    About this Episode

For some, technology is a curse.  But, for the church in a changing world, it has been a blessing. The reality is that there are those who cannot or will not enter a church building, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to belong to a loving community.  One of the ways we meet that need is through hybrid ministry. It’s more than streaming. It’s real life, two-way connection that brings people together in meaningful ways. Join co-hosts Kelly Phipps and Blake Smith as well as panelists, James Clark, Carla Long, and Jude Vickery for a look at the types of hybrid ministry models that are finding a place across the church thanks to technology. NOTE: This episode was recorded as part of a live event that took place online on February 5th, 2024.

Physical places have always played an important role in preserving history. Much more important for a church called to Christ’s mission is how we integrate it into our lives, learn from it, and carry it forward by becoming the storytellers that keep it alive. In this episode of Cuppa Joe, Apostle Lach Mackay (also Director of Historic Sites and a direct descendent of Joseph Smith III) sits down with host Karin Peter, to share his own perspective on the recent sale of important historic properties.  He talks about how he is processing the news as well as talks about how he is finding hope for the future ... and how our history will continue to play a vital role in our identity going forward.

691 | Coffee to Go | Fourth Sunday of Lent

This little light of mine ... I’m gonna let it shine! Today we take a break from walking with Jesus, and take a few minutes to talk about him. Why, in fact, did God send the Son to the world? Is it so that a few select people who believe a certain way and act a certain way (at least on Sundays) could get to heaven?  We think not! Join hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith, for a deep look into a passage that includes the infamous “John 3:16,” but does not end there.

ES 116 | Extra Shot | The Need for Lament

Avoidance is a natural human response in difficult times. After all, pain leaves us vulnerable. Avoiding the darker spaces in our lives, however, only serves to keep us from experiencing the sacred spaces that also exist. Grief and loss can be daunting if not stagnating. Join host Robin Linkhart and Community of Christ Director of Spiritual Formation, Katie Harmon-McLaughlin for this very helpful conversation about the power and importance of lament in our life as a vehicle for moving through the hurt and finding hope...individually and in sacred community.

    A34 | Awaken to God's Presence | Continuing Revelation

From its very beginning, Community of Christ has looked to continuing revelation for guidance and direction for the path ahead.  And, we have not been disappointed.  Surprised at times...yes. 690 | Coffee to Go | Third Sunday of Lent

Watch out!  Jesus has arrived at the Temple in Jerusalem, and he’s not happy! On this third Sunday of Lent, hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith spend a little time with Jesus as he starts turning over tables and throwing people out. The outer courts of the Temple are filled with vendors and moneychangers who are taking advantage of those who have come offer their ritual sacrifice to God for Passover, and the ones affected the most are the poor. It’s time to speak up against this (and other) blatant injustice.

689 | Cuppa Joe | Women of the Restoration | Bertha Greer

You don’t have to be a church leader to make church history. Bertha Greer made her mark by using her gifts and vocation as a doctor to serve the church.  In this fascinating conversation with host Karin Peter, historian and cemetery enthusiast, Wendy Eaton, explores not only Bertha’s life and contributions but many of her family as well. You’ll even get introduced to a man or two in this episode of the Women in the Restoration series. And, who knows, there might even be a little scandal hiding in here somewhere.

688 | Coffee to Go | Second Sunday of Lent

As we get closer to Jerusalem, things are heating up, and Peter is beside himself. Things don’t seem to be turning out the way they should. And...what do you mean, “die to self?” Tough words to hear by someone who has already given up everything. Lucky for Peter, and us, dying to self doesn’t refer to a literal death. It’s all about sacrificing our own self-interest for the good of the whole.  And, it’s about following the teachings of Jesus... living like Jesus … not just believing in him. Join hosts Karin and Blake for a look into this brief yet important public exchange between Jesus and Peter.
