Alan Kolok, Professor of Ecotoxicology, has an undergraduate degree from Miami University, and advanced degrees from the University of Washington the University of Colorado.  As an academic scientist, he currently holds positions at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the University of Idaho. He has published over 95 peer-reviewed articles and two books, including Modern Poisons: A Brief Introduction to Contemporary Toxicology, and Twist, a science fiction novel that focuses on self-replicating prions that have gone terribly wrong. He is in the process of writing his third book, Generally Regarded as Safe: A Century of Synthetic Chemicals.

Guest Bio:

Formerly a business owner in the fashion industry, Renee made a conscious decision to redirect her career towards advocating for positive environmental change. Following her passion for sustainable gardening, Renee earned a master’s degree in plant science/agriculture from Cal Poly Pomona and combined that with a bachelor’s in entrepreneur business from the University of Southern California, setting off to work in the native nursery and restoration business.  As sales director of a prominent San Diego native plant nursery, Renee observed the need for native plant education to her community. She began presenting and teaching courses independently, through community nurseries and with the California Native Plant Society. In addition, she began an ongoing restoration research with and indigenous tribal land establishing native trees on exposed playa at the Salton Sea.

Renee’s journey took a captivating turn when her research was noticed by an environmentally focused biotech company in the Bay Area. Her dedication to making a larger impact cleaning up contaminated sites using nature-based solutions and sustainable practices within the remediation industry as an environmental scientist. Renee has served as a project manager on sites implementing innovative nature-based sustainable solutions for contaminated, fire and salt impacted sites, utilizing cutting-edge endophyte-assisted phytotechnology.

In her current role as Sales Director of Intrinsyx Environmental, Renee’s journey bridges her diverse background with the mission of building an innovative biotech phytoremediation company using nature to heal our environment. Renee has delivered impactful presentations to esteemed audiences, including NASA Ames Green Team, Sustainable Silicon Valley, Alaska Forum for the Environment, National Brownfields Training Conference, and an international keynote at NICOLA.org 2022 Resiliency, Nature & Climate Solutions in South Africa.

Renee continues to teach propagation and native plant workshops online and throughout the state of California inspiring people to change their environment starting in their own backyard.  Join Renee on her mission to inspire people to change their environment for the better!

Guest Bio:
Dr. Prager is a marine scientist and author, widely recognized for her expertise and ability to make science entertaining and understandable for people of all ages. She currently works as a freelance writer, consultant, and Chief Scientist for StormCenter Communications, Inc. She was previously the science advisor for Celebrity Cruises in the Galapagos Islands, Chief Scientist for the Aquarius Reef Base program in Key Largo, FL, which includes the world’s only undersea research station, and at one time the Assistant Dean at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. Dr. Prager has built a national reputation as a scientist and spokesperson for the earth and ocean sciences and is a sought-after speaker for public-oriented events. She has appeared on The Today Show and NBC News, Good Morning America, CNN, Fox News, CBS Early Show, The Weather Channel, in shows for the Discovery Channel and was a consultant for the Disney movie, Moana. 

Dr. Prager has participated in research expeditions to places such as the Galapagos Islands, Papua New Guinea, Caribbean, Bahamas, and the deep waters of the Florida Reef tract. She obtained a BA from Wesleyan University, Connecticut, a MS from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, and in 1992, a PhD from Louisiana State University.

Trent Romer is an author of two sustainability books, TEDx speaker and sustainability consultant.  He began his career 30 years ago and was the 3rd generation co-owner of his family’s business Clear View Bag Co., Inc founded in 1961 by his grandfather. Trent continues working for Clear View and serves as a sustainability operating partner for the private equity firm focused on environmental, social and governance issues within portfolio companies.

Mason Miller is AmaTerra Environmental and Environmental Research Group’s Vice President of Innovation and Technology. He earned his archaeology BA from the University of Texas at Austin and his master’s in nautical archaeology from Texas A&M University (though he is an Orange-blood at heart). Mason has >23 years of experience in environmental consulting, working as a terrestrial and underwater archeologist, geophysical specialist, public outreach lead, and as a diver. Mason is an ACRA board member and chairs ACRA’s Continuing Education Committee. Mason lives in Dripping Springs, Texas with his wife, Amanda, and two sons: Davis and Elliott.

Dave Buzan is an aquatic biologist who has worked in Texas on water issues since 1978.

Aaron Petty is an aquatic ecologist that is happiest working in streams, reservoirs, and estuaries for freshwater mussel surveys, oyster reef restoration, and stream bioassessments. Aaron gained much of his professional environmental and regulatory experience through work for consulting firms in Texas, anchored by his graduate work in aquatic science. He has a B.S. in Biology from Texas Tech University, and a M.S. in Environmental Studies from the College of Charleston. As a PADI diver, Aaron has experience using both scuba and surface supplied air systems for the sampling of mussels across Texas.

She holds a Master of Urban and Environmental Planning degree from ASU and an undergraduate degree in Economics from Virginia Tech. She has been involved with the Arizona Association of Environmental Professionals (AZAEP) since 2013. As the Park and Open Space Planner at Maricopa County she was responsible for park, trails, and open space planning for one of the largest counties in the country. As a Senior Program Coordinator she also taught environmental planning at ASU. In 2023 she was appointed to the Arizona BLM Resource Advisory Council.

Dr. Jason Old is a historian of twentieth- and twenty-first century US and Latin American history. He holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of South Florida. His research centers around the cultural and economic impacts of surfing and surf tourism in the Tola Municipality of southwestern Nicaragua.

Jason’s research has three principal aims: First, to show how external conditions created an economic framework conducive to buying property and developing this part of Nicaragua. Second, to explain the inextricable link between surfing and Tola's evolution from a rural coastal periphery to an international tourism hotspot. Third, to track the proliferation of a robust surfing subculture among the rural residents along the coast and its evolution into a Nicaraguan national sport as a result of these cultural and economic changes.

In addition to his scholarly work, Jason Old is the host of "The Surfing Historian" podcast, which brings together international scholars from an eclectic range of academic fields to share their most recent research.

Lori is the Chief Information Officer and Vice President for Technology and Partnerships for NatureServe, the authoritative source for biodiversity data in North America. She oversees NatureServe’s technology team, with a portfolio that includes software product development, server administration, and user support for mission critical enterprise information management and delivery systems. Since joining NatureServe in 2000, Lori has led the successful transformation of the organization’s core biodiversity data platform Biotics 5 and its public information delivery platform NatureServe Explorer. Lori’s team supports NatureServe’s North American network of biodiversity information centers with implementation of sophisticated online tools to automate environmental review and to manage and direct treatment for invasive species in their jurisdictions. Her team was recognized with the IDG CIO 100 Award in 2016 and the Computerworld Premier 100 Technology Leaders Award in 2017.

Lori’s work experience includes 10 years serving Lockheed Martin Corporation in the field of software integration and information systems development. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Bucknell University in her home state of Pennsylvania. She lives in Arlington, Virginia and enjoys hiking, traveling, and cooking – and she makes a wicked good peach pie!
