Ep. 52 - There Isn’t Any Nice Or Pleasant Way To Enforce Our Immigration Law

    enJune 22, 2018

    Podcast Summary

    • Overcoming challenges in developing a new hobbyPersevere through initial struggles to reap the rewards of mastering a new hobby, while respecting the law and legal process for immigration policies.

Developing a new hobby can be challenging, especially in the early stages when you're still learning and may not be very good at it. The speaker shares his personal experience of developing an interest in fishing but struggling with his lack of skill. He emphasizes the importance of pushing through the initial phase and enjoying the process despite the difficulties, as the payoff of becoming proficient and enjoying the hobby to its fullest eventually comes. The speaker also touches upon the topic of immigration policies, expressing his belief that enforcing laws and protecting borders requires a legal process, including detention, to ensure that those who break the law are held accountable and do not disappear.

    • Detaining families during immigration processingDetaining families during immigration processing is necessary but presents challenges in terms of resources, bureaucracy, and legal considerations. Finding ways to streamline the process and keep families together is desirable but may not always be feasible.

Enforcing immigration laws and processing asylum claims involves detaining and confining individuals, including families, for a period of time due to the complex and lengthy investigation and processing procedures. This is a necessary step to ensure orderly processing and adherence to the law, but it presents challenges in terms of resources, bureaucratic complications, and legal considerations. The speaker is in favor of finding ways to streamline the process and keep families together while they go through it, but acknowledges that this may not always be feasible due to limitations in resources and capabilities.

    • Balancing Law Enforcement and Compassion at the BorderThe debate over separating families at the border involves balancing the need to enforce laws with compassion and humanity, acknowledging the potential trauma and difficulties for children, and recognizing the complexities and moral dilemmas involved.

There is a complex debate surrounding the issue of separating families at the border. The speaker expresses their dislike for the idea of separating children from their parents due to the potential trauma and difficulties of reuniting families within the bureaucratic system. However, they also acknowledge that enforcing the law without separating families is not a viable solution, as it could lead to an influx of people bringing children across the border as "get-out-of-jail-free" cards. The speaker emphasizes the importance of enforcing laws to deter illegal border crossings, but acknowledges the challenges and potential negative consequences, particularly for children. Ultimately, the discussion highlights the complexities and moral dilemmas involved in maintaining and protecting a civilization, and the need to balance the enforcement of laws with compassion and humanity.

    • Defining and protecting borders are essential for civilizationCivilizations have been built through conflict and the establishment and defense of boundaries

The establishment and maintenance of civilizations and countries involve defining and protecting borders, which can be an unpleasant and sometimes violent process. Contrary to the utopian idea of open borders and no laws, the reality is that founding and expanding a civilization requires drawing boundaries and often involves conflict. The history of the United States, for example, is marked by numerous wars and battles fought to establish and defend its borders. This is not to justify every action taken in the name of border protection, but rather to acknowledge the historical reality that civilizations have not been built through polite and nice negotiations alone. Instead, they have required the willingness to fight and defend the boundaries that define them.

    • Recognizing the necessity of enforcing lawsUnderstanding that enforcing laws, even if unpleasant, is necessary for maintaining order and justice in society, without dehumanizing individuals.

While striving for humanity and justice, it's important to recognize that enforcing laws, even if unpleasant, is necessary and fair. The speaker acknowledges that the idea of enforcing laws and imprisoning people is not a pleasant thought, but it's a necessary aspect of maintaining order and justice in society. It's essential to understand that this doesn't mean we don't care or sympathize with those breaking the law, especially when considering the complexities of their situations. The speaker emphasizes that enforcing the law is not personal and doesn't dehumanize individuals. Instead, it's about upholding the importance of the law for the greater good.

    • Maintaining order and civilization requires enforcing border laws, even with hardshipsFinding a more just and humane way to enforce necessary border laws is essential for maintaining order and civilization.

Enforcing border laws is a necessary but unpleasant process for maintaining order and civilization, even if it results in separation of families or other hardships. It's important to remember that laws should be fair, clear, and humane, but not always comfortable or pleasant. Some people advocating against border enforcement may actually be pushing for open borders, rather than seeking a more effective and compassionate way to enforce existing laws. A productive discussion would focus on finding a more just and humane way to enforce necessary border laws, rather than debating whether there should be any laws at all.

    • Consistent stance needed for productive immigration conversationEnforcing the law humanely is crucial for productive immigration conversation, but it's necessary to enforce the law first.

Having a productive conversation on complex issues like immigration requires a clear and consistent stance. During a discussion about humane prison policies, some participants advocated for no prisons at all, which was deemed disingenuous and incoherent. Applying this concept to immigration, open borders is an incoherent position as it would lead to the dissolution of a country and the very things that make it appealing to immigrants. While keeping families together is desirable, enforcing the law and protecting the border is essential. The speaker emphasized the importance of enforcing the law humanely but emphasized that enforcement is the first step. Despite any discomfort, it's necessary for the well-being of children, the country, and everyone involved, except for smugglers.

Ep. 1396 - A System Run By Illiterate Imbeciles

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, a judge in Atlanta was just arrested and removed from the bench after getting into a fight at a nightclub and assaulting a police officer. Again: this woman works as a judge, not a waitress at Waffle House. But, she is just a symptom of a much larger problem. We'll discuss. Also, I'll offer my preview of tonight's presidential debate. Climate protesters attempt a very unique and hilarious method of stopping traffic. And, a guy on Twitter is roundly mocked and ridiculed after offering some unorthodox life advice to young men. As usual, the peanut gallery is wrong.

Ep. 1395 - A Flock Of Drag Queens Descend On Capitol Hill

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, yesterday was "Drag Lobby Day" on Capitol Hill as several drag queens descended on our nation's capital to lobby for a host of awful legislation. The whole event was a flop, though, which may tell us something. Also, the Biden Administration promotes another cross-dressing man. The city of Los Angeles cracks down on people who are committing the crime of trying to make their communities safe and livable. And, the first annual "FatCon," a convention for fat people, just happened. I'll have the highlights, in case you were under the weight limit and couldn't attend.

Ep. 1394 - The Fight Against Child Mutilation Makes It To The Supreme Court

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, the Supreme Court will officially hear a challenge to Tennessee's ban on "gender affirming care" for minors. This will be a huge case that could deliver a devastating blow to the trans agenda. Also, CNN kicks a Trump spokesperson off the air for questioning CNN's objectivity ahead of the presidential debate on Thursday. Taylor Swift makes a brave stand against the patriarchy at her most recent concert. And, British academics are researching milk to discover its ties to racism and colonialism.

Ep. 1393 - Christian Conservatives Proven Right Once Again As Abstinence 'Trend' Gains Popularity

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, the media has discovered a hot new trend. It's called abstinence. For years the Left mocked Christian conservatives for promoting abstinence. Now, they're coming around, but for all the wrong reasons. Also, Jamaal Bowman and AOC team up for the cringiest campaign rally of all time. Donald Trump made two campaign promises over the weekend: one very good and one very bad. And, the wife of an NFL quarterback says that she convinced her now-husband to date her by hooking up with his backup. Why would any wife share a story like that?

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, we've heard about Disney's not-so-secret gay agenda. Now, thanks to James O'Keefe, we know more about their not-so-secret anti-white agenda. Also, MSNBC talking heads do their best to explain why classrooms should have pride flags but shouldn't have the Ten Commandments. Their argument is more revealing than they wanted it to be. And, can racism cause cancer? That was the premise of an episode of an NBC medical drama. It was not satire. Not intentionally, anyway.

Working Without Shame in International Educational Development? From Consequentialism to Casuistry.
The paper sets out to consider the opinion which, at its bluntest, suggests that one should not work (in educational development) in a country which does not respect the principles of a liberal democracy, which has a poor reputation in terms of human rights and or has an autocratic government. The paper argues that such an opinion must rest on some sort of consequentialist balance sheet of the actual and anticipated consequences of committing to such work or declining to do so – and this takes it into some of the problems of applying such an equation. The paper also invites caution in the assessments that westerners make of countries portrayed as a ‘undemocratic’ and the importance of taking into account, for example, history, trajectory and context.

Exiting Russia: the effects of multinational withdrawal

Exiting Russia: the effects of multinational withdrawal
Can corporate action contribute to human rights, peace, and conflict prevention? Russia’s invasion of Ukraine triggered not only massive economic and financial sanctions imposed on Russia, but also a significant but incomplete exit of multinational corporations from Russia. This exit has been driven by varying degrees of ethical as well as reputational considerations but has stalled as companies cite operational and legal dilemmas. Nonetheless important precedents have been set that may make companies—and their investors—more conscious and responsible actors in conflict situations. Companies and investors alike may integrate longstanding political risk analysis with emerging human rights due diligence to inform decisions whether to remain in certain countries. They may also consider human rights and humanitarian factors both to ensure a responsible exit and to determine possible post-conflict re-entry in ways that can contribute to peace and prevent further conflict. Such commitments and actions can encourage a new geopolitical corporate responsibility to support the rules-based order that defines the international community and underpins the global economy—and in turn enables the cooperation critical to alleviating inequality and diminishing the climate crisis. An innovative leader and standard-setter for responsible business and investment, Bennett Freeman has co-founded multi-stakeholder initiatives and coalitions focused on the extractives, technology and apparel sectors. Bennett holds degrees in History from the University of California at Berkeley (1979) and Oxford (1981; English-Speaking Union Scholar, Balliol). He served as a Clinton presidential appointee in three positions at the US Department of State, including as deputy assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labour from 1999-2001. He was senior VP for sustainability research and policy at Calvert Investments, 2006-15. As principal of Bennett Freeman Associates LLC, he currently advises multinational corporations, international institutions and NGOs on policy and strategy related to human rights and labour rights. He was the lead author of Shared Space Under Pressure: Business Support for Civic Freedoms and Human Rights Defenders (2018) and is an Associate Fellow of the International Law Programme at Chatham House. Bennett is a co-founder and Steering Committee member of Business for Ukraine (B4Ukraine), a coalition that seeks to complete the exit of foreign companies from Russia and to set higher standards for human rights due on the part of companies and investors in conflict situations—and in turn to contribute to a new ethic of geopolitical corporate responsibility to support the international rules-based order.
