Ep. 329 - Okay, Let’s Lower The Voting Age To Zero

    enSeptember 11, 2019

    Podcast Summary

    • Reflections on 9/11 fading into history for younger generations9/11 marked a defining moment in history for those who lived it, but is starting to fade into historical fact for younger generations, shaping their collective consciousness.

The events of September 11, 2001, mark a clear before and after point in history for those who lived through it, but for younger generations, it will be an historical fact rather than a lived experience. The speaker, now 33 and a parent, reflects on how 9/11 is starting to fade into history for their children, just as the JFK assassination did for them. They recall their own experience of watching the events unfold in health class and the subsequent days of confusion and shock. For the speaker and their generation, 9/11 was a defining moment of their childhood, alongside other notable events like the OJ Simpson trial. These events have left an indelible mark on history and continue to shape our collective consciousness.

    • Childhood News Events Left Millennials Without a Sense of National UnityMillennials have experienced only negative news events during their formative years, leaving them without a sense of national unity and celebration.

The speaker believes that the defining news events of their childhood, which include scandals and tragedies, have left millennials without a sense of national unity and celebration. They argue that previous generations had both good and bad news events, but millennials only have the latter. Regarding recent news, the speaker expresses indifference towards John Bolton's departure from the Trump administration, but questions why Trump hired him in the first place, given Bolton's well-known hawkish views. The speaker criticizes those who refuse to criticize the president and encourages asking why such individuals were hired in the first place.

    • Trump's Leadership: A Pattern of Poor Hiring Decisions and Public FeudsDespite Trump's claims, his hiring record shows a trend of bringing in incompetent individuals or those not aligned with his vision, leading to public feuds and concerns about his competence as a leader. Additionally, issues of voter suppression persist, with an estimated 75 million Americans unable to register to vote due to state and local laws.

The repeated pattern of poor hiring decisions and public feuds under President Trump's leadership raises concerns about his competence and effective leadership. Despite his claims, Trump's hiring record shows a trend of bringing in incompetent individuals or those who don't align with his vision, leading to bitter public feuds upon termination. This pattern is not a positive sign for competent leadership and is a recurring issue. Additionally, there is a proposal from Vox to lower the voting age to 0, which raises questions about the eligibility and readiness of infants to make informed decisions in the democratic process. The issue of voter suppression also persists, with an estimated 75 million American citizens being barred from registering to vote due to state and local laws.

    • Questioning the Voting AgeThe voting age limits democratic participation, challenges the assumption of rational voters, and could lead to increased civic engagement. Some argue for lowering or eliminating it, while others believe young people aren't ready.

The concept of a voting age is questionable and limiting, especially when considering the potential benefits of allowing younger citizens to participate in democratic processes. The author presents four reasons for this perspective: first, the voting age is an awkward exception to the principle of fair and free elections for all; second, the assumption that voters must be rational and informed agents is debatable; third, allowing young people to vote could lead to increased civic engagement throughout their lives; and fourth, children have a significant stake in political issues. While some argue that young people are not yet ready to vote, others propose lowering or even eliminating the voting age. This debate raises important questions about the role of age in democratic participation and the potential impact of including or excluding certain groups from the political process.

    • The debate over lowering the voting ageThe potential implications of lowering the voting age for the political landscape are complex, with arguments for and against informed decision-making and potential biases based on demographics.

The debate over lowering the voting age raises important questions about the role of informed and rational decision-making in our democracy. While some argue that children may not be capable of making informed decisions at the polls, others suggest that their votes would essentially be a reflection of their parents' political beliefs. This perspective could potentially lead to an increase in votes for conservative religious groups due to their higher birth rates. Ultimately, the idea of lowering the voting age is a complex issue with potential implications for the political landscape. The best-case scenario would be a population of informed and rational voters, but the reality may be different. Regardless, the conversation highlights the importance of considering the potential consequences of democratic decisions.

    • Having Children: A Moral and Strategic DecisionApproach every situation with caution, avoid jumping to conclusions, and respect the complexities of each unique case.

The decision to have children is not only a moral consideration but also a politically strategic one. The discussion also touched upon the recent lawsuit against Antonio Brown for alleged sexual assault. While Brown's past behavior raises concerns, the timing of the lawsuit and inconsistencies in the woman's story make it important to approach the situation with caution. The speaker emphasized that every case is unique, and it's essential to avoid jumping to conclusions and respect the complexities of each situation. In this case, the woman's behavior after the alleged assaults is questionable, and further investigation is needed to determine the truth.

    • Exploring Alternative ExplanationsApproach situations with a questioning mindset and consider all possible angles before jumping to conclusions.

It's crucial to approach situations with a questioning mindset and consider all possible angles before jumping to conclusions. The discussion revolved around the plausibility of a woman's claim of being assaulted by a man and then continuing to visit his house. While it's important not to victim blame, it's also essential to consider alternative explanations. The speaker questioned the possibility of the woman fabricating the story due to the man's wealth and current negative publicity. In another context, the speaker criticized the concept of raising a genderless chick at a London Aquarium, arguing that we should respect an animal's right to self-identify and not assume their gender based on species. The speaker's passion for questioning closed-minded thinking and respecting individual rights shone through both discussions.

    • Exploring the coexistence of science and faithScience and faith can coexist, and it's encouraged to explore how they support each other, not dismiss scientific discoveries.

Science and faith are not mutually exclusive. The individual expressing their concerns has been urged by some to disregard scientific discoveries, such as evolution, in favor of blind faith. However, this advice is not recommended as science is the study of how the physical world works and cannot be disregarded. Instead, it's encouraged to explore how science and faith can coexist and even support each other. There's no need for the two concepts to contradict or be at odds. A good starting point for further exploration would be to read books written by respected scientists who are also believers, such as Francis Collins' "The Language of God." It's important to remember that thoughtful individuals should be sought out for discussions on these topics, rather than those who dismiss scientific discoveries.

    • Be wary of individuals or materials that mix science and religion inaccuratelyAvoid charlatans who distort science for religious reasons, and promote genuine equality in games and life

It's important to be cautious when encountering individuals or materials that claim to harmonize science and religion but actually deny established scientific facts based on their personal interpretations of scripture. These individuals can be considered charlatans and hacks. On a different note, a recent news article discusses Hasbro's new version of Monopoly, where women start with more money than men. Some criticized this as demeaning, but others saw it as a challenge to win despite the disadvantage. However, the original Monopoly game embodies the concept of equality, where everyone plays by the same rules. It's essential to promote genuine equality rather than providing advantages based on gender.

    • Feminist desire for power revealed in Monopoly gameFeminists' competitive nature in Monopoly game highlights their fundamental desire for power and superiority, driving their political agenda.

According to Matt Walsh, the desire for power and superiority is a fundamental aspect of the feminist movement, as evidenced by their competitive nature in a game of Monopoly. Walsh suggests that this desire extends beyond the game and is a significant factor in their political agenda. Ep. 1396 - A System Run By Illiterate Imbeciles

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, a judge in Atlanta was just arrested and removed from the bench after getting into a fight at a nightclub and assaulting a police officer. Again: this woman works as a judge, not a waitress at Waffle House. But, she is just a symptom of a much larger problem. We'll discuss. Also, I'll offer my preview of tonight's presidential debate. Climate protesters attempt a very unique and hilarious method of stopping traffic. And, a guy on Twitter is roundly mocked and ridiculed after offering some unorthodox life advice to young men. As usual, the peanut gallery is wrong.

Ep. 1395 - A Flock Of Drag Queens Descend On Capitol Hill

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, yesterday was "Drag Lobby Day" on Capitol Hill as several drag queens descended on our nation's capital to lobby for a host of awful legislation. The whole event was a flop, though, which may tell us something. Also, the Biden Administration promotes another cross-dressing man. The city of Los Angeles cracks down on people who are committing the crime of trying to make their communities safe and livable. And, the first annual "FatCon," a convention for fat people, just happened. I'll have the highlights, in case you were under the weight limit and couldn't attend.

Ep. 1394 - The Fight Against Child Mutilation Makes It To The Supreme Court

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, the Supreme Court will officially hear a challenge to Tennessee's ban on "gender affirming care" for minors. This will be a huge case that could deliver a devastating blow to the trans agenda. Also, CNN kicks a Trump spokesperson off the air for questioning CNN's objectivity ahead of the presidential debate on Thursday. Taylor Swift makes a brave stand against the patriarchy at her most recent concert. And, British academics are researching milk to discover its ties to racism and colonialism.

Ep. 1393 - Christian Conservatives Proven Right Once Again As Abstinence 'Trend' Gains Popularity

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, the media has discovered a hot new trend. It's called abstinence. For years the Left mocked Christian conservatives for promoting abstinence. Now, they're coming around, but for all the wrong reasons. Also, Jamaal Bowman and AOC team up for the cringiest campaign rally of all time. Donald Trump made two campaign promises over the weekend: one very good and one very bad. And, the wife of an NFL quarterback says that she convinced her now-husband to date her by hooking up with his backup. Why would any wife share a story like that?

    Ep. 1392 - Disney’s Not So Secret Anti-White Agenda

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, we've heard about Disney's not-so-secret gay agenda. Now, thanks to James O'Keefe, we know more about their not-so-secret anti-white agenda. Also, MSNBC talking heads do their best to explain why classrooms should have pride flags but shouldn't have the Ten Commandments. Their argument is more revealing than they wanted it to be. And, can racism cause cancer? That was the premise of an episode of an NBC medical drama. It was not satire. Not intentionally, anyway.

Ep. 1391 - Anti-Human Eco Brats Deface One Of The Oldest Monuments On Earth

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, the anti-human climate alarmist brats are at it again. This time, they defaced one of the oldest and most historically significant monuments on the planet. These people don't love the planet. They just hate humanity. Also, Louisiana is mandating a copy of the Ten Commandments for every classroom in the state. The usual suspects are claiming that this is an attack on the First Amendment. I'll explain why that's ridiculous. And, the "bio-hacking" movement continues to grow. These are people who think that dying is a choice, rather than an inevitable fact of human existence.

#200: The Virgin Vote - Masculinity & Politics in the 19th Century

We're in the middle of a presidential campaign here in the U.S., and once again commentators, politicians, and reporters are bemoaning the apathy and disengagement of young Americans, but there was a time in American history when young people were the most passionate participants in American democracy. No, it wasn't the 1960s. It was the 1860s.
My guest today on the podcast has just published a book about nineteenth century politics, and the energy that young voters brought to the process, and how young people, particularly men in the nineteenth century, looked to politics for a sense of manhood and adult identity during a time of economic and social upheaval.
His name is Jon Grinspan, and his book is The Virgin Vote: How Young Americans Made Democracy Social, Politics Personal, and Voting Popular in the Nineteenth Century. On today's episode Jon and I discuss why politics was an essential part of male identity in the nineteenth century, and how a man's first vote was an important rite of passage into manhood during this time. We also get into the atmosphere of campaigns in the nineteenth century America. If you think this current election cycle is unprecedented in its violence, nastiness, and general circus-like environment, wait until you hear about the booze laden, torch lit, midnight campaign barbecues, and the shankings and brawls that happened at the polls during the nineteenth Century, some pretty crazy stuff.
After the show make sure you check out the show notes at AOM.IS/VirginVote, where you'll find links to resources, things we mentioned, so you can delve deeper into this topic.
