    Podcast Summary

    • AI's impact on the job market and media industryRunway raises funds for AI video/image creation, Microsoft offers generative AI certificates, EU drafts AI legislation, Everyday AI offers a free daily AI newsletter

AI is making significant strides in various industries, particularly in the job market, and both recruiters and job seekers can benefit from its advancements. Runway, a generative AI company focusing on video and image creation, recently raised $141 million, showcasing the growing importance of AI in media. Microsoft is also jumping on the bandwagon by offering a professional certificate for generative AI skills via LinkedIn. However, the EU is drafting strict legislation on the use of generative AI, which could impact how the technology is adopted and governed in Europe and potentially other countries. For those interested in staying informed about AI developments and their implications, Everyday AI provides a free daily newsletter to simplify the complex world of AI and keep readers updated.

    • Stay the course and expand your networkAttend interview prep webinars, utilize networking, and leverage AI tools for job search success.

While the current job market may seem uncertain with layoffs and industry shifts, it's important for job seekers to stay the course and expand their network. Kyle Stock, a recruiter at Ozinga, advises attending interview prep webinars and utilizing the power of networking. Additionally, he mentioned the use of AI as an amazing tool to help job seekers, including generative AI that can assist in various aspects of the job search process. Despite the current challenges, Kyle emphasizes that opportunities will come to those who stay persistent and focused on their professional growth.

    • Utilizing AI tools for recruitmentRecruiters can save time and focus on strategic tasks by using AI tools for personalized messaging, job description generation, and social media engagement.

Recruiters can significantly enhance their performance by utilizing generative AI tools, such as text-to-image or chatbot models like Google Bard and ChatGPT. These tools can be employed to create personalized, human-like messages for cold emailing passive candidates, write LinkedIn posts, and generate text campaigns. By automating these monotonous tasks, recruiters can save time and focus on more strategic, forward-thinking activities. One specific example of AI's impact is in creating large, complex job descriptions. Without AI, these descriptions would require significant time and resources from HR and legal teams. With AI, however, these descriptions can be generated quickly and efficiently, allowing recruiters to streamline their workflow and focus on candidate engagement and selection. Overall, incorporating generative AI into recruitment processes can lead to increased productivity, improved candidate experience, and a more strategic approach to talent acquisition.

    • Using AI to enhance job descriptions and cold emailsAI can generate more creative, concise, and relatable job descriptions and cold emails when used collaboratively with human input. It saves time and resources while maintaining a personalized and engaging approach.

Using AI for creating job descriptions or cold emails is not about replacing human creativity with robotic processes, but rather enhancing it. Kyle from Ozinga shared his experience of using AI as a tool to generate more creative, concise, and relatable job descriptions. He emphasized that it's not a one-click solution, but a collaborative process where the user needs to provide input and work with the AI to refine the output. This approach results in more personalized and engaging job descriptions, making the recruitment process more effective. Similarly, AI can also be used to generate more personalized and effective cold emails by analyzing the recipient's data and crafting messages tailored to their interests and needs. Overall, AI is a powerful tool that, when used wisely, can help businesses save time and resources while maintaining a human touch in their communication.

    • Mistaken for Human: AI's Surprising Ability in HRAI can mimic human communication but human touch is crucial in recruitment for assessing candidate's character and fit for the company.

AI is becoming increasingly sophisticated and can mimic human communication, even without explicit coaching. This was demonstrated during an HR department meeting where a cold email written by Bard was mistaken for being written by a human. However, small businesses are using AI in more practical ways, such as identifying job seekers through text campaigns and automating monotonous tasks like setting up interviews. But when it comes to the human connection and assessing a candidate's character and fit for the company, the human touch is still crucial and AI should not be relied upon. It's important to remember that candidates are real people, not just pieces of paper, and the human element is essential in the recruitment process.

    • The Role of Human Decision-making in AI ApplicationsAI can assist in job applications, but human judgment and culture remain crucial in the hiring process, with ethical considerations and legal restrictions to be aware of.

While AI can be a powerful tool in many aspects of life and business, including job applications, there are certain areas where human decision-making remains essential. Lindy, an educational consultant, shared her experience of improving her use of ChatGPT by taking a priming, prompting, and polishing (PPP) course. The unique culture at Ozinga, where human decision-making in hiring is valued, was also highlighted. Regarding Peter's question about the future of AI in job applications, it was agreed that people will increasingly use AI to streamline the process, but there are ethical considerations and legal restrictions to be aware of. For instance, New York is banning companies from using AI to screen resumes. Overall, while AI can be a valuable aid, human judgment and culture continue to play crucial roles.

    • AI in Job Search: Get Noticed by RecruitersJob seekers can use AI for programmatic advertising, tailored resumes, cover letters, and personalized cold emails to increase their chances of getting noticed by recruiters.

Job seekers can use AI to increase their chances of getting noticed by recruiters through programmatic advertising. Recruiters use AI to place job ads on various websites, targeting potential candidates. Job seekers should not ignore these ads but instead click on them and explore the opportunities. Additionally, using AI for crafting tailored resumes and cover letters can also help job seekers stand out. Another effective way to use AI is in crafting personalized cold emails to recruiters. While AI can't replace the human touch entirely, it can make the job search process more efficient and effective. Remember, recruiters are trying to recruit you, so don't overlook their attempts to reach out.

    • Using AI in Hiring: A Win-Win SituationRecruiters can use AI to find candidates faster and job seekers can use it to enhance their applications. Both should remember the importance of human connection in the process.

Both recruiters and job seekers should embrace the use of AI in the hiring process without shying away from it. AI is a significant production that is here to stay, as big as the Internet was when it first emerged. For recruiters, AI can help find the right candidates faster and more efficiently. For job seekers, AI can assist in writing emails, scripts for phone calls, or even improving their initial applications. However, it's essential to remember that human connection and humanness are still crucial in the hiring process. Job seekers should use AI to enhance their human interactions with recruiters, not replace them. Recruiters should use AI to streamline their processes while still maintaining the importance of human connection. Learning how to use AI effectively is crucial, and resources like LinkedIn Learning and experts like Jordan are available to help. Overall, the use of AI in the hiring process is a win-win situation for everyone involved, as long as the human element is not lost.

    • AI in Job Application ProcessAI can help streamline resume screening but human connection is still crucial in hiring process

While AI can be a valuable tool in the job application process, it cannot replace the human element. Recruiters still value candidates with strong character and a genuine passion for their work. AI can be used to create resumes or even generate them from scratch, but it cannot replicate the emotions and motivations that come with being a good fit for a role. Therefore, job seekers should not solely rely on AI and should continue to focus on developing their skills and showcasing their unique qualities. Additionally, recruiters should use AI as a tool to streamline the initial screening process, but still prioritize meeting candidates in person or through video calls to assess their fit beyond their resume. Overall, the conversation emphasized the importance of using AI thoughtfully and intentionally in the hiring process while not forgetting the value of human connection.

    Transcript

Holger Hoos is the Alexander von Humboldt Professor of AI at RWTH Aachen University (Germany), Professor of Machine Learning at Universiteit Leiden (the Netherlands), and Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia (Canada), where he also holds an appointment as Faculty Associate at the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), and the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI). He is board chairman of the Confederation of Laboratories of Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe (CLAIRE), vice-president of EurAI, past president of the Canadian Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAIAC), member of the Advisory Board, and former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR). Prof. Hoos leads the VISION coordination mandate for the four European networks of centers of excellence in AI established in 2020.

Holger’s research focuses on Human-Centered AI, AI for Good, and AI for All. His goal is to improve the efficiency of AI methods by automatically increasing performance and reducing resource needs; and to broaden access to and use of cutting-edge AI methods. Overall, Holger and his group develop and study AI methods that augment rather than replace human intelligence, and that help human experts to overcome their biases and limitations. Known for his work on machine learning and optimization methods for the automated design of high-performance algorithms and on stochastic local search, Holger has developed – and vigorously pursues – the paradigm of programming by optimization (PbO). He is also one of the originators of automated machine learning (AutoML). Holger works at the boundaries between computer science and other disciplines. Much of his work is inspired by and has broad impact on real-world applications.

In 2018, Holger co-founded CLAIRE, an initiative to advance European AI research and innovation. Incorporated as an international nonprofit in 2019, CLAIRE promotes excellence across all of AI, for all of Europe, with a human-centered focus. In 2021, CLAIRE received, jointly with the European Laboratory for Intelligent Systems (ELLIS), the €100 000 German AI Innovation Prize (Deutscher KI-Innovations-Preis) in recognition of outstanding contributions to development and research in AI. This prize is the largest of its kind in Europe.

In November 2021, Holger was selected for the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship in AI, Germany’s most highly endowed research award, which honors its recipients for their outstanding research record and aims to facilitate long-term and groundbreaking research contributions. Supported by this award and substantial additional resources made available by the university, he started building a new research group at Rhine-Westphalia Technical University of Aachen (RWTH Aachen, Germany) dedicated to the advance of Human-Centered AI, AI for Good, and AI for All, in January 2022. He also serves on the board of directors of the RWTH AI Center.

Lawsuits and Probes, How OpenAI & Microsoft Are Impacting the Trajectory of AI

On this episode of The AI Moment, we discuss an emerging Gen AI trend: Lawsuits and Probes, How OpenAI & Microsoft Are Impacting the Trajectory of AI

    The discussion covers:

OpenAI and Microsoft seem to be at the center of discussions about AI monopolies and copyright fights. Last week the EU said they are considering opening an investigation into whether OpenAI and Microsoft’s partnership agreement is a potential monopoly. Separately, The New York Times sued the pair claiming copyright infringement when ChatGPT was trained on NYT content. I’ll discuss why I think the EU investigation will go nowhere and conversely, why the NYT suit is critical to better LLM outcomes.
