Conspiracy in Canton: Episode 4 - Fighting For Technology

Anyone who has spent any time watching true crime can tell you technology is one of the primary ways law enforcement agencies are able to solve crimes. Location data, surveillance videos, call records, even health apps are all just one subpoena away from providing authorities with a second by second timeline of your every move. Witnesses may be unreliable, but data doesn’t lie.

There have been a lot of things we’ve talked about so far that have raised some questions throughout the initial phases of this investigation. Like everything else involved here, there are issues. There seem to be roadblocks at every corner for the defense when it comes to getting the data and records they are requesting. The controversial case of Karen Read gets more interesting as we take a look at the searches done following John’s death. One of the largest blizzards in Boston history was moving in, causing less than ideal conditions for a search. The first search, with only a couple of inches of snowfall on the ground and daylight working in their favor, turned up broken cocktail glass pieces and 6 drops of frozen blood. SERT team comes in 12 hours later, after 2 feet of snow has fallen and the sun has set, and they suddenly find pieces of Karen’s tail light AND John’s missing shoe. Is this coincidence? Or conspiracy?

It’s one of the most polarizing cases in true crime right now. A 16 year veteran of the Boston Police Department, left to die in one of the biggest blizzards in Massachusetts history. Prosecution has charged his girlfriend, 42 year old Karen Read, with his murder, claiming she hit him with her car during a fight and left him to die in the cold. The defense says Read is being framed, set up to take the fall by one of the most powerful families in this Boston suburb- all to protect one of their own.

There are discrepancies in statements, missing camera footage, and deep family ties to everyone from the lead investigator, to the attorney general’s office, to the judge. With every new piece of evidence, a new controversy arises.

In episode one, we will do an introduction to this case, paying attention to the timeline and the immediate discrepancies in statements and court documents. We will look at the theories presented by both sides, along with the evidence that supports and contradicts it. We will dig into what it is about this case that has social media so split, and why each side is so passionate in their beliefs. During this season, we will take a deep dive into the evidence- one controversial piece at a time- analyzing both sides in hopes of discovering the truth, and finally seeing justice for John O’Keefe.

In 2020 (eight years later) she runs into Gareth at an awards show and his obsession is reignited. Weeks later, Gareth breaks into Amie's home, resulting in her death after dropping from a third floor balcony. While he admits to breaking in, he denies killing her.

13 year old Cristina Pangalagan was left in a hot car in August in Colleton South Carolina for more than five hours, resulting in her death. Her mom, Rita, had been named 2014 Teacher of the Year in Walterboro’s Black Street Early Education Center. Rita said she went to her boyfriend Larry’s house and accidentally left Cristina in the car. Video obtained from Larry’s house, however, showed that they had taken Cristina in the house with them, then took her back out to the car and left her there for hours, even leaving the house in another car and returning home later.

Cristina was born with severe intellectual and physical disabilities that left her unable to verbally communicate, and she was confined to a wheelchair, leaving her unable to remove herself from the hot car.

Now Rita Pangalangan and her boyfriend Larry King will stand trial in Judge Clifton Newman’s courtroom for Cristina’s death.
