    About this Episode

    #Charlottesville

In episode no. 14, Jeff and Laura take a minute to pause and discuss what’s been happening in this week’s recent events in Charlottesville, VA after a violent rally/protest over the taking down of the confederate statue of General Robert E. Lee. We are still forming our thoughts, but we do think it is a critical time to open up the dialogue about social justice/racial issues embedded within this protest, the messaging and response to the event, and what’s been happening since #Charlottesville in the United States of America.

We are not finished processing, but we’ve been reading and listening to a lot of different voices -- so we thought we’d share a few recommended resources for you read, listen to, and more to help you engage and continue the conversation with those around you.

#CovidCampus: Doing the Best We Can To “Go Remote” in Higher Ed

This @BreakDrink we bring you a special podcast in light of the evolving situation and events due to the Coronavirus. On this episode, we have a digital round table on transition to remote teaching, learning, students support, and work in higher education with podcast hosts @Profpatrice, @ Katie__Linder, @jeffjacksonTX, @bonni208, & @laurapasquini. We decided to come together for a purpose to reflect and share about the state of things we are doing, thinking about, and planning for as college and university institutions shutdown across the US. We talk about a range of plans, support, and strategies to be implemented and how we are “doing the best we can” as COVID-19 impacts our campus communities.

Advice to take care of yourself, family & work team:

    • Take a walk or go for a run
    • Get outside for fresh air
    • Keep a full-nights’ sleep & rest
    • Meditation: Apps to try?  Calm, 10% Happier (free), & Headspace
    • Eating healthy
    • Get silly & social with those at home
    • Clean your house
    • Ask who needs help – childcare, tech support, etc.
    • Read books
    • Relax from your typical routines
    • Keep to your fitness routine
    • Enjoy the quiet/down time now
    • Just breathe
    • Show gratitude

How do you ensure your remote plan to go digital is accessible and does not exclude anyone? This might be remote teaching, learning, student support, or work for your staff/faculty. How are you preparing for these potential barriers and needs to accommodate your campus stakeholders?

Episode #36: Getting Outside: Figuratively & Literally -- Careers Beyond Higher Ed

On @BreakDrink episode no. 36, Jeff grills Laura about her new job and what it means to not be working in higher ed any more -- or the differences between interviewing and finding jobs outside the ivory tower. In other updates, Laura is American (officially), Jeff’s smart speakers don’t recognize his voice, Laura lives in WA state, Jeff’s been visiting all the TX state parks to fish, and we still love podcasts (of course) ... and recommend a few. We chat a bit about the differences between job search and acclimation from higher ed to industry, and then some. Take a listen as we meander about our own life, career goals, and dream places we’d like to live in the future. How’s 2020 going for y’all? What transitions or life changes are going through in the past few months? How’s it going?

    Coming Around To Country

Before we started talking about online mistakes (episode no. 34), Jeff and Laura went off on a Country Music tangent, due to Ken Burns upcoming documentary series - Country Music - that is coming on on Sunday, September, 2019. We share our thoughts on this type of music and what we hope to learn more about in this documentary. Go watch it and let us know what you think.

    Episode #34: Make No Mistake

    Episode #34: Make No Mistake

On @BreakDrink episode no. 34, Jeff and Laura talk about what it means for our students to make mistakes in the digital age. We talk about the recent episode of Hidden Brain’s case from the “You Can’t Hit Unsend” example and also talk about how we work with and support individuals who do mess up by posting something or stating something you regret online. It is not that easy just to pick up the Pink Pearl to erase it away. Your digital traces stay forever... or a screenshot can be taken and shared.

We end up talking about how to build resilience in learners early on, and even how the  encourage persistence, character development, ethics, etc.  in children now for being a future positive citizen who comes to our higher ed campuses and workplaces. Are we preparing our learners (our own kids or others) to think critically, question their behaviors, and think about their social/emotional selves even before they hit the screen or live online? Then we digress and discuss how we talk to our fur children as well. #woof #gooddog
