Drive with professional racer Danica Patrick

    enDecember 12, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Alleviating fears of change with technology and skillsTechnology advances like electric vehicles with long ranges and skills development programs can help alleviate fears of change and create new opportunities

Change can bring fears and uncertainties, but with the advancements in technology, such as electric vehicles with impressive driving ranges, these fears can be alleviated. For instance, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 can get you to and from work all week on a single charge. Furthermore, investing in skills and education, like AARP's reskilling courses, can lead to second acts and new opportunities in life. Lastly, tenacity, grit, and drive are essential traits for success in any industry, and Danica Patrick, a trailblazer in motorsport, embodies these qualities. Despite being the only female driver in a male-dominated sport, she channeled her energy into new pursuits and continued to push herself, inspiring others to do the same.

    • Expecting the best and pushing oneselfExpecting the best of yourself, regardless of gender, can lead to great achievements despite challenges in male-dominated fields.

Having high expectations and pushing oneself to be the best, regardless of gender, can lead to great achievements. The speaker, a successful female racer, shared how her father's relentless pushing helped her become the fastest go-kart racer in her class and later, a successful IndyCar racer. However, being a female in a male-dominated sport brought additional challenges, such as heightened scrutiny and judgment. The speaker acknowledged the double standards and unfairness she faced but emphasized the importance of not seeing oneself as different and having the mindset to compete and expect to win. The Teddy Roosevelt quote "The man in the arena" was mentioned as a reminder that it's not about winning or losing but about being in the arena and competing with passion and determination. Young girls can learn from the speaker's experience that they too can achieve their goals by expecting the best of themselves and not isolating themselves based on their gender.

    • The significance of competing in the arenaCompeting in the arena, whether you win or lose, is a remarkable achievement that requires dedication and passion.

Being in the arena and competing, regardless of the outcome, is a significant achievement. The discussion emphasized that only a select few make it to the top in various competitive fields, like NASCAR or the Olympics. The drive to be in the arena and compete is admirable, and it's essential to remember the effort and dedication required to reach such levels. The documentary "Senna" illustrates this concept beautifully, showcasing the contrast between Ayrton Senna, who was driven by passion, and Alain Prost, who was solely focused on winning. While both had different approaches, it was Senna's passion that inspired and resonated with others, demonstrating the importance of competing for the love of the sport.

    • Embrace the journey and stay true to your valuesUpgrade to the next gen cloud for AI processing, stay authentic, and compete efficiently without skyrocketing costs

The drive to win in sports, business, or any endeavor is important, but finding joy and inspiration in the process is equally significant. Authenticity and love for what we do are the strongest energies we can put forth, resonating with others and leading to success. Whether it's starting a business from an unlikely source or attending a festival that empowers the next generation, embracing the journey and staying true to our values is essential. Remember, heroes are not just defined by their achievements, but also by their morals and ethics. So, strive for success, but don't forget to enjoy the ride. In the world of business, AI is a game-changer, and it demands significant speed and processing power. Upgrading to the next generation of the cloud, like Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, can help businesses compete without skyrocketing costs. By offering consistent pricing, high bandwidth, and superior data capabilities, OCI enables businesses to train AI models faster and more efficiently. Lastly, let's not forget the importance of being good people and setting our sights on more than just fame and fortune. Ambition is important, but it's crucial to consider the cost and focus on being authentic and true to our values.

    • Success comes with sacrifices, but are they worth it?Success may bring external achievements, but neglecting inner well-being can lead to misery. Consider long-term consequences and strive for balance.

Success often comes with difficult choices and compromises, but these sacrifices may not bring lasting happiness. The speaker shares his experience in racing, where he felt the need to be ruthless and manipulative to advance, but it didn't resonate with his values. He uses the analogy of weightlifting and steroids, where winning requires breaking the rules, but at what cost? The speaker argues that even the most successful people can be miserable because they focus too much on external achievements and ignore their inner well-being. He warns that the highs of success are often followed by lows, and the only person we have to live with is ourselves. Ultimately, it's essential to consider the long-term consequences of our actions and strive for a balance between personal ambition and inner peace.

    • The infinite game of life requires continuous learning and growthUnderstanding the patterns in our lives and recognizing the trade-offs between personal ethics, fame, and fortune can help us stay in the game and grow as individuals.

Life is a series of experiences, some good and some bad, and the trade-offs we make shape who we become. The speaker shares his desire for excitement and the idea that there's a reciprocal trade-off for everything, whether it's fame, fortune, or personal ethics. He also discusses the importance of understanding the patterns in our lives and recognizing how they reflect our own values and actions. The speaker believes that people are drawn to stories of complex characters like Iheart and Senna because they resonate with the good in people and the inherent desire to excel, even if it means competing against ourselves. Ultimately, the infinite game of life requires us to stay in the game, to continually learn and grow, even when it means slowing down and reconfiguring our approach.

    • Embrace a continuous learning mindsetInvesting in personal growth through learning and reflection, rather than solely focusing on winning, can lead to improved performance and success

Allowing for breaks and moments of reflection, just like the lumberjack sharpening his ax, is essential for personal growth and improved performance. This concept, known as an infinite mindset, encourages individuals to view life as a continuous learning process rather than a race to be the best. This was exemplified by Rick Elias, who transformed his leadership style after a near-death experience, focusing on becoming a better version of himself rather than winning at all costs. This mindset led him to build a $6 billion company. Remember, taking time to recharge is crucial for a full life. As Guy Raz, host of How I Built This, emphasizes, behind every successful business lies a surprising story. These stories often include moments of doubt and failure, but it's the entrepreneurs' ability to learn and adapt that ultimately leads them to the top.

    • Empowering HBCU scholars and encouraging personal growth at Nissan's eventNissan's event empowers HBCU scholars, offers podcast pitch opportunities, and promotes a mindset of finding happiness and contentment in life beyond winning

Nissan is not only making this year's event more incredible for attendees by empowering HBCU scholars and providing opportunities for podcast pitches, but they also encourage a mindset of playing the infinite game of life, where self-worth is not solely defined by winning or being in the arena. Instead, it's about finding happiness and contentment. A specific example given was the speaker's first race at Martinsville, where they didn't win but found joy in the challenge and experience. Nissan's involvement in the community and encouragement of personal growth make this year's event a must-attend.

    • The Thrill of Improvement and Overcoming ChallengesThe joy and pride in achievement come from progress made and challenges overcome, not just the end result.

The joy and pride in achievement come not only from the end result but also from the progress made and the challenges overcome. The speaker shared two stories - one about finishing 11th at Martinsville after starting poorly, and another about catching five fish on his first fishing trip. Both stories highlight the thrill of improvement and the delta between the starting point and the end result. The speaker's racing career is an example of remarkable improvement, despite facing numerous obstacles and setbacks. The focus on the journey and the progress made, rather than just the end result, is a valuable perspective that can inspire and motivate others.

    • Understanding our personal growth and journeyRecognizing our journey and effort brings joy and self-worth, focusing on growth rather than comparing to others leads to increased self-worth and appreciation for unique journeys.

Understanding where we come from and recognizing our personal growth can bring immense joy and self-worth. This idea was expressed during a conversation about the appeal of documentaries and podcasts, which allow us to see the whole story instead of just the highlight reel. The speaker emphasized that it doesn't matter if we're at the front or back of the pack; what truly matters is recognizing our journey and the effort we've put in to get where we are. This perspective can be applied to all aspects of life, including personal relationships. The speaker encouraged listeners to focus on their growth rather than comparing themselves to others, as the joy comes from constantly striving to be better than our past selves. This mindset can lead to increased self-worth and a greater appreciation for our own unique journeys.

The War On The Young with professor Scott Galloway

The War On The Young with professor Scott Galloway

Building wealth is an unequal pursuit. Scott Galloway believes no one is getting more screwed financially than young people.

Scott argues what the U.S. is doing to the economic future of its youth is nothing less than a war on the young. The massive transfer of wealth from young to old is a topic he explores in his new book The Algebra of Wealth

I was delighted to have Prof G back on the show to share what's been on his mind lately, and enjoyed veering far off topic to discuss love, money, and the nature of true friendship.

Moral Courage with Diane Foley, mother of executed journalist James Foley

Moral Courage with Diane Foley, mother of executed journalist James Foley

Seven years after ISIS killed her son, Diane Foley met with one of his killers. Somehow, she was able to find the humanity in her son's murderer.

ISIS held journalist James Foley hostage for 2 years before publicly executing him in 2014, when they uploaded a YouTube video of James's beheading. After her son's murder, Diane Foley started The Foley Foundation, working to free American hostages held abroad, teach journalist safety, and inspire people to act with moral courage.

I asked Diane how she found the moral courage to meet ISIS terrorist Alexanda Kotey and see him as a human being. If Diane could find the grace to connect with her son's murderer, the rest of us can find the moral courage to see the good in those with whom we so vehemently disagree.

Humility stems from confidence. Confident leaders can admit when they're not the smartest person in the room.

Blake Hall exemplifies the type of leadership we need more of in business. A former Army Ranger, Blake was awarded the Bronze Star for leading his platoon in combat during the Iraq War. Now he's the CEO and co-founder of ID.me, a digital wallet that simplifies online identity verification.

The key to John's success is simple but powerful. Create value for others first, and you too shall be rewarded.

Be Necessary with war journalist Sebastian Junger

War reporters risk their lives to document conflict. And yet, after a career living on battlefields, Sebastian Junger's closest brush with death was surviving an aneurysm.

Sebastian's story of his sudden internal hemorrhage and making sense of what he saw while dying is the subject of his new book In My Time of Dying. As someone who usually writes as an outside observer, it's an atypical and personal exploration of death.

I was privileged to speak with Sebastian about the fragility of life and why being necessary to others is one of our highest needs of all.

The Definition of Success with author Neil Strauss

The Definition of Success with author Neil Strauss

In 2005, Neil Strauss published The Game, a book about his years living in the pickup artist community. The Game sold millions of copies, stirred up huge controversy, and made Neil a bestselling author.

Neil has totally reinvented himself since writing The Game, and I wanted to talk with him about walking away from that identity of success. This led to a much deeper conversation about what success even is. Is meaning tied to outcomes, or is intention enough?

Neil and I don't see eye-to-eye on everything in this conversation, but I love talking with him because he challenges my ideas. I hope this episode challenges you as well, to continue questioning what the definition of success should be.

Happily Friended with author Rhaina Cohen

Happily Friended with author Rhaina Cohen

Society treats marriage like the end goal of human intimacy. Platonic friends can never be as important as romantic partners.

What would life look like if we made friendship the goal? Journalist and producer Rhaina Cohen tackles this question in her book The Other Significant Others. She tells the stories of people who made platonic friends the closest people in their lives, doing things together like buying houses, executing a will, and raising children.

I wanted to talk with Rhaina because redefining what friendship means in our lives lets us connect in new and deeper ways outside the rigid boundaries of a marriage or relationship. And it might take the pressure off our romantic partners to fulfill every one of our social needs.
