#11: April NBA recap: Trades, Standings, MVP, and more!

Defense wins championships. It's the most cliche phrase in football (alongside it's a game of inches). This episode we compare two of the greatest defenses of the latest 20 years, the Legion of Boom Seahawks with the 2000s Ravens.

The LOB, or Legion of Boom, were different in the fact that they were spearheaded by their DBs, specifically Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, and Kam Chancellor. With a pair of Linebackers in KJ Wright and Bobby Wagner, and a cast of solid rushers led by Michael Bennet, they had talent at all 11 positions and all 3 levels, which led to a great defense. Their best year was probably 2013 where they won the super bowl and picked off nearly twice as many passes as touchdowns allowed through the air in the regular season. In their 3-5 year run, they went to back to back Super Bowls and won one of them, demolishing one of the most statically proficient scoring offenses in the 2013 Broncos.

The Ravens defense's best year statistically was 2000, where they won the Super Bowl and were led by a young Ray Lewis and a veteran Rod Woodson. We take a look at their entire 2000s run though, as Ed Reed was drafted in 2002 and Terell Suggs in 2003 to complete a 3 headed monster that collected 4 Defensive Player of the Year Awards in 12 years (2 by Ray, 1 for Reed and Suggs each) in that span of dominance. 2 Super Bowls in 2 appearances 11 years apart isn't bad either.

But who was better? It's always hard to compare eras, but looking at the way they were built (Ravens with HOFs at each level that were all first round picks), vs. the LOB (many of them draft steals on their rookie contracts and a team defense that gelled well) it provides for a fun comparison. We all know defense wins championships, but offense draws viewers. It's fun to watch, and it changes the way the game is played. 2 teams come to mind when we talk game changing offenses, and the similarities in them is what made us want to do a deep dive.

The Greatest Show on Turf, the nickname for the 1999-2001 St. Louis Rams were led by a dynamic duo of WRs drafted 5 years apart (Issac Bruce and Torry Holt), an amazing RB (Marshall Faulk), and a gun-slinger at QB in Kurt Warner. They also had a HOF level piece on the offensive line in Orlando Pace. Those pieces broke offensive records in their time, as well as collected 3 MVPs (in 3 Years), a Super Bowl Championship, and another Super Bowl appearance.

The 2000s Colts had their own dynamic duo of WRs drafted 5 years apart (Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne), an amazing RB (Edgerrin James), and a gun-slinger at QB in Peyton Manning They also had a HOF level piece on the offensive line in Jeff Saturday. Those pieces broke offensive records in their time, as well as collected 4 MVPs (in 8 Years), a Super Bowl Championship, and another Super Bowl appearance.

But who was better? It's hard to compare eras, especially because the rule change in the 2003 offseason but we break down some of the impact to the game they had, the successes they had, and which ones were our personal preference.

We're back with another NFL GM strategy episode! Last few (Episode #7 and #23 give it a listen) was greatly received and was requested to do a further deep dive, so this episode we talk about how to transition from your generational talent at the most important position in football, the QB.

This topic was inspired by Simsinator's Colts (Peyton-->Luck) as well as the current situation in Green Bay, plus their all too familiar past with this in Favre-->Rodgers well documented transition.

We cover the past 20 years in this epsiode, so also throw in Drew Brees passing the San Diego torch to Phillip Rivers in the mid 2000s. Unfortunately, this crosses out another well documented and heated transition, Joe Montana to Steve Young in the early 90s.

In this episode we'll do another variant of player comparisons, this one covering the TE position. Until recent years, it's been mostly a blocking and a few catches here and there. Then the rise of these candidates made it to the fact where TEs became the most un-guardable position in offense: too fast for LBs, and too big for safeties and corners.

We felt the 4 main ones in the conversation where Antonio Gates, Rob Gronkowski, Shannon Sharpe, and Tony Gonzalez. Each have had decade long careers (Gronk is now back and maybe even extending it) and were dominant in their own rights.

Perseverance, grit, and coming back give it the color that made everyone root for the underdog. This is, the Kurt Warner Story.

We talk about the many twists and turns it took for Kurt to even get into the league, which was A LOT. Multiple tryouts, NFL Europe, Arena Football, injuries, and more all played a big part.

But then when the opportunity arose, Kurt took the league by storm with the Greatest Show on Turf; early 2000s Rams were a sight to see.

BUT, Kurt Warner's story always has ups and downs, and the middle 5 years of his career were so bad that people were ready to discredit his Rams' achievements.  A late resurgence and magical Cardinals run saved him and cemented his legacy as the true underdog story of a man who never quits.
