A Guide to ChatGPT's Updates - iOS App, Plugins, and Web Browsing

    en-usMay 19, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • AI's Impact on Education and TechnologyNYC Public Schools lift ChatGPT ban, Meta develops own chip, AI transforms learning and communication, stay informed, adapt, ethical use

AI is making its way into various aspects of our lives, including education and technology, despite some initial resistance. The New York City Public Schools lifting the ban on ChatGPT and encouraging its use is a significant step forward in integrating AI into the classroom. Meanwhile, Meta, Facebook's parent company, is developing its own chip, indicating the growing importance of AI in the tech industry. These developments underscore the potential of AI to transform the way we learn and communicate. It's crucial for individuals and organizations to stay informed and adapt to these changes to remain competitive and effective in today's world. Additionally, it's essential to understand the ethical implications of using AI and ensure that it is used responsibly and ethically. Overall, these stories highlight the growing influence of AI and the need for us to embrace it while being mindful of its potential consequences.

    • Meta creating custom chip for AI algorithmsMeta enters chip market, potential chip war, high demand for powerful chips, AI in education, large companies developing custom AI models

Meta is making a significant move into the computing space by creating their own custom hardware chip to accelerate their AI algorithms. This is a first step for Meta beyond their headsets and other hardware, and it could potentially lead to other companies using their chip and a chip war ensues. Additionally, the demand for powerful chips to run generative AI technologies is high, and companies like Meta, Apple, and a few others are now starting to produce their own chips to keep up with the demand. The discussion also touched upon the use of AI in education, with some schools embracing it and Apple reportedly restricting its use among employees due to data leak concerns. Furthermore, many large companies, including Apple, have yet to develop their own internal large language learning systems, which could lead to the creation of custom versions of AI models like ChatGPT trained on their own data.

    • Apple to Release Voice Cloning FeatureApple plans to release a voice cloning feature, enabling users to record and clone their voices, potentially benefiting those with speech impairments or cognitive conditions, but raising concerns about deepfakes and impersonation

While large companies are wary of using ChatGPT due to data privacy concerns, Apple is pushing forward with voice cloning technology. Apple's voice cloning feature, which will allow users to record and clone their voices, is set to be released later this year. The potential benefits include helping those with speech impairments or cognitive conditions. However, there are concerns about the potential misuse of this technology, such as creating deepfakes or impersonating individuals. It's important to note that the full details of Apple's implementation have not been released, and security measures will likely play a crucial role in mitigating potential risks. Overall, the debate around these technologies highlights the need for careful consideration of their benefits and risks.

    • Discussing the performance of ChatGPT's new iOS app and potential voice mimicking risksThe release of ChatGPT's iOS app has sparked excitement and criticism, with some calling it a 'flop'. Concerns have also been raised about the potential risks of voice mimicking technology, including cloning voices and spreading misinformation.

The release of the official ChatGPT iOS app by OpenAI has caused a surge in demand, but the app's performance has been criticized as a "flop" by some. However, the conversation also touched upon the potential risks of voice mimicking technology, which can be used for scams and misinformation. The speaker expressed concern that this technology could be used to clone voices, even locally, and raised the possibility of distributed ledger identity verification as a potential solution. Additionally, the conversation mentioned the recent releases of official apps by Meta and Apple, making for an interesting time in the tech industry. Overall, the discussion highlighted the excitement and potential concerns surrounding the latest advancements in AI technology.

    • Enable advanced features and select ChatGPT 4 model for full ChatGPT capabilities on iPhone app.To access the latest information and advanced features of ChatGPT on the iPhone app, users must enable beta features and choose the ChatGPT 4 model.

To fully utilize the advanced features of ChatGPT on the iPhone app, users need to enable the beta features and specifically select the ChatGPT 4 model. These steps are crucial as the free version and the default GPT 3.5 model are limited to a knowledge cut off of 2021. This means users on the free version or with the default setting may not have access to the most recent information. Additionally, it's important to note that these advanced features don't get enabled by default, and users need to manually enable them. • Enhance ChatGPT with plugins and proper promptingImprove ChatGPT's functionality with plugins and learn effective prompting techniques through the Prime Prompt Polishing course to get the best results.

ChatGPT, a popular AI language model, can be significantly enhanced through the use of plugins and proper prompting techniques. The free Prime Prompt Polishing (PPP) course, available to loyal listeners, teaches the importance of priming and prompting correctly to get the best results from ChatGPT. Plugins, which are third-party applications, expand ChatGPT's functionality by allowing it to interact with other services. For instance, you can make reservations on OpenTable directly through ChatGPT if you have the OpenTable plugin enabled. However, you can only have three plugins enabled at once, and you need to install them individually. Additionally, ChatGPT will suggest which plugin to use based on your query. So, while browsing and plugins are not mutually exclusive, you can't use them simultaneously within the ChatGPT interface. Overall, these strategies can help make ChatGPT a more effective and versatile tool for various tasks.

    • Limited functionality in ChatGPT iOS appThe ChatGPT iOS app lacks browsing capabilities and access to plugins, limiting its usefulness for up-to-date information, even for paid subscribers.

While the ChatGPT iOS app functions well and is fast, its lack of access to plugins and browsing capabilities significantly limits its usefulness, even for paid subscribers. This was evident when I asked the app about recent stock market events and received an outdated response. In contrast, using ChatGPT in a mobile browser allowed me to access up-to-date information through plugins. It's surprising that this limitation exists, especially since there have been other ChatGPT apps that have successfully implemented browsing and plugin capabilities. Overall, while the iOS app is a step in the right direction, it falls short of providing the full ChatGPT experience. If you need the most comprehensive and current information from ChatGPT on your iPhone, consider using it in your mobile browser instead.

    • Consider using mobile Safari for ChatGPT instead of the appFor a better user experience, use ChatGPT on mobile Safari instead of the app, and stay updated with AI news for valuable insights and time-saving tips by signing up for our newsletter.

While ChatGPT has released a mobile app, there are already several similar apps available in the market that have been successful, making significant revenue since their release. Instead of using the ChatGPT app, it's recommended to use it on mobile Safari for a better user experience. Our team invests over 100 hours a month researching AI to provide valuable insights and time-saving tips like this. AI Podcast 2.0: The host in the machine
In Part 1 of this series, AI proved that it could use real research and real interviews to write an original script for an episode of Planet Money. Our next task was to teach the computer how to sound like us. How to read that script aloud like a Planet Money host.

On today's show, we explore the world of AI-generated voices, which have become so lifelike in recent years that they can credibly imitate specific people. To test the limits of the technology, we attempt to create our own synthetic voice by training a computer on recordings of former Planet Money host Robert Smith. Then we introduce synthetic Robert to his very human namesake.

There are a lot of ethical, and economic, questions raised by a technology that can duplicate anyone's voice. To help us make sense of it all, we seek the advice of an artist who has embraced AI voice clones: the musician Grimes.

This episode was produced by Emma Peaslee and Willa Rubin, with help from Sam Yellowhorse Kesler. It was edited by Keith Romer and fact-checked by Sierra Juarez. Engineering by James Willetts. Jess Jiang is our acting executive producer.

Using artificial intelligence in early years

Using artificial intelligence in early years

Where is AI's place in early years?...Joshua Barr and Angelica Celinska critically discuss the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in early years, specifically for observing children. They question whether AI can act as the 3rd teacher in the classroom, and also as a digital colleague for educators.

The discussion centres around the opportunities of AI, many of which are still untapped in education, but also the need to use AI as an aid to teaching, rather than replacing the teacher - AI is a great addition to teaching, but we must view AI through a critical lens.

Joshua and Angelica further discuss the scripted vs the unscripted classroom - likening AI to educational frameworks.

    Episode breakdown:
