    30. Why Things Seem So Difficult

    en-usJune 19, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • The Real Challenge in Making Positive ChangesSetting goals and creating plans is easy, but consistently implementing changes and overcoming obstacles is the real challenge in making positive improvements in life.

Making positive changes in life, such as starting a workout routine or eating healthier, can seem easy and achievable when planned out logically. However, the challenge comes when trying to implement these changes in real life. At Planet Fitness, individuals can focus on their fitness goals without the added pressure of upsells or hidden fees. Meanwhile, filling out the FAFSA form can help high school seniors and their families secure scholarships and financial aid for college, making higher education more accessible. In the realm of personal development, it's essential to understand that setting goals and creating plans is just the first step. The real challenge lies in following through and consistently implementing those changes, even when faced with obstacles or setbacks. By recognizing this, we can better prepare ourselves for the challenges that come with making positive changes in our lives.

    • Acknowledging emotional challenges in changeRecognizing emotional challenges is crucial for successful change, as ignoring them can make new habits seem difficult and unachievable.

Setting unrealistic expectations based only on logic and ignoring the emotional aspect of new habits or challenges can make them seem difficult and unachievable. When we plan for change, we often focus on the positive emotions and ignore the discomfort and anxiety that come with trying something new. It's essential to acknowledge and prepare for the emotional challenges that come with change to increase the chances of success. Remember, it's natural to feel uncomfortable when starting something new, and embracing that discomfort can help us push through and make progress towards our goals.

    • Embracing the newness of experiencesAccepting emotions as normal part of new experiences can help navigate and enjoy them more effectively.

Our emotions and feelings towards new experiences significantly impact how we perceive and ultimately enjoy them. When we try something new, it's natural to feel anxious or intimidated, but the meaning we assign to these feelings can make or break the experience. If we view these emotions negatively and believe we shouldn't be feeling them, we risk ruining the entire experience. Instead, acknowledging and accepting these feelings as a normal part of the newness can help us navigate the situation more effectively. Additionally, being prepared for these emotions and anticipating potential challenges can help mitigate their impact. Overall, embracing the newness and recognizing that our emotions are a natural response can lead to a more positive and fulfilling experience.

    • Remember discomfort is temporarySelf-comfort and reassurance can help us get through uncomfortable situations and find enjoyment in new experiences, despite our brains' tendency to catastrophize.

When trying something new or facing uncomfortable situations, it's essential to remind ourselves that the discomfort is temporary and will fade away. Our minds have a tendency to catastrophize and assume that the initial experience will continue to be as uncomfortable. However, with self-comfort and reassurance, we can get through these moments and eventually find enjoyment in new experiences. It's important to remember that our brains often set up these situations in our heads, making them seem more intimidating than they need to be. By learning to comfort ourselves and acknowledge that things will get easier, we can overcome the mental hurdles and approach new experiences with a positive mindset.

    • The Expectation of Instant GratificationWhile technology makes life convenient, some aspects still require effort and patience. Embracing challenges can lead to personal growth.

Modern technology, particularly smartphones, has made life incredibly convenient by allowing us to meet various needs quickly and with minimal effort. From social interaction to food delivery, we can now satisfy our desires instantaneously. This ease and speed have set a new standard in our minds, making us expect everything to be quick and effortless. However, it's essential to remember that many aspects of life still require significant effort and patience. Adjusting to this reality can be challenging, but recognizing the value of putting in effort and embracing the challenges can lead to personal growth and fulfillment.

    • The Value of Patience and Effort in Achieving GoalsOur overreliance on technology for instant gratification is leading to a lack of patience and effort, causing frustration and dissatisfaction when faced with tasks requiring time and dedication. Appreciate the value of putting in effort and persevering through challenges, like reading a physical book.

Our reliance on technology for instant gratification has led to a lack of patience and effort in achieving goals. This is causing frustration and dissatisfaction when faced with tasks that require time and dedication. The convenience of technology has made many of us forget the value of putting in effort and persevering through challenges. This is particularly evident in activities like reading books, which are now often replaced by audiobooks or digital versions. While technology has its benefits, it's essential to recognize the importance of patience, determination, and putting in effort to achieve our goals. The ability to read a physical book is a testament to these qualities and should be appreciated.

    • Valuing instant gratification and convenience in the digital ageSpeakers prefer quick, easily accessible info on digital platforms, feel frustrated when can't find what they want, and rely on tech for entertainment

The speaker values quick and easily accessible information over traditional forms of learning like reading books. They prefer the convenience of digital platforms like YouTube and TikTok, where information is presented in bite-sized pieces. The speaker also expresses frustration when they can't find the information they're looking for online and feels that everything has already been done or discussed. Additionally, they mention their reliance on technology for entertainment and how it's become a go-to solution for avoiding boredom or sitting with their thoughts. The overall sentiment is that instant gratification and convenience are highly valued in today's digital age.

    • The past required more effort for distractions, leading to greater self-awarenessModern technology offers easy escapes from emotions, hindering personal growth and deeper connections

Modern technology provides instant distractions from uncomfortable emotions, making it harder for people to connect with themselves and the world around them. People in the past had to put more effort into finding distractions, leading to greater self-awareness. Today, smartphones and social media offer easy escapes, but these distractions can hinder personal growth and deeper connections. The speaker acknowledges their own reliance on technology for comfort and perspective, but recognizes the importance of facing emotions head-on for true self-awareness.

    • Finding motivation and inspiration onlineOnline resources can help us find motivation and inspiration, but recognizing their limitations and putting in extra effort can lead to greater personal growth

Our devices and online resources can serve as valuable tools for finding motivation and inspiration when we're feeling unmotivated or overwhelmed. Whether it's listening to music, watching inspiring videos, or even shopping for furniture, these resources can make difficult tasks seem easier and more manageable. However, it's important to recognize that these tools aren't always readily available or effective, and we may need to put in extra effort and mental energy to find what we're looking for. Additionally, it's crucial to check our assumptions and expectations, as they can sometimes make simple tasks seem harder than they need to be. Overall, embracing the challenges that come with finding motivation and inspiration, both online and offline, can lead to greater personal growth and fulfillment.

    • Challenging Perceptions of DifficultyRecognize that perceived effort may not match actual effort, challenge your perspective to enjoy the process and reach your goals.

Our perception of difficulty can significantly impact our experience and effort in achieving our goals. The speaker in the text acknowledged that he was putting in a normal amount of effort but felt it was harder due to his self-imposed expectations. By reevaluating his perspective and recognizing that the effort required was not excessive, he was able to enjoy the process and find satisfaction in his progress. Additionally, the speaker emphasized the importance of self-reflection and checking in with oneself to assess the actual level of effort required. He also offered coaching services for those seeking guidance in transforming their lives and reaching their goals. Overall, the takeaway is to challenge our perceptions of difficulty and recognize that what may seem daunting at first might be within our reach with a shift in perspective.

A Buddhist Approach to Patience | Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche

A Buddhist Approach to Patience | Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche
These are not hospitable times for the mental skill of patience. Instant gratification has never been more thoroughly scaled. You can order food, taxis, and shampoo from your phone. Streaming services autoplay the next episode of whatever show you’re binging. You can ask Siri or Alexa for the weather, the latest sports scores, or the dating history of Paul Rudd. And on a deeper level, of course, global tumult is trying our patience -- with the pandemic, political polarization, climate disruption, and cultural divides over race, gender, and more.  My guest today comes armed with great tools we can all use to exercise a muscle that, for many, is badly atrophied. As you’ll hear him explain, the Buddhist approach to patience goes way beyond grin and bear it; instead it’s about developing a mind that can work positively with whatever is bothering us. Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche grew up in a monastic environment in Northern India. His father was said to be the third incarnation of a great Tibetan master. His mother was his first teacher -- a renowned practitioner who completed thirteen years of solitary retreat before she got married. Rinpoche now lives in the U.S. -- in southern Colorado, where he has a mountain retreat center called Longchen Jigme Samten Ling. His students include former guests on this show, such as Pema Chödrön, the best-selling Buddhist author, and Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel, a teacher and author who is also his wife. Rinpoche has a new book out called Peaceful Heart: The Buddhist Practice of Patience. In this interview we talk about: how to define patience from the Buddhist lens; what practices he suggests for getting better at patience; the difference between patience and passivity; the challenges he still faces in the patience arena; and the role of patience in eating and in enduring physical pain.  Also: We're offering 40% off the price of a year-long subscription for the Ten Percent Happier app until June 1st.
