    21. Becoming a guide dog puppy raiser - what's involved

    21. Becoming a guide dog puppy raiser - what's involved

Welcome to another episode of the Pet Purpose Podcast, the show where my guests and I talk all things pet related… topics that help passionate pet parents take pet parenting to the next level or topics that are simply of interest for pet parents.

It is sometimes easy to take the sense of sight for granted, but for those people who are blind or for those with low vision, this can severely limit their independence and sense of freedom. Guide dogs are a fantastic way to help blind and low vision people get some of their freedom back. But, to raise and train a guide dog is no mean feat! There is a lot that’s involved in getting a guide dog ready to capably, safely and effectively help guide their vision impaired handler. One of the early steps in readying a guide dog for its handler is having them trained and socialised with the help of a puppy raiser family. This helps lay the groundwork and forms a foundation for the more advanced training later on in the guide dogs training journey.

Join myself Brett the Vet and special guest Alison Rubie, a guide dog puppy raiser, as we talk about what is involved in the raising of a guide dog puppy, what some of the responsibilities are, what some of the rewards are and of course what to do if you are interested in finding out more about becoming a guide dog puppy raiser yourself!

Pets are so important in our lives and they form part of the family for so many people, but not all forms of housing are pet friendly.
Certain parts of the residential sector place restrictions on pet ownership which means that not everyone is able to enjoy the benefits of pet ownership.

They also discuss what current or future pet owners should be aware of when looking for a place to rent or buy? What landlords should consider with respect to tenants and pets? Should there be a shift from blanket rulings to rulings tailored to individual pets and houses? How to champion for more pet friendly forms of housing and much more!

What are the benefits of reaching out to a neutral, third-party professional? How do children handle grief? What are some of the ways we can help someone who is dealing with the loss of a pet? What are some feelings that may arise when getting a new pet following the loss of an old pet?
Join Brett the Vet and special guest Fiona Koenig, a grief counsellor, as they discuss answers to these questions and more.
