    • George Mumford's first impression of Michael JordanGeorge Mumford was deeply impressed by Michael Jordan's intense focus and mental clarity, a state often described as samadhi or calm concentration.

George Mumford's first encounter with Michael Jordan, whether it was during practice or in a locker room, left a profound impact on him due to Jordan's intense focus and energy. Mumford describes this experience as having an alert, relaxed yet intense energy, a state often referred to as samadhi or calm concentration in meditation circles. Contrary to some reports, Mumford did not initially believe Jordan was suffering from a disorder, but rather was in a state of exceptional mental focus. Mumford's work with world-class performers, from athletes to executives, emphasizes the importance of mindfulness and mental focus in achieving peak performance.

    • Understanding the purpose behind intensityIndividuals with a strong self-efficacy display intense energy not out of anxiety or a need to impress, but as a determination to prove their worth and improve. This mindset can be compared to a cat's graceful ferocity.

The difference between high intensity and a positive mindset lies in the purpose behind the intensity. An individual with a strong self-efficacy, like the basketball player described, may display intense energy not out of anxiety or a need to impress, but as a determination to prove their worth and improve. This mindset can be compared to the graceful ferocity of a cat, ready to pounce and excel with ease and direction. Working with top athletes, including legends like Michael Jordan, required a unique approach. The reverence and worship around these figures were not always present, and their journeys to greatness were not without challenges. For instance, the speaker, in his early career, struggled with addiction and had to conceal his tracks from employers during the security clearance process. These anecdotes illustrate the importance of understanding the underlying motivations and mindsets that fuel intensity and success.

    • Personal story of addiction and recoveryAddiction is a complex disease affecting identity and lifestyle, not a sign of weakness, requires treatment and support.

Addiction is a complex and progressive disease that can begin with trying to alleviate emotional or physical pain. The speaker shared their personal experience of starting with skin popping drugs and eventually becoming addicted to a variety of substances. They noted that addiction becomes not just a physical craving, but also a part of one's identity and lifestyle. The turning point for the speaker came when they faced a serious health crisis and were denied pain medication due to their addiction. This realization led them to hit a spiritual bottom and seek help through 12-step meetings. Addiction can affect anyone, and it's important to understand that it's not a sign of weakness, but rather a disease that requires treatment and support.

    • Hitting rock bottom and seeking helpTo overcome addiction, hit rock bottom, seek help, and embrace change for a successful recovery journey

Hitting rock bottom and seeking help were crucial steps for the speaker to begin their journey towards recovery. The speaker's friend played a significant role in introducing them to a support group, which provided a way forward. During this time, the speaker continued to use drugs and alcohol but started thinking about change. When they entered detox, they realized they had to be a different person to maintain sobriety. This mindset shift allowed them to see their situation clearly for the first time and embrace life without the influence of substances. Their first powerful mindfulness experience came during their recovery when they recited the serenity prayer to overcome an obsession and manage chronic pain. Overall, the speaker's story highlights the importance of hitting rock bottom, seeking help, and embracing change for a successful recovery journey.

    • Finding peace and self-transformation through mindfulness and meditationThe Serenity Prayer guided the speaker's recovery from chronic pain and addiction, introducing them to mindfulness and meditation practices that enhanced their personal growth and led to teaching these skills to others, ultimately resulting in peace, ease, freedom, and compassion.

The Serenity Prayer served as a grounding mantra for the speaker during their recovery from chronic pain and addiction. They credit a distress management program they participated in for introducing them to mindfulness and meditation practices, which enhanced their recovery and personal growth. Through reading and studying, they became deeply interested in understanding the mind-body connection and how to take control of their life. This led them to teach mindfulness and meditation to others, and they spent several years living and working at a meditation center. The practices they learned helped them find peace, ease, freedom, and compassion, leading to a significant self-transformation.

    • The Power of Reading and Personal GrowthReading influential books can lead to personal growth and development. Seek knowledge and understanding from various genres and sources, including spiritual texts.

The books we read have a profound impact on our personal growth and development. The speaker shared how certain books, such as "Beginner's Mind" and "The Three Laws of Performance," have been particularly influential in their life and have been recommended to others. They also highlighted the spiritual wisdom found in religious texts like the Bible and the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding. The speaker's reading list spans various genres, from existentialism to psychology, and they emphasized that the books that resonate with us the most can depend on our individual circumstances and the time in our lives. Overall, the speaker's reflection underscores the power of reading and the transformative effect it can have on our lives.

    • Recognizing unique strengths in hiringEffective hiring involves recognizing the whole person and their unique strengths to build a well-rounded team.

LinkedIn can be a valuable tool for businesses looking to hire the right talent, with the first job post being free. This was the case for George Mumford, who went from teaching mindfulness in prisons to working with the Chicago Bulls basketball team, thanks to an introduction from Phil Jackson. Jackson believed that Mumford's unique skill set, which included helping people manage stress and find focus, would be beneficial for his team, who were dealing with the pressures of success. By bringing Mumford on board, Jackson aimed to support his players in their personal and professional growth, not just as basketball players. This experience demonstrates the importance of recognizing the whole person and their unique strengths when building a team.

    • Finding Opportunities for Growth in CrisisDuring difficult times, focus on meeting people where they are and adapting to their context for effective growth. Understand the importance of being fully present and prioritizing focus as success brings more distractions.

During times of crisis or difficulty, there lies an opportunity for growth and empowerment. This was evident when the speaker, who had experienced substance abuse, was brought in to work with a basketball team. The team was going through an identity crisis and the speaker saw this as an opportunity to help them grow. He emphasized that it's important to meet people where they are and adapt to their context rather than just focusing on the content. The speaker also highlighted that as individuals or teams become more successful, they face more distractions and it becomes crucial to be fully present and understand the consequences of one's actions. The speaker's approach was to teach the team mindfulness skills in a user-friendly language and help them prioritize their focus. He believed that understanding the context is more important than the content and that it's essential to meet people where they are to effectively help them grow.

    • Mental preparation for high-pressure situationsTeaching athletes mental focus and personal rituals enhances their performance in high-pressure situations, but it's crucial to meet each athlete's unique preferences and ways of preparing.

Effective performance in high-pressure situations requires focus and mental preparation, regardless of individual personality differences. When working with athletes like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O'Neal, the approach involved teaching them the importance of being present in the moment, understanding their mindset, and developing personal rituals to enhance their readiness to perform. However, it's essential to meet each athlete where they are, as everyone has unique preferences and ways of preparing. For instance, while some athletes might thrive on rousing music or quiet solitude, others might require a more hands-on approach. The key is to help them develop the inner game, focusing on their goals, mindset, and willingness to adapt and grow. As shown in Kobe Bryant's experience, initially, he might have struggled with meditation, but under the guidance of Phil Jackson and Mumford, he came to appreciate its benefits. The effectiveness of these techniques was not just limited to Kobe but also extended to his teammate Shaquille O'Neal. Despite their contrasting personalities and approaches, they both recognized the value of mental preparation in enhancing their performance. In essence, the primary goal is to help athletes understand the importance of mental preparation and the role it plays in their success, regardless of their unique personalities and preferences.

    • Understanding unique context and modality for communicationEffective communication requires observing individuals as unique beings, using relatable language and examples, and practicing stillness and mindfulness to deepen connection and wisdom.

Effective communication and connection with others requires understanding their unique context and modality for receiving information. This can be achieved through observing and relating to individuals as unique beings, using language and examples that resonate with them, and practicing stillness and mindfulness to cultivate wisdom and compassion. The concept of "dizziness of freedom" refers to the anxiety or uncertainty that comes with embracing new possibilities and being on uncharted paths. It's important to remember that freedom is not free, and it requires effort and courage to navigate the uncertainty that comes with it. Effective communication and connection also involve sharing teachings and applications that can help others grow and cultivate a sense of love and compassion for themselves and others.

    • The tension between growth and comfortEmbrace uncertainty and ambiguity for personal growth, as incremental improvements can be a trap if we focus too much on improving rather than breaking out of our comfort zone.

Growth and comfort don't go hand in hand. Change and new experiences bring uncertainty and discomfort, but they are necessary for personal growth. Embracing uncertainty and ambiguity, and trusting in the process, can lead to a superpower of conviction and the desire to pursue excellence. The contrast between incremental improvements and paradigm shifts illustrates this concept. While incremental improvements are helpful, they can also be a trap if we focus too much on improving rather than breaking out of our comfort zone. True growth requires a shift in perspective and a willingness to embrace the dizziness of freedom and the uncertainty that comes with it.

    • Believing in oneself leads to breakthrough momentsSmall improvements can accumulate and lead to major breakthroughs, requiring belief in oneself and focus on possibility.

Having a breakthrough or breakout moment means changing one's perspective and believing in one's capabilities. This shift can lead to significant improvements and achievements, whether in sports or other areas of life. The example of Michael Jordan illustrates this concept, as does the experience of Troy Bell, a basketball player at Boston College who experienced a quantum leap in his game during his senior year. The idea of non-linear growth suggests that small improvements can accumulate and lead to a major breakthrough. The key is to maintain enthusiasm, stay focused, and have a clear vision of possibility. The examples of Boston College's basketball team and the Chicago Bulls demonstrate that even teams or individuals who struggle can experience a breakout moment and achieve great success.

    • Observing experiences with the four A's for personal growthNotice experiences without judgment, accept outcomes, take compassionate action, and assess results to enhance performance and personal development.

Self-image and consciousness play a significant role in personal development and performance, whether in sports or other areas of life. The ability to observe experiences uncritically and make adjustments based on awareness, acceptance, compassionate action, and assessment is crucial for growth. This process, known as the four A's, involves noticing what happened without judgment, accepting the outcome, taking compassionate action to address the issue, and assessing the results to inform future actions. Practicing this mindset can help individuals overcome distractions and make the most of their experiences, ultimately leading to improved performance and personal growth.

    • Embrace distractions as opportunities for growthInstead of fighting distractions, adopt an attitude of acceptance and awareness towards them to deepen meditation practice

Instead of resisting distractions or uncomfortable feelings during meditation, we should adopt an attitude of acceptance and awareness towards them. By focusing on the distraction as the object of our meditation, we can calm down and eventually let go. This approach, known as the "Four A's" - awareness, acceptance, assessment, and action - can help beginning meditators avoid frustration and self-criticism. For example, if a thought or sensation hinders our meditation practice, we should not fight it but rather open up to it, explore it, and then come back to our focus. This perspective was illustrated in a fortune cookie message: "That which hinders your task is your task." By embracing distractions as opportunities for growth, we can deepen our meditation practice and find more ease and clarity.

    • Embrace the present moment and generate hopeAdaptability and acceptance help navigate unexpected situations, inspiring growth and success

Flexibility and adaptability are key in navigating unexpected situations. Whether working with a diverse group of Spanish-speaking students or in unfamiliar environments, embracing the present moment and generating hope can lead to positive outcomes. Acceptance of circumstances without denial or blame is essential to finding solutions and being of service. The four A's - awareness, acceptance, adaptability, and action - can be applied in any situation to inspire, motivate, and create a container to hold uncertainty. Embracing challenges as opportunities for growth and expressing latent abilities can lead to personal and professional success.

    • Focusing on positivity, social support, and opportunities during crisesEmbrace positivity, seek social support, view challenges as opportunities, practice mindfulness, compassion, and wise decisions, and share knowledge to unlock inner potential and deepen connections.

During times of crisis or adversity, focusing on positivity, social support, and viewing challenges as opportunities can help us access hidden abilities and strengths. By practicing mindfulness, compassion, and wise decision-making, we can respond in a loving and constructive manner, even in difficult situations. Sharing knowledge and experiences with others can also lead to personal growth and a deeper sense of connection. George Momford, a renowned mindfulness coach, emphasizes the importance of self-discovery and personal responsibility in unlocking our inner potential and living authentically. He encourages everyone to understand that they possess a unique masterpiece within themselves and to take action to express and share it with the world. Remember, focusing on the solution rather than the problem, and taking responsibility for our inner game, can lead to profound personal growth and positive impact on those around us.

#727: In Case You Missed It: February 2024 Recap of "The Tim Ferriss Show"

#727: In Case You Missed It: February 2024 Recap of "The Tim Ferriss Show"

This episode is brought to you by 5-Bullet Friday, my very own email newsletter.

Welcome to another episode of The Tim Ferriss Show, where it is my job to deconstruct world-class performers to tease out the routines, habits, et cetera that you can apply to your own life.

This is a special inbetweenisode, which serves as a recap of the episodes from last month. It features a short clip from each conversation in one place so you can easily jump around to get a feel for the episode and guest.

Based on your feedback, this format has been tweaked and improved since the first recap episode. For instance, listeners suggested that the bios for each guest can slow the momentum, so we moved all the bios to the end.

See it as a teaser. Something to whet your appetite. If you like what you hear, you can of course find the full episodes at tim.blog/podcast

    Please enjoy!

Sam Harris — Psychedelics, Meditation, and The Bigger Picture | Brought to you by FreshBooks and "5-Bullet Friday"

"Nothing's changed but yet, on some level, everything has changed, and I feel like I'm in a spaceship where at any moment, the leak or the breach in the wall can be catastrophic. It's a very bizarre feeling, which I know everyone is sharing to one or another degree." Sam Harris

Sam Harris (@SamHarrisOrg) is a neuroscientist, philosopher, and author of five New York Times bestsellers. His work covers a wide range of topics—neuroscience, moral philosophy, religion, meditation practice, human violence, rationality—but generally focuses on how a growing understanding of ourselves and the world is changing our sense of how we should live. His books include The End of Faith, Letter to a Christian Nation, The Moral Landscape, Free Will, Lying, Waking Up, and Islam and the Future of Tolerance (with Maajid Nawaz).

Sam hosts the popular Making Sense podcast and is also the creator of the Waking Up app, which offers a modern, rational approach to the practice of meditation. Sam has practiced meditation for over 30 years and has studied with many Tibetan, Indian, Burmese, and Western meditation teachers, both in the United States and abroad. He holds a degree in philosophy from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA.

#481: Dan Harris on Becoming 10% Happier, Hugging Inner Dragons, Self-Help for Skeptics, Training the Mind, and Much More

Dan Harris on Becoming 10% Happier, Hugging Inner Dragons, Self-Help for Skeptics, Training the Mind, and Much More | Brought to you by Eight Sleep's Pod Pro Cover sleeping solution for dynamic cooling and heating, Athletic Greens all-in-one supplement, and Theragun percussive muscle therapy devices.

After ABC News anchor Dan Harris (@danbharris) had a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America in 2004, he knew he had to make some changes. He found himself on a bizarre adventure to rein in the voice in his head that provoked his on-air freak-out and found a solution in meditation. A lifelong nonbeliever, meditation was something Dan always assumed to be either impossible or useless.

In 2014, Dan published the book 10% Happier, which takes readers on a ride from the outer reaches of neuroscience to the inner sanctum of network news to the bizarre fringes of America’s spiritual scene and leaves them with a takeaway that could actually change their lives. In 2017, Dan followed up with Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics: A 10% Happier How-To Book.

In 2016, Dan launched the 10% Happier company with co-founders Ben Rubin, CEO, and Derek Haswell, VP Product. The company was rebranded to Ten Percent Happier in 2019.

#705: Dr. Willoughby Britton — The Hidden Risks of Meditation, Overlaps with Psychedelic Risks, Harm Reduction Strategies, How to Choose a Retreat, Near-Death Experiences, and More

Brought to you by Momentous high-quality supplements, Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega fish oil, and Eight Sleep’s Pod Cover sleeping solution for dynamic cooling and heating.

Willoughby Britton, PhD is a clinical psychologist, an associate professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University Medical School, and the director of Brown’s Clinical and Affective Neuroscience Laboratory.

Her clinical neuroscience research investigates the effects of contemplative practices (meditation) on the brain and body in the treatment of mood disorders, trauma, and other conditions. She is especially interested in which practices are best- or worst-suited for which types of people or conditions and why. She is probably best known for her research on adverse effects—why they happen and how to mitigate them.

Dr. Britton is the founder of Cheetah House, a nonprofit organization that provides evidence-based information and support for meditators in distress as well as meditation safety trainings to providers and organizations.

This episode is brought to you by Nordic Naturals, the #1-selling fish-oil brand in the US! More than 80% of Americans don’t get enough omega-3 fats from their diet. That is a problem because the body can’t produce omega-3s, an important nutrient for cell structure and function. Nordic Naturals solves that problem with their doctor-recommended Ultimate Omega fish-oil formula for heart health, brain function, immune support, and more. Ultimate Omega is made exclusively from 100% wild-caught sardines and anchovies. It’s incredibly pure and fresh with no fishy aftertaste. All Nordic Naturals’ fish-oil products are offered in the triglyceride molecular form—the form naturally found in fish, and the form your body most easily absorbs.

Go to Nordic.com and discover why Nordic Naturals is the #1-selling omega-3 brand in the U.S. Use promo code TIM for 20% off your order.
