    About this Episode

"This is not a self-help book. This is the story about a young woman so full of my own grief that I was ready to meet death because I could not figure out how to deal with it. This is my story, told in five parts."

Meet Denayja Reese - author, producer, strategist, writer, host and FIA woman. This week the FIA Podcast went IRL - live audience, and all, OKKKK, - to talk with Denayja about her FIA moment(s), healing through grief, trauma, and addition, cultivating wellness, the radical act of sustainable and systemic self care (YES!), and how creativity and the power of story will change the world.

This conversation picks up after a live screening of Denayja's visual memoir, "Don't Hurt Yourself: A Visual Memoir Of Healing Through Grief, Trauma & Addiction." Her book and accompanying short film are the culmination and creative expression of her lived and learned experiences of healing following the abrupt and unexpected death of her mother at 18 years old.

In Denayja's words, "I have healed in places in which I thought I would bleed forever. I believe that you can too."

If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts or a crisis, please reach out immediately to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255.

This week, we sit down with Lisa Cunningham, Director of the I AM Docuseries, Professional Storyteller and Digital Content Creator, Activist, and Founder of Take What You Need.

In 30-ish minutes, Lisa shares her story of pivoting - or in her words the REMIX 🎶 - from her successful career in the entertainment industry, directing and producing music videos with the stars, to becoming a digital content and creative director dedicated to advocacy work within health, LGBTQ+ and DEI initiatives.

We laugh about how we all met speaking 🎤 on a panel at Sundance in Utah when we all live just miles apart in Atlanta, GA. And we discuss, how that meeting eventually led us to pitch the I AM Series to Lisa. And with all her superpowers and experience in tow, she excitedly said "yes" and joined as a Director.

Our conversation ends with IMPACT and HOPE. ✨

We touch on Lisa's recent personal project, Take What You Need.  *This is retail therapy in its truest form!* The online brand sport wellness wearables in which your purchase is an investment in a lifestyle that focuses on your well-being and uplifting others. I AM Radio: Embracing Contradiction with Jean Franzblau

I AM Radio: Embracing Contradiction with Jean Franzblau

This week, Kacie and Katie "cuddle up" with Jean Franzblau, a woman who boldly embraces contradiction in her exploration of pleasure and power.

Jean is the Founder of the Cuddle Sanctuary, an Intimacy Professional for TV, film, and theater, a Speaker on consent and sex-positive education, a Writer, and a Performer.

We had the pleasure (this description will be riddled with puns, so strap in or on!) of meeting Jean last year through a mutual friend in the "film biz." We said, "The intersection of pleasure and power..." and she said, "Jean." After our first call, she enthusiastically signed on to the I AM Docuseries.

In this conversation, Jean leads us through her personal story and lived experience as she always does - with vulnerability and humor. And what's a good story without a little drama?! Theater drama that is. Jean shares how her work with PLEASURE has enabled her to step into her POWER and bring her most recent project to life -  "My Mother Doesn't Know I'm Kinky," a show written and performed by Jean herself!

Together - in 31 minutes - we discuss taboos, trauma, consent, creative outlets, healing, the power of community, middle-of-the-night wake-ups to question every decision we've ever made, drowning out the noise, betting on yourself, and JOY.

I AM Radio: Just Go For It with Ciera Thompson

I AM Radio: Just Go For It with Ciera Thompson

Welcome back to I AM Radio; and while you might love QT with your girls K+K, this week we’re joined by dear friend and fellow collaborator, Ciera Thompson.

And, the mantra of this week’s episode? Just go for it.

We got a front row seat to Ciera’s own bold moves a year ago when she seized the moment at Sundance to do what creatives, and entrepreneurs alike, do best - make something out of nothing.

    What do we mean?

Ciera wrote a script for a short film back in 2022. She was handed rejections, doubt - from others and self - and generally considered it a passion project she created for herself, but perhaps not a commercial success.

At Sundance, the question, “What are you working on?” kept coming up, and Ciera took the chance to boldly call herself what she was - a writer and filmmaker - working on a short about LGBTQIA+ youth.

It was as if she had a magic wand, manifesting potential out of thin air. She scored an agent and a funder by the time we left just a few days later.

By the end of the year, she ran an oversubscribed crowd-funding campaign, won Film Impact Georgia’s highest honor, and brought the film to life in the most beautiful and authentic way.

Hit play to listen along as she shares every last high and low of ‘just going for it,’ in this week’s episode of I AM Radio.

I AM: The Series is a six-part docuseries mapping stories to systems across the six most pervasive and tension-inducing themes permeating modern womanhood: Storytelling, Pleasure, Motherhood, Abortion, Money and Power.

All the topics guaranteed to make your next family holiday wildly entertaining!

Listen along as K+K give listeners a front row seat to what it's been like going from first-time entrepreneurs to first-time filmmakers - holy vulnerability hangovers and ego checks.

Join us next week as we sit down with Producer and Collaborator, Ciera Thompson. Oh yeah, did we mention, she was the woman who originally conceived turning the pod into a show?

Don’t worry, there’s a lot more FIA coming your way...

In the meantime, let’s welcome back Anastasia Simon for a special IRL edition of the FIA Podcast. Aside from being one of our most beloved guests on the show, she is the living embodiment of FIA energy using her positions of power and influence to challenge and change one of the most known toxic environments out there: startup hustle meets hypercapitalism.

Hit play to listen along as Anastasia recounts her first-hand experiences on the cost of capitalism; and what it might mean to flip the script from the inside-out, emphasizing that you don't have to be a hyper-capitalist to thrive in a capitalist society.

Sending big love from Kacie, Katie and every FIA woman who's been walking with us on this journey. We’re just getting started.

Glass Ceilings and Sticky Floors with Erica Rooney

Glass Ceilings and Sticky Floors with Erica Rooney

Glass Ceilings? Yep, got it. Sticky Floors? Now, that’s something new. Say more.

Meet Erica Rooney - keynote speaker, author, executive coach, work and culture expert, mother, executive, podcaster, and overall relatable FIA woman.

Erica’s work brings her face-to-face with the proverbial glass ceiling daily, yet it was her own lived and learned experiences that helped her understand that no matter how much you push against it, if you’re being held down by your own sticky floors, you’re going to stay exactly where you’ve always been.

Why do we love this conversation and ah-ha so much? Because it’s not just about doing the work on ourselves, but recognizing, naming, and understanding the systemic shortcomings of our work, family, and community systems - deeply rooted in gender bias and intersectional “isms.” (race, age, sex, etc.)

The parallels of Erica’s work in the professional sphere are mirrored in her own home life, where Erica and Kacie talk about the complexities and nuances that come with raising different gendered children side-by-side; and how our biases start the moment we come out of the womb. Motherhood and raising children was a catalyst for both women to reflect on their perpetuation of hustle culture, and ask the question - what do we want our kids’ world to look like?

Sobering and motivating - for parents, and those of us who are child-free, too. This is much more a conversation and reflection on just how deeply ingrained these biases are, even amongst the most ‘well-intentioned.’

This episode is a series of one thought-provoking nugget after the other. Small mic drops, and big ah-has that are best digested slowly. We recommend pausing as you go along, reflecting on your own opinions, feelings, thoughts; and most importantly, how you will take these revelations to not only dream - but plot - against what you’ll bring to life in the new year.

    Enjoy.

Be as Big as You Are with Michelle Khouri

Be as Big as You Are with Michelle Khouri

Settle in and get ready to enjoy an intimate 1:1 with master storyteller and Queen of Audio herself - Michelle Khouri. Michelle’s work - from entrepreneur and trailblazer to fellow modern woman living in this moment in time - is to change the world through the power of sound.

We recently heard, “When we change what power sounds like, we change who has it.” (Samara Bay, Permission to Speak) No one understands that better than Michelle, and it’s why she became one of our very first calls when we started the FIA Podcast 3 years ago.

Audio was our chosen medium at the time, because since the beginning of time, what women have to say is qualified by how we look and show up. Removing the physical barrier of having to show up ‘perfect,’ and instead letting our voices tell our stories felt revolutionary, and like an act of defiance and activism in itself.

Thanks, Michelle, for the inspiration and believing eyes from day one. Michelle’s mantra, "Be as big as you are," is her rallying cry for women everywhere - a reminder that we're never told to embrace our full potential, to be unapologetically big in our ambitions and dreams; not to mention the physical space we occupy.

Michelle’s journey has been marked by a quest to balance both the masculine and feminine energies within herself. This pursuit hasn't always been easy, and it has angered - like viscerally, screaming, crying, throwing up angered -  those discomforted by her boldness. And through it all, she stands firm in her belief that there's no judgment in seeking harmony within yourself. You can begin to see why we love her so damn much.

Michelle advocates for taking small steps to enact profound change. This is especially true as we delve into the overwhelming societal pressure to want it all, particularly as it relates to marriage, children, and suburban living.

It was her own ah-ha that she was exhausting herself with trying to be small, that she chose a different path. She started listening to her own energies and honoring her intuition, even if it meant making unconventional choices. YAAAAS.

In this week’s episode, Michelle shares that she learned the importance of tending to wounds, addressing trauma, and truly understanding who she is and what she wants. #EveryoneShouldGoToTherapy. She talks about the value of not over-identifying with external markers of power, and finding strength in knowing oneself beyond oppressive societal expectations.

The Perks Look Different and Feel Better with Han Pham

The Perks Look Different and Feel Better with Han Pham

This is an extra special episode, and for anyone out there (cue all of us) wondering where to even start making a difference when the world feels so heavy, this episode is for you.

Today we have an incredibly inspiring guest who is disrupting the political world with her kickass group of highly informed citizens, Han Pham! Han is the Executive Director at Her Term. Her Term is a Georgia-based (woo!) initiative that focuses on using collaboration to elect women into office. They target winnable seats, recruit more women leaders to run for office, and equip their campaigns to win. And they have! They’ve been winning! ISN’T THAT INCREDIBLE?!

Before Her Term, Han was a force in the legal and startup world. But it was during her time in the corporate world that she had an eye-opening moment. She realized she was fighting for recognition, in the annoying way you fight for a parking spot 🙄. AND, all the while trying to climb the corporate ladder and collect those often empty “perks” management loves to dangle in front of employees. Once she realized she didn't really need the perks and she didn’t really want to fight so hard for this, she woke up and had an FIA moment. F*ck yeah!

During a sudden, and unjust BTW, restructuring, Han turned lemons into lemonade and took a stand for what she deserved. She negotiated an invaluable PAID year of dedicated time with her new baby, used any free time as a period of growth, and reflection that ultimately shaped her path to fight for what was right in politics. Even though she had multiple offers waiting for her in her industry, Han decided that she wanted something more, something that aligned with her passion for making a meaningful impact. That's when she joined Her Term, and from there, she quickly rose to become Executive Director in 2022.

At Her Term, they're not just about winning elections. They're about encouraging candidates to keep pushing forward, no matter the outcome. It's about recognizing the significance of the journey, win or lose, and the profound impact it has on the community.

Her Term's impact in turning Georgia blue is a testament to the collective effort and determination they bring to the table. And it's not just about politics; they provide crucial therapy for their candidates, recognizing the emotional toll that the binary nature of politics can take. It has us thinking about what politics would look like if this were a required service for every public servant?

Listen to Han's incredible journey to hear more about her resilience, empowerment, and her unwavering belief in the power of women's voices.

You don't want to miss it! AND, for all our Atlanta/Georgia friends, we invite you to support Her Term’s mission to bring more women into office as a part of the Can’t Wait Fundraiser on November 2nd. We are thrilled to be official partners and sponsors for this event, AND hope to see as many of you as possible there!

Can’t join, but still want to support? Consider donating whatever you can towards Her Term’s efforts - we personally love a monthly $50 contribution.
