Autism Live Parent to Parent: ABA Basics

Autism Live Parent to Parent: ABA Basics

Shannon Penrod, author of Autism: Parent to Parent, gives a basic, but thorough talk about what ABA is, especially when used to treat autism. This is a talk that is geared toward parents but is also ideal for individuals who are on the spectrum and have heard negative things about ABA, to decern what is the intent and practice of ABA. When armed with this knowledge people can easily spot situations in which people are claiming to do ABA, but instead are doing something that is harmful or potentially harmful. We can all agree that individuals on the spectrum have a right to be considered and heard, their sensory issues have to be taken into consideration when teaching them, but they are entitled to learn, like all other people on the planet.

    Autism Live 1.22.24: Visit Anaheim

Shannon is joined by Emmy Award-Winning journalist Gabriela Teissier and Sue O’Shea the Senior Director of Marketing at Visit Anaheim.

Visit Anaheim has taken the unprecedented step to become a Certified Autism Center™ (CAC), which is a designation granted by the International Board of Credentialling and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). IBCCES awards this credential to organizations whose staff have completed specialized training and a certification process to better understand and assist autistic and sensory-sensitive visitors and their families.  Visit Anaheim’s designation as a Certified Autism Center signifies the organization's commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. Ensuring that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can experience the magic of the destination is a top priority for the organization. The Visit Anaheim team completing the CAC program is the first step in Visit Anaheim’s initiative to make Anaheim the next Certified Autism Destination™ (CAD), which means visitors have multiple trained and certified options to choose from when in the area, including entertainment, recreation and hospitality options. Visit Anaheim has partnered with IBCCES to involve key tourism, hospitality, and recreation organizations in the community to complete autism training and certification, helping earn the community designation to attract new visitors to the area and better serve residents.

On February 14th Visit Anaheim will host a ReConnect Event: Autism and Sensory Needs Certification from 3-8pm at the Great Wolf Lodge.  This event will help local businesses and attractions gain information about including and supporting individuals on the spectrum and their families as well as gaining certification. Gabriela Teissier will be the guest speaker for the event.  Teisseir serves on the board of directors of Autism Care Today!  Email kgrass@visitanaheim.org for more information. #visitanaheim #CertifiedAutismCenter
