Classical music can be fun and accessible to all, regardless of age or background. The speaker discovered a cellist on Instagram who brought a new energy and vitality to classical music through an unconventional performance of Vivaldi's A Minor cello concerto. By breaking free of the rules and adding personal expression, the cellist opened up classical music to a wider audience, including those who may not have been interested before. The speaker believes that classical music contains the same beauty and excitement as any other genre, but sometimes its form can make it difficult for newcomers to access. The cellist, who started playing at a young age and grew up with music in the house, discovered her unique style through improvisation and a love for making music. While she initially didn't take her talent seriously until she was older, she eventually realized the importance of practice and preparation to deliver a great performance. Overall, the speaker's experience shows that classical music can be a source of joy and excitement for people of all ages, and that breaking free of traditional expectations can help bring new audiences to the genre.

    • Classical music soloist lifestyleThe classical music soloist lifestyle demands intense preparation, adaptability, and strong chemistry with orchestras and conductors, while providing rewarding yet isolating experiences.

Being a soloist in classical music is a challenging lifestyle that requires both intense preparation and adaptability. The Russian cellist, who started playing at the age of ten and now lives in Germany, shared her experiences of performing as a guest artist, often traveling for rehearsals and concerts. She emphasized the importance of finding chemistry with orchestras and conductors in a short amount of time. The everyday challenge for her is the psychological and emotional preparation for each performance, which can be draining but also rewarding. She expressed that the lifestyle can be isolating and impact social connections, but the desire to share her music with audiences keeps her going. Overall, her raw talent and dedication to her craft have allowed her to thrive in this unique and demanding profession.

    • Performing arts connectionAuthentic connection and historical precedent are crucial in performing arts, allowing for personalized experiences and audience engagement.

Performing live, whether it's music or speaking, is about connecting with the audience and delivering a message. The energy and engagement from the audience can make every performance unique, even if the material is repeated. The desire to connect and share experiences is a common thread throughout a performer's career. The speaker shared her personal experience of the excitement and exhaustion of performing, and the importance of staying present and fully engaged with the audience. Classical music, in particular, has a tradition of presenting complete pieces, but the speaker chose to select and perform individual movements from her album. She defended this decision by referencing historical precedent, where musicians like Beethoven and Chopin performed separate movements from their works. This approach allows for a more personal connection with the audience and a focus on the best parts of the music. Overall, the discussion emphasized the importance of authentic connection and the flexibility to adapt to different audiences and situations.

    • Social media and classical musicSocial media and modern approaches can make classical music more accessible and appealing by offering personalized playlists and focusing on individual movements, challenging the traditional 'album mentality'.

The use of social media and modern approaches to classical music, such as creating personalized playlists and focusing on individual movements, can make the genre more accessible and appealing to new audiences. This person's unique approach to classical music, discovered on Instagram, is modernizing the way we consume and engage with classical music in a world that values convenience and personalization. Their perspective challenges the traditional "album mentality" of classical music and offers a fresh, playlist-based perspective that resonates with the current societal trend.

    • Music experienceMusic can transport us emotionally and immerse us in the moment, whether through playing an instrument or listening to a diverse range of compositions.

Music, whether it's classical or modern, has the power to transport us to another place and connect us to our emotions. The discussion touched upon the immersive experience of playing an instrument, such as the cello, and how it allows for self-expression beyond words. Additionally, the versatility of classical music was emphasized, with its ability to cater to various moods and skill levels. Whether it's the peaceful melodies of Bach or the complex compositions of Shostakovich, music offers a rich and diverse listening experience that can provide relaxation, challenge, and emotional depth. So next time you listen to a piece of music, try to let go of distractions and fully immerse yourself in the moment, allowing the music to take you on a journey.

    • Appreciation of art and musicExploring the origins and history of art and music deepens our understanding and appreciation. Balancing preservation and new approaches enhances classical music's value.

Exploration and connection are key elements in appreciating both art and music. Whether it's in an art museum or listening to a favorite song, finding what resonates with us and discovering its origins can lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation. Classical music, as an art form with deep traditions, benefits from a balance between preserving its history and incorporating new approaches. A piece of history, like a Stradivarius cello, carries a rich past and offers a connection to the past and future through the music it creates. Obsession with a particular piece or phrase can also deepen our relationship with the art or music, making it a personal soundtrack to our lives.

    • Creativity and connectionExpressing oneself creatively and sharing it with others can lead to profound joy and meaningful experiences, fostering a sense of ownership, pride, and connection

Creativity and personal connection can bring profound joy and satisfaction. Whether it's through music, storytelling, or other forms of art, having the freedom to express oneself and share it with others can lead to unique and meaningful experiences. For instance, the musician in the conversation shared how creating and performing her own program, "Venice," gave her a sense of ownership and pride that she doesn't always feel with other performances. Similarly, the hosts of the podcast "Criminalia" shared how exploring true crime stories together brings them joy and allows them to connect with their audience. Overall, the importance of creativity and connection was a recurring theme throughout the discussion.

    • Music as a tool for emotional connectionSeth Globepainter focuses on audience emotions rather than historical conventions, using music to connect and console in times of tension, potentially revolutionizing the classical music world.

Seth Globepainter approaches music as a tool for communication, focusing on the audience and their emotional needs rather than adhering strictly to historical conventions or the intentions of composers. His experiences, such as playing for his grandmother, have shown him the power of music to connect and console in times of tension. This approach sets him apart as an important musician, with the ability to evoke emotions and reach new audiences, particularly young people, in the classical music world. The future of classical music, according to the conversation, may look very different in 10 years, with a shift towards emotional connection and engagement rather than formal preservation. Seth's unique perspective and approach to music as a gift and a language for communication make him a remarkable artist in the classical music sphere.

Wealth Is Togetherness with community organizer Kennedy Odede

The slums of Kenya are a tough place to grow up. Stealing a mango could get you killed.

Kennedy Odede grew up in Kibera, Africa's largest urban slum. A street kid at age 10, he dreamed of factory work for 10 cents a day. But after stealing a mango out of hunger, a stranger's single act of kindness changed the course of his life.

Today, Kennedy is the CEO and founder of Shining Hope for Communities, or SHOFCO. For 20 years, SHOFCO has empowered Kenya's poorest neighborhoods, helping over 4 million people access clean water, education, and Internet. In 2024, TIME Magazine named Kennedy one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Kennedy shares with me what it takes to see human goodness while surrounded by scarcity and anger, and how poverty taught him that being together is one of the greatest forms of wealth.

Creativity Is Connection with poet IN-Q

Business and poetry usually don't mix. But vulnerability has the power to bring teams together.

Poet IN-Q has found an unlikely audience in business. A slam poetry veteran and accomplished songwriter, companies invite IN-Q to help strengthen their cultures. He works with teams to connect on a deeper level, using poetry to share something human. As he'll tell you, winning over crowds of skeptical businesspeople is an art.

In this conversation, IN-Q takes me through a powerful exercise in vulnerability. He shares some deeply personal poems and walks me through writing my own, and I learn that to truly connect with someone else, you must offer something of yourself first.

How to Breathe Out Fear with freediver Li Karlsen

How to Breathe Out Fear with freediver Li Karlsen

Courage isn't about bravado. It's about staying calm.

Li Karlsen knows a lot about staying calm under the most inhospitable conditions. One of the most accomplished freedivers in the world, Li is a record-holding champion at holding her breath and diving hundreds of feet below the ocean's surface.

I wanted to ask Li what freediving has taught her about managing stress and fear. It turns out the lessons she's learned in the ocean work just as well above the water. Something as simple as changing the way we breathe can have a huge impact on our own fear and stress.

The War On The Young with professor Scott Galloway

Building wealth is an unequal pursuit. Scott Galloway believes no one is getting more screwed financially than young people.

Scott argues what the U.S. is doing to the economic future of its youth is nothing less than a war on the young. The massive transfer of wealth from young to old is a topic he explores in his new book The Algebra of Wealth

I was delighted to have Prof G back on the show to share what's been on his mind lately, and enjoyed veering far off topic to discuss love, money, and the nature of true friendship.
