    About this Episode

    If 2020 was a chapter in an athlete story, it would be classified as a massive challenge and a setback that includes disappointment and most certainly failure.

    But, the great athlete would navigate, learn, and overcome. A great athlete has the tools and wisdom to realize the path of performance is never linear. Today is Part Two on our series of performance culture and the athletic mindset. Last week, we dug into the cultural model of performance. It's the model that we utilize at Purple Patch and it is a way of doing something that unites individuals and creates a collective resilience.

    And at the end of the day, the individuals that thrive within that culture lean into a suite of traits and characteristics that make up what we call the athletic mindset. Now, we've learned over the last few months of turbulence, that these traits are the very traits that foster the resilience, adaptability and the growth needed, not to just navigate, but to thrive through these times.

    What are these characteristics and traits? Matt digs in, dissects, and tells stories about the athlete journey and, of course, the athlete mindset. You do not need to be an athlete to lean into the athletic mindset.     We recently received a question from a Purple Patch Tri Squad athlete, asking if the Purple Patch Coaching Team keeps up with recent trends and scientific advances when it comes to developing and evolving Purple Patch training. He was particularly interested in factors such as Zone 2 training, blood lactate testing, keto or fat adaptive diets, and the methods of Norwegian athletes in endurance performance. He also wondered why the Purple Patch Tri Squad doesn't add forced rest days each week when prescribing training.

    At the core of his curiosity was a broader question: Does Purple Patch consider advances in training methodologies? We realized this was the perfect opportunity to frame this episode as one big Q&A session, with that being the only question.

    In this episode, Ironman Master Coach Matt Dixon provides an answer. Using examples of his coaching approach for various athletes, Matt illustrates the dynamic lens that must be applied to each athlete while simplifying the training process by relying on a tried-and-true concept: Is it right for you?     Episode 302: Training for Grit – Why Do So Many Executives Love IRONMAN and Triathlon?

    Throughout our coaching journey, we have shared numerous stories of success in training top-tier triathletes and C-suite executives who strive to achieve and maintain high performance in their personal and professional lives.   Over two decades of coaching both groups, we have observed strong parallels in the challenges they face and the solutions to those challenges that are universally applicable.

    In this week's episode of the Purple Patch Podcast, Ironman Master Coach Matt Dixon highlights those elements by focusing on executives and CEOs. He delves deeper into the reasons why many of them choose to take on the Ironman Triathlon, one of the world's most challenging sporting events. How have so many been successful at adapting to the demands of training and preparation while maintaining efficiency in their professional roles?

    (11:27) Let's consider the typical executive - massive competing demands at work, the requirement for each of them to show up their very best every single day. All of them requiring capacity to respond to uncontrollable and unexpected events, market forces, the pandemic. And often doing all of this in the workplace, managing all of those competing demands, while also having a really engaged and very busy home and family life. So the obvious question to me is, you have a time-starved executive, who then decides to add in a journey to IRONMAN. The obvious question you always get is, how do they fit it all in? How is that possible?

    Matt explores these questions by sharing insights he has gained from coaching executives over the years and offering perspective on how they achieve a balance between all of their competing demands. He also examines the overall appeal of Iron Man and why it draws so many athletes to the challenge year after year. Matt highlights the benefits of pursuing such a demanding goal and the positive impact it has on every aspect of an executive's life.

    With compelling research to support his observations, Matt details the lessons we can all apply to our own lives, regardless of our profession or background.

    (38:23) If you're listening today, and you haven't started your performance journey, I'm not saying in order for you to be successful, you need to be a CEO, you need to be an executive, you need to sign up for an Ironman, none of that. But we can draw lessons from it. Because we can join the dots and realize that a journey of sport, health, fitness, whatever that means to you, is going to impact positively how you show up in life.

    We continue to kick off the year with our on-location podcasts from the 2024 Purple Patch Kona Camp. This year, we have 25 athletes who have put in some hard work and learned some valuable lessons.

    Robbie shares experience and knowledge from his 12-year career as a pro cyclist, and more than 20 years providing expert training programs to endurance athletes of all levels, to dial in what he believes are the critical skills every cyclist should develop.

    Using Robbie’s approach and development as a model for training as a time-starved athlete, Matt focuses on how to leverage indoor bike trainers to elevate your race craft and become a better and faster cyclist. 

    Matt and Robbie put remote coaching under the microscope and examine the common mistakes athletes make in using indoor bike trainers and share strategies for getting the most out of indoor training. They also explore Velocity’s unique training software and how it aims to elevate the quality of engagement between coaches and athletes through live instruction and immediate feedback on real-time athlete performance data.

    The goal of today’s episode is to highlight the training tools available to time-starved athletes, to help create an individualized training experience that delivers both the physiological adaptations for improving speed as well as the skill set for executing efficiently on the bike.
