, writing, Obamacare, and indie music

Atul Gawande on surgery, writing, Obamacare, and indie music
I've wanted to do this interview for a long, long time.Atul Gawande is a surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He's a professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health. He is executive director of Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation, and chairman of Lifebox, a nonprofit organization making surgery safer globally. He's a New Yorker writer. He's the author of some of my favorite books, including Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance and The Checklist Manifesto. He's a MacArthur Genius. Atul Gawande makes me feel like a slow, boring, unproductive person. What makes it worse is that he's a helluva nice guy, too. And he knows more new music than I do. There haven't been many conversations on this podcast I've looked forward to more, or enjoyed as much. Among many other things, we talked about:- How Atul makes time to do all of the writing, large-scale research, and surgery he does- His time working in Congress and in the White House- His writing process and how it’s evolved since his early days writing for Slate- Why he hates writing and likes being edited (and why I am the exact opposite)- His thoughts on ignorance, ineptitude, why we fail at things, and what hand washing has to do with it- How effective Medicaid coverage is in improving health outcomes- The ways we need to more effectively deliver existing knowledge and technology rather than always focusing on the next big discovery- What he thinks we’ve learned so far from Obamacare- How Rivers Cuomo from Weezer has applied lessons from Atul’s writing to his music- His work with the Clintons, Jim Cooper, and Al Gore and thoughts on their private versus public personas- How all the different parts of his life — the writing, the surgery, the policy work — come together into one single engine for actually making change- What new albums he thinks everyone should listen toAnd so much more. Talking to Atul was a real pleasure. I hope you enjoy it too. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
