    About this Episode

Over the past 4 years, the term vegan has regularly hit the headlines in such a positive way. From Beyonce praising the health benefits of veganism in 2015 on Good Morning America to the innovative car company Tesla announcing in 2017 its advancement toward a 100% vegan interior for all their car models, to Burger King, McDonald's, and KFC rolling out plant-based alternatives to their flagship meat-based offerings throughout 2019.

Sustainable and cruelty-free choices to just about everything you can think of have popped up around the world, and large meat-based corporations have taken notice of the rising demand and are investing big money into meatless innovations.

And who better to give us the scoop on all things vegan in the media than award-winning journalist and PR consultant, Katrina Fox.

Katrina Fox is the founder of VeganBusinessMedia.com, host of the Vegan Business Talk podcast and author of Vegan Ventures: Start and Grow an Ethical Business.

She has written extensively for niche and mainstream media for 17 years on animal advocacy and ethical business and was even a regular FORBES contributor specializing in writing about vegan and plant-based businesses.

Katrina lives in Sydney, Australia, and during our interview, we talk about:

    • Katrina’s 80/20 rule for sharing the vegan message in the way a business would when marketing to a mainstream audience, and how to determine when to use the terms plant-based or vegan
    • Whether or not there is such a thing as objectivity in journalism, and I know you’ll be stunned to hear Katrina’s answer to that
    • And what changes she is seeing in the global marketplace for plant-based foods today and how it will impact our future

Plus, Katrina talks about how she helps vegan business owners in approaching the media the right way to maximize opportunities for free publicity. So if you’re thinking of getting publicity for your vegan venture, be sure to listen to the end for that!

25: Transforming Cattle Ranches into Compassionate Businesses | Renee King-Sonnen

Did you know Texas is going vegan? At least, with sustainable farming pioneers like this guest, Texas and other cattle-raising states are well on their way...

Renee King-Sonnen - former cattle rancher's wife who loved rodeos and cowboy boots - is the Founder and Executive Director of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary - a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Since going vegan in 2014, Renee has converted Rowdy Girl Sanctuary from a cattle ranch to a sanctuary for over 120 animals (and her husband from a multi-generational cattle rancher to an animal rescuing vegan). This is the first documented beef cattle ranch vegan conversion in history, and also has pioneering initiatives such as:

    1. The Rancher Advocacy Program which transitions cattle ranchers and animal farmers out of animal agribusiness and into other viable farming and business practices,
    2. and Families Choosing Compassion is a compassionate alternative to Future Farmers of America and 4-H and brings families of children together that are saddened by the end result that leads to the slaughter of raising their animal friends as “school projects.”

Rowdy Girl Sanctuary inspires other ranchers to experience a paradigm shift while helping them move from participating in the cruelty of factory farming to living out compassion towards the animals raised for food.

20: Olympian Unravels the Truth About Why Dairy Makes Us Sick | Dotsie Bausch

20: Olympian Unravels the Truth About Why Dairy Makes Us Sick | Dotsie Bausch

If you are looking for some clarity around what the deal is with dairy, and why a professional athlete...or better yet, an Olympian would choose to ditch it, then this episode is for you.

Dotsie Bausch has become a powerful influencer for plant-based eating for athletes and non-athletes alike.

In the Olympics while riding for Team USA while facing staggering odds, she produced a medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games, eight US national championships, two Pan American gold medals and a world record! You can find her triumphant story chronicled in the Netflix documentary “Personal Gold.”

Dotsie is one of the stars in the newly released film The Game Changers, which chronicles one of the world's most dangerous myths about protein, and has been named by VegNews in 2019 as one of the top 20 most influential vegans in the world.

Her popular TEDx Talk titled “Olympic Level Compassion,” has garnered over 275,000 views and has been a catalyst of change for thousands of people.

Her latest initiative is founding the non-profit called Switch4Good, proving that cow’s milk is not part of a high-performance diet.

In this interview, we chat about:

    • How Dotsie once struggled with an eating disorder that nearly claimed her life before choosing a vegan lifestyle, and she sets the record straight about some people’s concerns about whether or not veganism is an eating disorder.
    • She shines some light on dietary racism - one of the most overlooked food injustice issues directly affecting the livelihood of our African American, Asian, and Latino populations - and I think you’ll really feel like your eyes have been opened to this issue...
    • and she explains what milk is meant for, how it’s produced, and why it's not as healthy or even necessary as we’ve been taught to believe.

Plus Dotsie gives us fun and helpful tips during your vegan transition for the upcoming holidays.

You can find a Youtube link to Dotsie’s recap of the USDA 2020 dietary guidelines hearing posted by Plant Based News, which discusses food injustice particularly involving people of color HERE: http://bit.ly/2NIvBWV

19: What's Wrong With the Research About Nutrition? | Ashley Kitchens, RDN, LDN

19: What's Wrong With the Research About Nutrition? | Ashley Kitchens, RDN, LDN

If you’re wondering about what a holiday meal looks like without the animal as the centerpiece, or the side items dripping in butter or cream, then this guest has gotcha covered!

Today we are chatting with Ashley Kitchens, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist, and Nutrition Coach who takes a holistic approach to creating lifelong wellness for her clients. She earned her Masters of Public Health and Nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is the founder of Plant Centered Prep where she empowers individuals to live a healthier, more plant-based lifestyle. Ashley believes that a positive outlook on life combined with a positive relationship to food produce the energy and vitality necessary to fuel a joyful life.

Although she grew up on an Angus cattle farm in Indiana where meat was a central part of her diet, she has an infectious enthusiasm for eating plant-based and helping others make the shift, too. When she’s not checking in with clients, on the road visiting nursing homes, or meal prepping for the week, you might find her walking her dogs in downtown Durham, sweating it out at a CrossFit session, or making delicious, plant-based dishes for friends and family.

In this chat, we get into:

    • How Ashley reversed her chronic GI issues that caused her incredible discomfort, bloating, fatigue and constipation for sooo many years of her life
    • As a dietitian, her take on - what she calls ‘headliner’ diets - and what the research consistently shows regarding proper nutrition
    • She provides clarity on which carbohydrate-rich foods are ok for diabetics - I can tell you it’s not the conventional wisdom that you are probably familiar with hearing
    • And, some incredible tips for anyone just starting down the plant-based path...and even if you’ve been traveling this road of transition for a while, I think you’ll still get some great insights from Ashley that you might not have thought about before!

Plus, we dish up ideas for Thanksgiving and discuss some of the challenges that often pop up for new vegans during the holidays.

Ashley is speaking at Remedy Food in Portland, OR on Nov. 7, 2019: www.remedyfood.org/
