#335 - Nicole Arbour - Dating, Haters & Mental Health

    enJune 17, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • Staying focused and proactive in comedyComedians should prioritize personal projects, be proactive instead of reactive, and use positivity and coolness to attract audiences, while conservatives should go on the offensive to grow their following.

In today's world, the abundance of content provides endless inspiration for comedy but can be overwhelming. Nicole Arber, a comedian and YouTuber, shares her insights from a decade of public attention, controversy, and success. She emphasizes the importance of focusing on personal projects and being proactive rather than reactive in comedy. Nicole also criticizes the current tactic of conservatives being on defense and suggests they should go on the offensive to attract more people to their team. She advises being positive and cool to draw people in and share one's message. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of staying focused and being proactive in the face of an overwhelming amount of content and controversy.

    • Focus on creating and promoting awesome content, be good humansInstead of reacting to attacks or distractions, focus on creating valuable content and being good humans to attract people to your side

Instead of focusing on reacting to the perceived attacks or distractions from the left, conservatives and libertarians should focus on creating and promoting their own awesome content and being good humans. The speaker believes that this approach will be more effective in attracting people to their side, rather than engaging in constant battles or being consumed by personal issues. She also mentions the concept of the "Me Me Me Society," where people demand attention for their personal identities and preferences over being good humans, and suggests that this mindset is easier than creating valuable art or making a positive impact. The speaker encourages focusing on what one can control and create, rather than complaining about external factors.

    • Blaming External Factors and Focusing on SolutionsInstead of blaming others, focus on creating solutions and moving forward. Let go of blame and cancellation culture. Encourage grace, understanding, and practical actions to improve situations.

People often blame external factors for their problems instead of taking action to improve themselves or their relationships. This can lead to a cycle of complaining and blaming others, rather than finding solutions. The discussion touched upon this phenomenon being observed in various contexts, including relationships and political debates. The speakers suggested that instead of focusing on blame and cancellation culture, we should focus on creating and moving forward. They advocated for more grace, understanding, and letting people be, even if they have made mistakes or hold different beliefs. The conversation also touched upon the issue of virtue signaling and the futility of taking kneels or similar actions as a solution to complex social issues. The speakers encouraged focusing on practical actions to help improve situations rather than just signaling virtues.

    • Focusing on Practical Solutions Over Symbolic GesturesInstead of merely acknowledging social issues through symbols, prioritize finding practical solutions to make a real impact.

The speaker values action over symbolic gestures when it comes to addressing social issues. They believe that instead of continuously acknowledging problems through banners and virtual signals, we should focus on finding practical solutions to move forward. The speaker also appreciates the sense of humor and ability to take the piss in cultures like the UK and Canada, and finds the individualistic nature of the US to lead to excessive fighting and taking offense. They have noticed that growing up in Canada and moving to America, people in the US take themselves too seriously, while Brits and Canadians have a more lighthearted approach to life.

    • Finding balance: Taking oneself seriously and not too seriouslyEmbrace individuality, laugh at oneself, and stand up for personal beliefs to foster personal growth and creativity.

Finding a balance between taking oneself seriously and not taking things too seriously is essential for personal growth and creativity. The speaker shares his experience growing up with friends making racist jokes and the importance of being able to laugh at oneself. He also discusses the impact of "piss taking" in the UK, which while encouraging a lack of self-importance, can also stifle creativity due to the fear of being ridiculed. The speaker admires the American culture of encouraging individuality and ambition but believes that Canada's politeness can sometimes lead to cowardice during challenging times. Ultimately, the speaker emphasizes the importance of standing up for oneself and not letting fear of criticism hold one back.

    • Rigidity from procedures and tall poppy syndromeProcedures can lead to rigidity and lack of individual thinking, while tall poppy syndrome can result from taking oneself or others lightly. Both can lead to unjust labeling and canceling of individuals.

Procedures and orderliness, while beneficial in certain situations, can also lead to rigidity and lack of individual thinking. This was evident in the story of a woman who had COVID antibodies but was threatened with expulsion from the actors union due to her recent travel history. The Canadians' adherence to procedures was praised at the beginning of the pandemic, but six months in, it became a problem when people were unable to think for themselves. Similarly, the tendency for people to take themselves lightly in the UK and Canada can lead to tall poppy syndrome. In the US, people have their strengths and weaknesses, but cancel culture can lead to unjust labeling and canceling of individuals. The speaker also shared a personal story about her own past tweets that were taken out of context and led to negative labeling. Ultimately, it's important to remember that people are complex and imperfect, and we should approach situations with grace and humanity.

    • Overcoming Adversity: A Decade-Long Journey of Healing and ResilienceDespite facing numerous injuries and challenges, the speaker found strength and renewed hope through resilience and support from loved ones.

A severe car accident left the speaker with numerous injuries, including nerve damage, a head injury, and chronic pain. This experience led to a decade-long struggle with disability, communication, and daily functioning. Despite the desire to give up due to the physical and cognitive challenges, the speaker found solace in overcoming adversity and learning valuable lessons about resilience. A recent surgery to remove scar tissue brought a sense of closure and renewed hope. Throughout this journey, the speaker refused surgery in favor of less invasive treatments, including physical therapy and nerve block injections. While the experience was overwhelming and at times disorienting, the speaker ultimately found strength in the challenges faced and the people who supported her throughout her recovery.

    • Choosing positivity and determination in the face of adversityThrough buying self-help books, filling environment with positive affirmations, and focusing on identity, individuals can shift their mindset and heal from physical pain and disability.

Even in the face of extreme physical pain and being given a disability certificate, it's possible to heal and improve one's life through positivity, determination, and a shift in mindset. The individual shared her experience of undergoing frequent procedures that left her in shock, but instead of giving up, she chose to buy a self-help book, fill her environment with positive affirmations, and focus on her identity as a cheerleader to cheer herself back to life. Despite having bad days, she prepared herself for them and continued to flood herself with motivation and positivity. This mindset shift, along with alternative therapies, helped her on her journey to recovery.

    • The power of support and mindset in overcoming challengesSurround yourself with believers, embrace mental resilience, turn past suffering into strength, and use experiences to help others. Believe in your ability to overcome adversity.

Having the right support system and mindset can help individuals overcome even the most challenging situations. The speaker shares her personal experience of firing doctors who doubted her ability to recover and surrounding herself with those who believed in her healing journey. She emphasizes the importance of mental resilience and turning past suffering into a source of strength. The speaker encourages people to harness the power of their experiences and use them to help others. She also acknowledges the challenge of connecting with people who haven't gone through similar experiences and encourages empathy and understanding. Ultimately, the speaker's message is one of hope and the belief that everyone has the capacity to overcome adversity and grow from it.

    • Sharing authenticity and truth for connectionBeing true to oneself while helping others can lead to positive impact, but recognizing limits and staying authentic is crucial.

Authenticity and truth are powerful tools for connection. The speaker shares her experience of overcoming challenges and using her platform to share her truth, which resonated with many people and led to her viral success. However, she also learned the hard way that trying to help others at the expense of her own wellbeing can lead to trouble. Therefore, it's essential to be authentic and true to oneself while also recognizing the limits of what we can do for others. Additionally, having faith in the potential for others to overcome their struggles can be a powerful motivator, but it's important to remember that not everyone may be ready or willing to receive that help. Ultimately, leading by example and staying true to oneself is the best way to make a positive impact on the world.

    • Life experiences can change our values and perceptionsExperiencing major life events can lead to significant shifts in our values and perceptions, challenging how others see us and requiring us to look beyond superficial appearances to truly understand people.

Our perceptions and values can change significantly after experiencing major life events. The speaker, who was once superficial and valued physical beauty and material possessions, underwent a transformation following a car accident that left her with physical disfigurement. She now prioritizes inner qualities and no longer cares about external appearances. This shift in perspective has led to misunderstandings and challenges in how others perceive her, as they struggle to reconcile her past image with her current beliefs and passions. The speaker also criticizes the way society relies on stereotypes and archetypes to understand people based on their past experiences or appearances, which can limit our ability to appreciate their true selves. Ultimately, the speaker encourages us to look beyond superficial appearances and judge people based on their character and actions.

    • Embrace individuality, not societal expectationsLearn from constructive criticism, disregard personal attacks, and stay true to oneself to express art fearlessly

It's essential to embrace individuality and not let criticism or societal expectations shrink us. The artist in the discussion expresses her diverse talents and interests, from music to comedy to politics, and encourages everyone to do the same. She advises evaluating criticism by determining if it's true and, if so, learning from it. Personal attacks should be disregarded as a reflection of the critic, not the artist. The artist shares her experience of receiving backlash for a parody video, which she initially took to heart but later learned was premature and not offensive to most. Ultimately, she encourages staying true to oneself and not letting fear of criticism hold us back from expressing our art.

    • First movers face criticismEmbrace criticism, learn from others' mistakes, stay true to oneself, and use motivation to shine brighter.

Being a first mover in the content creation industry doesn't guarantee success, and criticism is inevitable when taking risks. The speaker shared her experience of being the first to do something and receiving all the heat, but learning that it's better to let others trailblaze and learn from their mistakes. She also emphasized the importance of staying true to oneself and not letting criticism deter from one's passion. The speaker encouraged embracing criticism and using it as motivation to shine brighter and continue being authentic. She acknowledged that haters will always exist, but it's essential to remember that it's not about the creator, but the nature of taking risks and putting oneself out there. The speaker also emphasized the importance of having a strong support system to help deal with criticism and low motivation.

    • The Importance of Support SystemsSurround yourself with uplifting individuals, prioritize personal growth, and treat others with respect for positive relationships.

Having a strong support system is crucial for navigating through life's challenges, both personally and professionally. Surrounding oneself with individuals who uplift and motivate, like Danelle Delgado and Tim Grover, can help during tough times. However, it's also essential to be there for others when they need support. In dating, focusing on personal growth and moving on from past relationships instead of holding grudges or comparing partners is essential for building healthy and meaningful connections. The promotion of toxic behavior in relationships and social media is not cool or trendy and only degrades and devalues individuals. Ultimately, treating others with respect, kindness, and integrity is the key to fostering positive and fulfilling relationships.

    • Building Meaningful Relationships: It's About Inner Qualities, Not External FactorsFocus on inner qualities like kindness, loyalty, and grace when seeking relationships and friendships, rather than superficial attributes like physical attractiveness or material wealth. Be authentic and true to oneself.

The way to build meaningful relationships and connections is not based on superficial attributes like physical attractiveness or material wealth, but rather on inner qualities such as kindness, loyalty, and grace. These qualities, often referred to as "beauty," are timeless and can manifest in the way people move and carry themselves. It's essential to prioritize these qualities when seeking relationships and friendships, rather than focusing on external factors like wealth or popularity. The speaker emphasizes that true happiness and fulfillment come from being surrounded by good, kind, and loyal people, regardless of their material possessions. Additionally, the speaker encourages being authentic and true to oneself, and not trying to be someone else or conform to societal expectations. Overall, the key takeaway is to prioritize inner qualities and authenticity when building relationships and seeking friendships.

James & Claudia Altucher Choose Themselves: Musings On Relationships, The Power of Vulnerability & Creating Success Doing What You Love

James & Claudia Altucher Choose Themselves: Musings On Relationships, The Power of Vulnerability & Creating Success Doing What You Love
I'm so intimidated. This week Julie and I are joined by the dynamic duo of the Choose Yourself era themselves, James and Claudia Altucher — a prolific couple changing the world with insights that are empowering millions to live more dynamic, authentic lives. When someone fires off a long list of occupations in conversation, my instinct tells me that person probably isn't great at any of them. James is not that guy. Abundant in talent. A true polymath with just the right amount of self-deprecation and pitch perfect comedic timing. Blogger, bestselling author, podcaster, public speaker, investor, entrepreneur, columnist, and humorist, he seemingly does it all. Oh yeah, he's also a nationally ranked chess master. James had made millions, lost millions and made millions again. Maybe he'll lose it again. I don't know. He’s started and run something like 20 companies. Then there's a slew of venture capital, hedge, angel and sundry other funds he ran. Maybe he still runs them. I don't know that either. In fact, I don't understand any of it. James' Altucher Confidential is one of the most widely read blogs on the internet, amassing over 15 million readers since its 2010 inception. The James Altucher Show debuted as the #1 podcast on all of iTunes last year. I think he's written 13 books. It could be 16. I can't keep track. He writes faster than I can read. My favorite is the Wall Street Journal Best Seller Choose Yourself. A primer for anyone seeking firmer control of destiny, it's a prescient and highly entertaining look at how new and unprecedented tools, technology and economic forces have suddenly emerged to make it possible for individuals to create art, careers, success, fulfillment and change the world without permission from the gatekeepers of yore. When you finish that book, then read The Power of No — also a Wall Street Journal Best Seller. Two things you need to know about this book: (1) it's really great; and (2) learning how and when to say no is, like, really important. Wait, there's a third thing: it was co-authored by James' wife Claudia. In many ways James' perfect match, the Argentinian-born Claudia is also a widely acclaimed multi-hyphenate. Writer, podcaster and yoga aficionado, she has written or co-written three books, including the recently released Become An Idea Machine. You can find her Yoga Podcast on iTunes and read her musings at ClaudiaYoga.com. But I don't know how much longer she can keep this up because any day now she's going to be named the new CEO of Twitter. Am I joking? Read this and you tell me. I had James on my podcast a while ago. Then I did his podcast. Then Julie did Claudia's podcast. They fell in love. I was already in love with James. The only thing? None of us had ever met in person. Until now. Wonder twin powers activate! I'm not sure whose podcast we did. We just hit record and started freestyling. I thought we were interviewing James and Claudia but now I think I have it all backwards. Enjoy! Rich
