Body Electric Part 6: Walk Into The Future

    enNovember 07, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Importance of Employee Health and Well-beingRegular health check-ups and a balanced lifestyle are crucial for employee health. Employers can support their employees through benefits and create a happier, healthier workforce.

Prioritizing employee health and well-being can have significant impacts on their lives. Dana, a listener and HR professional, shares her personal experience of dealing with a stroke caused by arteriosclerosis. Despite her active lifestyle, she was not the picture of perfect health. After the diagnosis, she made drastic changes to her diet and exercise routine. Her story underscores the importance of regular health check-ups and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Employers, like Humana, play a crucial role in supporting their employees' well-being through benefits like group dental, vision, life, and disability plans. By investing in their employees' health, businesses not only create a more engaged workforce but also contribute to a happier and healthier society.

    • Incorporating movement breaks into workdayTaking short walks every half hour can boost energy, clear mind, and enhance focus and productivity

Incorporating regular movement breaks into your workday can significantly improve your energy levels and overall productivity, despite the initial challenges of fitting them into your schedule. As shared in the podcast, participant Dana found that taking a five-minute walk every half hour not only helped clear her mind but also allowed her to return to her work with renewed focus and efficiency. The use of a timer and planning her work around the breaks rather than the other way around, helped her effectively manage her time and tasks. This simple yet effective practice can make a noticeable difference in one's work-from-home lifestyle, contributing to better energy management and overall well-being.

    • Study on movement breaks shows potential improvements in well-beingPreliminary study results indicate that frequent movement breaks can lead to decreased fatigue, positive emotions, and negative emotion reductions. Potential health benefits include decreased blood pressure and insulin use.

The study on movement breaks conducted by researchers at Columbia University Medical Center showed preliminary positive results. Participants reported improvements in fatigue levels, positive emotions, and decreases in negative emotions. A dose-response relationship was observed, indicating that the more frequent the movement breaks, the greater the improvement. However, it's important to note that these findings are not yet peer-reviewed. Dana, who participated in the study, shared her personal experience of significant improvements in her health, including a decrease in blood pressure and potential reduction in insulin use. Her husband also reported benefits, such as improved mood. These findings suggest that incorporating regular movement breaks into daily life may have positive effects on overall well-being.

    • Taking movement breaks every half hour reduces workday fatigue by approximately 30%Regular movement breaks improve energy levels and are enjoyable, but full compliance is a challenge

Taking regular movement breaks throughout the day significantly improves fatigue levels, with the group that took breaks every half hour experiencing the greatest improvement (approximately 30%). However, compliance was a challenge, with only 60% of participants sticking to the recommended breaks. Despite this, a large majority (82-83%) reported liking the intervention. Feasibility was a concern, with only about half of those taking breaks every half hour finding it doable. On average, this group took only eight breaks a day, far less than the recommended 16 in an eight-hour workday. Despite these challenges, the study showed promising results, with participants reporting increased energy and enjoyment of the breaks. Some even credited the intervention with helping them make significant life changes, such as quitting their jobs. Overall, the study highlights the importance of taking regular movement breaks and the potential benefits, even if full compliance is a challenge.

    • Making healthy habits automatic and enjoyableUsing body cues and integrating movement into work routines can make healthy habits automatic and enjoyable, leading to long-term adoption.

To encourage long-term adoption of healthy habits, it's essential to make them automatic and enjoyable. During a study, participants found that using body cues and integrating movement into their work routine were effective cues. Feeling good and wanting to do it, rather than being told to do it, was a powerful motivator. Researchers aim to continue this work and encourage individuals to spread the habit to their networks. However, aligning science with commercial interests can be challenging. For those eager to join, researchers will be conducting the next phase of the study and invite previous participants to collaborate. Ultimately, the goal is to create a ripple effect, encouraging movement and better health to spread organically.

    • Exploring the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Spatial ComputingThe fourth industrial revolution brings new opportunities for businesses and individuals through AI and data, with virtual reality headsets being a potential new way to experience screen time. Companies can adapt with tools like the American Express Business Gold Card, and focus on areas like methane management for a lower carbon future.

We are on the brink of a new economic era, the fourth industrial revolution, which will be characterized by the harnessing of data into artificial intelligence to transform various aspects of our lives. This could lead to new ways of experiencing screen time, such as through virtual reality headsets, which are already being used in gaming, pilot training, and surgical training. Tech companies are working on making these headsets more accessible to the masses, aiming to create a new era of spatial computing. Meanwhile, businesses can take advantage of tools like the American Express Business Gold Card to adapt and grow in this new economic landscape. Additionally, companies like Chevron are focusing on methane management to contribute to a lower carbon future.

    • Exploring the Future of Spatial ComputingSpatial computing, a blend of virtual and augmented reality, has the potential to revolutionize our relationship with technology by offering a new dimension to how we work, interact, and consume media, with Apple's upcoming headset being a prime example.

Spatial computing, a blend of virtual and augmented reality, is poised to significantly upgrade our daily lives, offering a new dimension to how we work, interact, and consume media. Apple's upcoming headset is a prime example, allowing users to see the world around them while also interacting with virtual content. This technology, which is still in development, has the potential to revolutionize our relationship with technology, as it not only seeks our time, attention, and money but also our physical presence. As we explore this new frontier, it's essential to consider the implications, both exciting and concerning, of this profound infiltration into our lives.

    • The Double-Edged Sword of Immersive Technologies: VR and ARImmersive technologies like VR and AR offer new ways of interacting with information but raise concerns about health effects and potential for addiction. A balanced approach is needed, with technology used for focused work and then put aside.

The use of immersive technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) is a double-edged sword. While they offer the potential for new and innovative ways of interacting with information and the world around us, they also raise concerns about the physical and mental health effects, especially when used excessively. The speaker shares her experience of using a VR app called Soft Space, which she found difficult to use and had mixed feelings about due to the physical effort required and potential for addiction. She also expresses concerns about the potential for these technologies to be controlled by corporations, leading to exploitation of users' vulnerabilities. The speaker advocates for a balanced approach, where technology is used for concentrated bouts of deep work and then put aside, rather than being an all-consuming part of our lives. She also emphasizes the importance of open dialogue about the potential benefits and risks of these technologies, and the need for developers and policymakers to prioritize the well-being of users.

    • Impact of Technology on Bodies and MindsEmphasized the importance of sensory experiences and the impact of technology on our bodies and minds, encouraging listeners to incorporate sensory experiences into their daily lives.

Series founder Ilyushan Burke and guests discussed the impact of technology on our bodies and minds, and emphasized the need to incorporate sensory experiences into our daily lives. Body Electric: Type, tap, scroll, BREATHE! How our tech use impacts our breath
Do you have "screen apnea"? Our special series Body Electric continues with former Microsoft executive Linda Stone who coined the term. Around 2007, Linda noticed she had an unhealthy habit while answering emails: she held her breath. On this episode, she tells host Manoush Zomorodi how she tested her friends and colleagues for "screen apnea" and what she's done since.

Then, Manoush talks to the bestselling author of Breath, science writer James Nestor, who explains how shallow breathing impacts our physical and mental health. He takes us through a simple exercise to 'reset' our breath and relieve screen time stress.

Body Electric: Your earbuds and you—what all that listening is doing to us

Body Electric: Your earbuds and you—what all that listening is doing to us
Our special series, Body Electric, is back! This time, host Manoush Zomorodi does a deep dive into our headphone habits... because many of us wear them for hours at a time, and all that listening is taking a toll on our hearing.

Manoush speaks with exposure scientist Rick Neitzel, who has partnered with Apple on a first-of-its-kind study to find how our daily listening patterns are affecting our hearing. Neitzel offers advice on safe listening habits that can help protect our ears in the long term.

Later, Manoush takes us into the future of "consumer hearables" and how tech companies want us to never — ever— take our earbuds out.
