    About this Episode

This week’s Clash mix sees innovative London producer Om Unit – Jim Coles – in fine form, laying down the best selection of electro we can remember hearing for a long time. Although only recently taking on the Om Unit moniker, Coles has been working as a producer and DJ for some time, previously focusing his efforts on UK hip hop collaborations and competitive live DJing. His style as Om Unit is pleasingly hard to define, but is perhaps best summed-up by the sharp, frenzied attack of the title track from his recent EP, ‘The Timps’, which – aptly enough – is included here. His Clash mix wastes no time in getting stuck in to some weighty cuts, with a fine quad-run of classic and new tracks from d’n’b luminary Marcus Intalex, Richie Hawtin’s minimal groove-tech alias Plastikman, Instra:mental’s Alex Green as Boddika, and Juan Atkins’ Model 500. Further highlights come from Addison Groove (formerly known as dub-techno act Headhunter), and French producer and Miss Kittin fave, The Hacker. Quality at every turn from the very impressive Om Unit, with a subtly but solidly awesome electro exploration. Yet another reason to seek out his talents. Om Unit’s ‘The Timps’ EP is out now, on Civil Music. Om Unit DJ Mix Tracklisting 1. Drexciya - Wave Jumper (Underground Resistance) 2. Aux 88 - Annihilating The Rhythm (Puzzlebox) 3. Episode 118 - Gang Colours
Fresh-faced Southampton talent Gang Colours, aka Will Ozanne, provides a trippy journey through ambient urban vibes as the latest addition to the Clash DJ podcast. Tipped off by rapper Ghostpoet, Gilles Peterson quickly snapped up Gang Colours for his Brownswood label on the strength of just a few tracks of Ozanne’s textured, hazy electronica. The influence of garage on a young Ozanne is also present in his music, but this is refined into a warm, melodic sound, full of experimentation. Gang Colours’ mix is a fine insight into the psychedelic undertones that characterise his own productions, with the intro – random field noise dictaphone recordings made by Ozanne in Amsterdam – signalling a gently abstract theme. But it’s also a very inviting and listenable selection, featuring Hot Chip, talented new producer Lapalux, hot topic haze hop from Clams Casino and a lush electronic shoegaze number from Scottish songwriter The Pictish Trail. Soothing, satisfying and intelligent sounds from a fine new producer. Gang Colours’ ‘In Your Gut Like a Knife’ EP is out now, on Brownswood Recordings. Gang Colours DJ Mix Tracklisting 1. Intro 2. Kevin McPhee – It’s What She Wants 3. Misery Peat - Hyde 4. Hot Chip - Just like Mr (Breakdown) 5. Virgin Four - Sex 6. Thieves in the Night - Miss You 7. The Pictish Trail - Winter Home Disco 8. Episode 117 - Jon Convex

    Episode 117 - Jon Convex
Damon Kirkham, one half of Instra:mental, lays down a meaty, metallic groove-beast of a mix for the Clash DJ podcast, under his new solo alias, Jon Convex. The dark, experimental nature of Instra:mental’s sound is carried on through the Convex project, with an even larger array of sounds added into the equation, as demonstrated in his recent ‘Convexations’ EP, which delves into fragmented garage, futuristic acid house and dark club moods, to name but a few. Slithers of all three EP tracks feature in Kirkham’s Clash mix, alongside a glitchy tech number from Dutch dub progressive Martyn (taken from his new album on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint) to open things up, several cuts from the continually-impressive and genre-defying Addison Groove, a clubby number from Joy O, an Instra:mental track and plenty of twisted techno, trip house and UK urban splices and bastardisations, all wisely woven together by Kirkham. The ‘Convexations’ EP is out now, on Martyn’s 3024 label. Jon Convex DJ Mix Tracklisting 1. Martyn - Viper (London Arches Mix) [Brainfeeder] 2. Mesak – Echo’s Bones [Klakson] 3. Episode 116 - Posthuman

    Episode 116 - Posthuman
The mighty Posthuman pummel this week’s Clash DJ mix into submission with a ripsnorting electronica trip, after a decade of fixing up some of the finest crunchy techno and acid-washed electronica, along the way hosting some of the best underground parties that London has ever seen. Beginning with a wonky sample-strewn number from Luke’s Anger, the mix quickly ventures into heady bass gear via Appleblim and Peverelist, and goes on to expose delights from both the old-school of electronica (including some storming acid techno) and the new crop of UK talent. In the veterans’ corner are Future Sound of London, Global Goon, Debasser and Brothomstates, while the new blood is represented by Blawan, Bok Bok and a new Nightwave (formerly 8-Bitch) track, which is given a fractured rework by UTTU. Cousins Rich Bevan and Joshu Doherty formed Posthuman in 1999, and soon afterwards founded Seed Records as an outlet for their uniquely dark techno. They also possess a penchant for hosting excellent parties in bizarre locations, including a prison, a windmill, an iron mine and the legendary Aldwych tube station parties. For a taste of what Posthuman’s eventful musical career has spawned, have a good old listen to their belter of a mix. Posthuman DJ Mix Tracklisting 1. Luke’s Anger - Warble Tone 2. Episode 115 - Dave i.d.
If you’re feeling unenthused by the current crop of painfully twee ‘summer-sounds’, then step this way and revel in the superbly un-summery dark delights provided by Dave i.d. A new producer on the scene, i.d. mixes moody, post-industrial ambience with twisted synth-driven electronica, resulting in a sinister-yet-weirdly-danceable digital answer to post-punk – the atmosphere of which is nailed absolutely in his Clash mix. The opener, ‘Black Antlers (Where’s Your Child?) – a gloomed-up cover of acid house act Bam Bam, by seminal industrial experimentalists Coil – is a twisted stunner, writhing between a noise track and a dancefloor cut. Retro synth fetishist Com Truise then makes a welcome appearance, followed by some classic New Order. Also included are the mighty Killing Joke with their punky new wave anthem ‘Love Like Blood’ which fades into a droney number from the irreplaceable beast that is Throbbing Gristle, climaxing the downbeat goodness perfectly. Dave i.d.’s debut album, ‘Response’, is out now on !K7 Dave i.d. DJ Mix Tracklisting 1. Coil - Black Antlers (Where’s Your Child?) 2. Front 242 - Headhunter 3. Com Truise - Basf Ace 4. Episode 114 - Deadbeat

    Episode 114 - Deadbeat
A mix from an artist who leads their field is always appreciated here at Clash, so when masterful dub-techno veteran Deadbeat – Scott Monteith – offered to flex his mixing muscles for us, we hastily accepted. The result is a punchy, beat-led track selection, showcasing Monteith’s energetic side. Deadbeat is, in the broadest sense, an electronic dub artist, but his musical palette goes far wider, fusing his productions with deep, tech-laden ragga and crackly, sparse ambience. After producing for over 15 years, Monteith has indeed mastered his craft. An ambient rework of a Pantha du Prince track opens up the mix, which melts into crisp, minimal dub from Sven Weisemann and works its way into heavier form, through Matias Aguayo’s much-used tech-house stomper ‘Dance Machine’, ex-Headhunter Addison Groove’s manic ‘Make Um Bounce’ and Dutch progressive-dub prodigy 2562, with a cut from his latest warped disco album. The mix finishes with some typically refined but heavy dub atmospherics, via ‘Fourth Quarter (Cala’s House)’, one of Monteith’s own tracks taken from his new album, ‘Drawn and Quartered’, which is out now on BLKRTZ. Deadbeat DJ Mix Tracklisting 1. Pantha du Prince - Welt am Draht (Mortiz Von Oswald version) [Rough Trade] 2. Sven Weissman - Caprice [Mojuba] 3. The Mole - For the Lost [Internajonal] 4. Episode 113 - Echologist

    Episode 113 - Echologist
Techno veteran Brendon Moeller steps up to offer this week’s DJ mix, via his Echologist alias. Known for his proficiency in producing both refined techno and dubbed-out texture tracks, Moeller’s Clash mix sees the artist starting off by exploring a dancier track selection than expected, initially characterised by crisp techno, but one which soon delves into the spacious areas (courtesy of Frank Bretschneider’s minimal click journey, ‘Flight 09’) often favoured by Moeller himself in his dubbier moods. Things then take a darker turn, via Norman Nodge’s aptly named ‘Breakdown’, before the trippy bleeped nightmare of Oni Ayhun’s ‘OAR 004 A’. Scary but satisfying. A clever, mood-shifting mix, and as you’d expect from Moeller, with over 15 years production experience under his belt, everything here has been carefully scrutinised and masterfully mixed. ‘Subterranean’, Moeller’s latest album, is out now on Steadfast Records. Echologist DJ Mix Tracklisting 1. Komet - Flight 2. Bendix - The Tomorrow People 3. Mike Dehnert - Treillis 4. Anton Zap - Road Trip Song 5. Kassem Mosse - Demo Drums Ripping 6. Episode 112 - Black Devil Disco Club

Episode 112 - Black Devil Disco Club
There are few artists who can nail a sound so contemporary and individual after well over three decades in the game. Black Devil Disco Club, who supplies this week’s DJ podcast, is one of those artists. In 1978, Bernard Fevre, aka Black Devil, produced his first album, ‘Disco Club’ – hugely ahead of its time, the record would come to be revered by the likes of Aphex Twin and Luke Vibert, who revelled in its dark, electronic groove, which Fevre has continued to develop over the course of his considerable career. Eccentric, hugely French and infinitely listenable, his Clash mix takes a typically grand approach, encompassing early French dance (in the purest sense) and a retro cinematic theme, via the likes of fellow countrymen Zombie Zombie (who cover John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’), Giorgio Moroder’s ‘Midnight Express’ theme and David Shire’s unmistakable ‘Night on Disco Mountain’, from none other than ‘Saturday Night Fever’. Speaking of disco, there’s also more than a fair nod to the genre included on the Black Devil mix (though in a typically wayward fashion), despite Fevre distancing himself from the disco scene that he helped contemporise. Disco king or eccentric electronic innovator, the fact remains that Fevre is a bit of a genius, which is more than enough reason to check his Clash mix. Black Devil Disco Club’s latest album, ‘Circus’, is out now on Lo Recordings. Black Devil Disco Club DJ Mix Tracklisting 1. Earth Message - Bernard Fevre 2. Sideral Rhytmic - Jack Arel 3. Episode 111 - Robag Wruhme
German tech-house stalwart Robag Wruhme steps up to the Clash DJ pod platform, and in the spirit of mixing things up and defying expectations, the respected producer has chosen to delve into his early musical upbringing. Fittingly for an artist who thrives on experimentation within his music, the journey is a delightfully quirky one, featuring shards of a Star Wars cover theme, some classic new wave synth biz from Depeche Mode, b2b classic hip hop from Melle Mel and Public Enemy, and tracks from Sonic Youth and Velvet Undergrounder Nico. Robag Wruhme’s latest album, ‘Thora Vukk’, is out now on Pampa. Robag Wruhme DJ Mix Tracklisting 01. Intro - Kohlschmidt / Hinze 02. Dt64 Jingle 03. Tomita - Star Wars 04. Episode 110 - The 2 Bears
The name says it all. This week, Joe Goddard (Hot Chip member and solo producer) and Raf Rundell (DJ, club promoter and part of the renowned Greco-Roman soundsystem) – known collectively as The 2 Bears – take us on an irresistible ‘Balearic Bashment’ journey, along the way exploring the mass of influences that have helped shape the duo’s bounced-up club- house sound. Beginning with some timeless psychedelic pop from The Beach Boys, the Bears’ move through Cali Swag District’s slick, minimal hip hop groove, followed by a Theo Parrish remix of About Group (a project of fellow Hot Chipper Alexis Taylor) and a cluster of Toddla T remixes, including a particularly nice effort from young producer Dillon Francis, who veers Toddla’s ‘Take It Back’ between choppy vocal stylings and grimy dancehall-inspired electro. The 2 Bears’ ‘Bear Hug’ EP is released on 20 June on Southern Fried Records, with the duo’s debut album set for release in autumn. The 2 Bears DJ Mix Tracklisting 1. Episode 109 - Milyoo

    Episode 109 - Milyoo
Psychedelic bassline-house from deepest Kentucky. A phrase you thought you may never hear, but one which aptly sums up this week’s podcast artist, Milyoo. After his debut dropped last year, young Milyoo – Tommy Wilson – has been gathering attention from all the right places for his distinctive stylings, which mix punchy house frameworks with all kinds of deep, dreamy goodness. For his Clash mix, Milyoo delves into the darker corners of house, beginning innocently enough with the nostalgic, pumped-up ‘Tranced Awakening’, but drifting quickly into the likes of Addison Groove’s deliciously twisted ‘Footcrab VIP’, (which adds even more layers to the early Chicago/footwork/UKG mash-up of the original), the sleazy tech-house air of Aaron Carl’s ‘Crucifed’ (xdb edit) and some truly tripped-out splice-house from Milyoo himself. Also listen out for Mount Kimbie, classic disco from Metro Area and a clubby blast of Radiohead’s ‘Everything in its Right Place’, which will no doubt delight fans of the original. Here are some non-partisan, fully objective words from Milyoo on his admittedly impressive work: “This mix is pretty sweet – i.e. ‘the best I’ve ever done’. It spans temporally from 1995 to a 2011 promo. The format varies from 10” white label to a freshly rendered .wav and the genre ranges from... well, it doesn’t. It’s all house… I give it 9/10, and I’m totally not biased.” There you have it. Thing is – he’s kind of right. Milyoo DJ Mix Tracklisting 1. Greg Allman - On Heavy Metal 2. Kerri Chandler - Tranced Awakening (Paper Mache’s Boxed mix) [Subwoofer] 3. Rick Wilhite - City Bar Dancing (Basement mix) [Still Music] 4. STL - Vintage Hunter [Something] 5.
