    About this Episode

If you're a fan of mountain biking, chances are you might have kids who have an interest as well. Joining a team is one of the best ways to meet and learn from others, get great coaching, build camaraderie, and have an opportunity to compete. But the benefits of joining a team go beyond that according to the teens and parents we talked to, it will not only give you a boost on the trails but can set you up for success in life.

It was a fun day at Studio809 as we got to chatting with Mason and Trinity Meredith along with their Dad Shane and coaches Eric and Nick about what makes the Front Rangers Junior Mountain Biking Team and Highlanders High School Composite Racing Team so great. Find out more about their experiences, recommendations and how to get involved in the local junior mountain biking scene in this episode of Pedal the Springs.

26: Club Spotlight: Live Audience with the Colorado Springs Cycling Club

Meet the Colorado Springs Cycling Club, the longest running cycling club in the Springs. Torie sits down with the club’s board for our first podcast recorded in front of a live audience. Hear about the variety of club rides and offerings, advocacy efforts and events supported and what’s new for 2024, in addition to diving into the 37-year history of the club with some of the club’s past presidents and its most active members. It was a packed house with more than 40 people in attendance. If you’re looking for a great local club to join, listen here to find out more and check out http://bikesprings.org/ for all of the ride schedules, information and to join.

The Colorado Springs Cycling Club is a non-profit community recreational cycling club open to all ages and abilities. It was started in the mid 80s by Bob and Anne Smith following the ending of the Strata Cycling Club. When Torie moved to Colorado Springs 22 years ago, the club became her first family of friends and she fell in love with the Springs riding with them. She’s been on the board for several years now and also helped put on the Club’s Buena Vista Bike Festival for about 4 years in the 2010s. It was truly Torie’s pleasure to be able to host this special live podcast and season kickoff of the Club. There are so many exciting things happening with the club this year. Membership is $21/individual and $28/family for 1 year.

23: Coach Spotlight - Matheny Endurance

If you’re looking to take your cycling to the next level in 2024 – whether you’re an amateur or pro, training for fitness or to reach a performance goal – getting a personal coach can help get you there.

Daniel Matheny has been coaching athletes of all ages and abilities in a variety of sports (primarily cycling) for over two decades, from Juniors at USA Cycling to pros at CTS. Now through his Matheny Endurance, he offers athletes a range of services – from mapping out personalized custom plans to providing on-site race day support. Matheny is a top athlete himself and also the local go-to in Colorado Springs for setting up courses for some of our top area races – like the Pikes Peak APEX and Rampart Rager Gravel. We talk about his background, services, trainer tips and where he goes for inspiration, in this edition of Pedal the Springs.

22: Local Bike Shop Spotlight – Ted’s Bicycles

It’s the oldest independently-owned bike shop in Colorado Springs, with a history of not just providing great service, sales and rider support for over 52 years, but of contributing to the community with impacts that reach far beyond the cycling world, to make this city a better place to live for everyone.

In this edition of Pedal the Springs, meet Tony, the owner of Ted’s Bicycles, and find out more about the shop’s history and the many activities and events he has initiated and supported throughout the years, from repairing bicycles for an annual Christmas giveaway to those less fortunate, to helping launch one of the most iconic area events, the Starlight Spectacular, that funds our local trails and open spaces, to providing more than 300 bike racks throughout our entire community. It’s a special heartfelt show and tribute that highlights how much one shop and man can make a difference.

    21: Ride with Our Tribe

    21: Ride with Our Tribe

One of the best ways to see and explore a city is by bike and there’s no better way to connect with the cycling community and get to know the local trails than by riding with a local club. At the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort, we are home to the Buffalo Lodge Bike Tribe and whether you’re a tourist, new to town or a longtime local, all are welcome to join our weekly, year-round rides. Find out more about one of the coolest bike clubs in the city in this edition of Pedal the Springs podcast. Meet our ride leaders and some of our tribe riders in this our 21st episode and the first with video.

It’s the heart of what we do here at the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort, connect cyclists with all of the magnificent places to ride and adventure in Colorado Springs. We’re “Your Basecamp for Adventure in the Pikes Peak Region.” Since our inception over seven years ago, we’ve been putting on free weekly community rides through our Buffalo Lodge Bike Tribe. Our regular weekly rides include our Saturday recreational intermediate to advanced road and feature over 10 incredible rotating destinations throughout Colorado Springs and our Monday Garden Gears and Buffalo Beers is a tour of Garden of the Gods Park, right in our back yard less that a mile away.

Most places you travel to, you would need to pay to book a bike tour of the area. At the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort you can ride for free with locals, get to know local trails and have the camaraderie of joining our team for a post ride gathering and drinks at the lodge after. Our first ride is free, then, just $20 a year gets you membership for unlimited rides throughout the year. Meet our team and leaders and find out more about the club how to join us in this episode of “Pedal the Springs”.

    20: Cycling with the Santas

There’s no better way to kick off the holiday season than with a big community bike ride full of cycling Santas! Whether you live in town or are looking for a great time to visit the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort, check out this episode of Pedal the Springs podcast to find out more about our Annual Cycling Santa & Chasing Santa 5k, coming up December 2, 2023 – and register at ChasingSanta.com. Listen to get a registration discount code.

It’s been an annual holiday tradition since the Buffalo Lodge became the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort 7 years ago. The first Saturday in December we trade in our kits for Santa Suits to ride a spread cheer through our community. The Cycling Santa benefits Christmas Unlimited and participants are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy to help kids less fortunate in our community.

The ride has something for every ability, from 6 to 10 miles to the 22 mile full route. The routes travel along the Pikes Peak Greenway and are all relatively flat. The long ride continues through downtown Colorado Springs and Old Colorado City to the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort for a big waffle breakfast and party before heading back to the start. In this episode of “Pedal the Springs” we talk with the event organizer, volunteers and participants for all of the exciting details about the event.

The Buffalo Lodge Rampart Rager powered by Criterium Bicycles, with the opportunity to ride out of your room to race start, is a great reason to visit Colorado Springs this Fall. If you’re looking for a super challenging gravel race that will push you to your limits, but with plenty of support like bottle handoffs and great aid stations, along with a super attractive prize purse and after party, check out this episode of Pedal the Springs.

Started in 2015, the Rampart Rager isn’t your typical gravel grinder with elevation gains starting at 3,000 to 8,000 feet of climbing and breathtaking views of Pikes Peak. Whether you are an amateur or a pro racer who wants to challenge yourself, tune into this lively podcast as Torie and friends drink great Colorado craft beer and moonshine and banter about this epic ride they created to showcase their passion for biking in Colorado Springs.
