你能相信吗？这是《茶歇中文播客》第一次给大家介绍 “茶文化”。4000多年前，神农在尝试各种植物时中毒，吃了茶叶之后，恢复健康。从此，人们开始喝茶。在中国，“荼” 和 “茶” 字通用，在不同地区有不同的发音。唐朝以来，喝茶成为中国人的习惯。再后来，茶去了亚洲别的国家，还去了欧洲。欧洲人把茶叶看作是很珍贵的饮料。在今天的中国，年轻人越来越喜欢喝咖啡。茶渐渐地以奶茶的形式进入年轻人的生活。

Can you believe that? This is the first time that we talk about "tea culture" at TeaTime Chinese. 4,000 years ago, Shennong was poisoned whilst he was tasting different herbs. After accidentally eating tea leaves, he recovered from poisoning. From then on, people started drinking tea. In China, "Tu" and "Cha" are interchangeable, and are pronounced differently in different regions. Since the Tang Dynasty, drinking tea has become a daily habit for the Chinese people. Later on, tea went to other Asian countries, before it went to Europe. In Europe, people saw tea as a precious beverage. Today, young Chinese people have a preference for coffee. Tea remains in young people's lives in the form of milk tea.

The world is changing every day with ever advancing technologies. Though all tech companies promise to bring people closer than ever before, we are seeing a growing population of young people feeling lonelier than ever before. Suicides caused by social media is rising. Where are these technological advancements leading us toward?

February 10th, 2024 (Saturday) is the traditional Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival. For many people, this is a time for relatives and friends to sit around the dinner table and enjoy good food. Since ancient times, writing Spring Couplets, igniting firecrackers and having New Year's Eve dinner have been indispensable customs for the Chinese people. Today, watching the "Spring Festival Gala" has become a habit for many Chinese families. Besides, in many places in Asia, people celebrate the Spring Festival in their unique ways, in anticipation of the coming of spring.

China has a long history. For thousands of years, Chinese characters faithfully recorded the lives and thinkings of emperors and peasants, and is undoubtedly one of the riches of Chinese civilization. Today, I will tell you a few stories surrounding the history of the Chinese characters. They are "Cangjie invented the hieroglyphs", "Cai Lun invented the paper" and the rediscovery of the Oracle Bone Script in 1899, etc.

On November 29th, 2023, American politician, diplomat Henry Kissinger passed away at the age of 100. Xi Jinping said that: He (Kissinger) is an old friend of the Chinese people. His two secret visits to China paved the way for Nixon's visit. Along the many years, he advocated for China and America to coexist peacefully. He has become the symbol of Sino-US friendship. However, many people remain critical of him, the biggest factor being that he directed "secret bombings" in Cambodia in the Vietnam War. Today, let's look at Henry Kissinger's life.

Years later, he founded his own religion, and when believers increased he decided to establish his own kingdom, where he was king. His name was Hong Xiuquan, and the kingdom was the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. The aim was to overthrow the Qing Dynasty, so that every Chinese would live equally under heaven. Is such a dream achievable?

Sun Wukong (a.k.a. the Monkey King), a monkey with 72 powers, is one of the most important mythological figures. His "Havoc in Heaven" story is known to all. Living peacefully in his earthly paradise, his life is disturbed by the Jade Emperor from Heaven, who attempts to control him by making him work. The Monkey King wants nothing but freedom. He fights against the Jade Emperor, and causes Havoc in Heaven.

If we want to understand the political relationships between two countries, it is pivotal to understand what happened between them. Between China and Vietnam, there is a fascinating history. In this episode, we will go back to 2000 years ago, to see how Vietnam, this neighbor of China, was born. We will see that Vietnam was once under Chinese rule. Then, Vietnamese people through their rebellion fought back, and established their own nation. After WWII, China helped North Vietnam against South Vietnam. After the Vietnamese War, conflict broke out between the 2 countries… There are peaceful and tumultuous epochs in our common history. Cultural similarities is what helps the two people understand each other, and bond friendships.

Today, no matter where you are in the world, you will see Chinese people and hear the Chinese language spoken. 200 years ago, Chinese people set foot on America. The "Gold Rush" attracted tens of thousands of Chinese people to look for fortune in the new continent. In the city of San Francisco, Chinese immigrants formed the culturally fascinating Chinatown, which has since become a tourist attraction. Though much turmoil in life, they didn't give up hope.
