    About this Episode

Emily Celis joined Kelly on the podcast this week to enlighten us with her advice, her story, and her passions. Emily is a mental health advocate, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and the executive director and co-founder of S.A.G.E. Holistic Health and Wellness in Orange, California. Her passion lies in helping others find their path in life to what they feel will create the most balance. Emily shared her journey to finding this passion with us. She said she lived in Chicago and Utah before moving to Southern California where she started working in sales and marketing. Although she was good in that career, she never felt as though it was her true life calling. In her mid-20’s, she went to therapy for the first time, which opened her eyes to the world of mental health and wellness. She enrolled back in college to finish her psychology degree, get her masters and now strives to create a community space where all are welcome to find an accepting place to build relationships with others in an environment of progressive growth! Listen in as Kelly and Emily discuss the importance of mental health and their own practices for mindfulness!

This episode was so inspirational, educational, and intriguing! I hope you all enjoy the episode and leave your feedback all over my social media! Thank you, Emily, for joining me on the podcast!

BONUS: Ghost Stories with Haunted OC: Part 2

BONUS: Ghost Stories with Haunted OC: Part 2

BOO! This is part 2 of an episode we did last year at Halloween (Part 1 is Episode 24). If you haven’t heard of Haunted OC, you’re missing out on the spook! Ernie Alonzo and Charles Spratley have been doing haunted ghost tours of Orange County cities for over 10 years! They conduct their tours year-round, rain or shine (and Kelly has done a tour in both rain AND shine!) They started their tours in Old Towne Orange when Ernie began his research on the antique shops around the Plaza and the eerie stories that would happen in them. Ernie shares that the Antique Depot consistently had the best spooky stories - which sparked the beginning of the tours. Charles started his own ghost tour company in San Diego as a passion project but moved to Orange County for a life change. He started working for Disneyland and one day, when he was talking to a park guest named Joe, he told him his interest in ghost tours. Joe ended up saying, “You need to meet my cousin Ernie!” and the rest is history. Ernie and Charles met up by the fountain in the Old Towne Orange Plaza and that’s how Haunted Orange County was born! On this episode, Kelly, Ernie and Charles discuss their outside passions, the crazy story of how they were connected, and some of their most favorite spooky ghost stories! I’m serious y’all - you won’t want to miss these very fun spooky stories from right here in our own backyard.

Thank you, Ernie and Charles, for being our guests on the podcast! Happy Halloween, everyone!

The Old Towne Swing Dancer Matt Richey - What’s Juicy

The Old Towne Swing Dancer Matt Richey - What’s Juicy

Before Matt could talk, he would watch his sister in dance class and by the time he was home he would have her entire routine memorized. Before high school, he saw a dance team perform and as soon as he saw them, he knew that was what he wanted to do. So it’s fair to say Matt has been dancing his entire life. Matt moved to Orange 3 years ago with a goal to be around more swing dancers and like-minded people.

Due to quarantine, all partner dancing and many dance events have closed down. Throughout this time, Matt couldn’t find the right outlet to dance so he started going on a walk everyday to get out of the house, and his walks always turned into a dance - whether he realized it or not! He just started dancing and a car would honk at him or wave - so he decided to just film his dances and bring a smile to more people, virtually! We found Matt on Instagram, and we definitely recommend you check out his page linked below. On this episode Matt, Lindsey, and Alex talk about how Matt started his Old Towne dancing videos, how he taught a dance at Disneyland’s Dapper Day, how the quarantine actually inspired this silver lining in Matt’s life.

DM Matt on Instagram to request a song Matt should dance to!

Our Inspirational Baking Wiz Heather McLeod - Peeling Back the Layers

Our Inspirational Baking Wiz Heather McLeod - Peeling Back the Layers

Heather McLeod has always been a pug-lover. She had a pug growing up and when she became an adult, before she knew it she had three pugs. One day, she had a friend visit her and spend the night. In the morning, she made her friend breakfast with a note, “Welcome to the Three Pug Inn,” and the name stuck! This led Heather to become the professional baker, entrepreneur, and kitchen wiz she is today! She is the owner of Three Pug Bakery, a full service bakery and catering company. She has hosted events at the Dizzy Daisy and caters her delicious treats all over Orange County.

Through her time in the hospitality industry, Heather learned many lessons about empathy, and shared her perspective with us. Due to COVID-19, she has been able to shift her focus from her day job and focus so much of her attention on Three Pug Bakery.

“We love being inspired by you. Unleash our imagination and let us create custom items and menus tailor made for you.  Specializing in healthy comfort, vegan and all around tail waggin’ cuisine,” Heather shares on the website. During COVID-19, you can place orders for delivery online at the link below!

A Must-Listen 1966 High School Tale by Peggy Calvert - Historanigcal

A Must-Listen 1966 High School Tale by Peggy Calvert - Historanigcal

Surprise! Peggy Calvert is a returning guest to the podcast because she has a story so sentimental and sweet, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share it with you. Let’s jump back to 1966, and Peggy is a sophomore at Villa Park High School. The following year was the first year that El Modena High School would start, where Peggy would be transferring. She was asked if she would like to contribute to the creation of the school, and of course she said yes. Her committee was in charge of organizing a way to choose the mascot and the school colors.

In September of 1966, it was time to go to the new school. On the first day, Peggy noticed there was no grass or lockers, and in that time, backpacks were thought of only for camping and not for carrying books. “I don’t why we never thought of that,” said Peggy. In her time at El Modena, Peggy was a cheerleader on the first-ever cheer squad, member of Project Stem (getting shrubs and trees for El Modena), and was a member of the first graduating class of El Modena High School. Clearly, the running theme in Peggy’s life is spirit, storytelling, happiness, and joy.

“If it’s not fun, I don’t wanna do it,” said Peggy.

Worship music in OTO with Alex and Christian - Peeling Back the Layers

Worship music in OTO with Alex and Christian - Peeling Back the Layers

Our host this week, Lindsay, met our two musical guests in college at Concordia University. Alex is the Associate Director of Music at St. John's Church and his job is to run the music and organize the worship services. After college, he started subbing handbells for the church group and worked his way up to his position now. Christian is the Director of Ministries at Immanuel Church where he hires musicians to play and directs the choir. He decided to apply for the position while he was in the middle of getting his masters degree, and it ended up being a perfect fit.

During quarantine, Christian has been working with Immanuel to host shortened, pre-recorded services that are available online, with music throughout of course. St. Johns has adapted to the new norm by also going virtual on their website, and are now experimenting with an outdoor service! Visit the links below to join the worship. On this episode, Alex, Christian, and Lindsay discuss the history of musical handbells, how the brothers discovered their passion for music, and how you can support them and hear music at St. Johns and Immanuel in the future! Thanks so much for being on the show, Alex and Christian. And thank YOU for listening!
