Braxton Berrios, The Cardinals Suck & Rovell Is Not Racist

    en-usJanuary 19, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • Enhancing Golf Experience with Fireball and Birdie Shot ClubFireball Whiskey and their new birdie shot club can improve golfing experience by adding enjoyment during inconvenient moments.

Golfing can be enjoyable but can also be ruined by minor inconveniences. To make a bad day better, the speaker recommends using Fireball Whiskey and their new Fireball birdie shot club. Off the golf course, the speaker discussed the NFL playoffs, specifically the Rams' victory over the Cardinals, and expressed frustration towards the Cardinals' performance. He also mentioned his experience of having a drink named after him, Pink Whitney. The speaker emphasized the importance of quality sleep for athletes, especially during the intense training of the NFL, and endorsed the Sleep Number smart bed for optimizing recovery. Additionally, he shared his strong opinion about the Cardinals being frauds and criticized Kyler Murray's performance in the game.

    • The role of defensive coordinator in a football team's successThe Cardinals' defense struggles highlighted the importance of a defensive coordinator's role in a team's success, despite the offensive potential led by Hopkins and Murray.

The success of a football team depends heavily on the performance of its quarterback and key skill position players, such as Kyler Murray, Antonio Brown, and OJ at running back. However, the defensive coordinator's role in leading the team can also be crucial. The Cardinals' offense, led by Hopkins, has great potential, but their defense struggled in the recent game against the Rams. The team's failure to adapt and adjust, despite obvious issues, reminded the speaker of a triple option offense, leaving fans questioning the coaching decisions. The body language and performance of the quarterback, Kyler Murray, also raised concerns, with some noting his lackluster demeanor on the sidelines. The team's future success will depend on addressing these issues and making necessary changes.

    • Body language, leadership, and performance in the NFLQuiet demeanor or intimidating presence, leadership matters, but it's not the only factor in team success. Akers' quick return from injury was notable, but health concerns remain.

Body language and leadership can significantly impact a team's performance, but it's not the only factor. Kyler Murray's quiet demeanor on the sidelines has been criticized, but some players, like punters or intimidating linebackers, are allowed to have different behaviors. The Rams' Matt Stafford proved his mettle by leading his team to a win without standout performances from Cooper Kupp, Odell Beckham Jr., and Cam Akers. Akers' quick return from an Achilles injury was impressive, but it's unclear how healthy he was. The NFL playoffs had few memorable games, with most decided by large margins or lackluster efforts from both teams. A mystery remains about Cam Akers' towel, which some speculate is used as a decoy. The stretchy shirts trend continues to intrigue fans.

    • Impact of fit and individual actions in sports performanceIndividual actions and external circumstances can significantly influence sports performance. Poor fits and personal choices can hinder success, while exploitative actions may spark controversy.

The fit and circumstances surrounding a player or coach in the NFL can significantly impact their performance. Odell Beckham Jr.'s struggles in Cleveland were not just due to a wrong fit, but also his own actions. Similarly, Kliff Kingsbury's coaching career has seen him fail upward into better jobs despite mediocre performance. In another context, Darren Rovell's collection of MLK memorabilia sparked controversy, reminding us that even well-intentioned actions can be perceived as exploitative. Overall, these discussions highlight the complex interplay of individual actions and external circumstances in sports and beyond.

    • Selling Historical Artifacts: A Sensitive IssueCollecting historical artifacts is not a license to profit; consider cultural significance and potential harm before selling.

Passion for a particular subject or history does not equate to ownership or the right to profit from it, especially when it comes to significant historical moments and figures. The discussion revolves around a man who owns a Rosa Parks NAACP card and was shocked by the backlash he received when he was accused of being racist. Despite his love for black history and Martin Luther King Jr., his actions were perceived as insensitive due to his intention to sell the card. The man's perspective was that he was just a collector, but the broader context of the historical significance of the card and the potential harm of profiting from it was not considered. This incident highlights the importance of understanding the cultural and historical significance of objects and the potential impact of one's actions, especially in the digital age where information and opinions spread rapidly.

    • Darren Rovell's Controversial Actions Provide Entertainment ValueDespite offensive behavior, Darren Rovell's unique perspective and unapologetic attitude provide entertainment value and remind us of the importance of self-expression and respecting others in physical altercations.

Despite Darren Rovell's controversial actions and out-of-touch behavior, he continues to provide unintentional comedy and entertainment value to the public. His unique perspective and unapologetic attitude have turned him into a net positive, even if his actions may be offensive or misunderstood by some. It's important to remember that everyone has the right to express themselves, even if their expressions may not align with societal norms or expectations. Rovell's case serves as a reminder that sometimes, the most entertaining and thought-provoking content comes from the most unexpected places. Additionally, the discussion touched upon the importance of respecting the tap in physical altercations, as demonstrated in the Eagles fan incident.

    • Michael Jackson's Rivalry with Eagles and Bills FansFans of different sports teams can have intense rivalries, expressing strong emotions and creative insults towards each other, often extending beyond the sports field. The jumpsuit worn by podcast speakers became a topic, leading to a discussion on humanity and the need for some people to be 'thinned out'.

Michael Jackson, in the minds of some sports fans, was in a heated rivalry, much like a UFC fight, with various fan bases, particularly those of the Eagles and Bills. This rivalry extends beyond sports, with fans displaying strong emotions and creative insults towards each other. The jumpsuit worn by the speakers during their podcast has become a popular topic, and the discussion turned to the idea of humanity, with the suggestion that some people are so stubborn and stupid that they need to be "thinned out." The speakers also discussed their hot seats and cool thrones, with Andy Reid's food metaphors and Stephen A. Smith's celebration of the Cowboys' collapse being highlighted. Overall, the conversation showcased the intensity and creativity of sports rivalries and the unique ways fans express their passion for their teams.

    • The Power of Determination: A Near-Death Experience and a Cowboys GameSteven A. Smith's determination to recover and witness a Cowboys game despite a near-death experience shows the strength of human will. LeBron James' influence on coaches and the potential impact of 5G on US air travel were also discussed.

The power of determination and will to live can be stronger than any obstacle, even a near-death experience. Steven A. Smith shared his harrowing experience of being hospitalized and being saved by a Cowboys game that he refused to miss. The fake news about Mike McCarthy's analytics call for a draw play during the game added to the excitement, but the real story lies in Smith's determination to recover and witness the game in person. Another significant takeaway is the influence and power LeBron James holds over coaches, with rumors of Frank Vogel potentially being fired due to the team's performance. The evaluation of coaches on a game-to-game basis and the public humiliation that comes with coaching LeBron is a tough spot for any coach to be in. Lastly, the potential impact of 5G radars on US Air Shipping and Travel was a surprising revelation. The grounding of all US air travel due to the new radars affecting landing systems was a shock, especially considering the widespread use of 5G in commercials and other countries. The precise reason for this issue remains unclear, but it highlights the importance of staying informed about technological advancements and their potential impact on various industries.

    • 5G waves and radar technology causing concerns for air travelSpeculation about potential disruptions to aviation due to 5G waves, compared to Y2K scare, with possible plane groundings and cell phone restrictions on planes discussed.

There are ongoing concerns about the impact of 5G waves on radar technology, potentially disrupting air travel. This issue was compared to the Y2K scare, with speculation about a potential grounding of planes. However, it was also suggested that this could be used as an excuse to restrict cell phone use on planes. Elsewhere in the conversation, the Jamaican bobsled team qualified for the 2022 Olympics, leading to a discussion about potential boycotts of the Winter Games in China due to human rights concerns. The owner of the Golden State Warters made headlines for his indifferent response to questions about the Uighur situation. The conversation also touched on the existence of athletes like Marcus Mariota and Nikola Jokic, and the Vermont Catamounts' return to Burlington for a basketball game.

    • All-Pro recognition for kick returnersBraxton Berrios shares emotional reaction to becoming an All-Pro kick returner, emphasizing the importance and prestige of the role in football.

The designation of being an All-Pro player carries significant weight and recognition in the NFL, especially for less glamorous positions like kick returners. Braxton Berrios, a free agent and former All-Pro kick returner, shared his emotional reaction to receiving the honor and discussed the importance of the role in the game. Despite the potential danger involved, kick returners continue to bring excitement and impact to football. The All-Pro title is determined by media votes, adding to its prestige and making it a highly sought-after achievement for players.

    • Surprising NFL Moments: Montana on All-Pro, Elway's MVPUnexpected twists in the NFL include Montana's All-Pro nod and Elway's MVP win, players' uncertainty in team changes, and Belichick's recognition of talent

The NFL world can surprise you with unexpected twists and turns, as evidenced by the unusual occurrence of Joe Montana making the All-Pro team while John Elway won the MVP award in one year. Another surprising turn of events was when a player, despite being predicted to join the New England Patriots, was unsure if it was a prank when it actually happened. Wiggle and quickness are essential qualities for a successful receiver, and even though being undersized can have its advantages, such as avoiding hits and falling correctly in the NFL, it can also lead to tough conversations when injuries occur. Bill Belichick's high regard for talent was demonstrated when he praised a player to another team, even after letting him go. Overall, the NFL journey is full of unexpected twists and turns, and players must adapt and learn from each experience.

    • Impact of NIL deals on college recruitingNIL deals can influence recruiting, but personal factors and official visits remain crucial in a player's decision-making process

The college athletics landscape, specifically regarding Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals, can significantly impact recruiting and a player's decision-making process. The presence of NIL deals can give schools like Miami, which is located in a desirable city, a recruiting advantage over other schools. However, the lack of regulation in the current system can lead to a free-for-all environment. Personal factors, such as loyalty and official visits, also play a crucial role in a player's decision. The power of official visits, especially the last one, can leave a lasting impression and influence a player's commitment. While fan engagement and random adults tweeting at players might be interesting, they generally don't have a significant impact on a player's decision-making process. Ultimately, the decision to attend a college is a personal one that involves various factors, and NIL deals are just one piece of the puzzle.

    • The intense fan culture and expectations in college football can be overwhelming for student-athletesStudent-athletes in college football face intense fan culture and expectations, with little control over their image and soundtracks, and may struggle with the pressure to perform and win.

While the initial recognition and offers from colleges can be exciting for student-athletes, the constant attention from fans can become overwhelming and even annoying. The creation of highlight reels and choice of soundtracks are often out of the athletes' control. For instance, the speaker mentioned having no involvement in his high school mixtape and being subjected to songs like "Headstrong" and "Down With the Sickness" as the soundtrack. The fan culture and expectations surrounding college football can be intense, as exemplified by the speaker's experience of the University of Miami's ups and downs. The landscape of college football has changed, making a return to past glory seemingly impossible, but the speaker believes that with the right leadership, the University of Miami can still make a meaningful impact. Additionally, the speaker, being a Wisconsin Badger fan, expressed his disdain for the turnover chain and suggested a rule against using it when the team is losing by a large margin. The athlete's role in the turnover chain was limited to observing and recovering the ball on offense or special teams.

    • Miami football on the rise with NIL deals and strong recruitingThe University of Miami is poised for a comeback in the ACC with the implementation of NIL deals and a talented recruiting class, while effective training and fitness routines are crucial for football success.

The University of Miami, despite some tough losses and a period of underperformance in the ACC, has an opportunity to bounce back with the implementation of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals and a strong recruiting class. This comes as the ACC has struggled overall, making it an opportune time for Miami to reclaim its status as a top contender. Additionally, the importance of effective training and fitness routines, such as those offered by Peloton, was emphasized for improving skills and staying in shape for the demands of football. Regarding the Jets, there were stories of intense competition in practice between the offense and defense, particularly under former defensive coordinator Greg Williams, who favored aggressive blitzing strategies. Mike White's impressive performance in his first start had fans and teammates believing he could be a star quarterback, while Zach Wilson's rookie year was met with mixed results.

    • Rookie Corey Davis's Growth Amid ChallengesDespite off-field distractions, Corey Davis quickly adapted and improved in the second half of his rookie season. Mentors and self-confidence played a role in his growth.

Rookie Corey Davis showed promising growth throughout his first NFL season despite facing challenges both on and off the field. His ability to learn quickly and adapt, even during tough times, was evident in his improved performance in the second half of the season. While some distractions, like media attention and personal style choices, may seem trivial, they can impact focus and morale. Mentors and idols, like Devin Hester, can influence players in subtle yet significant ways, shaping their mindset and approach to the game. And sometimes, a little self-confidence and support from teammates can go a long way.

    • Unexpected lateral plays in football can alter game dynamicsEffective lateral plays require proper coaching and execution, and can significantly change game outcomes when not used in desperation situations.

The unexpected and well-executed lateral play in football, when used strategically and not in desperation situations, can significantly change the game's dynamics. The Jets successfully ran such a play during a second-quarter game, resulting in a phenomenal outcome. However, the success of such plays relies on proper coaching and execution. Unfortunately, not all teams have mastered this play, leading to unsuccessful attempts. The play's effectiveness is heightened when it's not a last-ditch effort, as the opposing team may anticipate it in desperation situations. Additionally, the lateral play can be less risky if thrown towards the sideline, as any missed throws would result in the ball going out of bounds with minimal harm done.

    • Learning from the Best: Being a Scout Team PlayerLearning from successful coaches and players, even as a scout team player, can provide valuable experiences and insights.

Being part of a successful NFL team, even if you're not getting much playing time, can provide invaluable learning experiences. The speaker shared his experience as a scout team player for the New England Patriots under Bill Belichick, where he helped with scouting reports and learned from the best in the business, including Tom Brady. He emphasized the importance of being a good team player and being prepared, even if you're not the one in the spotlight. The speaker also discussed the importance of appearance, sharing that he takes pride in looking good, even if the team loses. He also mentioned his experience with coaches Josh McDaniels and Steve Belichick, and how they each brought unique perspectives to the team. Overall, the speaker's message was about the value of hard work, preparation, and teamwork, even when you're not the one in the limelight.

    • The complex dynamic between athletes and coaches in sports facilitiesDuring challenging situations like injuries or coaching changes, athletes and coaches navigate their relationships, while players like Zach Wilson use unique behaviors to succeed on the field.

The dynamic between athletes and coaches in a sports facility can be complex, especially during challenging situations like injuries or coaching changes. During Sam Darnold's mono absence, teammates joked about it behind his back but respected his privacy when he returned. Similarly, during the last weeks of the Bears season when coaches like Matt Nagy and Adam Gase were about to be fired, the team continued to function with an awareness of the impending changes. These situations illustrate the human side of sports, which intertwines with the business aspect, creating a unique and intriguing environment. Regarding specific player behaviors, Zach Wilson's pointing downfield is a part of his playing style. He doesn't always instruct receivers to go deep but uses it to gauge the defense and potentially set up a big play. The examples given include the touchdown pass to Corey Davis and a 4-point play.

    • Jets Player Praises Coaching Staff, Discusses Future Plans and Lottery MachineBraxton Berrios appreciates Robert Saleh's coaching skills and storytelling, is optimistic about the Jets' future, and hasn't decided on resigning yet. He also shared a lottery machine anecdote and spoke about his ping pong passion.

Braxton Berrios, a New York Jets player, spoke highly of his current coaching staff, specifically Robert Saleh, praising his storytelling abilities and overall coaching skills. Berrios also mentioned that the Jets are heading in a good direction and he loves the young, communicative coaching staff. Despite this, he hasn't announced any plans to resign yet, as it's a complex decision with financial considerations. The conversation also touched on the topic of numbers being left out in a lottery machine, with the host revealing that all numbers were still present after a thorough check. Berrios also mentioned his love for ping pong and his potential plan to upgrade his machine. The conversation ended with a discussion about Tibet and the Olympics. Overall, Berrios' enthusiasm and positive outlook towards the Jets coaching staff and the team's direction were the main takeaways from the conversation.

    • Hank and Billy discuss potential guests and their desire for a fightThey talked about bringing back past guests Tim the Timmer and Miley Cyrus, admired John Cena and Rex Ryan as potential new guests, and discussed the challenges of doing interviews during the pandemic

Hank and Billy had a conversation about various topics, including their spending habits, running out of Take On Me remixes, and potential guests for their show. Hank expressed a desire to fight someone, possibly Hank, but Billy suggested earning the right to do so. They discussed past interviews and guests, with Billy expressing a desire to have Tim the Timmer and Miley Cyrus back on the show. They also mentioned the challenges of doing interviews over Zoom due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hank also mentioned his admiration for John Cena and Rex Ryan as potential guests. Overall, the conversation was lighthearted and included a lot of banter between the two friends.

    • Understanding motivations behind asking about betting amountsBe mindful of reasons why people ask about betting amounts and respond appropriately, considering the context and respecting individual boundaries.

People's curiosity about how much money is being bet on a football game can stem from different motivations. If it's with other gamblers, they might be trying to unit shame, but if it's with non-gamblers, they're likely just trying to gauge the importance or investment level in the game. Additionally, if the non-gambler is watching with someone who has a significant amount at stake, they might be expecting to share in the winnings or losses. It's essential to understand the context and respond accordingly. The speaker shared that they are a poor college student and their average unit is $5, and they have grown tired of answering the question about the amount they bet. Instead, they suggested asking if the bet is a big or small one for the person betting. Overall, it's important to remember that everyone has different betting habits and comfort levels, and respecting those boundaries is crucial.

    • Billy's Misinformation and InconsistencyBilly frequently shares false or misinterpreted information and can be inconsistent, highlighting the importance of fact-checking before sharing information in a group setting.

During a conversation, Billy made several claims that were later found to be false or misinterpreted. These included the number of Tom Brady's playoff wins and a conspiracy theory about Anthony Fauci and Mother Teresa. Another instance was when Billy tried to convince the group that almonds were not keto-friendly, only to later change his mind. These incidents showcase Billy's tendency to spread misinformation and his inconsistency. Despite these instances, the group found humor in Billy's antics and even looked forward to his unique and often absurd facts. However, it's important to fact-check information before spreading it, especially in a group setting.

    • Dream jobs and the importance of pursuing themGuests shared their dream jobs and their readiness to leave current roles for them, inspired by Joe Rogan's advocacy for the ketosis diet.

The podcast discussion showcased the guests' dream jobs and their willingness to take them, even if it meant leaving their current roles. Joe Rogan's advocacy for the ketosis diet inspired one guest to try it, leading him to listen to more of Rogan's podcast. Another guest, who dreamed of being a sports business reporter, would drop everything for such an opportunity. The guests also entertained hypothetical offers, such as working for Joe Rogan or hosting a game show, and acknowledged they would take them if given the chance. The conversation underscored the importance of pursuing dreams and being open to new opportunities.

The 12th Man Kickoff Team: A Conversation with Dave Coolidge, Ike Liles, and Dennis Mudd

The 12th Man Kickoff Team: A Conversation with Dave Coolidge, Ike Liles, and Dennis Mudd

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Texas A&M 12th Man tradition, and a big part of that tradition is the 12th Man Kickoff Team. Back in 1982, Jackie Sherrill, Texas A&M's football coach, decided that he would start a kickoff squad made up entirely of walk-ons, thus creating one of the best traditions in college football. Our guests today, Dave Coolidge, Ike Liles, and Dennis Mudd, will be sharing their experiences being involved in the 12th Man Kickoff, as well as their reasons for joining that tradition in the first place, and the leadership lessons they learned along the way. You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: www.brianbeckcom.org/dave-coolidge-ike-liles-and-dennis-mudd
