What a pleasure to interview one of New Jersey's finest, Dennis Diken, drummer/VOX of The Smithereens. Dennis is so cool, so easy going, the kind of guy who could be your next door neighbor. My mission is to expose The Smithereens for the upcoming event, "The Fest" http://TheFest.com in N.Y.C. Feb. 7th - 9th and the release of their NEW CD, “The Smithereens Play The Beatles Washington, D.C. February 11, 1964 Concert.” It is a huge "Beatlemania" event and this event coming up Feb. 7th - 9th is extra special because it marks the 50th anniversary of The Beatles coming to America, appearing on the Ed Sullivan show and their first concert on American soil in Washington, DC. The Smithereens will be playing the full exact song by song set that The Beatles played at the DC concert at The Fest. "The 'Reen's" do The Beatles so well but still sound like The Smithereens covering Beatles's songs. Dennis and Jim became friends the first day of high school when Dennis had his vision of having his own band but he needed a guitar player who liked "The Who" and noticed another student opening up his composition book with "The Who" pictures and band related things. This student was sitting in row one, seat one, front center, that was Jim Babjak, lead guitarist/writer/VOX. They have been best friends ever since. Isn't that a great story!
