Ep. 333 Border Security: Making Sense of the Noise

Ep. 333 Border Security: Making Sense of the Noise

With all the news about immigration and border issues at the national and state level, it’s getting hard to keep track of the issue beyond the rhetoric. So, we invited Kristin Etter to the program to help sort things out. Kristin is the Director of Policy and Legal Services at the Texas Immigration Law Council. Previously, she served as the Special Project Director of Operation Lone Star at Texas RioGrande Legal Aid where she developed and implemented the litigation response to Operation Lone Star. Kristin will help us understand where we are with Operation Lone Star and SB 4 passed in the 4th special session, and where the court battle over SB4 implementation stands.

The Texas Immigration Law Council is co-hosting a webinar with Texas Impact February 27 at 5:00pm. To register for the webinar, and find out more about the Texas Immigration Law Council, follow the links below.

Ep. 332 "Your Voice is Crucial": Rep. Donna Howard Addresses the Texas United Women in Faith
This week we are bringing even more content from the United Women in Faith Legislative Event while continuing the discussion about reproductive health.

The United Women in Faith welcomed State Representative Donna Howard to talk with them at the Capitol last week. Rep. Howard is a woman of faith herself, and also has a special role as the Chairwoman of the Texas Women’s Health Caucus. We thought it would be an opportune moment to bring Rep. Howard’s comments to you this week as you consider the issues shaping the political discourse and how you can get involved.

Ep. 331 It's Not Just About You: How Faith Calls Us to Advocacy
This week we kicked off Texas Impact’s event season with an incredible three days with about 250 United Women in Faith at their annual legislative event, and today we are going to bring you a little sample from that event. We start with Bishop Ruben Saenz, United Methodist Bishop for the North and Central Texas Conferences of the UMC bringing greetings to the United Women in Faith. Following Bishop Saenz is my conversation with another native Texan, Sally Vonner, CEO and General Secretary of the United Women in Faith. Sally came down from New York for the event, and we recorded from the Capitol while the UWF's were finishing their legislative visits.

    Ep.327 Fourth Special Session Wrap-up

    Ep.327 Fourth Special Session Wrap-up
This week we welcome back to the program Texas Impact's Advocacy Director, Joshua Houston, to wrap up what is hopefully the last special session of the 88th Texas Legislature for 2023. One of the main issues the legislature has tried to address is public school funding. In a year with an historic budget surplus, the Texas Legislature should have been able to better fund our underfunded public schools and give Texas public school teachers a well-deserved raise–both issues Texans of faith consistently tell us they care about. However, both have been tied up all year because they have been "held hostage" to state leaders insisting that those priorities would only be funded in exchange for diverting dollars from public schools to private school vouchers. The last moments of the fourth special session left many questions unanswered. Josh helps us understand what happened and what comes next.

The work to stop vouchers in Texas is not over yet! Consider joining our Public School Defenders team, signing the letter to your legislator telling them to keep public dollars in public schools, and becoming a member of Texas Impact.
