    About this Episode

As a young kid growing up in a musical family in St. Louis Minnesota, he discovered KISS, and from that moment on, in addition to being a hockey player in his youth (and running his first ever 5K at the age of six), all he wanted to do was become a guitarist. His mother said that was fine, but he had to learn piano first, and after 3 years of piano lessons, he could pick up the guitar. He didn’t complete those three years of lessons until he was 18 years old. By his mid 20’s he was teaching music, even though he was self-taught.

As a stay at home dad (his wife was an editor of a medical journal), he needed to contribute to the family income, and teaching seemed the natural thing to do. That along with flipping houses (his first one took him 5 years), his outside endeavors allowed him to pursue his musical career.

In this episode, we discuss how sometimes, our creative dreams can get in the way of good financial sense, how we rely on others to handle that for us (such as record labels), or completely ignore the fact of putting money away for that rainy day. How do we finance one’s career? How do you sustain your love for music in the long run, when things aren’t quite working out the way you thought?

Donovan White is a touring guitarist for the bands “Vertical Horizon”, and the “Gin Blossoms”, along with performing gigs in Nashville TN when not on the road.

#307 - An Alligator Walking Thru The Everglades

Continuing our ongoing series of "Between The Notes" episodes with music industry veteran Jack Sharkey, We have a discussion that is often overlooked, or at the very least ignored... The loss of hearing due to years of performing live music. Jack, who himself suffers from hearing loss because of loud volumes on stage (along with a inexperienced sound engineer on occasion), had permanent damage done to his ears after decades performing live. Ironically, Sharkey also works in the audiophile business for a speaker company, and explains how hearing damage can affect your day to day living, whether its with family, or in the workplace. This outcome comes down to causing injury that can be permanent if not addressed. Jack shares thoughts on how to prevent hearing loss, and what it takes to get some of those frequencies back if the damage is done.

As for the episode title, you'll just have to tune in and listen (it comes from the usual antics Jack and Bob do while in the studio!).

#305 - Night Train To Nashville

#305 - Night Train To Nashville

What started out as a project in a screenwriting class in a writers boot camp, has turned into a novel describing how Nashville, also known as “Music City” evolved into what it is today… or not. Nashville Tennessee is well known for its Country music, but did you know that the birthplace of Rhythm and Blues, or what we these days call “R&B” actually was born in this Middle Tennessee City we call Nashville.

The moniker “Music City” was actually derived from the1860’s after the Civil War, when the Jubilee Singers from Nashville’s Fisk University performed in front of England’s Queen Victoria, preceding Country music by approximately 80 years or so.

In the studio today, we chat with author Paula Blackman about the “night music” that took place in Nashville in the midst of segregation in the 40’s, 50’s and early 60’s, how the legendary Nashville TN based WLAC Radio had the ability to broadcast across the Eastern United States, and how this worked out in the favor of introducing R&B Music to the World.

A retired gemologist, Paula Hope Blackman turned her lifelong storytelling hobby into a second career, becoming an author, screenwriter and playwright. She is a sixth generation native of Tennessee, who divides her time between Nashville and Southwest Florida, where she lives with her husband, Michael Iacampo.

    #304 - The Disruptors

    #304 - The Disruptors

    dis·rup·tion (noun)

Definition: "A radical change to an existing industry or market due to technological innovation."

According to our guest Jack Sharkey, who is with KEF Audio, music and the culture at large needs disruption to keep it fresh and engaging. The digital revolution and the chokehold the “industry” has on art has made it nearly impossible for the next generation of disruptors to be heard.

There is plenty of good music being made today and we shouldn't always subscribe to the philosophy that music was better back in the day so to speak. Music is music, and it will always touch those who wish to be touched by it. The difference today is the folks who control the money aren’t willing to upset the apple cart by taking a chance on something that hasn’t been tried before.

Who are the disruptors of music today? When can we anticipate the next Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, or The Beatles, all who turned the music and cultural scene upside down?

On this very special edition of The Business Side of Music, we share the microphone with Jack Sharkey, who in addition to being a technical advisor for KEF, is also a Blog writer, and the host of the "Between The Notes" podcast show.

#303 - You Have One Chance To Make a Bad First Impression

#303 - You Have One Chance To Make a Bad First Impression

What makes a successful singer or songwriter? Is it perseverance? Is it working with seasoned co-songwriters or industry veterans? Could your stumbling block be the lack of networking or that first impression? There are often more questions than answers. Enter Marc-Alan Barnette to help us navigate those swampy waters.

Marc-Alan Barnette, aka “THUNDER THROAT”, has always been a “square peg in an octagonal hole”. His blue eyed soul voice, has drawn comparisons to Ray Charles and Delbert McClinton, and his seemingly endless collections of songs pretty much summon up everything, covering country, blues, rock, bluegrass, soul, and every comedy. The man has a lot of sides.

His over 40 year career in music has spanned the rock era of the70’s and 80’s, moving to country in the late 80’s, scoring songs recorded by “GRAMMY WINNER SHELBY LYNNE” (THAT’S WHERE IT HURTS), country superstars, DAVID BALL (TOO MUCH BLOOD IN MY ALCOHOL LEVEL) JOHN BERRY (RESCUED ME), and Warner Brothers artist FRANKIE BALLARD (BAREFEET) and many, many, more. A natural born entertainer, he is a bundle of energy, often described as a ‘cross between professional wrestling and tractor pull” something you just have to see to appreciate. His songwriting is instinctive, covering many genres, and always lives up to a line in his songwriting anthem, “TABLES AND CHAIRS” that says, “You don’t choose music, music chooses you.”

With Marc-Alan Barnette, it seems music has chosen wisely.

    #300 - Our 300th Episode!

We can’t believe it's been six years in the making to get to this moment, and we wanted to do something special… or at least different. For the first time ever, the host of the show, Bob Bender, becomes the guest! After all this time, we find out what makes Bob tick, how (and why) he got into the music business, and the reason he stuck with it for 50 plus years. He also shares some of the inner workings of the music business, including its sometimes not so nice side of the industry, along with the perils and pitfalls he faced along the way. Hosting the show is Bob’s good friend, Joe Hand, who takes the helm, and asks the hard questions. There’s even a nice little surprise at the end of the show that pretty much left Bob speechless (almost).

Joe Hand is a lifelong musician, producer, recording artist, and writer. A graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Joe has been making music for over 35 years, both on stage, and in studios all over the world. He’s worked with such diverse artists as Linkin’ Park to John Michael Talbot.

At your pace, and within your level of expertise without fear of being overwhelmed.

In this episode, we discuss the Open Studio concept, how it's designed to work at one’s own pace, and its benefits as a useful and versatile learning tool for creative musicians. We also chat with Peter’s new jazz album project titled “Generation S”.

Peter Martin is an acclaimed jazz pianist, composer, arranger, educator and entrepreneur.

His touring career has taken him to six continents, and Brian has been invited to play the White House on several occasions.

Peter Martin performed on and arranged Dianne Reeves’ Grammy-winning release A Little Moonlight and appeared in George Clooney’s 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck, as well as being the featured pianist and an arranger on the Grammy-winning soundtrack. Peter has also performed, toured, and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti, Betty Carter, Christian McBride, and Joshua Redman, as well as the Berlin Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic.

Peter attended the Juilliard School of Music and has been on the faculties of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, Northwestern University, Tulane University, the University of New Orleans and New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. In 2015, after launching an successful educational video podcast, 2-Minute Jazz, Martin founded a revolutionary jazz educational web platform, Open Studio, where students from over 120 countries are part of an active community and are continuing to learn from Martin, Dianne Reeves, Fred Hersch, Christian McBride, Greg Hutchinson, Romero Lubambo and other artists.
