    • Embracing the uncool or 'cheugy' in 2024In 2024, people are seeking joy in uncool or 'cheugy' things, from fashion and decor to food and tech. Brands like Squarespace, Haagen Dazs, and Walmart cater to this trend, offering quality products and affordable options.

Embracing the uncool or "cheugy" can be a refreshing trend in 2024. According to Emma, people are tired of everything having to be perfectly aesthetic and vintage, and sometimes we just want to indulge in things that bring us joy, even if they're considered out of style. This can apply to various aspects of life, from fashion and home decor to food and technology. Squarespace emphasizes the importance of having a good website to effectively sell products or brands, making the online shopping experience seamless for customers. Haagen Dazs encourages treating yourself with their new dulce de leche ice cream bars, while Walmart offers affordable options for refreshing your wardrobe, home, or beauty routine. Stay tuned for Emma's upcoming series on what else is expected to be in and out in 2024.

    • Appreciating the simple joys in lifeEmbrace things that bring joy, even if they're considered uncool. Use the 5-second rule for certain foods with caution.

It's important to embrace the things that bring us joy, even if they're considered "uncool" or "cheugy" by society. The speaker shares her love for her Stanley Cups and UGG boots, despite their perceived uncoolness. She encourages everyone to enjoy small things that make them happy, even if they're not trendy. Another takeaway is the 5-second rule with food. The speaker explains that certain foods, like almonds and popcorn, can be safely eaten if they've fallen on the floor for a short period of time. She advises using common sense when applying the rule and not picking up food from unsanitary places. Overall, the speaker encourages listeners to appreciate the simple joys in life and not be too concerned with societal norms.

    • Prioritizing Good Habits and High-Quality ActivitiesIncorporating good habits and high-quality activities can improve life, from choosing nutritious snacks to consuming uplifting entertainment and reading for knowledge and relaxation.

Prioritizing good habits and high-quality activities can significantly improve your life. The speaker shares her personal experiences with eating popcorn in bed as a harmless habit, and the importance of consuming high-quality entertainment to uplift your mind and reduce anxiety. She also emphasizes the value of reading as a source of knowledge, relaxation, and mental stimulation, and encourages setting goals to incorporate it into daily life. Ultimately, the speaker advocates for making intentional choices to enhance personal growth and well-being.

    • Appreciating the beauty of simplicityThe speaker values simple activities and appearances, finding joy in underrated pleasures like badminton and natural hair growth, and cherishes the connection to nature through growing fresh herbs.

The speaker values simplicity and naturalness in activities and appearances. They find joy in underrated activities like badminton and growing out natural hair, as opposed to following trends. They believe that these simple pleasures offer instant gratification and require minimal effort, making them ideal for busy individuals. Additionally, they appreciate the connection to nature and the sense of nurturing and responsibility that comes with growing fresh herbs. These preferences reflect a desire to return to basics and enjoy the simple things in life.

    • Finding joy through knowledge and experiencesExperience joy by learning new things and enjoying the tangible results, while also finding simple ways to bring happiness to everyday life and prioritizing mental health.

Finding joy and satisfaction comes from both researching new things and experiencing the tangible results of that knowledge, such as cooking with fresh herbs from a garden or going on spontaneous weekend road trips. However, it's important to remember that not everyone has the means or resources to maintain a garden or take extravagant trips. The key is finding what works for you and bringing joy to your everyday life in simple ways. Additionally, being mindful of your social battery and taking care of your mental health through therapy can help you build a fulfilling social life and maintain a balanced sense of well-being.

    • Embracing Simplicity and Humor in Everyday LifeWeekend getaways don't need to be extravagant, humor in business can boost productivity, outfit reusing saves time and money, and asking for extra sauce enhances food enjoyment.

Breaking free from traditional norms and adding a touch of humor, simplicity, and reusing items can bring ease, productivity, and comfort in various aspects of life. Firstly, weekend getaways don't have to be extravagant or complicated. Thinking outside the box and embracing simplicity can lead to enjoyable experiences without the added stress of planning a grand trip. Secondly, incorporating humor in business settings can disarm individuals, create a more comfortable environment, and boost productivity. The business facade is out, and being silly in professional environments is in. Thirdly, the societal pressure of always having a new outfit for every event is unsustainable. Outfit reusing is the new trend, allowing individuals to save time, money, and reduce waste. Lastly, asking for extra sauce or dressing on the side is a simple yet impactful way to enhance the taste and enjoyment of food. Embracing these small changes can lead to significant improvements in various aspects of life.

    • The Value of Extra Sauce and MassagesPeople appreciate extra sauce and consider it a worthwhile investment for various uses. Regular massages offer numerous benefits, and unexpected places can provide great experiences.

Individuals value having enough sauce with their meals and believe that ordering extra is a worthwhile investment due to its potential uses. Another takeaway is the importance of getting regular massages for various reasons and the potential for finding great experiences at unexpected places. Despite one negative experience, the speaker advocates for the overall benefits of massages and encourages everyone to prioritize them. Lastly, the speaker promotes the affordability and variety of options at Walmart for refreshing one's wardrobe, home, or beauty routine during the spring season.

    • Upgrade home, express self, speak politely, embrace communityUpgrade your home with Squarespace, express yourself through fashion, speak politely to improve relationships, and embrace community experiences for personal growth

Upgrading your home decor and expressing yourself through fashion are important aspects of personal growth. When it comes to shopping for new items, having a user-friendly website is crucial for making a purchase. Squarespace offers an all-in-one platform for entrepreneurs to create a professional website and sell their products seamlessly. Speaking up politely is also essential in various situations, from correcting mistakes to standing up for oneself. Additionally, embracing community experiences, such as spending time at cafes and forming friendships before dating, can bring joy and inspiration into our lives. So, upgrade your home, express yourself, speak up politely, and embrace community to enhance your overall well-being.

    • Building a friendship before loveBuilding a strong friendship before entering a romantic relationship is essential for a long-term connection. Understand each other's interests, compatibility, and enjoy company beyond physical attraction.

Building a strong friendship before entering a romantic relationship is essential for a long-term connection. The speaker shares her personal experience and her father's advice about the importance of getting to know someone as a friend first. This approach allows individuals to fully understand if they have mutual interests, compatibility, and enjoy each other's company beyond physical attraction. The speaker also shares her personal preferences for maroon nail polish and onion rings, which she finds appealing and dynamic. Overall, the key takeaway is that taking the time to build a strong foundation of friendship is crucial for a successful and long-lasting romantic relationship.

    • Trends for 2024: Feta Cheese, Laser Hair Removal, Walking After Dinner, Orange Warm Lighting, and Relaxing Ambient MusicThe speaker predicts feta cheese, laser hair removal, walking after dinner, orange warm lighting, and relaxing ambient music to be popular trends in 2024 based on her personal experiences and preferences.

According to the speaker, feta cheese, laser hair removal, going for walks after dinner, orange warm cozy lighting, and relaxing ambient music are trends that are in for 2024 based on her personal experiences and preferences. She finds feta cheese tangy, delicious, fun, and versatile, and believes laser hair removal offers convenience. Walking after dinner helps her digest and cool down after meals. Orange warm lighting creates a cozy atmosphere in her home. Relaxing ambient music sets a chill mood and enhances her daily activities without being distracting. Swimming in natural bodies of water is a trend she plans to fully embrace this year for its refreshing and grounding effects.

    • Self-care, authenticity, and intellectual stimulation in 2024In 2024, focusing on self-care, being authentic, and seeking intellectual stimulation through music and natural environments will be popular trends.

In 2024, being in natural bodies of water and enjoying oneself will continue to be popular, as will music with intelligent and poetic lyrics. Additionally, living life authentically and doing what brings personal happiness will remain important trends. Emma Chamberlain also emphasized the significance of being true to oneself, standing up for oneself, and appreciating oneself. She expressed a preference for music that challenges her intellectually and spoke to her on a deeper level. In summary, the themes of self-care, authenticity, and intellectual stimulation are expected to dominate in 2024.

Ep. 161: The Decisions That Almost Derailed Mamma Chia's Mission

Ep. 161: The Decisions That Almost Derailed Mamma Chia's Mission

As Mamma Chia was sprinting to runaway success, an error in judgment nearly caused its demise.

Up until that point, the company’s star was on a steady rise. Within a year of its market debut in 2010, its innovative chia-based beverages were distributed in thousands of stores, including nationally at Whole Foods. A few months later, founder Janie Hoffman was highlighted in a widely-read New York Times article about growing consumer demand for chia. Mamma Chia has since evolved into a platform brand that also markets snacks and other foods and is one of the leading brands in the chia space.

But when the addition of several new hires threatened to upend the company itself, Hoffman who joined us for an interview included in this episode, was forced to reassess her approach while steering the brand through a potential crisis.

“We had gotten to a place where I thought we needed to get to that next step, and I valued experience over cultural fit and [the hires] were absolutely disastrous,” Hoffman said. “They really were. It’s a miracle the company survived it. That’s how damaging those hires were.”

As part of a wide-ranging conversation, Hoffman spoke about the origins of Mamma Chia and how she created the foundation for its rapid ascent. She also discussed the importance of a supportive professional network and shared a painful lesson about hiring for experience versus cultural fit. Janie also explained her belief that “you can’t teach attitude” and why everyday happiness starts with a joyful spirit.

    Show notes:

2:47: Interview: Janie Hoffman, Founder/CEO, Mamma Chia -- In an interview recorded at Mamma Chia headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif., Hoffman spoke about her personal experience with chia and how it led the brand’s creation. She also discussed how she evaluated the opportunity for Mamma Chia, why pre-launch market research was critical to her first meeting with Whole Foods and the brand’s early development, and how she attracted Honest Tea co-founder Seth Goldman as an investor and advisor. Later, she explained why hiring experienced professionals who were not fully aligned with the company’s mission caused very serious problems and how the current staffing process resulted in a new president of Mamma Chia. Finally, Hoffman discussed industry competition, why she’s turned down offers to sell the company and why meditation is key to her “spiritual hygiene.”

Brands in this episode: Mamma Chia, Honest Tea, Beyond Meat
