    Podcast Summary

    • Optimize behavior for others, not selfAcknowledge biases, increase behavioral awareness to read nonverbal cues correctly, focus on others for effective communication and stronger relationships

Effective communication and building strong relationships rely on putting others first and being aware of nonverbal cues. Blake Eastman, an expert in nonverbal behavior, emphasizes the importance of optimizing our behavior for the people around us rather than focusing on ourselves. He suggests acknowledging our biases and increasing our behavioral awareness to notice and understand the meaning behind nonverbal cues. Misinterpreting these cues can lead to misunderstandings and strained relationships. By focusing on others and being mindful of our nonverbal communication, we can improve our ability to read and respond appropriately, leading to better communication and stronger connections.

    • Understanding unique communication styles to build trustAdapt to others' communication styles to build trust, bringing up unique topics and demonstrating genuine interest.

Building trust with others, whether in person or through virtual means like Zoom, requires an understanding of both verbal and nonverbal cues. People have unique perceptual lenses for what trustworthy behaviors are, and it's essential to be aware of individual differences in communication styles. Some people may over-contextualize or misinterpret tone, while others may be literal in their understanding. To build trust, aim for nuanced conversations that are three standard deviations to the right of the bell curve. This means bringing up topics that are unique and interesting to the other person, and demonstrating genuine interest through your behavior. Trust is not a simple step-by-step process, but rather a complex puzzle that requires empathy, self-awareness, and an open mind. To form trust with someone, take the time to understand their unique communication style and adapt to it, rather than being outside the bell curve distribution of how they typically act.

    • The Bayesian Brain and Its Impact on PerceptionOur brains form opinions and stick to them, leading to cognitive biases. Being shown we're wrong can challenge perceptions and promote growth. Detecting lies is complex, especially in forensic settings, and it's important to consider individual contexts to assess danger.

Our brains have a tendency to form opinions and stick to them, making it difficult to change perceptions of ourselves and others. This phenomenon, known as the Bayesian brain, can lead to cognitive biases and decision-making errors. However, being shown we are wrong can help challenge our perceptions and promote self-growth. People lie for various reasons, and detecting lies can be a complex process, especially in forensic settings where personality tests and nonverbal cues are used. The most dangerous individuals are those who have lost touch with reality and exhibit erratic, violent behavior. The biggest talkers are not necessarily the most dangerous, and it's important to approach each person with an open mind and consider their unique context.

    • Understanding People's Actions in Challenging SituationsBe aware of individual differences in reactions, avoid hasty judgments, be mindful of cultural assumptions, and approach situations with an open mind.

People's behaviors and actions, especially in challenging situations, can be shaped by their experiences, context, and perspective. Some individuals may react erratically or aggressively when their ego or respect is threatened, while others may remain calm and composed. It's crucial to be aware of these differences and to avoid making hasty judgments based on one's worst choices or actions. Additionally, trust can be easily broken and hard to rebuild, and individuals may try to hide their true intentions or actions. It's essential to be mindful of cultural narratives and assumptions and to approach each situation with an open mind and a willingness to understand different perspectives. The speaker's experience of being able to sense someone's infidelity on a first meeting is an example of how one's instincts and observations can be valuable, but it's also important to remember that not everyone's intentions are malicious.

    • Communicating effectively in relationshipsRecognize the importance of positive communication, negotiate differences, and engage in meaningful conversations to strengthen relationships. Be aware of transactional communication patterns and work to improve them.

Effective communication and shared understanding are crucial in maintaining a healthy and long-lasting relationship. The dynamic of complaining about one's partner can easily turn into a negative narrative, but shifting the conversation to focus on the positive aspects of the relationship can help prevent this. However, it's important to recognize that every couple has a unique definition of what a relationship should look like, and negotiation and compromise are necessary when differences arise. A red flag for potential relationship issues is when partners only communicate transactionally, focusing on day-to-day tasks rather than engaging in meaningful conversation with each other. Being aware of these patterns and actively working to improve communication can help strengthen the bond between partners. Video recordings can also provide valuable insights into relationship dynamics, allowing couples to observe their interactions and identify areas for improvement.

    • Gaining insights through video feedbackVideo feedback allows us to adjust our approach and better engage audiences by revealing instant insights into what works and what doesn't.

Video feedback is an invaluable tool for improving presentations and communication. By recording both the presenter and the audience, we can gain instant insights into what works and what doesn't, allowing us to adjust our approach and better engage our audience. The comedian's use of instant feedback as a tool for refining their material is an effective analogy. When teaching psychology at CUNY, the speaker found that constant audience interaction provided an essential feedback loop for refining their stories and understanding audience reactions. However, most people are not present enough during their presentations to effectively utilize this feedback. To become an expert presenter, one must first focus on building comfort and confidence on stage, and then build upon that foundation. The biggest obstacle to effective presentations is the cultural narrative that they are something different and more formal than everyday communication. Additionally, consistent practice and repetition are crucial for mastering the art of presenting.

    • Navigating power structures in the workplaceEmpathize with audience, avoid self-focus, map out scenarios, have open conversations, understand misperceptions and cultural differences, practice active listening, ask questions, and be aware of impact on others for effective communication and productive work environments

Understanding power structures and social dynamics in the workplace is crucial for effective communication and navigating organizational challenges. The speaker emphasizes the importance of empathizing with the audience during presentations and avoiding self-focused behavior. He also suggests mapping out potential scenarios and having open conversations to gain insights into power structures. The speaker notes that misperceptions and cultural differences can influence how we interact with others and impact our ability to work together. He encourages active listening, asking questions, and being aware of the impact of our own behavior on others. Ultimately, the ability to read the room and navigate power structures can lead to better decision-making and more productive work environments.

    • Effective communication and feedback in a professional settingEncourage self-reflection, adapt to different communication styles, use technology to bridge gaps, and create a narrative true to individual perspective and values.

Effective communication and feedback, especially in a professional setting, can be a complex puzzle due to the different ways people perceive and process information. Some people may come across as harsh or insensitive when giving feedback, while others may not realize the impact of their words. The use of technology like video conferencing can help bridge this gap by providing a clearer understanding of body language and tone. Additionally, encouraging self-reflection through exercises like the "Ebenezer exercise" can help individuals align their behavior with their desired outcomes and values. Effective communication also involves understanding different communication styles and adapting to them, rather than expecting everyone to conform to one way of communicating. Ultimately, the goal is to create a narrative that is true to each individual's unique perspective and values, rather than allowing others to define it for them.

    • Improve nonverbal communication through self-recording and seeking feedbackRecord yourself to analyze nonverbal cues, align intent with behaviors, and seek feedback from others to enhance professional communication.

Effective communication goes beyond just the words we speak or write. Nonverbal cues, such as body language and tone, play a significant role in how our messages are received. This is especially important in professional settings, where there may be unspoken norms or expectations. To improve our nonverbal communication, it's recommended to record and analyze videos of ourselves interacting, focusing on aligning our intent with our behaviors. If video recording isn't an option, recording interactions with a trusted friend or loved one can also be helpful. It's also important to remember that nonverbal communication and verbal communication are interconnected, and understanding the full context is crucial for accurately interpreting behaviors. Additionally, seeking feedback from others through questions or evaluations of our emails can provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of our communication.

    • Understanding team dynamics requires predictive questioning and environmental optimizationEffective communication and leadership necessitate asking insightful questions, adjusting environments, and recognizing the impact of individual actions.

Effective communication and understanding of team dynamics requires a deep understanding of the context and environment in which behavior occurs. Leaders and executives face unique challenges that can make self-improvement more complex than theoretical advice suggests. To gain valuable insights, it's essential to ask predictive questions that allow individuals to conceptualize their responses, such as assessing the likelihood of inviting someone to dinner with friends. Changing the environment, including organizational structures and individual practices, can help optimize behavior and improve communication. For instance, simple adjustments like face-to-face one-on-one sessions can make a significant difference in making team members feel heard and understood. However, it's important to remember that not all behavior is entirely contextual or environmental, and individual actions can also impact behavior. Overall, effective communication and leadership require a thoughtful and nuanced approach that considers the unique challenges and contexts of each situation.

    • Effective communication requires piercing eye contact, warmth, range in tonality, and humilityMastering eye contact, warmth, tonality, and humility builds trust and engages audiences. Be cautious of confidence without knowledge and admit mistakes to build credibility.

Effective communication involves a combination of factors, including piercing eye contact, warm intensity, range in tonality, and the ability to admit when one is wrong. Bill Clinton is an example of a communicator who mastered these skills, making people feel important and engaged. However, it's essential to be cautious when evaluating others' competence based on their confidence and tone, as some may lack actual knowledge or expertise. Humility and admitting mistakes are valuable traits that can build trust and credibility. Additionally, research suggests that speaking at an average pace or even talking faster can make people seem more competent, but it's crucial to ensure the content is valid. Ultimately, effective communication is a multifaceted skill that requires a balance of various elements.

    • Understanding human desire to be liked and acceptedBeing aware of the human desire to be liked and accepted can help us approach interactions with a critical yet open-minded perspective, recognizing everyone's strengths and weaknesses.

The ability to adapt and show humility in the face of new information is a key characteristic of an expert. However, identifying incompetence or deception can be challenging, especially in complex situations like dating or business. People may mask their base level of incompetence or even deceive intentionally to fit in and be perceived positively. This desire to be liked and accepted is an innate biological function that has been with us for thousands of years. The world is becoming increasingly complex, and it's important to remember that our focus on superficial things like clothing or social media can distract us from what truly matters. Ultimately, it's essential to approach interactions with a critical yet open-minded perspective, recognizing that everyone has strengths and weaknesses. While it may not be possible to predict deception with certainty, being aware of these dynamics can help us navigate social situations more effectively.

    • Focus on present moment connectionsPrioritize authentic connections and focus on the present moment in relationships, whether personal or professional.

In our interactions with others, whether it be in personal relationships or professional settings, it's essential to focus on the present moment and genuinely connect with the other person, rather than overthinking and analyzing past or future interactions. The speaker shared his struggle with this in the context of video content, but this concept applies to all areas of life. In dating, for instance, it's crucial to understand what we truly want in a partner and focus on deeper connections rather than superficial traits. The speaker also emphasized the importance of self-reflection and figuring out what makes us happy and fulfilled in a relationship. Overall, the key takeaway is to prioritize authentic connections and focus on the present moment in our interactions with others.

    • Awkward experiences lead to deep connectionsUnderstanding cultural differences and focusing on others can help build stronger connections and foster empathy

Authenticity and connection are key in dating and interactions with others. During a study on dates, it was discovered that the most memorable and deep connections were made during awkward or unusual experiences. People often project their biases onto others based on superficial factors, so it's essential to tell stories and connect on a deeper level. Nonverbal communication styles vary across cultures, and understanding these differences can help us navigate social situations more effectively. Instead of focusing on ourselves, try observing and considering the experiences of those around us. By being aware of the world happening around us and making our behavior about others, we can build stronger connections and foster a more empathetic and understanding society.

    • Optimizing behavior for others' benefitEffective communication and well-liked individuals prioritize others' needs, leading to positive outcomes and personal growth. Leadership means taking initiative and continuous improvement leads to cost savings and efficiency.

Optimizing our behavior towards benefiting others around us can lead to positive outcomes and personal growth. This approach, often practiced by effective communicators and well-liked individuals, involves putting others' needs before our own and acting sincerely. Leadership, according to this perspective, means taking the initiative and leading by example, rather than waiting for recognition or validation. Additionally, adopting a mindset of continuous improvement, as exemplified by John D. Rockefeller, can lead to significant cost savings and increased efficiency in various aspects of life. By questioning the status quo and seeking ways to optimize processes, we can make a positive impact on ourselves and those around us.

    • Engaging with text and highlighting key insightsEffectively learn by actively engaging with text, highlighting key insights, remembering sources, and using technology to enhance the process.

Effective learning involves actively engaging with text and highlighting key insights. This was a practice the speaker learned in graduate school, where they were required to read several books and highlight five passages from each that held personal significance. The speaker now applies this method using digital tools like Kindle and Notion, and colors their highlights to denote different categories. Additionally, the speaker emphasizes the importance of remembering sources and using AI, like ChatGPT, to efficiently research new subjects and understand complex theories. The speaker's workflow includes identifying the main areas of conflict within a field and looking for primary sources to gain a deeper understanding. Overall, the speaker values the importance of actively engaging with text, remembering sources, and using technology to enhance the learning process.

    • Revolutionizing Nonverbal Behavior Analysis with AIAI processes nonverbal behavior data more accurately and efficiently than traditional methods, leading to new possibilities in understanding human behavior and predicting social challenges. Embrace individuality and address behavioral blind spots to unlock potential.

AI is revolutionizing the field of nonverbal behavior analysis by providing more accurate and efficient data processing compared to traditional methods. The speaker shared his experience of using AI for behavioral coding, which was once a labor-intensive process involving manual counting of blinks and other micro-expressions. Now, machines can process this data in real-time with incredible accuracy, leading to new possibilities in understanding human behavior. Moreover, the speaker is using AI to develop inventories and scales to predict and identify social challenges, such as recognizing emotional responses that may be outside of societal norms. He emphasized that the goal is not to judge individuals but to help them understand their behavior from a perception standpoint. Furthermore, the speaker highlighted the importance of recognizing and valuing individuals who operate outside the societal norms, as they often contribute significantly to societal progress. He encouraged embracing individuality and addressing behavioral blind spots to unlock one's full potential. Lastly, the speaker's work in behavioral robotics aims to teach machines to read human behavior, ultimately leading to more advanced AI systems capable of understanding complex human emotions and responses.

    • Understanding Norms Before Breaking ThemAuthentic self-expression, staying within the bell curve, using tools for growth, and hiring coaches for better thinking can lead to charisma and success.

Being authentic and understanding the norms before breaking them can lead to charisma and success. The speaker emphasizes the importance of self-expression and pushing the boundaries while staying on the right side of the bell curve. They also highlight the power of using tools like ChatGPT for building inventories and learning from experts like coaches to achieve personal growth and development. The speaker values coaches who challenge them, hold them accountable, and live in alignment with their values. By hiring coaches, they can access better quality thinking and minimize the suffering in their journey towards achieving their objectives.

    • Impact of a coach or mentor on personal growthComparing oneself to peers can hinder academic success, but a shift in identity and commitment to education, along with valuable lessons about research and data manipulation, can lead to growth. Understanding systemic issues in educational institutions and seeking guidance are essential for optimizing personal growth and success.

Having a coach or mentor can significantly impact personal growth, especially during formative years. The speaker shares his experience of feeling like a failure in his early academic years due to comparing himself to peers. However, an identity shift and a serious commitment to education led him to excel academically. He also learned valuable lessons about research and data manipulation, which influenced his career path. Another insight gained from his experience was the importance of understanding the systemic issues in educational institutions and organizations, where metrics and grades can drive unintended behaviors. Overall, the speaker emphasizes the importance of self-reflection, critical thinking, and seeking guidance to optimize personal growth and success.

    • The Power of Asking Better Questions and WritingEffective questioning and writing are vital for personal growth and clear communication. Learn from others' improvement and context to ask better questions, and use writing as a tool for self-reflection, idea development, and critical thinking.

The ability to ask effective questions and reflect through writing are crucial for personal growth and communication. The speaker emphasizes the importance of learning from others' improvement and context in asking better questions. He also advocates for the power of writing as a tool for self-reflection, idea development, and critical thinking. Writing allows us to examine our thoughts, discover what we don't know, and convey our ideas clearly to others. The speaker prefers pen and paper for the writing process and values the feedback from others in refining and improving his ideas. Overall, the speaker encourages the practice of asking better questions and writing regularly as essential skills for personal and professional development.

    • Documenting personal experiences for growth and authenticityHonestly document experiences for self-insight, define personal success, and believe in one's ability to create something.

Maintaining an honest and authentic record of experiences, whether through journaling or video recording, can provide valuable insights and help entrepreneurs navigate through challenging times. However, it's important to be aware of the potential for self-deception and to strive for authenticity. Success is a personal journey and it's essential to define what it means for oneself, rather than playing someone else's game. Elon Musk's ability to inspire belief in his vision, even if it involved some degree of deception, highlights the importance of having a clear and unwavering belief in one's ability to create something. Ultimately, success is about accomplishing personal goals and living a fulfilling life.

#195 Morgan Housel: Get Rich, Stay Rich

The skills it takes to get rich are drastically different from the skills it takes to stay rich. Few understand this phenomenon more than Morgan Housel. He's identified unique lessons about wealth, happiness, and money by studying the world's richest families and learning what they did to build their wealth and just how quickly they squandered it all.
In this conversation, Shane and Housel discuss various aspects of risk-taking, wealth accumulation, and financial independence. Morgan explains the importance of understanding personal financial goals and the dangers of social comparison, lets everyone in on his personal financial “mistake” that instantly made him sleep better at night, and why the poorest people in the world disproportionately play the lottery—and why it makes sense that they do. They also touch on the influence of upbringing on financial behaviors, the difference between being rich and wealthy, and the critical role of compounding in financial success. Of course, we can’t have a writer as good as Morgan Housel on the podcast and not ask him about his process, so Housel concludes with insights into storytelling, his writing processes, and the importance of leading by example in teaching financial values to children.
Morgan Housel is a partner at Collaborative Fund. Previously, he was an analyst at The Motley Fool. He is a two-time winner of the Best in Business Award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers and was selected by the Columbia Journalism Review for the Best Business Writing anthology. #192 David Segal: Yearly Planning, Daily Action

Working in a business and working on a business are two different things. Without the former, nothing gets done; without the latter, the wrong things get done. David Segal has a unique way of managing that tension, and this episode, he reveals all his business operating secrets and explains how he failed along the way.

Shane and Segal discuss what entrepreneurship really is, where motivation comes from, and what Segal learned building a $200 million tea business. Shane and David also dive deep into the dark side of success and the radical depression that can strike when you get a big payday, life and business lessons they learned from Warren Buffett, and the value of time management.

David Segal is the co-founder of Firebelly Tea. He’s also best known as “the David” of DAVIDsTEA. During his time at DAVIDsTEA, Segal grew the company from a single store to a $200 million retail giant. Segal left DAVIDsTEA in 2016 and started Mad Radish—a quick service restaurant concept. Mad Radish is all about providing healthy, gourmet fast foods. In 2021, Segal started Firebelly tea to create exceptional loose leaf teas tailored to modern living.

#190 Brad Jacobs: Building a Business Empire
Throughout his tenure, Brad Jacobs has built multiple billion-dollar companies. While there is no "playbook" for growing a business, he focuses on a few factors above all else in every company he operates, and in this conversation, he reveals them all.

Shane and Jacobs discuss how to read anyone during an interview through a series of intentional questions, the exciting role of AI and technology in the future of business, and where money-making ideas hide in companies. Jacobs also shares how his training in math and music made him a better business operator, the one thing he focuses on to grow his businesses, how to spot big trends before everyone else, and the only thing a company should focus on for success.

Brad Jacobs has started five companies from scratch and led each to become a billion-dollar or multibillion-dollar enterprise. These include three publicly traded companies: XPO Logistics, where he serves as Chairman and CEO, United Rentals, and United Waste Systems. Before starting XPO in 2011, Jacobs founded United Rentals in 1997 and led the company as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. In 1989, he founded United Waste Systems.

#189 Chris Davis: Three Generations of Wealth

#189 Chris Davis: Three Generations of Wealth

Most families who obtain immense wealth squander it by the third generation. But Chris Davis comes from a family whose grandfather and father all became independently wealthy of each other, and Davis has done the same. How does that keep happening? In this conversation, we find out.

Shane and Chris discuss life and investment lessons he learned from his father and grandfather, why writing is more important to clarify one's thinking no matter who's reading it, and the surprising benefit of reading physical newspapers and wearing ties to work. Davis also shares his value-investing philosophy, what he learned from working with and meeting Charlie Munger, and what parents can do to raise kids who aren't entitled. Davis talks about his alcohol drink tracker and why it's important to him, why he never puts himself in situations where envy can grow, and Warren Buffett's letter about why investment managers underperform.

Chris Davis has been a Director of The Coca-Cola Company since April 2018. Davis is Chairman of Davis Selected Advisers-NY, Inc., an independent investment management firm founded in 1969. Davis joined Davis Selected Advisers-NY, Inc. in 1989 as a financial analyst and in 1995, he became a portfolio manager of the firm’s flagship funds. Prior to joining Davis Selected Advisers-NY, Inc., he served as a research analyst at Tanaka Capital Management and as an accountant at State Street Bank and Trust Co.

#188: Bryan Johnson: Five Habits for Longer Living
What can you do (or avoid) tomorrow to guarantee you can live longer?

In this episode, Bryan Johnson reveals the five simple disciplines you can start doing to live healthier and longer. Johnson shares what his daily routine looks like, the ins and outs of his experimentation process, and why he gave his father plasma.

Johnson also opens up about the constant hate he receives from people online, how he deals with it all, and what he wishes he'd known when he sold his company.

Bryan Johnson is the world's most measured human. Johnson sold his company to PayPal in 2013. Through Project Blueprint, Johnson has achieved metabolic health equal to the top 1.5% of 18 year olds, inflammation 66% lower than the average 10 year old, and reduced his speed of aging by the equivalent of 31 years.

Johnson is also the founder of Kernel, creator of the world’s first mainstream non-invasive neuroimaging system; and OS Fund, where he invested in the predictable engineering of atoms, molecules, and organisms.

Welcome back to another episode of The Viall Files: Ask Nick Edition! We’re back to answer your burning questions about the world of dating and relationships. Before getting to our callers, we talk about our weekend field trip to Schwartz & Sandy’s, what we thought about it, and what the staff had to say!

Our first callers are a husband and wife that have different understandings of empathy. Holly wishes Will was more empathetic and could help with her emotions while running a business, but Will is hoping for more understanding that it doesn’t come naturally to him and he also has a very stressful job. Our second caller recently broke up with her long term boyfriend, only to have one of her guy friends shoot his shot. We analyze all of the signs to figure out if he’s being supportive or wanting more out of their friendship. Our final caller is in love with two men she’s dating - one of whom she has a deeper emotional connection with, the other with great chemistry in the bedroom. She’s been dating both of them for five months, and isn’t sure who to pursue fully.

“Guys can often act like a boyfriend, and not want to be a boyfriend.”
