    About this Episode

Welcome to episode 124 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast!

We’ve got something new for everyone this week. Ödyssey Swimrun Casco Bay is roughly eight weeks away and we thought it would be cool to do a show where we give everyone that’s on the fence about trying Swimrun (or help anyone that trying to convince their friends to try Swimrun) a road map for prepping for this year’s Casco Bay short course. So welcome to “Couch to Casco.”

Joining us for this episode is literally the best person that we could ask to have this discussion with…none other than Purple Patch Coach/Ödyssey Swimrun Race Director and Casco Bay course designer/elite Swimrunner John Stevens. John’s been on the show multiple times and we pretty much bug him anytime we need some sage wisdom.

We are breaking up this discussion into three sections that will help any and all Swimrun-curious athletes to get a good understanding of what Casco Bay is all about. We discuss the Casco Bay short course, how to train for the race, and what gear you’ll want to have.

    Casco Bay Short Course

The Casco Bay Short Course is a great route for both beginners and experienced athletes. It is similar to some of the original Swimrun courses in Europe and it is a lot of fun! John designed the course and shared with us a course overview.

10.5 Mile Short Course Leg By Leg Breakdown:

Run 1: Little Diamond Island (.6 miles)

Swim 1: Little Diamond to Great Diamond (285 yds)

Run 2: Great Diamond Island (.45 miles)

Swim 2: Great Diamond to Peaks Island (775 yds)

Run 3: Peaks Island (3.1 miles)

Swim 3: Peaks to Cushing (975 yds)

Run 4: Cushing Island (3 miles)

Swim 4: Cushing to House (800 yds)

Run 5: House Island (.75 miles)

Swim 5: House to Peaks (725 yds)

Run 6: Peaks Island finish (350 feet)

    Training for Casco Bay

With the race eight weeks away at the time that this episode is released, athletes have plenty of time to get ready for a great Swimrun adventure. If you’re a triathlete in training then you are already in good enough shape to take on the short course. If you’re just getting started with training and have some swimming under your belt then you have plenty of time to get ready. While the overall distance may seem daunting, in our experience all the different legs alternating between swimming and running during a Swimrun make it easier on the body and it’s not like running for 10.5 miles or swimming that distance for that matter.

    Gear Considerations

While there is some specific gear for Swimrun, in general you can use any trail shoes that you already own and can take a used wetsuit and cut the legs above the knees and the arms above the elbow. The typical Swimrun kit consists of shoes, swim paddles, pull buoy, wetsuit, goggles, and a tether if you’re racing with a partner.

We have a lot of resources to help folks get the gear that they need to have a good experience. Check out the resources tab on our website and some of our previous Gear Talk episodes that cover a lot of the gear in detail. Finally, check out our Swimrun Swap Meet on facebook for used gear for sale or trade from fellow Swimrunners.

    Final Thoughts

We are firm believers that the best way to get hooked on Swimrun is to get out there and experience one. Casco Bay is one of the original Swimrun events in the U.S. and one of our favorites. Whether you’re in hardcore triathlon training mode or more a casual endurance athlete, participating in a Swimrun is a great way to use your training and try something different or challenge yourself in a safe and supportive environment.

If we accomplished our goal and you’re ready to sign up for Casco Bay, use the code “LOWTIDEBOYZ” that is good for 15% off of your registration.

Feel free to reach out to us if you have any other questions about Casco Bay or Swimrun in general.

Welcome to episode 216 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast!

Partners month 2024 continues this week with a new team formed for one righteous purpose: to race this year’s edition of ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship. Joining us in Studio G this week are our dear friends Addison Nuding and Phil Saenkov, A.K.A. Team “TBD.” In this conversation we chatted about how the team came together, how they are planning on training from afar, and what their goals are for the experience. We talk a lot on this show about the importance of teammates being aligned on their goals and this conversation is an inside look at that process.

    Team Feel The Byrn

    Team Feel The Byrn

Welcome to episode 213 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast!

In this episode we are kicking off our fourth annual Partners Month where we feature one of our favorite parts of Swimrun: the partner aspect. Kicking things off this year is the father and son duo of Team Feel The Byrn, A.K.A. Axel and Gordo Byrn. If the name Gordo sounds familiar, well it should! We spoke with Gordo back in Episode 138 and he is a wealth of knowledge on all things endurance training…and parenting. This was an awesome conversation and we can wait to share it with all of you.

    But first…

Brief History of LTBz’s Partners Month

In early 2021, we were sitting in Studio G talking about content when one of us came up with the idea to feature partners for Valentine’s Day. One thing led to another and Partners Month was born. (Friendly reminder: if you’re a solo Swimrunner, that’s cool too!)

In that first year, we featured Team Max Mockermann, The Adorkables, The Monks, and did a Swimrun 201 show on Team Tactics

In 2022, we featured Team Mr. and Mrs. B, The Kancho Boyz, a Swimrun 101 show on Partners (Redux), and our most downloaded show ever, Team Kraken Swimrun.

Last year we interviewed Team Strömgren, Team Monkey Sea Monkey Run, Team Landshark, and shared a masterclass on effective teamwork with Brad Stulberg.

This year we have a bunch of great interviews lined up to get you in the spirit for another great year of Swimrunning!

    Shoutout

Our shoutout this week goes to our newest Patron on Patreon, James N. Thank you so much for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the races!

    Feats of Endurance

This week’s award goes to our friend Lucas Desmond. He completed his first World Loppet at the Marcialonga 51 over the weekend. Have no idea what we are talking about? Marcialonga is 70km cross country ski race in Moena Italy. According to Lucas, the race was amazing and the aid stations were the best he’d ever seen!

Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff.

    Show Business

Well it’s not really show business…but it is! Swimrun Christmas is on Friday, February 2nd. Best of luck to everyone vying for a spot at the 2024 ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship.

    Team Feel The Byrn

It was so great to kick off Partners Month with Axel and Gordo. In this conversation we talked about their race resume, how they train for Swimrun, got a steady stream of knowledge bombs on how to raise an active family, and so much more. We’ve made it no secret that a dream of ours is to someday do a Swimrun with our kids and Gordo shared a roadmap that we will certainly follow.

    Enjoy!

    Swimrun Troll Enez

    Swimrun Troll Enez

Welcome to episode 212 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast!

In this week’s episode we dive into our long bucket list of Swimrun events that we want to participate in and take you with us (figuratively) to the Gulf of Morbihan and present to you the award winning Swimrun Troll Enez. Co-race directors Laura, Renan, and Jocelyn join to tell us all about this amazing event.

    But first…

    Training Update

We’re STILL in the “building consistency” stage of training and STILL trying to be better at incorporating strength work earlier in the year. So far so good. There’s a decent amount of trail running in our future before Swimrun season kicks off for us so that will be fun.

    Shoutout

This week’s shoutout goes to friend of the show, David Trehane. He’s the race director for the new Studland Swimrun in the U.K. and this race looks epic! The race is taking place on June 15th and it’s filling up fast so don’t wait and sign up.

    Feats of Endurance

This week’s award goes to our friends The Kancho Boyz for finishing their 6-day bike ride in Thailand over the weekend. It was apparently crazy hot and humid but fun was still had by all.

Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff.

    Show Business

Are you a fan of the show? Do you appreciate our unique brand of super niche content? Then please consider taking a moment to help new people find the show by leaving a rating and review on your podcast platform of choice.

    Swimrun Troll Enez

It was super fun to chat with Laura, Renan, and Jocelyn about their labor of love, the Troll Enez Swimrun. As we mentioned at the start of the show, this race has been on our radar for a while and it’s only moved up our bucket list after this conversation. We chatted about the history of the race, got a course overview, and got their take on why Swimrun is taking off in France. Chris was literally dreaming about this race after recording the interview.

    Enjoy!

    We Swimrun Founder Mike Alexander

    We Swimrun Founder Mike Alexander

Welcome to episode 211 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast!

In this episode, we head across the pond to Wales for a proper chin wag with We Swimrun Founder, Mike Alexander. We met Mike in Sweden last year and hit it off right away while engaged in an exchange of laurels (We swim caps for LTBz buffs). We knew that we wanted to get him on the show and although it took us almost 4 months to make it happen…make it happen we did! This was a great chat and we can’t wait to share it with all of you.

    But first…

    Training Update

We’re at the “building consistency” stage of training and trying to be better at incorporating strength work earlier in the year.

    Shoutout

This week we’re shouting out our newest Patron on Patreon: Tim S. As far as we can tell he’s our first supporter from Denmark and we’re here for it! Thank you so much for the support Tim!

    Feats of Endurance

This week’s award goes to the California Swimrun folks of Andy, Phil, and crew. A They lined up for Elevation Culture’s SD50 Trail Runs over the weekend and all had stellar days out on the trails.

Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff.

    This Week in Swimrun

We have so many updates this week! Let’s get right to it.

After taking a year off, registration for Swimrun NC is open and this year’s race date will be October 13. We’re already registered for this event and can’t wait to be back at Hanging Rock State Park in North Carolina. (We’re also excited to go back to Carolina Zip Lines for some pre-race fun!)

New Podcast Alert! (Queue the air horn!) At long last there is another Swimrun podcast coming online soon. The Swimrun Show recently dropped their trailer on Spotify and will be hosted by today’s guest, Mike Alexander from We Swimrun.

New Race Alert! The Mudskipper Swimrun Challenge is taking place at Deam Lake, Indiana on May 12th and is offering a “Mini” 10 mile and a “Classic” 18 mile distance options along with open water swims and a trail 5km run. The event looks like fun and yay! more Swimrun events!

In ÖTILLÖ news, there are three key updates to fill everyone in.

First, ÖTILLÖ announced their merit race list for 2024. Notably absent are any merit races in North America. This is not entirely surprising given the stacked ÖTILLÖ USA race calendar for 2024 but still a bummer for long time local events Swimrun Lake James and Swimrun NC that used to be part of the program.

(LTBz Public Service Announcement: Just want to remind everyone that there are many hero journeys in the sport of Swimrun and qualifying and racing the World Championship is just one of many. We highly encourage everyone to continue to support local, grass-roots events to help grow the base of the sport.)

Second, ÖTILLÖ announced a new event in North America: ÖTILLÖ Whistler. You might remember that at around this time last year we were super stoked about Swimrun Whistler announcing their new event, only to see it postponed a month or so later. We’ll it’s back and we’re here for it! ÖTILLÖ Whistler will take place on Sunday, July 7th and will offer Experience, Sprint and World Series Distance options.

Finally, registration is open for all 2024 ÖTILLÖ USA events. This is a big year for Swimrun in North America and we hope to see you out at the races!

A Proper Chin Wag with Mike Alexander

It was really great to chat with Mike. His passion for Swimrun is infectious and he gave us a tour of We Swimrun’s events, what he thinks the future looks like for Swimrunning in the U.K., and so much more. Needless to say it was a proper chin wag. We know that you’ll love this conversation as much as we did.

    Enjoy!

    Fanny Kuhn

    Fanny Kuhn

Welcome to episode 209 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast!

It’s a new year and we’re stoked to kick it off with one of our favorite humans and Swimrunner extraordinaire, Fanny Kuhn. If you aren’t familiar with Fanny, she is a two-time Swimrun World Champion, Co-founder of Wild Swimrun, and is basically Swimrun royalty. We can’t think of a better guest to start year 4 of the podcast.

    But first…

    Training Update

The holidays are over and it’s time to get back into the routine. We will ideally be hitting the pool 3-4 times and running 3-4 times per week. Our Swimrun season will likely kick off at ÖTILLÖ Engadin (join us!) so we’ll start getting “serious” in late February.

    Shoutout

Our shoutout this week goes to the country of Germany. It recently passed Canada to reach 4th place in our total downloads per country metrics. Thank you to all the German Swimrunners out there checking out the show. Vielen Dank!

    Feats of Endurance

This week’s award goes to our friend Mara Tynan. She hiked (and camped) across Catalina Island over three days and everything looked epic…even the bison poop. Strong work!
