Border Cartel Concerns & West African Crisis | 8.9.23

    enAugust 09, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Reports of Armed Cartel Members Crossing Southern BorderArmed cartel members have been spotted near the southern border, emphasizing ongoing threats in the area. Previous arrests and sightings highlight regular cartel activity along the border.

Concerns over cartel activity at the southern border have been heightened after reports of armed men crossing into Texas. These individuals, believed to be cartel members, were spotted carrying long guns and wearing body armor near Fontaine, Texas. Although they managed to slip back across the border before being arrested or causing an incident, their presence emphasizes the ongoing threats in the area. Previous arrests of suspected cartel members and frequent sightings of armed individuals highlight the regular cartel activity along the border. Meanwhile, former Vice President Mike Pence has qualified for the presidential debate stage, and GOP candidates are shifting their strategies to challenge the current frontrunner, Donald Trump. Additionally, a coup in Niger could potentially destabilize West Africa, but more information is needed to determine the cause and potential consequences.

    • Growing concerns over cartels exploiting US immigration systemCartels are bypassing border restrictions, leading to a crisis at the southern border and in states like Massachusetts, highlighting the need for a comprehensive immigration policy.

Cartels are actively present and aggressive at the US-Mexico border, and there are growing concerns in Washington about their control and exploitation of the immigration system. Cartels have reportedly found ways to bypass restrictions on the CBP 1 app, potentially providing human traffickers with direct access to legal immigration pathways. Meanwhile, the immigration crisis is not just limited to the southern border. Massachusetts has declared a state of emergency due to an influx of immigrants into Boston, which has put a strain on the state's shelter system for the homeless. The root cause of this issue is a federal bottleneck for issuing work authorizations, leaving immigrants unable to support themselves and contributing to the strain on state resources. These issues highlight the need for a comprehensive and effective immigration policy that addresses the root causes of migration and ensures the security and stability of our borders.

    • Mike Pence's Debate Qualification: A Crucial Milestone for His CampaignPence's inclusion in the GOP debate is significant, allowing him to present his case to voters amidst escalating attacks from Trump over their differing views on the January 6th events.

Former Vice President Mike Pence's qualification for the upcoming GOP primary debate is a crucial milestone for his campaign. Having fallen behind Trump, Ron DeSantis, and Vivek Ramaswamy in polling, being in the debate provides him with a valuable opportunity to present his pitch to voters. Recently, Pence has sharpened his attacks on Trump, particularly regarding the January 6th events, where Trump requested Pence to reject the election results. Pence maintains that he had no authority to do so, a view shared by most legal scholars. However, Trump has retaliated, labeling Pence as delusional and accusing him of joining the "dark side." This escalating feud could add intrigue to the debate and potentially sway voters.

    • Republican candidates criticize Trump over 2020 electionSome GOP contenders are distancing themselves from Trump's stance on the 2020 election, potentially shifting the party dynamic, while international tensions escalate in Niger, which could have far-reaching consequences.

The tone among some Republican presidential candidates towards former President Trump is shifting, with Ron DeSantis, Mike Pence, and others becoming more critical of Trump's handling of the 2020 election. This comes as Trump's poll numbers have remained steady but unchanged, and he has yet to commit to attending the upcoming debate. Meanwhile, international news includes an emergency summit in response to a military coup in Niger, which has been condemned by neighboring countries and could lead to a regional war. The situation in Niger serves as a reminder that global events can significantly impact the political landscape.

    • Niger Coup Causes Concern Among Neighbors Amid Instability in West AfricaThe recent coup in Niger, driven by personal interests and the country's history of military takeovers, has caused concern among neighbors and led to ECOWAS condemnation and potential military intervention.

The recent coup in Niger, led by a general who was about to be removed from his position, has caused significant concern among Niger's neighbors due to the increasing instability in the region. Niger, one of the largest and poorest countries in West Africa, has a history of military takeovers, with the most recent one not appearing to be ideologically motivated but rather driven by personal interests. The United States and European Union have invested heavily in counterterrorism efforts in Niger, which may have contributed to the power struggle within the military. The coup comes after a series of military takeovers in the region, including in ECOWAS member states like Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso, which have resulted in their suspension from the Economic Coalition of West African States (ECOWAS). ECOWAS has condemned the coup and demanded the restoration of President Bazoum, threatening military intervention if he wasn't returned to power by a certain deadline. The deadline has passed, and ECOWAS is now holding an emergency meeting to determine its next steps. The instability in Niger and the wider region poses a significant threat to regional security and stability.

    • Military coup in Niger raises regional instability concernsThe military coup in Niger could lead to increased terrorism, insurgency, and a potential migrant crisis, while the US and other powers closely monitor the situation. The signing of the Save Women's Sports Act in Texas sparked controversy over gender and sports.

The military coup in Niger has raised concerns among neighboring countries about potential instability and the possibility of military intervention. The US and other Western powers have pulled out nonessential personnel and are closely monitoring the situation. The conflict could have serious consequences, including exacerbating terrorism and insurgency in the region and potentially leading to another migrant crisis. Meanwhile, in the US, the Save Women's Sports Act was signed in Texas amid heated protests from LGBT activists. The incident highlighted the ongoing debate over gender and sports. Overall, these events underscore the complex and evolving geopolitical landscape, with potential for both localized and far-reaching impacts.

    • Encountering Hostility from ProtestersDespite hostile behavior, the speaker stays committed to advocating for their argument using facts, science, logic, and common sense.

Despite facing hostile behavior from some protesters, the speaker remains committed to advocating for their argument. These protesters have resorted to using unacceptable methods such as throwing bottles, pouring drinks, and spitting, but they have been unable to challenge the speaker's position with facts, science, logic, or common sense. Instead, they have resorted to name-calling. The speaker views this behavior as a motivation to continue pushing their cause in all 50 states. This encounter highlights the importance of staying grounded in facts and reason, even in the face of adversity. The speaker's unwavering commitment to their cause is inspiring and serves as a reminder that progress often comes with resistance.

The $1.7 trillion omnibus itself was loaded with laughable pieces of pork — self-named monuments for various legislators; a chauffeur for the IRS commissioner — but it’s just the latest in a long trend for DC’s free spending and ever-growing government bureaucracy.

Biden and his fellow Democrats have been horrific on this issue, especially in light of the trillions they’ve put on the nation’s credit card.

    The Authoritarian Voter Next Door

    The Authoritarian Voter Next Door

Authoritarian voters cosplay Rambo on the U.S. Southern border, literally hunting refugees and denying them basic human rights. Our interview this week features Lisa Molomot and Jeff Bemiss, the filmmakers behind the extraordinary must-watch Peabody Award-winning film Missing in Brooks County about the immigration crisis in America deliberately engineered for maximum cruelty by both Republican and Democratic leaders over the years, creating the world’s deadliest border crossing. It does not have to be this way. In this discussion, you’ll hear common sense solutions, unmasking an entrenched genocidal culture that has gone unchecked for far too long.

Who was first in line to carry out the Holocaust? The authoritarian voter next door. Survivors described how their neighbors turned on them, throwing rocks through their windows. That’s who Trump is appealing to, driving out people who have existed throughout history: longing for a strongman to crush their enemies, and put mouthy women, smug nonwhite people, those pesky gays, and don’t forget entitled refugees in their place. These are the “vermin” Trump scapegoats as he travels the country, amplifying Russian disinformation, and consolidating his base: the authoritarian voter next door.

Reality Winner, the patriotic whistleblower who confirmed extensive Russian hacking of our election systems after government officials tried to downplay it, has faced far harsher punishment than violent coup plotter Trump with his 91 criminal indictments. The American people see the threat to our democracy clearly, which is why they’ve built resilient grassroots power that ushered in yet another historic Blue Wave. The latest victory in a long list: Dauphin County, PA flipped to Democratic control for the first time in 100 years. We the People have done significantly more to protect our democracy than Merrick Garland’s DOJ.

Given the immense power we’ve shown, it’s time to abolish the Electoral College, a monument to slavery, and agitate for other reforms to modernize the United States government. Gaslit Nation is working on a special series on how to Trump-proof our democracy, protecting us and future generations from his massive cult that ensures succession is guaranteed. Even after Trump is gone, another cultist will take his place. So it’s time to expand our historic Blue Wave energy into overdue government reform. The nonsense press release from the Supreme Court pretending to care about ethics is not what we’re talking about.

As a thank you to our Gaslit Nation community on Patreon, look out the weekend after Thanksgiving for a special MAKE ART workshop in the form of a podcast that you can download and try at your own leisure. We’re all natural born artists, and this act of self-care and meaningful therapy reminds us that our voices matter and that we’re needed now more than ever. In his brilliant resistance pocket guide On Tyranny, historian Timothy Snyder urges us to be visible, and that visibility comes through creativity, as we use our voice for our collective good. The model of this has always been embedded in this show that has featured interviews with extraordinary artists like Nelson George, a writer of the hip-hop movement and Andrea’s longtime mentor, and filmmaker Oleg Sentsov who survived a Siberian prison by writing a novel, stories, and directing a film.

Yes, art matters. Art is survival. And each of us, to navigate these civilization-making-or-breaking years ahead, can embrace our inner artist to create a sustainable, livable future together. Artists imagine and show that another world is possible. As Sentsov said on our show: Dictators die. Art is forever. Look out for that special MAKE ART workshop next week! This week’s bonus show will look at the latest in the Israel-Hamas war, troubling jumps in A.I., and answer questions from listeners at the Democracy Defender level and higher. Thank you to everyone who supports the show – we could not make Gaslit Nation without you!

FROM AXIOS: “Driving the news: In a Veterans Day speech in New Hampshire on Saturday, Trump vowed to "root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country that lie and steal and cheat on elections." He then posted the same message on Truth Social, including the word "vermin" often used by Hitler and Mussolini to denigrate Jews and their political enemies. Trump went on to say that "the threat from outside forces is far less sinister, dangerous and grave than the threat from within." The big picture: Trump's increasingly violent rhetoric — calling for a U.S. military leader to be executed, mocking a near-fatal assault on a congressional spouse, urging police to shoot potential shoplifters — has become a staple of his brand as he faces the threat of conviction in four different criminal cases.” https://www.axios.com/2023/11/13/trump-vermin-fascist-language-speech
