We are returning to our roots this week with a Netflix Original movie: Players, starring Gina Rodriguez, Damon Wayans, Jr. and Tom Ellis. 

Mack and her friends have spent their entire adult lives running plays and bouncing from one one-night stand to the next. It's fun, but Mack wants a real relationship. She enlists her friends to help her play for keeps when she meets Nick, a handsome and serious journalist who appears to have his life together.

Well, friends, our Cinderella-fest has come to an end, and yes, we really are watching a movie entitled "Another Cinderella Story". This one stars Selena Gomez, Drew Seeley and Jane Lynch as the wicked not-step-mother.

We're back in the San Fernando Valley, because of course we are. Mary just wants to dance and fall in love with dreamy pop stars, but her guardian and not-step-sisters aren't keen on letting either of those things happen. With the help of her friends, maybe she'll still get to do both!

We're headed back to 2004 with A Cinderella Story, starring Hilary Duff, Chad Michael Murray and a wicked step-mother played by podcast favorite, Jennifer Coolidge. This one is technically a "teen romantic comedy," so we'll count it.  

Sam wants more out of life than being her step-family's live-in servant. She's also tired of being teased by the rich, popular kids at her San Fernando Valley high school. So she's graduating early and setting off to Princeton to start fresh. Before she can make her escape, she develops a flirtation with another Princeton hopeful at her school, a boy who uses the screenname "Nomad". He'd really like to meet her at the Homecoming dance. What could possibly go wrong?

This week, by popular demand, we watched the 1938 screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby, starring podcast favorites Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Susan is a flighty and infuriating heiress in possession of a leopard (possibly spelled with a "w". "Leopawd"?). David is a paleontologist who needs a million dollars for his museum and really wants to finish assembling his dinosaur. That sounds like a meet cute waiting to happen to us!

To close out 2023, we are watching a listener-recommended movie: Megamind, starring Will Farrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross and Brad Pitt (with just a hint of J.K. Simmons!). 

Megamind learns at a young age that he's pretty terrible at being good. Tired of trying to win the adoration of his classmates, he reinvents himself as an incredibly handsome criminal genius and master of all villainy. Sure, he always loses to his superhero rival, but that doesn't stop him! When he unexpectedly destroys his rival (using copper and the awesome power of the Sun), he's left without a purpose and the very foreign thought that maybe being a good guy isn't such a bad thing? Especially not when it means he gets to spend time with his former frequent hostage, the smart and beautiful news reporter Roxanne Ritchi.

Perpetually single but ever hopeful Natalie, a journalist from LA, decides to take a chance and expand her online dating horizons. She swipes right on what she thinks is the perfect guy: Tag, an outdoorsy hottie from Lake Placid, NY. When she decides to surprise him for Christmas, she realizes that the person she's been talking to hasn't been entirely truthful about who he is.  Uh oh.
