    Podcast Summary

    • Combining substance and civility for value creationCreating value involves combining substance and civility in business, education, and society to generate present and future worth, foster community, and repair societal wounds.

Creating value, whether for a business or for a society, requires a combination of substance and civility. CrossCountry Consulting provides integrated solutions for businesses to generate present and future value, while Purdue Global offers an education that respects life experience. Clorox Scentiva adds a touch of enjoyment to everyday cleaning. Alexandra Hudson, in her book "The Soul of Civility," emphasizes the importance of creating community by focusing on manners and respect, even in the face of adversity and division. Ultimately, the key to generating value and repairing societal wounds is to combine substance with civility, creating a future-ready business environment, a fulfilling educational experience, and a more civil society.

    • Distinguishing between civility and politenessCivility is an internal disposition, politeness is external etiquette. Being impolite for the sake of respect and love is sometimes necessary.

True nature of some people can be deceiving, as those who appear nice and cooperative can be just as ruthless as those who are openly hostile. This experience clarified the importance of distinguishing between civility and politeness. Civility is an internal disposition of respecting others as moral equals, while politeness is external etiquette. Sometimes, being impolite and having uncomfortable conversations is necessary to truly respect and love others. However, in a culture where self-interest prevails, teaching civility becomes a challenge. It's essential to focus on the right orientation and disposition towards others, rather than just their appearance or politeness.

    • Civility: An Inherent and Instrumental GoodCivility is essential for a free and flourishing society, dehumanizing incivility harms all parties, and practicing kindness and compassion can lead to a better world.

Civility is not only an inherent good, but also an instrumental one. It's essential for a free and flourishing society, as it supports our democracy and fosters a pro-human orientation towards others. Martin Luther King Jr.'s letter from Birmingham Jail highlights the mutual harm of incivility, as it dehumanizes both parties involved and hurts their humanity. On the other hand, acts of kindness, compassion, and grace are mutually ennobling. However, the challenge lies in who should go first in practicing civility. The answer is simple: we all do. When we retreat from politics and engage in acts of kindness and compassion, we can contribute to a quiet revolution against our divided and egotistical society. So, let's start by being civil to each other, and in doing so, we'll make the world a better place for everyone.

    • Intentional community building fosters connections across diverse groupsBuilding intentional communities helps create stronger, more beautiful relationships, especially in a world where technology isolates us, and fosters innovation and adaptation in business and technology.

Intentional community building is essential for fostering trust, friendship, and understanding across diverse groups of people. Joanna, from the discussion, created a shared space where individuals were brought out of their silos and bubbles to build meaningful connections. This is increasingly important in today's world where technology allows us to curate our virtual and physical environments to only include people we agree with or find comfortable. By intentionally putting ourselves in proximity to those different from us, we can create a stronger, more beautiful community. The story of Joanna's community building efforts serves as a reminder that each of us has the power to make our own world a better place, regardless of external circumstances. Additionally, the business world also emphasizes the importance of innovation and adaptation, as seen in the stories of successful companies like Chobani and Drunk Elephant, and the advancement of technology, such as AI, which requires significant processing power and infrastructure, like Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

    • Creating a Culture of Community and CivilityCrossCountry Dash values community and fosters a culture of civility and collaboration, emphasizing the importance of meaningful connections for exceptional talent and business growth.

CrossCountry Dash Consulting is a unique advisory firm that values creating a better experience for their people and attracts exceptional talent by fostering a distinct culture. Their collaborative approach as a strategic partner helps businesses generate value. The concept of "porching" emphasizes civility and community, where leaders invite diverse individuals for meaningful connections. I learned from this discussion that even introverts need community and that the purpose of such interactions may not always be clear but is valuable for its own sake. The front porch has evolved into a more curated and fenced-in environment, but the original concept of welcoming strangers and neighbors is worth reviving for its immeasurable benefits. CrossCountry embodies this idea by fostering a culture of civility, collaboration, and community.

    • The Porching Revival: Rebuilding Community ConnectionThe Porching Revival encourages people to reconnect with neighbors, build stronger communities, and increase civility through small changes like spending time on the front porch.

The shift from communal front porches to individualistic homes, driven by technologies like television and air conditioning, has led to a decrease in civility and community connection. However, the porching revival is a rebellion against this trend, encouraging people to reconnect with their neighbors and build stronger communities. Civility, it seems, is an output of community rather than an input, and focusing on community-building can lead to greater civility. It's important to remember that socializing is essential for a full life, but it's crucial to find the right balance and give yourself time to recharge. The Porching revival is a reminder that small changes, like spending time on the front porch, can lead to significant positive outcomes for individuals and communities.

    • A unique advisory firm helping businesses overcome challenges and create valueCrossCountry Consulting Group fosters relationships to provide exceptional service and enable clients to see opportunities, emphasizing the importance of communication and engagement in solving complex issues

CrossCountry Consulting Group is a unique advisory firm that helps businesses overcome challenges and create value through tailored integrated solutions in accounting, risk, technology, and transactions. They are committed to providing exceptional service by fostering a distinctive culture that attracts top talent. The firm serves as a strategic partner, enabling clients to see potential opportunities and generate value for their businesses. The speaker also reflected on the human question of coexisting amidst competing visions and the importance of cultivating relationships, whether in personal or professional contexts. He emphasized the need for vigilance and attentiveness to maintain these relationships and encouraged individuals to take the risk to bring people together, fostering innovation and civility. In essence, the solution to many complex issues lies in our willingness to engage with one another and communicate effectively.

    • The importance of community and meaningful connectionsTechnology for constant communication can leave us feeling disconnected, but platforms like Porch offer solutions for both virtual and physical connection. Prioritize and invest in meaningful community interactions for a richer life.

The relationship between community and communication is inextricably linked, and the use of technology for constant communication, despite its prevalence, can leave us feeling disconnected and impoverished in important ways. This was particularly evident during the pandemic when virtual interactions couldn't replace the corporeal presence and magic of being with others in person. The platform Porch offers a solution by allowing for both virtual and physical connection, highlighting the importance and irreplaceability of being present with others. It's crucial to prioritize and invest in meaningful community interactions, whether in person or virtually, to enrich our lives and foster genuine connections. Additionally, sponsors BetterHelp and Picasso, as well as Cambridge's Parity Flex Annuity, offer valuable resources to improve mental health and co-owning a luxury vacation home, respectively.

The War On The Young with professor Scott Galloway

The War On The Young with professor Scott Galloway

Building wealth is an unequal pursuit. Scott Galloway believes no one is getting more screwed financially than young people.

Scott argues what the U.S. is doing to the economic future of its youth is nothing less than a war on the young. The massive transfer of wealth from young to old is a topic he explores in his new book The Algebra of Wealth

I was delighted to have Prof G back on the show to share what's been on his mind lately, and enjoyed veering far off topic to discuss love, money, and the nature of true friendship.

Moral Courage with Diane Foley, mother of executed journalist James Foley

Moral Courage with Diane Foley, mother of executed journalist James Foley

Seven years after ISIS killed her son, Diane Foley met with one of his killers. Somehow, she was able to find the humanity in her son's murderer.

ISIS held journalist James Foley hostage for 2 years before publicly executing him in 2014, when they uploaded a YouTube video of James's beheading. After her son's murder, Diane Foley started The Foley Foundation, working to free American hostages held abroad, teach journalist safety, and inspire people to act with moral courage.

I asked Diane how she found the moral courage to meet ISIS terrorist Alexanda Kotey and see him as a human being. If Diane could find the grace to connect with her son's murderer, the rest of us can find the moral courage to see the good in those with whom we so vehemently disagree.

Humble Confidence with veteran and entrepreneur Blake Hall

Humility stems from confidence. Confident leaders can admit when they're not the smartest person in the room.

Blake Hall exemplifies the type of leadership we need more of in business. A former Army Ranger, Blake was awarded the Bronze Star for leading his platoon in combat during the Iraq War. Now he's the CEO and co-founder of ID.me, a digital wallet that simplifies online identity verification.

I sat down with Blake to discuss how his combat experience informed his journey as an entrepreneur and why the smartest leaders lead with humility.

The Ultimate Infinite-Minded CEO with Trek Bicycle CEO John Burke

The jump from $250 million to $2 billion in revenue doesn't happen overnight. Over 25 years, John Burke transformed Trek Bikes into a global powerhouse — one mom-and-pop bike store at a time.

The key to John's success is simple but powerful. Create value for others first, and you too shall be rewarded.

John and I discuss why the best way to win isn't to focus on "winning," but to focus on "play," and how the principles of The Infinite Game have guided his leadership. And he tells me why creative leadership is exactly what's missing in American government.

Be Necessary with war journalist Sebastian Junger

Be Necessary with war journalist Sebastian Junger

War reporters risk their lives to document conflict. And yet, after a career living on battlefields, Sebastian Junger's closest brush with death was surviving an aneurysm.

Sebastian's story of his sudden internal hemorrhage and making sense of what he saw while dying is the subject of his new book In My Time of Dying. As someone who usually writes as an outside observer, it's an atypical and personal exploration of death.

I was privileged to speak with Sebastian about the fragility of life and why being necessary to others is one of our highest needs of all.

The Definition of Success with author Neil Strauss

The Definition of Success with author Neil Strauss

In 2005, Neil Strauss published The Game, a book about his years living in the pickup artist community. The Game sold millions of copies, stirred up huge controversy, and made Neil a bestselling author.

Neil has totally reinvented himself since writing The Game, and I wanted to talk with him about walking away from that identity of success. This led to a much deeper conversation about what success even is. Is meaning tied to outcomes, or is intention enough?

Neil and I don't see eye-to-eye on everything in this conversation, but I love talking with him because he challenges my ideas. I hope this episode challenges you as well, to continue questioning what the definition of success should be.

Happily Friended with author Rhaina Cohen

Happily Friended with author Rhaina Cohen

Society treats marriage like the end goal of human intimacy. Platonic friends can never be as important as romantic partners.

What would life look like if we made friendship the goal? Journalist and producer Rhaina Cohen tackles this question in her book The Other Significant Others. She tells the stories of people who made platonic friends the closest people in their lives, doing things together like buying houses, executing a will, and raising children.

I wanted to talk with Rhaina because redefining what friendship means in our lives lets us connect in new and deeper ways outside the rigid boundaries of a marriage or relationship. And it might take the pressure off our romantic partners to fulfill every one of our social needs.
