    • Emphasizing community connections for positive changeBuilding strong community bonds can prepare us for unexpected events and create meaningful social support. Efforts like Neighbor to Neighbor and advocacy for changing the narrative around policing highlight the power of community and addressing systemic issues to create a more just society.

Building strong community connections can bring about positive change and help prepare us for unexpected events. Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteer network, emphasizes the importance of relying on the people around us to create meaningful social bonds and support each other. Meanwhile, Alec Karagatsanes, a former public defender, advocates for changing the narrative around policing in America by challenging mainstream media outlets to reconsider their approach. Both Neighbor to Neighbor and Alec's work highlight the power of community and the importance of addressing systemic issues to create a more just and connected society.

    • Propaganda shapes our perception of safety in societyPropaganda focuses our attention on certain threats while ignoring others, like wage theft, and societal issues are the real causes of harm

Propaganda plays a significant role in shaping our perception of safety in society. It often focuses our attention on certain threats while ignoring others, such as wage theft, which costs much more than all forms of robbery and shoplifting combined. This disconnect is due in part to the selective enforcement of laws by law enforcement agencies. While many agree that regulation of law enforcement is necessary, there are also communities that still require protection. However, a better world might not adhere to the current notions of law enforcement. Instead, addressing the root causes of violence and harm in society, rather than just increasing police presence, should be our priority. The number one cause of harm is not a lack of policing, but rather the societal issues that lead to violence and harm. The United States, with its high police presence, prisons, prosecutions, courts, judges, probation, and parole, should focus on addressing these root causes instead.

    • Transitioning to long-term solutions for societal safetyEffective interim solutions like permanent supportive housing, safe consumption sites, violence interruption, restorative justice, and community-building initiatives maintain safety during the transition to long-term societal changes. Addressing mass incarceration and providing resources for those unable to afford bail are crucial interim steps.

Investing in long-term solutions like reducing poverty, providing safe housing, and improving healthcare and public health are crucial for societal safety. However, during the transition period, it's essential to find interim solutions to maintain safety while moving towards a new system. The evidence shows that programs like permanent supportive housing, safe consumption sites, violence interruption, restorative justice, and community-building initiatives are effective in the short and medium term. The challenge lies in gaining the political power to implement these solutions. Addressing the issue of mass incarceration and providing resources for those unable to afford bail is an identified injustice that requires immediate attention. While we work towards systemic change, it's crucial to acknowledge the importance of both long-term and interim solutions to ensure public safety.

    • Establishment liberal reforms may perpetuate issuesReporting on solvable public health and safety issues can drive progress towards a healthier and more equitable society.

The reforms proposed by some establishment liberals may not be the solution to the current problems, as they are often backed by the same interests that created the issues in the first place. A clear example of this is the proposed replacement of the cash bail system with privatized, for-profit electronic monitoring, which while intended to address issues of presumption of innocence and family separation, actually perpetuates mass detention and generates enormous profits. To bring about real change, the media could focus on reporting on and raising awareness about issues that directly threaten public health and safety, such as the 100,000 annual violations of the Clean Water Act and the tens of thousands of deaths caused by air pollution. By shedding light on these solvable problems, the media can help present a clearer vision of where America should be and drive progress towards a healthier and more equitable society.

    • Media coverage of crime can distract from larger societal issuesPoliticians and media should present viable solutions beyond policing and provide comprehensive coverage of community-building initiatives to inform the public and lead to effective policy decisions.

While there are important issues beyond crime that require urgent attention, the public's focus on crime and their perception of politicians' responses to it can significantly impact elections. The speaker argues that the media's coverage of crime, often focusing on isolated incidents, can distract from larger threats to society and divert resources from community-building initiatives. However, she acknowledges that many voters lack access to information about these alternatives and may feel that only policing can address their concerns. The speaker emphasizes the need for political leaders to present viable solutions beyond policing and for the media to provide more comprehensive coverage of issues that matter to communities. Ultimately, a more informed public could lead to more effective policy decisions and a greater focus on long-term solutions.

Jason Citron - Building the Third Place - [Founder’s Field Guide, EP.4]
My guest today is Jason Citron, founder and CEO of Discord. Discord is one of the largest and fastest growing social networks in the world. It started as a place for gamers to congregate online, but thanks to how easy it makes it to create a community of any type and its offering of text, audio, and video as means of communication, it has expanded far beyond gaming. It has the potential to become the default digital “third place” that we go to find belonging in a variety of online communities. With over 100 million users, it’s also one of the most interesting communications service businesses since the original social networks rose to power. Our conversation focuses on his background prior to Discord, Discord’s founding and growth, its business model and how it has evolved over the past 8 years, and what the future holds for Discord. As we talked, I had this sense that I’d be willing to go work for Jason, and I think you’ll see why. I hope you enjoy our wide ranging conversation.   This episode is brought to you by Microsoft for Startups.
