    • From Cybercriminal to Cybercrime Fighter: The Redemption Story of Brett JohnsonDespite a traumatic upbringing and a history of cybercrime, Brett Johnson has turned his life around and is now dedicated to helping others combat cybercrime. We all have the capacity for both good and bad, and it's up to us to choose the path of redemption.

Brett Johnson, a former cybercriminal and the founder of the first organized cybercrime community called Shadow Crew, shares his story of trauma, pain, redemption, and love with host Lex Fridman. Johnson's journey started when he was only 10 years old, growing up in Eastern Kentucky, where scams, hustles, and fraud were part of daily life. Despite his criminal past, Johnson now helps people understand and fight cybercrime. Fridman, in his podcast, aims to empathize with his guests while not overlooking the crimes they have committed. He emphasizes that each individual has the capacity to be both the criminal and the victim, and it is our responsibility to avoid these paths and define the path to redemption.

    • Growing up with a Fraudster Mother: The Devastating Effects of Domestic ViolenceDomestic violence and childhood trauma can have a lasting impact on individuals, leading them down a dangerous path. It's important to recognize the signs and seek help to break the cycle of abuse.

In this section, Brett Johnson recounts his childhood experiences of growing up with a mother who was a fraudster and abusive towards her husband. Johnson's father was a good man, but he put up with his wife's behavior because he was afraid of losing her. Johnson and his sister were caught in the middle of their parents' dysfunctional relationship and often witnessed violent incidents. As a child, Johnson did not find this life exciting, but rather a means to an end. It was only later when he entered the world of cybercrime that he found excitement. Johnson's mother's motivations for fraud were likely financial, as she did not want to work as a nurse. She committed fraud against individuals and businesses, selling over-the-counter capsules filled with other substances. Overall, this section sheds light on the devastating effects of domestic violence and childhood trauma.

    • How Childhood Trauma Can Influence Adult ChoicesChildhood experiences can shape an individual's choices later in life. Meeting good, decent people can have a positive impact and help break the cycle of negative behavior.

Brett Johnson grew up in a family where rules were stringent and stealing food was a common practice. His mother and grandmother would steal, while Brett and his sister would distract the security. They lived in a world where there were no decent people around. However, when Brett was 16, he met his first decent person, a high school teacher. Brett believes that his experiences as a child influenced his choices as an adult, although he takes responsibility for his actions now. Meeting decent people can help turn the tide for individuals who have had difficult childhoods.

    • The Long-Term Effects of Childhood Trauma and the Importance of Seeking SupportChildhood trauma can have long-lasting impacts on an individual's mental health and behavior. It's essential to seek help and support to overcome these challenges and prevent further harm to oneself and others.

Brett Johnson experienced abuse and trauma from a young age, which continued when he was 15 years old and his mother was dating a man who was also abusive. He planned to go live with his father in Florida but found out his father was getting married and wouldn't be taking him in. This led to a moment of intense anger and violence towards a woman in an elevator, which resulted in his arrest and imprisonment. Despite the psychological evaluation and recommendation for counseling, Brett's mother refused to allow him to receive help. He became a pariah in his community and faced rejection from multiple schools. This highlights the long-term impact of childhood trauma and the importance of seeking help and support when needed.

    • The Importance of Mentorship in Shaping LivesHaving a supportive mentor or teacher can make a powerful impact in guiding an individual's life choices towards success, while lack of support can have negative consequences.

Brett Johnson's homeroom teacher became a surrogate mother to him and encouraged him to pursue theater along with academics. He excelled in both, becoming one of the top academic team guys in his state and achieving the remarkable feat of winning best actor and actress in the state his senior year. However, Johnson turned down numerous scholarships out of fear of leaving home, and this setback led him down a dark path of scams and crimes. His family was involved in various illegal activities, including coal mining without permits. Sometimes the support and guidance of a mentor or teacher can be instrumental in shaping the direction of someone's life.

    • The Realities of Illegal Coal MiningMining for coal illegally can result in profit, but involves risks such as avoiding inspectors and paying off potential whistleblowers. Despite the difficult circumstances, love can still exist in families involved in illegal activities.

Mining for coal involves a costly and lengthy permitting process, as well as expensive reclamation efforts post-mining to ensure environmental safety. However, an illegal operation with only a few people can turn a profit by selling to other illegal buyers. The sale price is determined by the coal's British thermal unit, which measures its burning qualities. To operate illegally, miners must avoid inspectors and pay off landowners and other potential whistleblowers. Mining is a culture that can be passed down in families, alongside other illegal activities such as charity and insurance fraud. Despite a tough upbringing filled with abuse, the speaker's parents still hold love for each other and their children.

    • Brett Johnson Learns to Let Go and Live Without RegretsAccepting our fate and taking responsibility for our own lives can help us live without regrets, even in difficult situations like the loss of a loved one.

Brett Johnson's father is dying and has chosen not to undergo surgery. He has accepted his fate and is ready to go. Brett has come to understand his father's decision and has learned to accept it. Growing up in an abusive environment, Brett learned to take responsibility for his own life and not to expect anyone to come to his rescue. Although he loves his mother, he has drawn a boundary with her. He wants her to accept responsibility for her mistakes and acknowledge the abuse she inflicted on others. Brett's father's approach to death teaches us to accept our fate and live life without regrets.

    • The Dark World of Cyber Crime: Insights from a Former CriminalBrett Johnson's interview with his personal experiences highlight the importance of understanding the roots of cybercrime, specifically social engineering. Awareness of the psychological aspects involved can aid prevention efforts.

Brett Johnson, a former cyber criminal, admits to not caring about his victims while committing crimes for his own benefit. Johnson was a social engineer who used his skills to manipulate people into giving him what he wanted. He became a social engineer as a child in order to survive in his environment. A woman once shared with him that abused children often use control mechanisms similar to what he did, which made him realize that he was not alone in his behavior. Ultimately, he acknowledges that cyber criminals often start as social engineers who learned these skills as children and later turned to victimizing others.

    • Building Trust and Manipulation - The Art of Social Engineering in CybercrimeCybercriminals use a combination of technology and psychological tactics to gain a victim's trust and achieve their goals. Victims should be cautious and avoid blindly trusting information, especially if it feeds into their desired beliefs or motivations.

Establishing trust with a victim is a key element to cybercrime, and cybercriminals do this through a combination of technology tools and social engineering. The social engineer must empathize with their victim and understand their motivations to effectively manipulate them. However, cybercriminals must also be able to detach themselves from the pain they may cause the victim. Finding a balance between trusting and being cautious on the internet is challenging, but social engineering often focuses on feeding into what the victim wants to believe. Effective social engineering requires listening to and understanding the victim, but ultimately dismissing that empathy to achieve their goals.

    • Phishing Scams: How to Spot Them and Protect Your InformationPhishing scams are becoming more sophisticated and targeted. Stay vigilant and report suspicious emails or messages to prevent financial loss and reputation damage.

The discussion highlights the dangers of phishing attacks, where scammers try to obtain sensitive information such as login credentials, social security numbers, and account details. While phishing used to be easy to spot due to poor language and formatting, scammers now pay attention to detail and use personalized messages that appear genuine. Business email compromise is another type of phishing attack that targets specific individuals, such as CEOs or payroll departments, through careful research. These attacks can cause financial loss and damage to reputations. It is important to remain vigilant and report suspicious emails or messages to prevent falling victim to phishing scams.

    • The Different Facets of CybercrimeCybercriminals may use simple methods to attack, but their social engineering tactics are often sophisticated. While companies have a responsibility to secure their systems, the criminals bear full responsibility for their illegal actions.

Cybercrime is not always sophisticated - 90% of attacks use known exploits. However, the social engineering aspect of cybercrime is often very sophisticated, relying on the establishment of trust to defraud the victim. Spearphishing and unauthorized access are illegal, but charges and punishments vary based on the victim and any monetary loss incurred. Companies like SolarWinds, which provided a backbone of security for thousands of companies, were incredibly vulnerable to attacks, with a Russian group able to view every aspect of every client's data. While companies like SolarWinds are culpable for their negligence, the responsibility for the crime lies solely with the criminals who perpetrate it.

    • The SolarWinds Attack and the Threat of Misinformation to our Trust in InformationThe SolarWinds attack is a wake-up call to the potential destruction of cybercrime and the danger of misinformation. Consensus may be a better approach for creating stability in a world where truth is at risk.

The SolarWinds attack is catastrophic as it allows attackers to go through the source code of platforms like Microsoft Outlook and find zero-day vulnerabilities. The potential destruction from this attack is huge, and it's just the beginning. Nation states like Russia, China, North Korea, and others are involved in cybercrime, with different motives. But what's even more terrifying is the perception of truth being more important than the truth itself. With deep fakes, fake news, and other forms of misinformation, our ability to trust is at risk. But maybe we should aim for a consensus instead of absolute truth, creating stable islands of agreement for a better quality of life.

    • The Rise and Fall of Shadow Crew: A Criminal's JourneyBrett Johnson's story highlights how lack of opportunity and positive role models can lead to a life of crime. Recognize the consequences of your actions, no matter how small they may seem.

In this dialogue, Brett Johnson shares the story of how he built Shadow Crew, the precursor to today's dark net and dark net markets. He also talks about his criminal background and how he faked a car accident to get money for his marriage. Johnson also shares how he got involved with scams and fraud schemes, revealing the criminal mindset that he learned from his family. Brett Johnson's personal experience shows how easy it is to fall into a life of crime if you don't have other opportunities or positive role models in your life. It also demonstrates the importance of recognizing the consequences of your actions, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem at the time.

    • The Cautionary Tale of Brett Johnson's Criminal ActivitiesBrett Johnson's journey into criminal activities for material gain started with small frauds but eventually led to disastrous consequences. It shows how dangerous and risky it is to engage in criminal activities for any reason.

Brett Johnson, in his younger years, engaged in various criminal activities to fund his lifestyle and show love to his partner through extravagant gifts. He started with small frauds like stealing phone lists to set up his own telemarketing group and moved onto low-level scams like paying for eBay purchases with bad checks. He eventually stumbled upon the lucrative world of Beanie Babies and tried to recreate the Royal Blue Elephant, Peanut, by dying a gray elephant blue, which turned out to be a disaster. Johnson's story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of getting caught up in criminal activities for the sake of material gain.

    • Lesson 1 of Cybercrime: Outsmarting Victims with Social Engineering TacticsCybercriminals use delaying tactics and prey on victims' vulnerabilities. Victims may feel helpless and embarrassed to report crime. Breaking rules can cause harm to others. Cybercriminals use entrepreneurial skills to devise undetected crimes.

This section highlights the first lesson of cybercrime: delaying a victim long enough can exhaust them and make them give up on pursuing justice. Cybercriminals often rely on social engineering tactics to manipulate victims, and victims may feel embarrassed or unsure where to report cybercrime. The excerpt also acknowledges the ethical considerations of cybercrime, as breaking rules and laws can contribute to the suffering of others. Finally, the section highlights the entrepreneurial spirit and problem-solving skills of cybercriminals, who often work alone to figure out how to commit crimes and evade detection.

    • The Importance of Trial and Error in Cybercrime.Criminals in the cybercrime world must learn to solve problems on their own through trial and error. The first step is identity theft, which allows them to commit crimes under someone else's name. However, criminals must be cautious to avoid being caught, leading to the purchase of risky fake IDs.

Trial and error is important in cybercrime, where criminals must solve problems on their own. The first principle taught in shadow crew is that all crimes should begin with identity theft, as it allows criminals to commit crimes under someone else's name. The section also highlights the emergence of a new industry for criminals, such as the piracy of satellite signals in Canada. Criminals adapted quickly to make money, with PayPal as a popular method for payments. However, criminals must remain cautious to avoid being caught, leading to the purchase of fake IDs, which can be risky.

    • The Importance of Trust in CybercrimeCybercriminals rely on trusted partners to gather data, commit the crime, and cash out profits. Without strong partnerships, the crime is likely to fail.

Trust is a key factor in successful cybercrime. Criminals often rely on specialized skills and geographic locations of others to gather data, commit the crime, and cash out profits. Without a network of trusted individuals, the crime is likely to fail. For example, when Dmitri Bob started selling stolen credit card details through his website, Carter Planet, he relied on partnerships with other Ukrainians who had large amounts of data. These partnerships allowed him to succeed in gathering data and committing the crime, but it wasn't until he found trusted partners to cash out the profits that the scheme became truly successful.

    • Inside the World of Counterfeit Libraries: A Dangerous Haven for Financial GainCriminals are creating counterfeit libraries, offering fake identification and credit card data for sale. The level of fraud is immense, with experienced fraudsters earning up to $40,000 a month. It's a dangerous business with significant financial gain.

The section discusses the formation of a counterfeit library where criminals sell fake driver's licenses, credit card data, and social security cards. The narrator explains how he became the top reviewer on the site and how the arrival of script, someone offering credit card data, made them nervous. After testing script's services, the site shifted to credit theft, and experienced fraudsters could profit up to $40,000 a month. The site also sold physical counterfeit credit cards, and the narrator became the United States salesperson for dumps provider, boa. The section highlights the danger and willingness of people to engage in fraudulent activity for financial gain.

    • A Former Cyber Criminal Shares Insider Information on Credit Card Theft and Cash-Out MethodsCriminals can use fake ID cards to swipe credit cards and walk out without paying. Ukrainians found a way to encode a complete Track 2 without needing an algorithm, resulting in them stealing up to $40,000 a day. Law enforcement eventually caught on.

Brett Johnson, a former cyber criminal, shares his experiences in credit card theft and the evolution of cash-out methods. He explains how fake ID cards can be used to swipe cards and send verification tracks to the cashier, allowing a person to walk out with the item without paying. Johnson also reveals how Ukrainians found a CVV one breach or hack, which allows them to encode a complete Track 2 without needing any algorithm. This resulted in them stealing up to $40,000 a day, relying on Americans to cash out and sending the money through Western Union. Eventually, law enforcement agencies caught on, and Johnson's access to sex offenders and drivers' license databases was eventually shut down.

    • Former Cybercriminal Reveals How He Generated Income by Filing Fake Tax Returns for the DeceasedThe ease of generating fake identities and filing for Social Security Death Benefit only by the family of the deceased made it easier for a cybercriminal to steal large sums of money. Stricter security measures are necessary to prevent fraud.

In this section, former cyber criminal Brett Johnson discusses how he was able to generate recurring income by filing fake tax returns for deceased individuals. He discovered that after 1998, only the family of the deceased needed to file for a Social Security Death Benefit, making it easier for him to create identities. He would file tax returns manually every six minutes, working 10 hours a day for three days a week. His system involved finding a business to claim a refund before the IRS could verify that the person was still employed, enabling him to steal $160,000 a week for ten months out of the year. He used a backpack to hold $150,000 worth of cash, which he later learned to launder through cash-based businesses. This serves as a cautionary reminder of the importance of verifying identities and the need for stricter security measures to prevent fraud.

    • Money Laundering Techniques and Criminal Activities in CybercrimeMoney laundering involves moving cash through different accounts and using cash-based businesses to make transactions look legal. However, there is a risk of getting caught and violence is often involved in these criminal activities.

Brett Johnson discusses money laundering and how it hasn't changed much over time. To launder money, a cash-based business is used to make transactions look legal. Bank accounts in different countries are opened to move the money and prepaid debit cards are utilized to connect them. The aim is to move the money so much that it can't be traced, but there is always a risk of getting caught. Hops make it almost impossible to trace money as it moves through different accounts. The conversation then takes a dark turn when violence is introduced into the criminal activities of the group. Overall, the interview sheds light on the world of cybercrime and the measures taken to conceal illegal activities.

    • Importance of Trust in Criminal CommunitiesTrust is crucial for criminals to ensure they are dealing with fellow criminals and not law enforcement or scammers. Criminal organizations like Shadow Crew provided this trust mechanism, but the rise of dark net markets allowed for anonymous illegal transactions.

The interview with Brett Johnson, a former cybercriminal, highlights the importance of trust in criminal communities. Johnson explains that trust is essential because criminals need to know they are not dealing with law enforcement or someone who will rip them off. Shadow Crew, a criminal organization Johnson was part of, provided this trust mechanism for criminals through their communication channels, forums, vouching systems, and escrow systems. However, the rise of cryptocurrency and the Tor browser led to the creation of the dark net and dark net markets, where criminals could buy and sell illegal goods without fear of getting caught.

    • The Dark Side of Tor: From Navy Experiment to Criminal HavenMotivation, whether status, cash or ideology, can lead people down dangerous paths. It's important to understand the consequences of our actions and how technology can be exploited for illicit purposes.

The Tor browser was developed by the United States Navy to allow operatives to communicate with each other without being identified. While initially intended for good, once released as open-source software, criminals began to adopt it to launder money and remain anonymous. Silk Road, the infamous dark web marketplace, was created by Ross Ulbricht, who believed he could change the world by becoming the largest drug dealer on the planet. Interestingly, Ulbricht was motivated by ideology rather than cash, which makes stopping him much harder. This highlights how motivation, whether status, cash, or ideology, can lead people down dangerous paths, and it's important to understand the consequences of our actions.

    • The Potential Benefits and Pitfalls of an Open Market for DrugsAn open market for drugs could break down bureaucratic institutions, but the adoption of new technology like cryptocurrency may initially be taken up by darker parts of society. Trust mechanisms and review systems are crucial in criminal networks, but criminals may turn on each other when money isn't being made.

The conversation between Lex Fridman and Brett Johnson reveals the potential benefits of an open market for drugs, which could break down outdated and bureaucratic institutions. Cryptocurrency is an example of how this could change society, although it may first be adopted by darker parts of society. The story of Albert Gonzales and his arrests highlights the incompetence of government agencies in understanding the digital world. The conversation also explores the importance of trust mechanisms, such as review systems, in criminal networks. However, it also shows that criminals may turn on each other when money isn't being made, as seen with Elmyriachi's lack of success in his job.

    • How a Group of Credit Card Fraudsters Got CaughtCredit card fraud can result in serious consequences including arrest, and often goes hand-in-hand with illegal activities like drugs.

This section tells the story of a group of fraudsters who use stolen credit cards to place large orders and then collect the products before the fraud is discovered. However, their plan is foiled when a co-op PD traps them in a sting operation. Credit card fraud is a serious crime that can lead to arrests and severe consequences. It is also important to note that drugs and other illegal activities often go hand-in-hand with fraud, further emphasizing the potential risks of engaging in such activities.

    • The Consequences of Engaging in Cyber CrimeEngaging in cyber crime can lead to addiction and personal isolation, damaging one's ability to form genuine human connections and grow as an individual. It's not worth the easy money and anonymity.

Brett Johnson, a former cyber criminal, warns that engaging in cyber crime can have severe personal consequences. While many cyber criminals may not be arrested, it doesn't end well because of the type of person they become. The addiction to cyber crime becomes a priority over everything else, causing individuals to lie to themselves and those around them. These lies can isolate individuals from genuine human connections such as true friendship and love, making it impossible to grow as individuals. Therefore, while the allure of easy money and anonymity are tempting, it is not worth the personal toll it can take.

    • The Devastating Consequences of Cybercrime and the Path Towards HealingCybercrime can have life-altering consequences, but seeking help and choosing a legal career path can break the cycle of criminality.

Cybercrime can lead individuals to become despicable, destructive human beings who steal from others, including retirement funds and from those trying to do good for their families. The consequences can be dire, including loss of life and being hunted down by the mob. Additionally, the fear of being abandoned can drive individuals to engage in controlling behaviors, including putting a keylogger on their partner's computer. Seeking therapy can help individuals break the cycle of criminality, and ultimately, real estate can be a more ethical and legal path forward.

    • Falling for a stripper: A cautionary tale of love, addiction and heartbreakStrippers may offer a therapeutic experience at strip clubs, but it's important to recognize the potential hazards and not confuse their work with genuine relationships. Substance abuse and prostitution are real issues that can harm these dancers.

Brett Johnson shares a personal story about his experience meeting a stripper at a strip club and falling in love with her. He talks about how strip clubs can be a place where strippers become a therapist for their clients. He eventually moves her in with him and discovers that she has been using cocaine and prostituting herself to support her habit. This heartbreak leads him to leave the relationship.Substance abuse and prostitution can be a sad reality for some strippers and not all relationships that start in strip clubs are healthy or sustainable.

    • The Dangers of Criminal Activity for LoveEngaging in illegal activity to sustain relationships or lifestyles comes with severe consequences. Seek help for addiction instead of relying on criminal behavior to avoid a similar fate.

In this section, Brett Johnson discusses his criminal activity while trying to make his relationship work with a woman who struggled with drug addiction. He spent large amounts of money and ran counterfeit cashiers' checks to support his lavish lifestyle and engagement plans. Despite his efforts, he was ultimately arrested and taken away from his partner, leaving her worried and alone. This serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers and consequences of engaging in illegal activity to sustain relationships or lifestyles, and the importance of seeking help for addiction rather than relying on criminal behavior.

    • The Troubled History of a Former CybercriminalBrett Johnson transforms his life by working with law enforcement officials, but despite the deal, he continues to engage in illegal activities.

Brett Johnson, a former cybercriminal, recounts his experience of getting arrested and spending three months in jail. During this time, he tried to call his girlfriend, Elizabeth, who had been berated with questions and personal items were taken from her by the authorities. Eventually, two secret service agents flew in from New Jersey and ended up making a deal with Johnson. He would work for them and help them fight cybercrime, and in return, they would get him out of jail and let him be with Elizabeth. He was able to convince her to take him back, but he continued to engage in illegal activity, even while working for law enforcement.

    • The Consequences of Dishonesty and Illegal Activities in RelationshipsDishonesty and illegal activities can have severe consequences on relationships. It's important to find legal ways to deal with financial problems instead of risking harm to oneself and others. Always be truthful with your partner about financial struggles.

In this section, Brett Johnson shares stories of his declining relationship with Elizabeth and his involvement in illegal activities while working for the Secret Service. He also reveals his struggle to provide financial support to Elizabeth and eventually lying to her about it. Dishonesty can cause irreparable harm to a relationship, and engaging in illegal activities is never a solution to financial problems. It's better to be truthful and find legal ways to deal with financial issues rather than risking physical and emotional harm to yourself and others.

    • Brett Johnson's Tax Return Fraud and the Importance of Taking ResponsibilityGetting involved in illegal activities can have serious consequences and it's important to take responsibility for one's actions. Don't make the same mistake as Brett Johnson by refusing to do the right thing.

Brett Johnson taught someone how to commit tax return fraud and they were caught. When the police questioned Brett about it, he refused to take a polygraph, stating that he failed and they would throw him back in jail. He was given multiple chances to do the right thing but was not ready at that time. Eventually, he walked out of jail when no one called the secret service to tell them his bond had been reinstated. This section highlights the consequences of getting involved in illegal activity and the importance of taking responsibility for one's actions.

    • The Dangers of Social Engineering and Criminal ActivitiesCriminal Brett Johnson used social engineering to steal and profit, but was eventually caught and experienced diesel therapy. This story shows the risks of engaging in illegal activities and the consequences that follow.

Criminal Brett Johnson used social engineering to steal prepaid debit cards and make a profit of $160,000. He dreamed of escaping to Brazil and continuing his criminal activities, but eventually ended up on the run and was eventually caught. He experienced diesel therapy, a grueling and intentional transportation process meant to wear down prisoners mentally and physically, and was advised to fake a drug problem to increase his chances of getting help in federal prison. This story highlights the dangers of social engineering and the repercussions of engaging in criminal activity.

    • A Former Cybercriminal's Journey to Manipulation and Comfort in Federal PrisonBe honest during pre-sentence interviews, and do not manipulate loved ones for personal gain.

Brett Johnson, a former cybercriminal, shares his experience of being sentenced to federal prison and how he manipulated his way to a more comfortable living situation. He reveals that during his pre-sentence report interview, he disclosed his drug use and how it affected his ability to have an erection. This information was included in his report, which was used to determine his sentencing. He ultimately found himself in minimum-security prison with the help of his father. He also shares how his father's desire to connect with him led him to manipulate his dad into helping him escape prison. Johnson's story highlights the importance of being honest during pre-sentence interviews and not manipulating loved ones for personal gain.

    • Brett Johnson's Capture and Time in Solitary ConfinementBrett Johnson, a fugitive evading the US Marshals, was eventually caught due to his mistake of using his real driver's license to check into a hotel. He spent eight months in solitary confinement but was released early through a drug program.

Brett Johnson was able to evade capture by the US Marshals for a few weeks but was eventually caught when they found him in a hotel in Lexington, Kentucky. They tracked him down by canvassing the area and talking to every hotel. Johnson had dyed his hair and had a deep tan, so he didn't really look like himself. But, he had used his real driver's license to check-in which ultimately led to his arrest. After being sentenced for his escape, Johnson spent eight months in solitary confinement with no access to books, pen, paper or anything else except a mat and a toilet. He slept for almost 16-18 hours a day. Eventually, he got out of prison three months earlier than he was supposed to by participating in a drug program.

    • Adjusting to Life in Federal Prison: Tips and WarningsUpon arriving at a new prison, expect to be met by inmates of your same race and possibly organized by gangs. Clarify your crime to prevent misunderstandings and never attempt to snitch.

In federal prison, the first week is the toughest, but eventually you start to adapt to the environment. Books are highly prized in prison, and you are happy to receive them, such as the well-versed King James Bible. You can also receive other books over time. However, prisons are not run by guards, but by inmates. When you arrive at a new prison, you are met by inmates of your same race. At the Big Spring prison in Texas, the inmates are organized by gangs, such as the Aryan Brotherhood. In prison, "computer crime" often refers to child pornography, so it is important to clarify one's crime to prevent misunderstandings. Snitching is highly frowned upon in prison and can lead to serious consequences.

    • Surviving Federal Prison: A Guide to Staying SafeFollowing rules and avoiding dangerous groups is crucial for survival in federal prison. Inmates must be cautious and aware of their surroundings at all times to avoid serious consequences, including death.

In federal prison, there are strict rules and hierarchies that must be followed, and breaking them can result in serious consequences, including death. As a result, inmates quickly learn to avoid certain groups and activities, including associating with pedophiles and rapists. In order to stay safe, it's important to have a job and follow the rules closely. Prison life can be dangerous, and inmates must always be aware of their surroundings and who they associate with. Even simple actions, such as reading a magazine, can lead to trouble if not approached cautiously.

    • Trust, Survival, and Transformation in the Prison SystemInmates in prison rely on trust to survive, even during riots. Programs like cognitive behavioral therapy have transformed some inmates. However, the system can tear apart families with limited support for those who have gone through it.

The prison system operates on a network of trust, where inmates rely on each other to survive. During riots, inmates of different races band together, and to avoid suspicion, inmates have to pass a trust test. Guards do not intervene in fights quickly for fear of getting hurt, so prisoners have to rely on their own wits to survive. Inmate-run classes and therapy programs also exist to help inmates, and some programs like the nine-month cognitive behavioral therapy program have truly transformed inmates. Finally, it is shown that the prison system can tear apart families, as the only constant support, in some cases, disowns inmates who have gone through the system.

    • From Cyber-Criminal to Successful LandscaperNo matter how low you may feel or how severe your past mistakes are, with determination and the support of others, you can overcome the obstacles and rebuild your life.

After serving time in prison for cyber-crime, Brett Johnson struggled to find employment due to his criminal record. He resorted to shoplifting toilet paper and was on the verge of being evicted from his apartment when he met his current wife through a friend's ad on Plenty of Fish. She gave him a place to live and he found work as a landscaper, promising to work his hardest. He eventually proved himself and was offered partnership in the business. Even after making mistakes, it's possible to turn your life around with hard work and support from others.

    • From Cybercriminal to Cybersecurity Consultant: Brett Johnson's Journey and AdviceCybercrime is a serious threat, and everyone should take steps to protect themselves and their businesses. He also advises not to associate with cybercriminals or enable their illegal activities. Finally, Johnson's story shows that even those who have made mistakes can turn their lives around and make a positive impact in society.

    • Defending Against Cybercrime: Steps for Companies to TakeCompanies must cut off relationships with criminals, prioritize network security, report cybercrime, and use various tools, including white hat hacking and pen testing, to identify vulnerabilities. Educating employees and stakeholders is crucial.

To effectively defend against cybercrime, companies need to understand that it's not just a single person attacking them, but rather a network of criminals exchanging information freely. Taking steps to cut off relationships with those involved in criminal activity is essential. Organizations must also appreciate the importance of network security and understand that social engineering and outdated systems are common vulnerabilities. Additionally, reporting cybercrime to law enforcement and raising awareness among employees and stakeholders is crucial. • The Controversy Surrounding the Use of ID Verification Companies by Government AgenciesBe cautious of sharing your complete identity with private companies like ID me for government benefits. Consider the risks and benefits before using identity verification services. Protecting our identities is essential.

The use of identity verification companies, like ID me, by government agencies is a controversial issue that citizens should be aware of. While private companies can set their own policies about how they use personal information, citizens should not be forced to give up their complete identity profile to these companies in order to receive government benefits or services. There are also concerns about the security of ID me's verification system and their use of personal information for marketing purposes. These concerns highlight the value of our identities and the need to protect them from potential misuse. It is important for individuals to consider the risks and benefits of these identity verification services before using them.

    • Help Others, Not Yourself - The Ultimate Goal of LifeOur priority should be to benefit others, while testing systems and circumventing rules. We can find hope in a divisive world by connecting with people on a human level and working together towards the goal of helping one another.

Helping people and not hurting them should be the focus of our lives. While it's okay to test systems and circumvent rules as long as the law isn't being broken, the ultimate goal should be to benefit others. Despite the current state of the world and the divisive nature of current events, there is hope for the future if we can all work together and connect with each other on a human level. Finding the meaning of life is about discovering this lesson of helping one another, and that should be our ultimate goal as individuals.
