5 Things Only Fake Friends Do & How to Let Go of What No Longer Serves You with Trent Shelton

    enFebruary 29, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • Surround yourself with positive peopleEvaluate relationships, let go of toxic ones, and prioritize positive connections for personal growth and happiness.

The people we surround ourselves with significantly impact the quality of our lives. Negative relationships can hinder our growth and happiness, while positive ones can support and inspire us. It's essential to evaluate our connections and protect ourselves from unhealthy relationships that drain our energy, distract our focus, and no longer fulfill us. Trent Shelton, a motivational speaker and author, emphasizes the importance of identifying and letting go of toxic connections to make room for more positive and fulfilling relationships. By prioritizing our peace and surrounding ourselves with supportive people, we can create a better life for ourselves.

    • Pay attention to how you feel around certain peopleSurround yourself with individuals who support personal growth and love you for who you are

The people and environment around us significantly impact our lives. If we're surrounded by individuals who drain us or make us question ourselves, it can hinder our personal growth and happiness. To identify if we're surrounded by the wrong people, we should pay attention to how we feel. If we're constantly questioning their loyalty or if their presence no longer provides benefits, it may be time to reassess the relationship. When we start making positive changes in our lives, we may notice a shift in the dynamics of our relationships. Ultimately, it's essential to surround ourselves with individuals who love us for who we are and support us in our personal growth.

    • Assessing One-Sided FriendshipsRecognize when friendships become one-sided, evaluate the dynamic, and consider re-prioritizing or distancing if necessary for personal growth and peace.

As we grow and change, the roles of people in our lives may shift. It's important to recognize when friendships become one-sided and to reassess their position in our lives. If we find ourselves consistently giving more than we receive, it may be time to step back and evaluate the dynamic. True friends will be happy for our happiness and support us in our successes, not resent or envy us. If we find ourselves surrounded by people who don't celebrate our achievements or make us feel bitter, it may be time to reconsider the nature of that relationship. We don't have to cut ties completely, but learning to love people from a distance can bring us more peace and fulfillment in our lives.

    • Avoid friends who want your life for themselvesRecognize unique journeys, beware of jealousy and envy, and make intentional choices about the people we allow into our lives.

It's important to be mindful of the people we surround ourselves with and the potential negative impacts they may have on our lives. Trent shared that there are certain types of people we should avoid being friends with, starting with those who want our lives for themselves. This can lead to feelings of jealousy and envy, which, when left unchecked, can become toxic. It's essential to recognize that everyone's journey is unique, and we cannot truly know the sacrifices and struggles others have faced to achieve their success. Additionally, the company we keep can significantly impact our own opportunities and perceptions. By being aware of these dynamics, we can make more intentional choices about the people we allow into our lives.

    • Choose friends wiselySurround yourself with people of good character, positive mindset, and uplifting life choices. Avoid gossips and those who speak negatively about others.

It's important to be selective with the people we surround ourselves with. Trent Shelton emphasizes that we should only be friends with those we'd be happy to trade places with, considering their character, mindset, and life choices. He also warns against being friends with gossips, as they often speak negatively about others behind their backs. Our energy and peace are valuable commodities, and we should invest them in positive relationships. Remember, the people we spend the most time with have a significant impact on us, so it's crucial to ensure they lift us up rather than bringing us down.

    • Surrounding Ourselves with the Right PeopleRecognize not all friendships are equal, identify 'frenemies', trust intuition, build new connections, let go of toxic relationships, and seek support from unexpected places for growth and happiness.

The people we surround ourselves with significantly impact our lives. While it's natural to value friendships based on familiarity, it's essential to recognize that not all relationships are equal. Some friends may not genuinely support us, and it's crucial to identify those who may be acting as enemies or "frenemies." These individuals may spread doubts, fears, and negativity, or fail to show up when we need them most. It's important to trust our intuition and pay attention to the energy and actions of those around us. Sometimes, our greatest supporters may come from unexpected places – new friends or even strangers. Remember, everyone we consider a friend began as a stranger, and building a strong support system requires being open to new connections. Trusting the right people and letting go of toxic relationships can lead to growth and happiness.

    • Celebrating wins and building a supportive circleRecognize the importance of acknowledging achievements and surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals for personal growth and happiness.

Celebrating your wins and having a supportive circle are essential for personal growth and happiness. Fear of judgment or making others uncomfortable can prevent us from acknowledging our achievements and building a strong, aligned community. It's important to recognize that having a smaller, loyal circle can lead to clearer vision, congruency, and more significant impact. Additionally, people closest to us may struggle to support us due to their own unhappiness or scarcity mindset, which can cloud their perspective and prevent them from seeing our potential for success. By focusing on finding like-minded individuals and working on personal growth, we can create a powerful and supportive network that fosters happiness and encourages each other's success.

    • Transforming Negative Energy into PositivityTaking responsibility for your own happiness and not letting jealousy or negativity bring you down can lead to personal growth and positivity.

True happiness and positivity come from within, and it's essential to take responsibility for one's own life instead of blaming others or trying to bring them down. Mel shared her experience of becoming a "hater" when she felt jealous and unhappy with her own life. She realized that the best way to heal her pain was not to give pain but to accept and change herself. Mel emphasized that if you're not happy with your own life, it's challenging to be happy for someone else. She also shared that her son, Tristan, was the turning point for her, as she didn't want him to follow her negative path. By facing the truth and making changes, Mel was able to transform her life and become the positive, inspiring person she is today.

    • Embrace the power to shape your futureTake control of your present to prevent regret and meet a happier, more fulfilled version of yourself by making small changes and having uncomfortable conversations.

Regret is a powerful poison that can negatively impact our lives if we don't make changes to better ourselves. The future version of ourselves depends on the choices we make today. If we want to prevent regret and meet a happier, more fulfilled version of ourselves, we must take action now. This could mean making small changes like reading a personal development book or communicating clearly with those around us to set boundaries and expectations. Don't wait for the future to come to you; take control of your present to shape your future. Remember, you are responsible for your own happiness and growth. So, if you're feeling stuck or surrounded by negativity, start by having uncomfortable conversations and opening yourself up to new possibilities. The future you is coming, and it's up to you to decide if you want to meet a happier or more miserable version.

    • Expressing intentions and respecting autonomyEffectively communicate intentions, respect autonomy, focus on personal growth, and prioritize self-well being for a fulfilling life.

Effective communication is key in navigating personal growth and relationships. It's important to clearly express your intentions and expectations to those around you, while also respecting their autonomy to make their own choices. Additionally, focusing on personal growth and not living in regret is crucial for living a fulfilling life. It's essential to differentiate between being used to help and grow others, and being misused, and making difficult decisions to protect oneself from continuous harm. Ultimately, being true to oneself and prioritizing personal well-being is essential for living a happy and authentic life.

    • Identifying and living by your principlesEstablishing strong principles based on personal values and goals leads to a fulfilling life, guiding decisions and staying true to oneself, despite challenges

Developing strong principles that align with your values and goals is essential for living a fulfilling life. These principles act as a compass, guiding your decisions and helping you stay true to yourself. To establish such principles, consider identifying what you truly want in life, what you value, and what standards you wish to uphold. It may take time and effort, but the rewards are worth it. Ignoring your principles can lead to regret, while standing by them, even when it's difficult, can bring a sense of peace and satisfaction. Remember, your loyalty should be to your principles, not to people or external pressures. By prioritizing your principles, you'll be better equipped to navigate life's challenges and live authentically.

    • Stay true to your pace and principlesValuing moments and making decisions based on personal principles prevents burnout and leads to a more fulfilling life.

Understanding and being loyal to your principles and pace can significantly impact your life and prevent burnout. Mel shared her personal experiences and the importance of valuing moments and making decisions based on your own guiding principles, rather than comparing yourself to others or trying to keep up with their pace. She emphasized the significance of staying true to yourself and running your own race at your own speed, as this can lead to peace and efficiency in both personal and professional aspects of life. By being loyal to your pace, you can avoid burnout and make decisions that align with your values, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and authentic life.

    • Trusting the journey is essential for staying consistent and overcoming challengesTrusting oneself, the process, and a positive outcome can help individuals navigate uncertain times, overcome self-doubt, and maintain a sense of peace and direction in life.

Trusting oneself and one's journey is crucial for staying consistent and overcoming challenges in life. Trusting the process, even when things don't make sense or seem to be going wrong, can help individuals navigate uncertain times and come out stronger. Comparison and external validation should be let go of, and instead, individuals should focus on their internal alignment and belief in themselves. Trusting in one's abilities and proving it to oneself is a powerful tool for overcoming self-doubt and staying focused on personal growth. Faith in a positive outcome, even if it doesn't yet exist, can also help individuals stay hopeful and motivated during difficult times. Trusting the journey, rather than fixating on external factors or comparisons, is essential for maintaining a sense of peace and direction in life.

    • Believing in the alignment of your soul and the belief in a better futureBelieving in your soul's alignment and worthiness can create momentum, lead to small actions, and help navigate the external world, ultimately falling in love with the possibility of a better future.

Trusting in the internal alignment of your soul and believing that there is something bigger meant for your life can help you find momentum and break through feelings of hopelessness. Small actions, such as getting out of bed, eating healthily, and exercising, can serve as proof of this belief and create "soul momentum." Additionally, understanding and demanding your worth can help you navigate the external world and avoid being undervalued. Ultimately, focusing on internal alignment and worthiness can lead to falling in love with the possibility of a better future.

    • Finding a solid foundation for self-worthTo live confidently, believe in inherent worth, cut ties to external sources, and find a foundation in faith or self-belief. Start with self-forgiveness, self-love, and surround yourself with positivity.

Understanding and believing in your inherent worth is essential for living a fulfilling and confident life. However, when our sense of worth is tied to external factors like people's opinions, social media, or our jobs, it can lead to inconsistency and suffering. To break free from this, it's crucial to identify and cut the strings attached to external sources of worth. Instead, find a solid foundation based on principles like faith or self-belief. When we demand our worth and believe in ourselves, we can avoid settling for less and the resulting suffering. For those struggling with low self-worth, the journey begins with self-forgiveness, self-grace, and recognizing that everyone is imperfect. Start by loving yourself, practicing self-care, and surrounding yourself with uplifting people. Remember, your past does not define your present or future.

    • Surround yourself with positivity for self-worth growthSetting boundaries and surrounding ourselves with positive people and environments can boost self-worth and personal growth

The people and environments around us can significantly impact our self-worth. Surrounding ourselves with individuals who uplift and believe in us can help us develop a stronger sense of self-value. Conversely, continuing to accept negative treatment or toxic relationships can hinder our personal growth. It's essential to set boundaries and learn to say "no" to situations and people that don't serve our best interests. Ultimately, treating ourselves with respect and valuing our own worth sets the stage for better experiences and healthier relationships. Remember, we have control over what we accept, and setting boundaries is not a wall to keep things out but a bridge to let the right things in.

    • Setting healthy boundaries for personal growth and relationshipsEffectively setting boundaries involves identifying needs, establishing limits, and fostering respect for self and others.

Setting healthy boundaries is essential for personal growth and maintaining healthy relationships. Boundaries provide a balance between giving and receiving, allowing individuals to protect their peace and energy. To set effective boundaries, ask yourself what you need, what boundary you need to set, and why it's important. Remember that boundaries are not a means of exclusion but rather a necessary tool for connection. By understanding and respecting each other's boundaries, relationships become stronger and more beautiful. Additionally, losing your way is not a failure but an opportunity for growth. Embrace the process, maintain faith, and be patient, as better things are on the horizon.

    • Embrace life's challenges and trust yourselfBelieve in self-growth, support children's choices, find purpose, prioritize happiness, and make a positive impact.

Life's challenges and experiences shape us into stronger individuals. Trust the process and believe in yourself. As parents, we must learn to let go and trust our children to make their own choices while continuing to support them. Our purpose is not something to be searched for, but rather an inherent part of who we are. To find meaning in our lives, we must take ownership of our purpose and bring positivity into our environments. Lastly, if you're in a toxic relationship, prioritize your happiness and move on to better things. Focus on the possibilities of what's to come rather than the fear of the unknown. Remember, you are capable of making a positive impact on the world.

    • Believe in yourself and keep climbingBelieve in your abilities, hold on to hope, and never give up on your dreams. Your struggles build your character and lead you to your greatest potential.

No matter how difficult your current situation may seem, it's not your final destination. You deserve more than what you're settling for, and you have the power to change your life. You are your purpose, and your struggles and pain are building you for something greater. Believe in yourself, appreciate the little things, and keep going. Your best life is coming for you, and you have the ability to make the world respect your greatness. Remember, the path may be hard, but it's worth it. Keep climbing that mountain and hold on to the belief that your peak is coming. You are loved and appreciated, and your words have the power to change lives. Keep believing, keep climbing, and never give up.

E482 Ask Nick - Addicted to Toxic Work Situationship

Welcome back to another juicy and exciting episode of The Viall Files: Ask Nick Edition! On this show, we’re here to help with all your burning questions about dating and relationships! We bring on our first caller, who has been in a long distance relationship for a long time with her boyfriend. After it looks like they are able to move much closer and no longer have to do long distance, our caller wonders how to best transition into this new phase, being able to enjoy each other but also respect the space they might need. Our next caller finds herself stuck in a toxic work environment when a situationship starts to go astray. Having an intense  emotional relationship with someone you work with everyday, our caller feels stress when not being able to set proper boundaries both at work and in the situationship with her coworker. Our last caller struggles when her husband's friend continues to try to insert himself and befriend our caller’s family. After her mother says she’s getting DMs from this friend, our caller is unsure how to read his intentions and how to set boundaries while also potentially being supportive if need be.
