    • The Influence of Online CultureThe future is moving online, and creativity and innovation can come from unexpected places in the digital world

The future is increasingly moving towards online experiences, as evidenced by the various mentions of getting mattresses, stamps, and shopping online during the podcast discussion. Additionally, creativity and innovation can come from unexpected places, such as a pornographic clip featuring a shout-out to the Wu Tang Clan and their unique member names during a climax. The clip's creator demonstrated a unique perspective and appreciation for the Wu Tang Clan by specifically mentioning lesser-known members, showcasing a deep fandom that may not be commonly expressed in such a manner. Overall, this episode highlights the growing influence of online culture and the potential for creative expression in unexpected places.

    • Appreciating the depth of hip hop musicRecognizing the significance of lyrics, beats, influences, and unique elements in classic hip hop songs deepens our appreciation for the genre.

The appreciation for classic hip hop music extends beyond just the lyrics and beats, but also includes recognizing the dedication and knowledge of the artists and their influences. This was highlighted in the discussion about Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back," where the original's message of celebrating different body types was noted, as well as the significance of the DJ scratching in the song. Additionally, the conversation touched upon the remix of Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" and the unexpected enjoyment of the fart sound effect in the song. Overall, the conversation showcased the depth of hip hop fandom and the importance of recognizing the various layers of meaning in the music.

    • The Power of the Internet to Amplify ContentThe internet can quickly turn an unexpected remix or edit into a viral sensation, sparking conversation and impacting popular culture, even if it's considered controversial or over-the-top.

The internet can quickly turn a simple music release into a viral sensation, even if it's an unexpected remix with added sound effects. In the case of Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" video, a group of creators added fart sounds to the video, resulting in the "Anaconda fart remix" which gained significant attention and views in a short amount of time. The remix, despite being considered gross or over-the-top by some, showcases the power of the internet to amplify content and spark conversation. However, the original creators faced backlash and the remix was eventually removed from some platforms. Despite this, the viral nature of the content had already made an impact. Additionally, the conversation around the remix led to discussions on topics such as freedom of expression, censorship, and the role of humor in popular culture.

    • Music evolution and the debate over originality and borrowingThe use of samples and borrowing in music is a complex issue, with some seeing it as a modern take and others as stealing, and the line between the two can be blurry.

Music evolution and influence is a complex issue. The song "Anaconda" by Nicki Minaj, which samples Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back," raises questions about originality and borrowing in music. While some argue that Minaj's version negates the original message, others see it as a modern take that's empowering and positive. However, the use of samples and borrowing in music is a common practice, and the line between borrowing and stealing can be blurry. The NPR TED Radio Hour podcast "What is Original?" explores this topic and sheds light on the history of music sampling and the nuances behind it. Ultimately, the conversation around originality in music is ongoing and nuanced, and it's important to consider the context and intent behind the art.

    • The Sexualization of Female Artists: A Critique of Nicki MinajThe speakers critique Nicki Minaj's explicit lyrics and focus on appealing to men for validation, while acknowledging her talent and success. They discuss a viral parody video of her song 'Anaconda' and find it to be a better role model for young girls than the original.

The discussion revolves around the perceived sexualization of female artists, specifically Nicki Minaj, in the music industry. The speakers critique the explicit nature of her lyrics and her apparent focus on appealing to men for validation. However, they also acknowledge her talent and success, questioning the need for such a focus on material wealth and sexuality. The conversation takes a turn when they discuss a viral parody video of one of Nicki Minaj's songs, "Anaconda," which was removed by the artist and her record label. The speakers find the situation ironic, given the explicit content in the original song. They also find the parody video to be brilliant and believe it could serve as a better role model for young girls than the original. Overall, the conversation touches on themes of sex, success, and the objectification of women in the entertainment industry.

    • Internet's unpredictable nature and limitations of controlDespite power and influence, entities can't always prevent the spread of internet content, leading to potential attention and interest amplification.

Power and influence don't always guarantee control over content on the internet. As demonstrated in the situation with Nicki Minaj and her attempt to remove a parody video, even large entities like record labels can't prevent the spread of content once it's been released. This David and Goliath scenario highlights the limitations of trying to suppress internet leaks and the potential for such efforts to generate even more attention and interest in the original content. Additionally, the conversation touched on the theme of humor and sensitivity, as seen in the discussion about Cosby's reaction to a comedy cartoon and the creation of Country Hip Hop dance lessons. Overall, these discussions underscore the complex and often unpredictable nature of internet culture and the balance between creative expression and sensitivity to various audiences.

    • Cargo Pants Bulge Debate: Authentic or Extra Fabric? The debate over cargo pants and shorts continues, with opinions divided on whether the bulge effect is authentic or just extra fabric. Personal preferences and fashion trends shape our perceptions of what's in or out.

The cargo pants and shorts debate continues, with differing opinions on what creates a "bulge" effect. Some argue it's an authentic bulge, while others claim it's just extra fabric. The speaker, Patrick, maintains that it's a fabric bulge and not a real one. He also shares a personal anecdote about enjoying country hip hop dancing in the past. The conversation also touches on the perception of fashion trends and how they evolve over time. The speaker expresses his discomfort with certain fashion trends, such as the one discussed in the cargo pants debate, and how they can be perceived as outdated or embarrassing. Ultimately, the debate highlights the subjective nature of fashion and personal preferences.

    • Discovering the joys of a massaging toiletA massaging toilet enhances bathroom experience and promotes better digestive health, while understanding different types of horse poop and adjusting to new environments can prevent travel-related diarrhea.

Having tried an Asian toilet with built-in water massager for the posterior region, the speaker found it to be a game-changer for achieving a satisfying bathroom experience. This toilet, with its adjustable water pressure and lady parts cleaning function, provides a sensation akin to a gentle massage, making it a desirable addition to one's daily routine. Additionally, the discussion touched upon the importance of understanding various types of horse poop and the potential for travelers to experience diarrhea due to changes in food and time zones. The speakers shared their personal experiences with diarrhea and the challenges it poses, emphasizing the importance of being mindful of diet and adjusting to new environments. Lastly, the conversation included light-hearted moments, such as sharing burping experiences and the ease with which the speaker belched during sleep. These moments added a humorous touch to the conversation and showcased the speakers' openness and willingness to engage in a candid discussion.

    • A fan's creative submission and the unexpected complicationsSpeakers admire fan's creativity but express apprehension due to complications and potential confrontation

The conversation between the speakers revolved around various topics including a potential embarrassing moment on set, the changing of seasons, and the overwhelming response to a fan-submitted song on their show. The speakers also touched upon the lengthy process taken by the fan to create the song and the unexpected complications that arose due to the fan's request for compensation. The speakers expressed awe and admiration for the fan's creativity and the impact of their work on the audience. Despite the excitement, they also expressed apprehension due to the fan's demanding behavior and potential confrontation. The conversation also included references to everyday experiences and pop culture references, adding to the conversational and lighthearted tone. Overall, the conversation showcased the speakers' genuine appreciation for their fans and the unique experiences that come with their work in the entertainment industry.

    • Speaker's determination and protection of their interestsThe speaker values respect and hustle, has faced legal issues over use of voice and likeness, and remains focused on their goals despite personal frustrations.

The speaker is a determined and protective individual who values respect and hustle. They have had legal issues regarding the use of their voice and likeness without compensation, and they expect those responsible to rectify the situation. The speaker also mentioned their love for dogs and their desire to get a new one. However, they expressed frustration over personal matters, such as rummaging through their partner's belongings and disregard for their rules regarding drinking and smoking in the house. Despite these issues, the speaker remains focused on their goals and will take necessary actions to protect themselves and their interests.

    • The speaker's contradictory feelings towards their dogThe speaker's relationship with their dog is filled with love, anger, and frustration. They express desires for control, manipulation, and acceptance.

The speaker's relationship with their dog, Theo, is complex and filled with contradictions. They express love and affection for Theo but also harbor anger and frustration towards him. The speaker's behavior towards Theo includes threats of violence, accusations of disrespect, and even attempts at manipulation. Despite this, the speaker also shows a desire for Theo to fit in with their family and relax into their new home. Additionally, the conversation reveals the speaker's preferences for certain breeds and their sexual desires. The conversation also touches on the speaker's possession of prescription pills and Theo's alleged theft of them. The conversation ends with the speaker expressing their frustration with Theo's alleged attempt to take legal action against them for using his name in a song. Overall, the conversation highlights the complexities and contradictions of the speaker's relationship with their pet.

    • Proper serving techniques in fast foodFollowing specific procedures and using correct filling methods for different beverages can enhance the customer experience in fast food establishments.

Proper serving techniques, even in fast food establishments like Wendy's, can significantly impact the customer experience. From filling cups with precise measurements to ensuring polite and attentive service, small details make a big difference. The speaker emphasizes the importance of following specific procedures, such as placing drinks on the left side of the tray and keeping a smile on your face, to create a positive interaction between servers and guests. Additionally, the use of ice and filling methods varies for different beverages. For soft drinks, keep foam to a minimum by filling halfway with ice and tilting the cup to keep the foam down. For lemonade and water, fill to a quarter inch from the top. For cold tea, fill the cup all the way up with ice and then add the tea. These techniques not only ensure a well-prepared drink but also contribute to a pleasant dining experience.

    • Finding Joy in Fast Food and Hip Hop DancingDespite challenges, find joy in unexpected places like fast food service and hip hop dancing, which require authenticity, dedication, and confidence.

Despite the challenges and criticisms, there's a unique charm to both the fast-paced world of fast food service and the seemingly awkward world of hip hop dancing. The speaker expresses empathy for those in the fast food industry, acknowledging its demands and occasional hiring of difficult employees. Similarly, they find joy in an unexpected source – an older white woman teaching hip hop dancing on YouTube. Though the video may be lacking in production value, the speaker appreciates the authenticity and the woman's passion for the art form. Both worlds, in their unique ways, require a certain posture, dedication, and confidence. The speaker's connection to these seemingly disparate worlds highlights the importance of embracing the quirks and imperfections in life and finding joy in unexpected places.

    • Embracing the spirit of hip hopHip hop goes beyond music and dance, it's an attitude and a way to express oneself. Embrace the spirit, connect with the music, and accept yourself and others.

Hip hop goes beyond just music or dance; it's an attitude and a way of expressing oneself. The speaker, a hip hop dance instructor, emphasizes that it's not just about physical appearance or following trends, but rather having the right attitude and feeling it from within. She shares her unique teaching style, connecting with her students by understanding their love for hip hop and accepting them for who they are. The instructor's passion for hip hop is evident in her classes, where she encourages students to embrace their individuality and connect with the music on a deeper level. The power of hip hop lies in its ability to bring people together and create a community, transcending cultural and societal norms.

S2 Ep4: Confidence in Creativity with Aloe Blacc, Andrew Dost, Problem, and Xzibit

    Confidence in Creativity

Being vulnerable is HARD. I have so much compassion for every artist that I’ve ever sat in a room with as they played me their new music…. “It’s not mixed!!!” is usually what everyone says before hitting play. It’s not the same exactly…. but I think it takes the same amount of courage to raise your hand and throw out an idea in a corporate environment or to innovate in brainstorming meetings.

At the recent Power Shift conference I curated a conversation about having “Confidence in Creativity” with two artist friends Andrew Dost & Xzibit. We discussed authenticity, social media, and imposter syndrome and then were joined by Aloe Blacc & Problem to dig even deeper.

From having #1 songs to touring the world to winning The Best New Artist Grammy they offered up many gems. Then I had to be vulnerable. About an hour before we taped this conversation I learned a good friend of mine had died. At the conference (on stage) I told people what I was going through and honored my friend. It was painful and I wondered if I should edit it out of the taping before releasing this episode of The Idea Fountain. I decided to keep the conversation in it’s entirety and share my story. Mental health is an important conversation and me pretending something horrible didn’t happen, or just posting pictures of me with artists, isn’t going to help someone. I hope this talk does. Whether you consider yourself a Blk Shp trying to find your inner artist… or you’re an artist trying to find confidence in creativity there is strength in community. I know I’m appreciative for all of you. Thanks for checking out the new episode!
