#37 The tenets of sustainable product development in composites (ENGLISH)

Happy new year from Composites Lounge and the LinkedIn Industry Community.

Being in the industrial field for over 30+ years I am always eager to present new trends and technologies. Advanced materials have been trending for a while now. I do remember at around Y2K it commenced becoming the go-to solution and represented a true innovation in many fields.

Lately, sustainability has been added and that's why my three content pillars comprise of technology, innovation and sustainability.

I am overly glad that my guest Dr. Timo Huber of ACTC will be available for a live talk. ACTC is a bit particular in that it combines the traits of an R&D Centre and an incubation platform. This business model is an innovation in itself and I am truly wondering what are the similarities and differences of ACTC to a manufacturing corporation and a third party testing entity.

We will delve into also the TRL, that is technology readiness level that many of you may not be aware of. TRL is a term that describes the maturity level of your innovation and whoever is busy with new product development should be aware of it. Needless to say that the European Commission and other governmental bodies require identification of the beneficiary's TRL for grants.

While we have Timo in China, we will show you around the HRC facility. Yes, Timo joins me live from China. There will be an opportunity to talk about thermoset, thermoplast and composite processes in some detail during our stream.

With only a month away JEC World 2024, the world's largest exhibition on composites opens its doors in Villepente (Paris, France).

This podcast episode is split in 2 parts:

Thomas Lepretre, JEC Group's Show Director, will give you on the first part an update regarding what you can expect on the showfloor from 5 to 7 March 2024.

One, if not the largest booth is entertained by Composites United on these days and therefore we are honoured to have the CEO Dr. Gunnar Merz joining us at this show.

Inside the Composites Germany Roof, of course AVK plays a major role and Volker Mathes will represent them. He will particularly talk about the latest findings on their proprietary studies.

Moving further west, we have invited RAPHAEL PLEYNET of the The European Composites Industry Association; EuCIA , who has even a broader view and an updated study in his wallet on a pan-European level.

The association round is completed by our guest from the UK.

David Bailey FRAeS Ph.D is the CEO of Composites UK - Trade Association and besides the fact that they organise the UK pavillion at JEC World 2024, we want to know from him the latest UK developments.

In the second round, our guests not only represent the whole DACH region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland), but also Europe and the Middle East. This in line with the "World Concept" of JEC World.

Our guests are Alexander Wiesner of Langzauner GmbH a press and automatisaton expert on composites. alan harper on reusable bags, a very important sustainable feature in composites production processes. Then with Christoph Schneeberger of Antefil Composite Tech we will go deep on Fibres and how to cover them for better bonding. Stefan Fleischmann is a polymer expert with a trackrecord in the plastics industry and will be a great asset to bridge the world of injection molding with Stefans fibre tech.

Last, but not least Nasri Ben Frej is a coated textile expert and we want to have the reinforcement angle included in our TechTainmentTalks today. In addition, he is a true expert in business development throughout the Near- and MiddleEastern regions.

Wait what?

Yes, under the bonnet (British) or hood (US american) and other body in black (not white) components you find carbon composites in this piece of race engineering.

Join me to one of the most funniest interviews this year and let me introduce you to fun composites expert Naomi Johnson. I approached her during the recent International Composites Summit in Milton Keynes (UK) when David Bailey FRAeS Ph.D of Composites UK - Trade Association pointed me to the yellow luxury beast of a sports car.

Not only does Naomi run us through the process of DFM (Design for Manufacture) that she applies at KS Composites with her luxury motorsport car manufacturers, but also explains the aforementioned body panel system which is easy to paint. Which means this bright yellow color is carbon black underneath in reality.

Naomi knows all the weave types, all the matrices and glossy or matt finishes and she demonstrates carbon in a way that will blow your mind!

Naomi is a true role model in composites! She lives and breathes composites.

Products or Solutions?

As a manufacturer of technical solutions there is always the question whether to narrow the offerings down to products only or is it recommendable to look at the wider picture and offer solutions.

Our Director of Engineering Daniel Ernst has been interviewed at the Semicon Europa 2023 Expo in Munich just on this matter.

Kürzlich auf der Semicon Europa, die parallel zur productronica in München stattfand, war ich zu Besuch bei Winkler AG.

"Bedenken Sie im Einsatz von Medienleitungen auch welche sind kritisch und welche Medienleitung könnte mit einem beheizten Heizschlauch mit entsprechendem redundanden Fühler und Regler überwachen"

Das sind neben vielen weiteren Aspekten Impulse, die uns Wolfgang Stipanitz kürzlich am Stand der Winkler AG 🌡️ auf der Semicon Europa gab.

Übrigens externe Regler können heute laut Herrn Stipanitz durchaus mit einer Kommunikationsschnittstelle (Leittechnik) verbunden werden. Der Regler kann bei Unregelmäßigkeiten der Beheizung Alarm schlagen, um den schlimmsten Fall zu vermeiden, dass eine Medienleitung z.B. in einem Chemiebetrieb versagt und möglicherweise Konsequenzen nach sich zieht, bis hin zum Standby und somit ein ganzes Gebäude herunter gefahren werden muss.

Bjoern Henkel, General Manager gibt sehr viele Einblicke gemeinsam mit Herrn Stipanitz über die erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit in Österreich, die nun mittlerweile schon 28 Jahre andauert.

Das ist die Mission von dem Start-Up-Booster Challenge Gewinner 2023 der JEC Group kürzlich in Salzburg, Österreich.

Hör dir in der heutigen Folge an, wie Dr.-Ing. Juliane Wagner, die im übrigen hervorragend vor der Audience pitchte, welche Nachhaltigkeitsergebnisse bei der CO2 Einsparung entstehen können, wenn man alte Gebäude saniert, renoviert und erhält, statt sie abzureissen und neu aufzubauen.

Natürlich kann man ein Gebäude mit modernster Haustechnik effizienter versehen, wenn man neu baut, aber den Charme vergangener Tage kreativ zu nutzen, heute sagt man "vintage" dazu, ist auch sehr wertvoll!

Mit dieser Folge schliesse ich dann das Composites Jahr 2023 in Ko-operation mit den JEC Foren formell ab. Es war eine sehr schöne und bewegende Zusammenarbeit. Sind wir doch alle gemeinsam froh, dass wir die Lockdowns hinter uns gelassen haben.

Mitten im Lockdown mit Entwicklungspartnern, die auf der halben Welt verstreut sind mal eben einen Innovationspreis von der AVK abgeräumt

In meinem kürzlichen LinkedIn Business Vlog (LBV) habe ich im Rahmen der #Composites360OnTour in Salzburg 🇦🇹 Ausschau nach absoluten Highlights gehalten und hier darf ich der Composites Community einen weiteren vorstellen:

Die Composite Technology Center / CTC GmbH (An Airbus Company) hat beim JEC Forum DACH den Innovationspreis für Carbon Recycling ♻️ abgeräumt.

Das Besondere daran und das kann ich als Textiler ⚜️ absolut jedem empfehlen, schau nicht nur auf Deine Faser🪡 und die Matrix 🧬, sondern auch auf die Legetechnik 🎗.

Ob Deine recycelten Carbonfasern mit einem Airlay🌪 Vliesbildner oder Krempelkreuzleger vor dem Vernadeln 📌 gelegt werden macht einen immensen Unterschied.

Während vor uns Dr. Tassilo Witte seine Begeisterung für die Textiltechnik kaum verbergen kann ist Marc Fette überaus erfreut, solch ein Projekt über ein Dutzend Zeitzonen hinweg (mit Japan) gewuppt zu haben.

Im Namen der Composites Lounge meine Hochachtung für diese Leistung und vor allen Dingen, dass CTC Vorreiter ist die Textiltechnik, RTM und Pressen zu einem kohärenten Composites Prozess zu bringen.

Mit ihm sprechen wir über nachhaltigere Luftfahrt. Viele fragen, aber wie? Und genau, das ist die Mission dieses Unternehmers, der die die Zukunft der Luftfahrt – Nachhaltig & Individuell gestaltet.

Mobilität in der 3. Dimension – Wie fliegen wir in Zukunft? Dieser Frage gehen wir auf den Grund am Albrecht Dürer Airport Nürnberg.

Wir stehen direkt vor einem kleinen Flugzeug und wir werden von Air2E erfahren, was das individuelles fliegen überhaupt ist und was es bringt.

Sicherlich war noch nicht jeder in einem Flugzeug, geschweige denn in einem Business Jet. Daher wollen wir wissen, wer sind die typischen Kunden und was genau erwarten diese Kunden?

Wir werden aber auch auf die Kritik von Einzelreisen mit dem Flugzeug eingehen.

Am 17.9.2023, also genau vor 2 Jahren war Ilkay Özkisaoglu, DER Social CEO von LinkedIn bereits mit Norbert am GAT hier im Flughafen Nürnberg. Damals kündigte Air2E den Kauf von Elektroflugzeugen an. Selbst das Handelsblatt, Deutschlands größte Tageszeitung, berichtete.

Wir wollen nun wissen, wie da der Stand ist und wann Stromer in die Luft gehen können.
