    In honor of Women's History Month, Julie Butters performs "Ahead of Their Time: Inspiring Women of Literature." In this collection of dramatic readings, Julie brings to life some of classic literature's most exciting leading ladies, along with several historical women who created brilliant works in defense of their gender including Lysistrata, Joan of Arc, Anna E. Dickinson ("America's Joan of Arc"), Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, Louisa May Alcott, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christine de Pizan, and more. 

    Julie Butters is a Salem-based actress and writer, a cantor at St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott and St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Nahant, and an aide at the Swampscott Public Library. A graduate of Harvard University, where she co-chaired the Hyperion Shakespeare Company, Julie has portrayed many inspiring women, including Julian of Norwich, Jo March, and Jane Eyre.

    Julie Butters is a Salem-based actress and writer. The former co-chair of Harvard University's Hyperion Shakespeare Company, she has performed roles ranging from Juliet to Lady Macbeth. Her website is juliebutters.com.

    Bryan Butters is a longtime history teacher at Marblehead High School. He has performed Shakespeare with his wife, Julie Butters, in virtual productions as well as live at the Swampscott Public Library's 2023 Shakespeare Birthday Party.

In this collection of dramatic readings, Julie brings to life some of classic literature's most exciting leading ladies, along with several historical women who created brilliant works in defense of their gender including Lysistrata, Joan of Arc, Anna E. Dickinson ("America's Joan of Arc"), Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, Louisa May Alcott, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christine de Pizan, and more.

    Rod Kessler taught creative writing at Salem State University for 31 years.  He is an author of short fiction, was an advisor to Sextant, a literary journal, and he has long been the champion of Malcolm Miller.

    Happy Birthday, Edgar Allen Poe! Ken Grout reads Poe poems w Agatha Morrell 12-28-2022

    Happy Birthday, Edgar Allen Poe! Presenter Ken Grout talks with Agatha Morrell about the life, love, and literature of one of America's most iconic authors.

    Poe was born January 19, 1809, in Boston, MA, and died October 7, 1849 (aged 40) in Baltimore, MD. His most famous works are poems “To Helen” (1831), “The Raven” (1845), and “Annabel Lee” (1849); the short stories of wickedness and crime “The Tell-Tale Heart” (1843) and “The Cask of Amontillado” (1846); and the supernatural horror story “The Fall of the House of Usher” (1839) and "Murders at the Rue Morgue" (1841) which is said to have "initiated the modern detective story".

    Ken Grout is a professor and writer who teaches and works with the art of oral presentation of literature. He was recently selected as an auditor by the Chautauqua Training Institute and is currently working on presentational material relating to both Oscar Wilde and Edgar Allan Poe.

    Ken is a full-time faculty member in the Communication Studies Department at Emerson College in Boston, where he teaches Introduction to Speech Communication and Oral Presentation of Literature.

    is Professor Emerita at Salem State University. She currently teaches for the Salem State Explorers, a lifelong learning program and leads a Poetry Salon at the Abbot Public Library in Marblehead.  Claire has won many awards for her poetry.  She will be talking about her latest book One Port  and reading us a few poems from it.
