    enApril 12, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • The Power of Human ConnectionEmbrace the value of genuine human connection through in-person conversations with individuals from diverse backgrounds and fields.

The importance of genuine human connection was emphasized in this podcast discussion. The host shared his passion for in-person conversations, especially with individuals from various backgrounds and fields, such as comedians, historians, and scientists. He expressed his desire to continue having these conversations, both technical and non-technical, to create meaningful connections. The podcast also featured sponsors, including Wine Access, Blinkist, Magic Spoon, and Indeed, which the host encouraged listeners to support. The host's willingness to sacrifice for the possibility of human connection was evident, as he only conducts podcasts in person. He also shared his love for wine and the atmosphere it creates, as well as his appreciation for learning new things through books and Blinkist. Overall, the discussion highlighted the value of human connection and the importance of continuing to explore new ideas and experiences.

    • Power's corrupting influence and hiring the right teamAbsolute power can lead to corruption, and hiring passionate, excellent team members is crucial for success.

Power can corrupt even the most well-intended individuals. This was a topic of discussion during the podcast episode with Giannis Papas, who shared stories about his friend Tim Dillon and the potential dangers of absolute power. Giannis jokingly suggested that if Tim Dillon were given power, he might execute those who didn't meet his food standards. The conversation also touched on the importance of hiring the right people when creating something special, whether it's a business or a podcast. Lex shared his experience of using Indeed for hiring and emphasized the significance of having a passionate and excellent team. Additionally, Magic Spoon, a cereal company, was introduced with a special offer for listeners and a 100% happiness guarantee.

    • The Dark Side of Power and WealthPower and wealth can reveal people's darker sides, but emotional survival and understanding impermanence can help prevent corruption and adapt to life's changes

Power and wealth can corrupt people, often revealing their darker sides. However, some individuals, like Joe Rogan, manage to remain grounded despite their influence. It's essential to construct systems that prevent corruption and be aware of our own potential darkness. The capitalist system can prioritize profit over beauty and permanence, but ultimately, nothing is permanent, including wealth, relationships, and even our own identities. Emotional survival is crucial, and accepting reality's ephemeral nature can help us be more flexible and adaptable. My father's wisdom, embodied in his values, taught me the importance of surviving emotionally and understanding the impermanence of life.

    • Living life on one's termsEmbrace your passions and desires, even if it means sacrificing material success, as feeling deeply connected to what you do is a valuable currency.

The speaker values following one's passions and desires, even if it means sacrificing material success. He learned this from his father, who lived life on his own terms despite smoking for 60 years and eventually dying from prostate cancer. The speaker believes that feeling deeply connected to what one is doing is a valuable currency, potentially worth more than money and fame. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of accepting and acknowledging one's mortality as a foundation for living a good and moral life. The fear of death, according to the speaker, drives much of human behavior and creativity. He suggests that the most honest response to death is to acknowledge and face the fear, rather than accepting or denying it.

    • The acceptance of death gives meaning to our livesEmbracing mortality motivates us to live fully and passionately, driving us to explore, travel, and learn before it's too late.

The acceptance of death, although instinctual, gives meaning to our lives. This fear, unique to humans, drives us to appreciate the finite nature of our existence and motivates us to experience all that life has to offer. Woody Allen's art, despite his personal controversies, serves as a reminder of the depth of our appreciation for life. The fear of death is not an animalistic response but a cognitive construct that challenges us to find meaning in the face of our mortality. If life were infinite, there would be no urgency or motivation to explore, travel, or learn. Instead, we might become complacent and lazy, putting off our dreams for an uncertain future. Embracing the reality of our mortality is what drives us to live fully and passionately.

    • The appeal of eternal life with endless women vs. the importance of relationships and intellectual stimulationWhile eternal life with an endless supply of women may initially seem appealing, the quality of relationships and intellectual stimulation ultimately matter more in eternity. Ethical considerations and meaningful connections are essential, even for immortals.

The concept of eternal life with an endless supply of women, as discussed, may seem appealing at first, but the quality of relationships and intellectual stimulation would ultimately matter more in eternity. The speaker also touched upon the idea that even immortals may get bored and seek out new experiences, potentially leading to taboo relationships or even turning to robots. Additionally, the speaker expressed concern about morality and consent, particularly regarding the treatment of animals and the potential development of artificial consciousnesses. Ultimately, the conversation highlighted the importance of ethical considerations and the value of meaningful connections in any existence, be it mortal or immortal.

    • The role of dogs in human evolution and their ethical significanceThe speaker advocates for empathy and understanding towards all beings, including dogs, horses, and advanced AI, drawing a parallel between their unique abilities and contributions to human survival.

The discussion around artificial intelligence and its capabilities raises ethical questions, particularly concerning emotions and suffering. The speaker draws a parallel between the protection we provide to animals, like dogs, and the potential need to protect advanced AI. Dogs, the speaker emphasizes, have played a significant role in human evolution and deserve our protection due to their unique abilities and contributions. The speaker expresses a deep connection with dogs and views them as partners in survival. The speaker also touches upon the idea that psychopaths, in a metaphorical sense, might be considered "robots," but this term should not be used derogatorily. The speaker advocates for empathy and understanding towards all beings, including dogs, horses, and even advanced AI. The speaker's passion for animals and their role in human history adds depth to the conversation about the ethical implications of AI.

    • Power and its corrupting influencePower can amplify corrupt tendencies, but empathy and feeling play a crucial role in preventing corruption.

While robots can be helpful, it's humans who pose the greatest danger. From cats keeping rodents at bay to dogs' exceptional sense of smell and intelligence, animals have contributed to human civilization in various ways. However, the discussion also touched upon the darker side of power and leadership. Power may not necessarily corrupt, but it can amplify the corrupt tendencies in individuals, as seen in leaders like Hitler, Stalin, and Putin. The debate between the effectiveness of dictatorships and democracies continues, with each system having its pros and cons. Ultimately, it seems that the capacity for empathy and feeling plays a crucial role in whether power corrupts an individual or not.

    • People who hide their true nature can be intriguing and dangerousIntelligent, cunning beings like hyenas and humans who conceal their intentions can be fascinating but also pose a threat

People who hide their true nature, whether they are psychopaths or just trying to hide their intentions, often do so by pretending to be the opposite. This was discussed in relation to Ted Bundy and the current trend of people pretending to be "woke." Hyenas, with their intelligence, cunning, and brutality, were described as fascinating because of their dishonesty and self-reliance. The speaker also noted the unique characteristics of hyenas, such as their matriarchal society and the women's pseudo penises. Overall, the conversation touched on the idea that those who are able to hide their true intentions or nature can often get away with things, and that this ability can be both intriguing and dangerous.

    • Exploring the Complexities of Nature and HumanityThe speaker reflects on the emotional connections to father-son themes and the beauty and brutality of nature, drawing parallels between nature documentaries and mafia movies, and highlighting the courage and defiance of the Greek people in history.

The natural world and human experiences, such as those depicted in movies and history, can be both beautiful and brutal. The speaker shares his emotional connection to father-son themes and the sadness they evoke, while also acknowledging the harsh realities of nature and the violence that exists within it. He draws parallels between the portrayal of predators in nature documentaries and the glorification of violence in mafia movies, encouraging a more nuanced understanding of these complex topics. The speaker's personal connection to Greek history and the Battle of Crete highlights the enduring courage and defiance of the Greek people, even in the face of adversity. Overall, this conversation underscores the importance of acknowledging the complexities of life and history, and the emotional connections that can be drawn from them.

    • The Battle of Crete: First Aerial Invasion and Greek ResistanceThe Battle of Crete marked the first aerial invasion and significant German defeat in WWII, delaying Hitler's invasion of Russia and shaping the outcome of the war through Greek cultural values of honor, loyalty, and friendship.

The Battle of Crete in 1941 was a pivotal moment in history, marking the first aerial invasion and the first significant defeat for the Germans in World War II. My interlocutor's mother, a human rights lawyer, lived through the Nazi occupation of Greece as a child, and her hatred towards Germans never subsided. The Greeks, known for their fierce spirit, united against the larger and more equipped Italian army, and when Germany entered the scene, they put up a strong resistance. This resistance delayed Hitler's invasion of Russia, which ultimately contributed to the downfall of the Nazi regime. The Battle of Crete is a testament to the enduring Greek cultural values of honor, loyalty, and friendship, and the psychological impact of the early German defeat is believed to have had a significant influence on the outcome of the war.

    • The Complexities of Historical Narratives: The Battle of CreteThe Battle of Crete during WWII, a turning point militarily, is often overlooked due to political and ideological differences, highlighting the importance of considering multiple perspectives and the complexity of historical narratives.

History is complex and often incomplete, shaped by the perspectives of the victors. The Battle of Crete during World War II is an example of a significant event that has been overlooked in certain narratives due to political and ideological differences. From a military strategy perspective, the aerial attack on Crete could have been a turning point in the war, but it is often overshadowed by the larger narratives of the Soviet and American contributions. Additionally, the reality of war is brutal and chaotic, with luck playing a significant role. The stories of war are often written by the victors, and it's essential to consider the perspective of those who experienced the conflict firsthand. The Battle of Crete is just one example of the many untold stories and complexities that exist within historical narratives.

    • Appreciating the complexities of human historyHistory is filled with progress and innovation, shaping our world through the connection of people and ideas, even in seemingly ordinary moments.

History is complex and multifaceted, with both positive and negative aspects. We tend to focus on the negative because it's more exciting, but it's important to remember that progress and innovation have always been a part of human history, even in seemingly ordinary moments. Empires and civilizations may rise and fall, but the ideas and concepts they leave behind continue to shape our world. The connection between people, whether it's through language, shared experiences, or chemistry, can lead to unique and meaningful creations. And just like relationships, some endings are sad but necessary, paving the way for new beginnings.

    • Exploring history with a conversational twistThe 'History Hyenas' podcast, inspired by Dan Carlin's 'Hardcore History', offered a unique blend of history, humor, and extensive research, leaving a lasting impact on listeners with its rhythmic and musical storytelling.

The podcast "History Hyenas" with its unique chemistry between the hosts, fast-paced style, and deep research, created a classic show that people can revisit and appreciate. The hosts, who were inspired by Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History," but aimed for a more conversational and less academic approach, became good friends and attracted a fanbase that appreciated their "hang with history" style. The podcast's end was described as tragic but special, like a favorite TV show that ended too soon. The hosts' research was extensive, often delving deep into Wikipedia articles, and their episodes ranged from lighthearted to dense, offering a mix of history and humor. The hosts saw Dan Carlin as an inspiration, but their podcast was more about exploring human nature through historical events. Overall, "History Hyenas" left a lasting impact on its listeners with its rhythmic and musical storytelling.

    • Podcasts inspire and educate through passion and storytellingPodcasts offer a refreshing alternative to traditional education and the mainstream press, inspiring curiosity and motivating listeners to learn more through passionate storytelling.

Podcasts, like Dan Carlin's, can inspire and educate people in a powerful way, even if they are not historically accurate. The speakers' passion and storytelling can ignite curiosity and motivate listeners to learn more on their own. The authenticity and accessibility of podcasts offer a refreshing alternative to traditional education and the mainstream press. Bernie Madoff, a notorious con artist, serves as an example of how even a sophisticated scam can captivate audiences and inspire further investigation. The podcast medium, pioneered by hosts like Joe Rogan, provides a platform for intellectual discussions and encourages critical thinking. Despite its imperfections, it offers a valuable contribution to public education and the pursuit of knowledge.

    • The power of charm and manipulation in building networksCharismatic individuals can use flattery and funding to manipulate egos and build influential networks, often exploiting the desire to be heard and valued.

Charisma and manipulation played a significant role in Jeffrey Epstein's ability to amass a network of brilliant minds and influential figures. Epstein's exclusive approach and charm allowed him to convince outsiders in the scientific community, who often felt undervalued in academia, that their ideas mattered. By flattering their egos and providing funding, Epstein built a powerful network that included Bill Gates and political figures. People's desire to be flattered and heard plays to our ego, and charismatic individuals like Epstein, who are not burdened by empathy or emotions, can use this against us. It's a reminder of the power of charm and manipulation in influencing people and building networks.

    • The Power of Charisma and ManipulationBe aware of the impact of charisma on trust and beliefs, and critically evaluate conspiracy theories with an open-minded perspective.

Charisma and personality can have a profound impact on people, potentially leading them to trust and believe in things that may not be true. This was evident in the rise of figures like Hitler, who used his charm and persuasive abilities to gain the trust of many, despite the horrific actions and beliefs he espoused. This phenomenon is not unique to historical figures, and it's important to be aware of the power of charisma and the potential for manipulation in our own lives. Additionally, there are various conspiracy theories that persist throughout history, and while some may be rooted in truth, others may be based on misinformation or fear. It's essential to approach these theories with a critical and open-minded perspective, considering the motivations behind them and the evidence that supports or refutes them. Ultimately, it's crucial to be informed, question authority, and seek out the truth in all things.

    • The importance of transparency and honesty in politicsTransparent and honest leaders reduce the spread of conspiracy theories and help New York thrive. Frustration with current lack of capitalistic thinking and honesty in politics, admiration for Andrew Yang's honesty and data-driven approach.

Transparency and honesty from those in power can help reduce the spread of conspiracy theories. The speaker believes that people are more likely to detect dishonesty in the modern age due to the prevalence of the internet and social media. However, they also acknowledge that people can believe crazy things as well. The speaker expresses their frustration with the lack of capitalistic thinking and honesty in New York politics, using the Amazon HQ2 rejection as an example. They believe that New York, as the most important city in the country, needs a strong, business-focused leader to thrive. They admire Andrew Yang for his honesty and data-driven approach, and appreciate how he provides valuable information through his podcast. Overall, the speaker values transparency and realism in politics and leadership.

    • Having honest conversations with loved ones through podcastsPodcasts can facilitate deeper connections and unexpected insights during conversations with loved ones, despite differing views. The format allows for focused, distraction-free communication and can lead to productive and respectful discussions on various topics, including social issues and personal growth.

Having difficult conversations with loved ones, especially when recorded for a podcast, can lead to unexpected insights and deeper connections. The speaker, Angie Yang, shared her experience of interviewing her father and the surprising revelations that came up during their conversation. The podcast format allowed them to focus on each other without distractions and led to a more honest and meaningful conversation. Angie also mentioned the shocking cost of supporting one person in prison in New York, which sparked a conversation about the role of capitalism and government in addressing social issues. Despite their differing views, they were able to have a respectful and productive conversation, highlighting the potential of podcasts as a platform for open dialogue and understanding. Additionally, Angie reflected on the idea that nothing is ever enough in life and the importance of striving for progress and growth, whether in creating technology or raising children. Overall, the conversation underscored the power of authentic and intentional communication, especially in challenging situations.

    • Balancing healthcare and capitalismThe healthcare system in capitalism presents unique challenges, requiring a balance between profit and the human need for essential services. Creative solutions include regulating freedoms and subsidizing healthy choices.

The healthcare system, specifically in the context of capitalism, presents unique challenges. While the marketplace can be effective in some areas, it becomes complicated when it comes to providing essential services like healthcare. The Hippocratic oath, which emphasizes the importance of helping people, conflicts with the marketplace's profit-driven model. Additionally, there are issues like the affordability of healthy options and the burden of chronic conditions on the system. The speaker suggests creative solutions like regulating freedoms and subsidizing healthy choices, but acknowledges the need for a balance between socialism and capitalism. History, particularly the Elizabethan era and Queen Elizabeth's long reign, provides examples of successful periods where both elements were in play. Ultimately, finding the right balance between progress and the human need for more is essential.

    • Queen Elizabeth I's Masterful Rule and PropagandaQueen Elizabeth I, unmarried and childless, maintained power through propaganda and alliances, demonstrating the importance of manipulating perception and maintaining power in leadership.

Queen Elizabeth I, despite being unmarried and childless, was a masterful ruler who used various tactics, including propaganda and alliances, to maintain her power and build a prosperous empire. Her ability to manipulate public perception and maintain a strong image, even amidst the horrors and controversies of her reign, is a testament to her political acumen. Whether leading by love or fear, the means of effective leadership may change over time, but the importance of manipulating perception and maintaining power remains a constant. Queen Elizabeth I's success as a leader, despite her unconventional personal life, demonstrates the complexities and nuances of historical figures and the importance of examining their actions beyond the surface.

    • Embrace your passions and be true to yourselfDiscovering and following your passions, fueled by love and self-acceptance, leads to a fulfilling life.

Following your authentic self and taking action based on love are essential for a fulfilling life. The speaker shares how they discovered their passion for comedy and robotics, despite societal expectations and personal doubts. They emphasize that love, in the form of actions towards others and oneself, is the true currency of life. The speaker also reflects on their past experiences of dishonesty and anxiety, but ultimately found solace and purpose in pursuing their passions. In essence, the speaker encourages listeners to be doggedly themselves and embrace the journey of discovery and growth.

    • Valuing People EquallyPrince admired countries where everyone is valued equally, regardless of wealth or job. He found some famous people to be disappointing, but appreciated unique individuals in regular jobs. The pursuit of fame can be harmful, and real value comes from within.

The value of a person is not determined by their wealth, fame, or job. Prince made this observation and expressed his admiration for countries where everyone is valued equally, regardless of their profession or possessions. He also shared his disappointment with some famous and wealthy individuals who put on public facades, hiding their true selves. Contrarily, he found some of the most fascinating and interesting people in regular jobs. The pursuit of fame can be likened to a drug, and comedians, in particular, can be harsh and horrible people. Giannis, the guest on the podcast, was appreciated for his work and his unique chemistry. The conversation ended with a reminder that revolutions drive history forward and a thank you to the listeners and sponsors.

    #155: Reclaiming Conversation

More and more today, we're communicating with the people in our lives through screens. While this has greatly improved efficiency, there are some drawbacks that have come with the decline in face-to-face conversation. My guest today, Sherry Turkle, has written a book (Reclaiming Conversation) about what we're missing when we don't engage with people in face-to-face conversation. In today's show we talk about what we can do to reclaim conversation with the people in our lives, and there are a lot of actionable tips that you can implement right away.

Teach For America: Wendy Kopp (2017)

Teach For America: Wendy Kopp (2017)
In 1989, college senior Wendy Kopp was trying to figure out how to improve public education in the US. For her senior thesis, she proposed creating a national teaching corps that would recruit recent college grads to teach in needy schools. One year later, she launched the nonprofit, Teach for America. Today, TFA has close to 60,000 alumni and continues to place thousands of teachers across the country. PLUS in our postscript "How You Built That," we check back with 19-year-old CEO Abby Kircher who turned a peanut butter obsession into Abby's Better Nut Butter. N4L 014: "What Motivates Me" by Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton

N4L 014: "What Motivates Me" by Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton

Adrian Gostick, co-author of What Motivates Me: Put Your Passions to Work, has collected data from more than 850K people to find out what makes them happy at work. It turns out the key to workplace happiness is not doing something you're good at. And it's not working for a thriving company, either. Gostick's research shows that the most energized employees find work that motivates them personally.

    Just three takeaways:

    1. Happiness at work for U.S. employees is at "an all-time low." A whopping 87 percent of the world's workers are either not full engaged or plain disengaged.
    2. Each person has his/her unique combination of 23 different workplace motivators. Knowing these can give us language to sculpt our current job into one we love.
    3. The strongest teams include workers from all five "Identities." Read about these in the "Identity Reference Guide": Achievers, Builders, Caregivers, Reward-Driven, Thinkers.

We Cannot Heal Alone with Rabbi Sharon Brous

We Cannot Heal Alone with Rabbi Sharon Brous

Loneliness is now an epidemic, with devastating impacts on our health. How can we rekindle the deep human connection we need now more than ever?

For Rabbi Sharon Brous, this question is the focus of her work. Considered one of the most influential rabbis in the U.S., she's founded her own congregation and has led multiple White House faith events. In her new book, The Amen Effect, Sharon explores how grief and heartbreak can be gateways to truly seeing each other.

Sharon and I talk about what it means to be present to someone else's pain and how a 2,000-year old ritual taught her the meaning of healing together.

    This...is A Bit of Optimism.
