Another common misunderstanding is that marriage exists for the purpose

of legitimizing sexual relations. Marriage should never be equated

with sex because sex is not the primary purpose of marriage. Sexual union

is not and never has been the same thing as marital union. Marriage is a

union that implies and involves sexual union as the establishment of a

blood covenant, a central obligation, and a pleasure (see 1 Cor. 7:3-5), but

the three are not the same.

First of all, marriage involves commitment. Sex has very little to do with

commitment; it is a 100-percent physical response to physiological and biochemical

stimuli. Sex is one expression of commitment in marriage, but it

never creates commitment. By itself, sex neither makes nor breaks a marriage.

Marriage is broader and deeper than sex, and transcends it. Marriage is perhaps

one percent sex; the rest is ordinary, everyday life. If you marry for

sex, how are you going to handle the other 99 percent?

For many years it has been a common belief that adultery breaks a marriage.

That is simply not true. Sex does not create a marriage, so how can it

break a marriage? Adultery is sin and, according to the Bible, the only

legitimate grounds for divorce for a believer. Even then it is not automatic.

Divorce is not mandatory in such instances. Adultery does not break the

marriage. Breaking the marriage is a choice.

Recognizing that sexual union and marital union are not the same is

absolutely essential to any proper understanding of marriage. It is also

essential in understanding divorce and remarriage. Marriage is bigger than,

distinct from, but inclusive of sexual union. Absence of sexual activity will

never unmake a marriage, nor will its presence alone turn a relationship

into a marriage. Marriage and sex are related but they are not the same.

The Potential Principle

The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom (Matthew

13:38a).

BOOK QUOTE: Understanding Your Potential [Chapter 1]

To understand your potential, let us look at one of the most powerful

elements in nature…the seed. If I held a seed in my hand and

asked you, “What do I have in my hand?” what would you say?

Perhaps you would answer what seems to be the obvious…a seed.

However, if you understand the nature of a seed, your answer would

be fact but not truth.

God created everything with potential, including you. He placed

the seed of each thing within itself (see Genesis 1:12), and planted

within each person or thing He created the ability to be much more

than it is at any one moment. Thus, everything in life has potential.

Nothing in life is instant. People think miracles are instant, but

they really are not. They are just a process that has been sped up.

Nothing God created is instant, because God does not operate in the

instant. He is a God of the potential principle. Everything begins as

potential.

He did not create a ready-made human race—the earth was not

given an instant population. God made one person—not a million

people. He started with one seed. Then from that one He created

another. Then He said to those seeds, “Bless you (that means, ‘You

have My permission’). Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the

earth.”

In Adam, God gave the earth a seed with the potential of

one…one hundred…one thousand…one million…. The five billion

people on the earth today were in that one man’s loins. God knew

that in Adam and Eve there were

enough people to fill the earth.

That’s the way God works. He

knows the potential principle

because He introduced it. It is

Him.

 No book about the purpose and power of

women would be complete without discussing the woman who

is considered the epitome of both womanhood and power: the

woman of Proverbs 31.

Some women don't even like to read this chapter of the Bible

because they are overwhelmed by all the things this woman is

supposed to be able to do. "Well, if I had a staff of servants

like she had, I could do all those things, too!" they exclaim. Yet

when we consider our exploration of God's purposes for the

woman from creation to redemption, and when we think about

how the woman has been set free to fulfill His purposes,

Proverbs 31 gives us tremendous perspective on what a

woman is meant to be. Let us not become overwhelmed when

reading about what this woman does and miss out on the

central message of who she is.

One of the themes that Proverbs 31 is trying to

communicate is this: The woman is a doer. She is a multitasker.

She is responsible for taking care of her husband, children,

home, job, talents, church commitments, charitable work, and

sometimes elderly parents. She is a helper and she is a leader.

She receives seed into her physical, emotional, psychological,

and spiritual wombs, incubates it, and then uses it to build and

transform the world around her.

However, while she is fulfilling all of these vital purposes in

the home and in the world, she must always remember that a

woman's first place is in God. Proverbs 31 reminds the woman,

"Don't neglect your relationship with God, and don't forget to

develop His character in your inner being as you go about

your extremely busy life."

It is much too easy to begin to overlook God when you are

taking care of so many other people and responsibilities. This

takes us full circle to what we learned about the woman at the

beginning of this book. The woman was created to be loved by

God and to have fellowship with Him as a spirit-being made in

His image. She was meant to reflect His character and likeness,

to represent His true nature. God created the woman to have

His moral characteristics within her inner being. She is not only

to resemble Him as a spirit, but also in these qualities. She was

designed to act and function as God does, in love and grace.

Therefore, Proverbs 31 is saying, "While you are doing what

God has called and gifted you to do, don't forget the

importance of His character in your life":

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far

more than rubies.

(v. 10)

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman

who fears the LORD is to be praised.

(v. 30)

Women need to realize that their relationship with the Lord

and the development of His character in their lives is an

essential foundation that will strengthen and sustain them in all

their activities and accomplishments. With continual refreshing

from the Lord, they can purposefully engage in their many

responsibilities and fulfill the exciting purposes God has for

them.

In some ways, a woman may derive her self-esteem from her

activities almost as much as a man derives his self-image from

his work. She wants to feel that she is valued for the

contribution she is making to her family and her community.

Yet because she is an emotional feeler, she places this need in

the context of her relationships and emotions, and so it is not

as easily recognized for what it is.

HOW TO BE AN EFFECTIVE SINGLE

These same seven gifts that Adam received from God are

also our legacy as human beings because we are all

descended from Adam. That which was lost or distorted

through Adam’s sin was restored through the blood of

Christ. If you want to be an effective single, follow God’s

list.

1) Image. God’s first gift to us as humans is His image.

The first thing you need is not to find somebody else, but

to find yourself. You need first to be secure in your own

self-image, and that is only found in God. If you don’t

know who you are, or if you have a poor sense of self-worth,

you have not yet tapped into the God-nature within

you and will probably be a liability to anyone you marry.

To marry without a strong sense of self worth and personal

identity means that you will spend your life trying to

become somebody, usually by attaching yourself to your

spouse’s identity. If your spouse also has an identity

problem, then you have double trouble. You need to know

who you are and be secure and complete and whole within

yourself before you get married. If you know who you are

—if you have a good self-image—you won’t need anyone in

order to be someone.

2) Function. God gave Adam a specific function and way

of operating. He said, “You know who you are, now here is

how you work: you function by speaking. Whatever you

say, will happen.” This principle is still true. Proverbs

18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue:

and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” God

designed us to function in such a way that what we speak

into our lives determines in large measure our environment

and circumstances. What we say about ourselves and our

situation influences our patterns of thought and belief, and

thereby tend to become self-fulfilling prophecies. Before

you even consider entering a long-term relationship with

someone, get your own tongue sorted out first. Understand

that whatever you speak regarding your personal

circumstances-positive or negative—will become true in

your life. Learn to speak positive and confident truth about

yourself before entering a long-term relationship. If you

know how you function, you won’t have to depend on

other people’s approval or other people’s resources in

order to make a living. You will be able to take care of

yourself using your own abilities, gifts, and talents.

3 ) Presence. Before he ever had or even needed the

presence of another human being, Adam enjoyed the

presence of God. In the garden of Eden Adam was in the

right environment to be protected from pollution and

corruption. God gave Adam His own presence, thus

establishing an eternal principle. The first presence you

need in your life is not the presence of a boyfriend or a

girlfriend, but the presence of God. Use your unmarried

years to get to know God. Pray, study God’s Word,

welcome the ministry of the Holy Spirit in your life, and

become intimately familiar with God’s presence. When a

prospective spouse finds you, he or she should find you in

Eden. Ultimately, the presence of God is all you, or any of

us, need. Marriage is never appropriate until you are so

complete within yourself and your relationship with God

that you do not need marriage in order to define yourself.

4) Work. God gave Adam meaningful work to do so that

he could become fully himself and manifest his fullest

potential. The Greek word for “work,” eregon, literally

means “to become.” When God placed Adam in the garden

and charged him to dress it and keep it, he was telling

Adam to “become” himself. In other words, Adam was to

manifest who he really was. God has the same purpose for

you. He wants you to become yourself and manifest who

you really are. He has hidden inside you a truly awesome

person with an awesome dream, an awesome vision, an

awesome design, and awesome abilities. Those qualities are

in latent form, and you must work to bring them out. Your

rst focus should be on becoming yourself, not on finding

another “self.”

meaningfully get along or fit into each other’s lives.

Marry someone that you are compatible with. It’s not

everybody you can get along with; it is not even every

Christian that you can marry. Let me give you a

practical example, there are some churches where

women do not wear earrings while there are some

other churches where men are allowed to wear

earrings. Imagine a man and a woman who go to

churches like these planning to get married. He has a

different belief from hers. Where will they be wed?

So, you need to check your spiritual compatibility. We

have basic fundamental differences not just in biblical

understanding but in our lives as well.

Also check simple things like compatibility in your

vision. Where are the two of you going? Are you

headed in the same direction? It is not every woman

that can marry a pastor. The calling of a pastor’s wife

is different from the calling of a business man’s wife,

and also different from that of a career man’s wife. If

you are a business man’s wife you must know how to

pray because in business there is no fixed income and

getting by every day, is by faith. Then on the other

hand, a pastor should not marry a business man’s wife

because in business everything is profit and loss, but

ministry is not about profit and loss; at least not in

monetary terms. In ministry, profit is counted by how

many people were blessed not how much money was

made. So marry someone that you are compatible

with.

I usually give this example, let’s assume that your

name is Jane and you have two suitors asking for your

hand in marriage and both have the name Michael

and your vision is to have an international choir that

will sing at the world cup and international events.

Who will you marry? Let me make it a bit clearer for

you. The first one goes by the name Michael Jackson

generally add value to your vision; his name just

being added to yours will open doors for you and

you marry? Marrying Michael Jackson would be a

major mistake while marrying Michael Tyson will

Once you have sorted out the issue of companionship, 

then you need to be sure you are compatible.

Compatibility does not necessarily mean that both of

you are similar and exactly the same, it simply means

that both of you can get along well, it means that you

are well-suited for or attuned to each other. It doesn’t

mean that we should be the same thing, that if I have

bow legs, she must also be bow-legged, that is not

what compatibility means.

Compatibility means that we can go together; that we

are well-matched. For instance your biro and the

biro-cover are compatible, when you are not using it,

it covers the main part of the biro-head, when you

want to use the ball point, then you would cover the

tail end of the pen with the biro cover and it would still

sit there perfectly while you write, that is

compatibility. It doesn’t, like I said earlier, necessarily

mean similarity, it simply means that both of you can

fit together. You might not be the same, for instance,

my wife likes cold food, I like hot food, it shouldn’t

cause a problem.

There are two things that make people quarrel in

marriage. First, it is when they, either or both are very

selfish people and are unwilling to adjust, because no

matter who you marry, no matter how compatible you

are, there will still be need for adjustment, but if both

of you are compatible the adjustment will be very

little, it won’t be stressful. Compatibility, like we have

established doesn’t mean that you won’t have to

adjust in some areas, but if both of you are not selfish

it will be easy for you to adjust.

The second reason why people quarrel excessively is

just total incompatibility that is when the two cannot

even get along at all, even concerning the smallest

things. They don’t ever see eye to eye on any issue;

totally incompatible. Ask yourself do we get along in

basic things? What are our simple basic values? How

do we treat people? How do we see life? Do we have

similar goals in life? Genesis 2:18 says;

“And the LORD God said, it is not good that the man

should be alone. I will make him an help meet”

That word is not one word it is two put together “help

meet”. What He was saying is I will make him a helper

that is suitable and adaptable . So it is not every one

that you can get along with. Compatibility is about

your ability to get along not necessarily your

similarity. For instance, if someone is quiet it doesn’t

mean he has to marry another quiet person; no he

might need to marry someone that can talk. They will

be more compatible because it means one party will

do more listening while the other will do more of the

talking. If both of you talk a lot who will listen? If both

of you are quiet who will talk?

It is not based on similarity but rather on our ability to

meaningfully get along or fit into each other’s lives.

Marry someone that you are compatible with. It’s not

everybody you can get along with; it is not even every

Christian that you can marry.
