    About this Episode

Anne Midgette was for 11 years the classical music critic of The Washington Post, where she expanded her beat with a strong social-media presence and became known for her work on #MeToo. Before the Post, she spent seven years as a regular contributor of classical music and theater reviews to the New York Times, having earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first woman to review classical music regularly for that paper in 2001. She has also written frequently for The Wall Street Journal, Opera News, The Los Angeles Times, Town & Country, and many other publications. A graduate of Yale University, she started her career as a journalist during the 11 years she lived in Germany, where she wrote about the visual arts, opera, film, and dance, worked as a translator, edited a monthly magazine, and wrote several travel guidebooks. The co-author of The King and I, a candid book about Luciano Pavarotti written with his long-time manager, Herbert Breslin (2004), and of My Nine Lives, the memoir of the pianist Leon Fleisher (2010), she is currently working on a historical novel about the woman who built pianos for Beethoven.

In this talk Anne Midgette generously shares the vivid experience of the responsibilities of being a critic, and her thoughts about the current state of classical music in the light of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.

AUBREY BERGAUER: Balancing the Challenges & Chaos of Covid in New Modes for Classical Music

AUBREY BERGAUER: Balancing the Challenges & Chaos of Covid in New Modes for Classical Music

Aubrey Bergauer (U.S.A.) defies trends and then makes her own. Hailed by San Francisco Chronicle as a “dynamic and innovative administrator,” her focus on not just engaging—but retaining—new audiences grew Seattle Opera’s BRAVO! Club to the largest group for young patrons in the nation, led the Bumbershoot Festival to achieve an unprecedented 43% increase in revenue, and propelled the California Symphony to double the size of its audience and nearly quadruple the donor base.

Praised by Wall Street Journal for leadership which “points the way to a new style of audience outreach,” and which drove the California Symphony to become “the most forward-looking music organization around” (San Jose Mercury News), Bergauer’s ability to strategically and holistically examine and advance every facet of the organization, instilling and achieving common goals and vision across what are usually siloed marketing, development, and artistic departments creates a transformational change in the audience, in the office, on the stage, and in the community.

A graduate of Rice University with degrees in Music Performance and Business, classical music is Bergauer’s vehicle to make the world around her better, through programs that champion social justice and equality, through marketing and audience development tactics on the forefront of trends and technology, and through delivering revenue and results in the rapidly changing landscape of funding, philanthropy, and consumer behavior. Bergauer shares these ideas in her consulting work and in speaking engagements across North America, including conferences for Adobe’s Magento, TEDx, Blackbaud, Capacity Interactive, Opera America, Orchestras Canada, and the League of American Orchestras.

BO LUTOSLAWSKI: Catching Souls & Giving Them Back as Timeless Portraits

BO LUTOSLAWSKI: Catching Souls & Giving Them Back as Timeless Portraits

Bo Lutoslawski (Poland / UK) over the past 40 years has photographed many of the greatest figures in the arts in Europe, spanning the worlds of music, literature, dance and theatre.

Arriving in London from his native Poland in 1980, he was immediately absorbed into the capital’s fast-moving cultural scene, taking portraits of the likes of Glenda Jackson, Tom Stoppard, Bill Brandt, Philip King, Ernst Gombrich, Peter Hall, Tambimuttu, George Martin, Marina Warner,  Claes Oldenburg, Lucy Burge, Paloma Picasso, Helaine Blumenfeld, Richard Rogers, John Peel, Anthony Caro, Simon Callow, James Bonas on assignments for Vogue, The Independent, Newsweek, The Illustrated London News, BBC and Harper’s & Queen among others.

His work, however, is not constrained by time or place. And it has absolutely nothing to do with fashion. Instead, it results from a moment of special affinity, a kind of spiritual kinship, between two different personalities – the photographer and sitter.

Max Wykes-Jones in Arts Review said of Bo’s work, “Powerfully baroque and quintessentially Polish photographic images ….”

“For Bo Lutoslawski taking a portrait is like falling in love. His technique is near-telepathic inside into his subject, the way they move, the way they think - a fleeting attempt to catch their true identity. He never asks anyone to smile; and to his delight, they often do.” Sophie Grove, journalist

GITANJALI KOLANAD: Following the Dance: The Forgiving Nature of Creativity in Gurus, Gardens & Baking

GITANJALI KOLANAD: Following the Dance: The Forgiving Nature of Creativity in Gurus, Gardens & Baking

Gitanjali Kolanad (Toronto) has been involved in the practice, performance, and teaching of bharatanatyam for close to forty years, performing in major cities in Europe, America and India with performances that uniquely incorporate folk and ritual forms of dance, theatre and martial art forms from South India.

Her short story collection “Sleeping with Movie Stars” was published in January 2011 by Penguin India, and she has written numerous articles on aspects of Indian dance for well-known Indian publications, India Magazine, Sruti and The Arts House.

In 2016 she was the Singapore International Writer in Residence National University of Singapore, and at Shiv Nadar University she was part of developing their performing arts program.

A previous book of hers “Culture Shock: India” published by Marshall Cavendish, is now into its third edition, and has been translated into Korean.

As a co-founder of IMPACT - Indian Martial and Performance Arts Collective of Toronto, she teaches the Indian martial art form of kalaripayat to at-risk youth.

Her work has often been multi-disciplinary, arising out of collaborations with artists from other disciplines: director Phillip Zarrilli, video/installation artist Ray Langenbach, poet Judith Kroll, and violinist Parmela Attariwala, to name a few.

In particular her long time collaboration with US theatre director Phillip Zarrilli, who was both a leading practitioner and scholar of Indian performance styles, led to innovative performances such as the solo dance piece “Walking Naked” which was an enigmatic performance piece which dealt with the life and poetry of the 12th century Karnataka poet-saint Mahadeviyakka.

Mahadevi was a poet who was said to have run away from her arranged marriage in order to remain a devotee of Siva. Discovered "walking naked" by a community of Siva devotees, the story went that on her wedding night when her husband grabbed hold of her sari she kept walking, leaving it unwind as she walked.

This unfathomable life of spiritual dedication met equally inspired staging and a long process of detailed investigation with Zarrilli that led to the use of three different puppets, each of which had a transformational journey enacted by Kolanad.

Her most recent work "Girl Made of Gold" is a novel set as a murder mystery and taking place around the figure of a devadasi - the female dance artist who were dedicated to worship and serve a deity or a temple in a ceremony similar to a marriage one. Historically these women took care of the temple and performed the rituals dances from a practice of classical Indian artistic traditions such as Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Odissi.

Kolanad walks an unique line where she delicately balances the role of both the dancer, the danced and the dancing as she embodies the role of not only the dancer but of someone able to articulate her practice from a variety of perspectives. In this capacity she is in the process of writing a non fiction book about dance.

TENE EDWARDS: Love, Law, Bad decisions and Poetry

TENE EDWARDS: Love, Law, Bad decisions and Poetry

Tene Edwards (UK) is an Authorpreneur, Self-Love Advocate, Poet. Mental Health and Wellbeing Thought Leader and a writer featured in Forbes.

From Luton, to the North of London, she has described how, “Writing became my healing tool when I hit rock bottom. I was dumped by a guy I wasn’t even in a relationship with - but had strong feelings for - and my degree in Law no longer excited me. My career was in shambles. In fact, my whole life was in shambles…But life completely changed when I began to journal my thoughts and feelings.”

Tene Edwards runs self-love events and workshops to help others cultivate a more supportive and loving relationship with themselves and to empower others to recognise and trust their own inner voice.

As an author, she is in the very new phenomena of an amazingly large following on social media with a variety of people supporting her art such as Khloe Kardashian, actor Wesley Snipes, Kandi Burruss and Dascha Polanco from Orange is The New Black - all sharing her words, allowing her to reach a total audience of 109.6 million.

Her first poetry book “Walk With Wings” is a #1 Bestselling Book on Amazons and a compilation of reflections on her experiences, thoughts, and feelings through love, loss, pain, healing and resilience which her audience of mostly 18 - 35 year olds have found meaning and inspiration. The collection takes the reader through the life story of the author whilst offering advice, notes, and affirmations, which were written to empower the author during difficult times.

Falling in love, making bad decisions, learning from her mistakes, and discovering how to love her life and herself are Tene Edward’s themes. She takes this knowledge into workshops that she delivers through the S.E.E.D Project which she set up with colleague Maxine Wynter (a qualified Social Worker and Stress Relief Coach), where they work with young people to help them strive for more so that too can let out their voice and have the feeling that Edwards describes as the “feeling of bricks being lifted of your shoulders.”
