    • Epigenetics and gene expressionEpigenetics is a layer of modifications above our DNA that regulates gene expression without altering the DNA sequence. These modifications, influenced by factors like environment and behavior, are crucial for correct gene expression and preventing unwanted gene expression. Epigenetics is ubiquitous and holds significant implications for health and disease.

Epigenetics is a layer of modifications above our DNA that regulates which genes are turned on or off without altering the DNA sequence itself. These modifications, which can be influenced by various factors including environment and behavior, play a crucial role in ensuring cells express the correct genes in the correct cells and prevent unwanted gene expression. Epigenetics is not a rare edge case but a ubiquitous phenomenon, present in all cells and some modifications can last throughout one's life. The science of epigenetics is still evolving, but it holds significant implications for our understanding of health and disease. In the context of the conversation, Caroline shared her excitement about passing her driving test, while Ella discussed epigenetics as a science topic. Tom introduced the miscellaneous topic of the World Games, a lesser-known international sporting event. The group also shared their experiences with researching and learning about various topics, as well as the value of audience engagement and feedback.

    • EpigeneticsOur genes are influenced by factors beyond our DNA sequence through epigenetic modifications like methylation and histone modifications, shaping our athletic performance and long-term health.

Our genes are not static as once believed, but are influenced by various factors, including our lifestyle and environment, through epigenetic modifications. These modifications, such as methylation and histone modifications, can change how our genes are expressed without altering the DNA sequence itself. This dynamic process plays a significant role in various aspects of our lives, including athletic performance, and can even have long-term effects based on experiences during early life. It's fascinating to realize that our bodies have been adapting and changing in response to our environment in this way for as long as we've existed.

    • Epigenetics and gene expressionEpigenetics influences gene expression without altering the genetic sequence, and is impacted by factors like nutrition and developmental conditions. Imprinting, a type of epigenetic modification, determines which parent's genes are expressed in an embryo.

Epigenetics, the study of changes in gene expression not caused by alterations in the genetic sequence itself, plays a significant role in various biological processes including muscle development, hunger cycles, and gene imprinting. Epigenetic changes can be influenced by factors like nutrition and developmental conditions. Imprinting, a specific type of epigenetic modification, determines which parent's genes are expressed in an embryo. The importance of epigenetics is evident in disorders like Angelman and Prada-Willi syndromes, which result from imprinting errors. Additionally, the X chromosome, which makes up a significant portion of our DNA, undergoes X inactivation to ensure genetic equality. Understanding epigenetics adds depth to our knowledge of genetics and biology as a whole.

    • X chromosome inactivationDuring development, each cell randomly receives a mix of maternal and paternal X chromosomes, leading to genetic diversity through epigenetic modifications, while some research suggests transgenerational epigenetic inheritance may occur

During the early stages of development, each cell in a developing organism receives a random assortment of maternal and paternal X chromosomes. This process, called X chromosome inactivation, results in a mosaic of cells with different combinations of X chromosomes, each expressing genes from one parent or the other. This phenomenon, which is a result of epigenetic modifications, ensures genetic diversity and is present throughout the body. Epigenetics refers to modifiable changes to DNA that do not alter the genetic sequence but can influence gene expression. While most epigenetic modifications are erased during the creation of gametes, some research suggests that experiences in a parent's lifetime may result in transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, passing on epigenetic markers to offspring. However, the extent and implications of this phenomenon are still under investigation.

    • Epigenetic inheritance of traumaSome studies suggest that certain epigenetic markers related to traumatic experiences may be passed down through generations, but findings are limited due to small sample sizes and difficulty in collecting DNA from affected individuals. Animal models offer some insight into potential reversibility of epigenetic changes.

While most plants can reproduce asexually without the wiping of epigenetic markers, the inheritance of epigenetic markers in humans due to traumatic experiences is still a complex and nuanced area of research. Some studies suggest that certain epigenetic markers may be passed down, such as those related to the Dutch famine, the US Civil War, and Holocaust survivors. However, these findings have faced criticism due to small sample sizes and the difficulty of collecting DNA from people who have experienced prolonged trauma. Additionally, the idea of inherited epigenetic trauma should not be confused with the reality of generational trauma, which can be passed down through societal and psychological means. Animal models, such as the study on mice and cherry blossom, provide some insight into the potential for epigenetic changes to be reversed. However, researchers must be careful not to put blame or guilt onto those who have experienced trauma, as the implications for humans are still unclear and the research is in its early stages.

    • Epigenetics and agingDespite ongoing research, it's unclear whether epigenetic changes cause aging or simply occur as a result of it, and we don't yet know how to reverse them. The best way to influence your epigenetics is through lifestyle choices.

While research into epigenetics and its potential role in aging is exciting, it's important to remember that we still have a long way to go in understanding the complexities of this field. The epigenetic clock, which measures biological age based on DNA methylation patterns, is a popular topic right now, but whether these changes cause aging or simply occur as a result of it is still unclear. Additionally, even if we do identify important markers, we don't yet know how to reverse them. The best way to influence your epigenetics is through lifestyle choices such as getting enough sleep, keeping your mind active, and eating a balanced diet. So, while the research is fascinating, it's important to approach it with a critical and informed perspective.

    • World Games as a platform for new sportsThe World Games, funded by the IOC, serve as a global stage for lesser-known sports to gain recognition and potentially be included in the Olympics.

The World Games, though not as well-known as the Olympics, serve an important role as a platform for new and lesser-known sports to gain recognition and potential inclusion in the Olympics. The World Games, which are officially sanctioned and funded by the International Olympic Committee, were initiated by international sports federations that weren't featured in the Olympics, aiming to showcase their sports on a global stage. The first World Games were held in 1981, and since then, they have provided a platform for various sports to gain popularity and recognition, some of which have later been included in the Olympics. For instance, rugby sevens was first introduced in the World Games and later became an Olympic sport. Despite the lack of marketing and mainstream attention, the World Games play a significant role in the Olympic ecosystem by acting as a testing ground for new sports.

    • History of The World GamesThe World Games, an international multi-sport event, have faced numerous ownership changes, financial struggles, and unique features that distinguish it from the Olympics. Introduced in 1981, it eliminates nationalism, groups athletes by sports, and doesn't require new infrastructure, making it a more financially feasible alternative.

The World Games, an international multi-sport event, has had a complex and eventful history, marked by various ownership changes, financial struggles, and unique features distinguishing it from the Olympics. The World Games were first organized in 1981 and have since been bought and sold multiple times, including by private sports marketing firms and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). One notable instance occurred during the 1993 games in The Hague, where participants were left to pay for their own accommodations due to disagreements between the organizing committee and the Westnally group. Despite these challenges, the World Games introduced some distinct elements, such as eliminating nationalism from their competition and grouping athletes by sports instead of nations during the opening ceremony. Additionally, the World Games do not require host cities to construct new infrastructure, making it a more financially feasible alternative to the Olympics. These differences offer an intriguing contrast to the Olympics and contribute to the unique identity of the World Games.

    • Unique sports in World GamesThe World Games offer a platform for unique and overlooked sports, pushing boundaries with technology and rules, and providing opportunities for all athletes to compete at the highest level, such as wheelchair rugby.

The World Games provide a platform for unique and sometimes overlooked sports and variations of existing ones, offering a revival or a chance to shine for athletes and fans alike. These games challenge the boundaries of traditional sports by incorporating various levels of technology and rules, leading to meaningful differences and unexpected discoveries. The inclusion of wheelchair rugby as an official sport in the 2025 World Games highlights the significance of embracing diversity and providing opportunities for all athletes to compete at the highest level.

    • La Crosse and colonialismLa Crosse, a Native American sport, was co-opted and commercialized, excluding its creators from their own creation, highlighting the complex relationship between sports, culture, and colonialism.

The history of La Crosse, a Native American sport, serves as a poignant reminder of the complex relationship between sports, culture, and colonialism. Originating as a spiritual and community-building game, La Crosse was later co-opted and commercialized, excluding Native Americans from their own creation. Fast forward to the modern era, the World Games presented an opportunity for the Haudenosaunee team to participate, but the question of representation arose. This intriguing tale sheds light on the intricacies of cultural appropriation and the importance of acknowledging and respecting the origins of sports. The story of La Crosse is a powerful reminder that sports hold deep cultural significance and should be approached with sensitivity and respect.

    • World Games impactThe World Games may not have the same level of recognition as the Olympics, but its decisions and opportunities can significantly impact athletes and teams, as shown by the Haudenosaunee National Men's Lacrosse team's inclusion in the Olympics.

The World Games, though often overshadowed by the Olympics, have the power to provide opportunities and recognition to athletes and teams who may not otherwise receive it. This was exemplified by the Haudenosaunee National Men's Lacrosse team, who were initially excluded from the Birmingham World Games but gained support and ultimately competed due to public outcry and the selfless act of the Irish team. Despite the World Games not having the same level of recognition as the Olympics, the impact of its decisions and the opportunities it provides should not be underestimated. The Haudenosaunee team's inclusion in the 2028 Summer Olympic Games is a testament to this. The World Games may be young and different, but it matters and has the ability to make a significant impact.

    • Underrepresented Sports and The World GamesThe World Games provide a platform for underrepresented sports like sumo wrestling, martial arts, and skydiving to gain recognition and recognition beyond their current presence in mainstream events like the Olympics.

There are various underrepresented sports and activities, such as sumo wrestling, martial arts, and skydiving, which hold deep cultural significance and deserve recognition beyond their current limited presence in mainstream events like the Olympics. The World Games, a relatively new set of games, offers a platform for these sports to shine and showcase their unique qualities to the world. The hosts of the podcast, Let's Learn Everything, expressed their excitement about the new sport, "Review Corner," being added to the 2025 World Games and encouraged listeners to explore these lesser-known sports and their rich histories. The podcast episode also touched upon the topic of epigenetics and its various applications and implications.

We also learn about: black holes are massive (mass) but not massive (size), nothing can escape a black hole, supermassive black hole by muse, the closest black hole is 1000 light years away so we don’t need to worry about them too much, matter can’t escape the Plunging Region, does your McDonald also have black holes? stellar evolution, “they’re just big gassy balls doing nuclear fusion”, the fusion in a star pushes against the gravity keeping it in equilibrium, Caroline’s fear of the sun expanding, stellar corpse, a neutron star is just made of neutrons - that can’t be right, if you add too much flour (mass) this will turn into an atomic bomb (black hole), stop saying massive and start saying voluptuous to avoid confusion, one in every thousand stars could be a blac khole, “surely that’s not sustainable” “have I got news for you about the future of all things”, theorizing a black hole in 1783, we only get the word Black Hole in 1964, betting on Signus X1, finding black holes by nearby objects’ bright hot death screams, it took 2 years to process the black hole image, sorry I think it looks like a butthole, Sagitarius A - our galaxies butthole, deslicious spaghettification, we’re all being spaghettified, I’m being raviolified here! where do you go in a black hole? into a topic for another day, “tom saw the topic on me”, no inheritance until you tattoo me onto your butt, Caroline got a tattoo to honor pigeons, the above skin - the skin - and the below skin, phagocytosis, microphages contain and become the tattoo! “the art is your immune system” and we only knew this in 2018, Ötzi the Iceman had 57 tattoos, ella regrets letting us guess what tattoos he had, ritualistic and therapeutic tattoos, egyptian women tattoos, old preserved siberian tattoo, the painted picts, Tattoo comes from the Tahitian word Tatau, famed tattoo afficianado Charles Darwin, the meaning of polynesian tattoos, sailor tattoos were inspired by polynesians but adapted to things meaningful to them, sailor tattoos were like sailing achievements, shark repeller tattoos, ancient greek tattoos were literally “skin-stigmas”, stigma affects culture and culture affects stigma in a feedback loop, “true on all accounts for my case”, gender norms in tattoos,  “ooh another means by which to put down women don’t mind if I do”, biases in the workplace,”it’s literally only skindeep”, tattoos are so personal and human of course you can’t assume or speak to all of them, they’re an art and they’re universal across cultures.
